    Seventh Son tops China box office

    Seventh Son took the top spot at the China box office with a huge opening. Representing 31% of all screenings, the fantasy epic earned RMB99.4 million (US$16.0 million) from approximately 2.69 million admissions over three days.

    20, Once Again! 重返20歲, the Chinese remake of South Korean fantasy comedy Miss Granny 수상한 그녀, dropped to second place during its second weekend with RMB58.1 million (US$9.34 million) from approximately 1.81 million admissions. After 11 days, the film has earned RMB245 million (US$39.4 million).

    According to co-producer CJ E&M Corp 씨제이이앤엠 주식회사, the Leste CHEN 陳正道 film is now the highest grossing South Korean co-production in China, surpassing the RMB192 million (US$31.0 million) gross of A Wedding Invitation 分手合約 (2013), also co-produced by CJ.

    Night at the Museum 3 dropped to third place, earning RMB35.5 million (US$5.71 million) between Friday and Sunday. The fantasy comedy has made RMB263 million (US$42.4 million) after 15 days.

    Clara LAW 羅卓瑤's The Unbearable Lightness of Inspector Fan 暴走神探 opened in fifth place, earning RMB14.1 million (US$2.27 million) from approximately 454,000 admissions over three days. The Le Vision Pictures Co Ltd 樂視影業(北京)有限公司 release represented approximately 13.8% of screenings over the weekend.

    The 3-D re-release of Stephen CHOW 周星馳's Kung Fu Hustle 功夫 (2004) opened in sixth place making RMB11.4 million (US$1.83 million) from approximately 299,000 admissions. The comedy, which accounted for approximately 11.2% of screenings, has made RMB17.6 million (US$2.84 million) after four days in cinemas.

    Unlike the recent re-release of WONG Kar-wai 王家衛's The Grandmaster 一代宗師 (2013), the 3-D version of Hustle does not contain any new footage.

    Spy thriller The Lotus Code 諜・蓮花 opened in eighth place, earning RMB10.5 million (US$1.69 million) from approximately 295,000 admissions. The Qing Yang film represented approximately 3.23% of all screenings.

    TSUI Hark 徐克's The Taking of Tiger Mountain 3D 智取威虎山 has earned RMB841 million (US$135 million) after 27 days.

    This weekend, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens in China cinemas.


    In Taiwan, American Sniper opened on top, earning NT$13.9 million (US$440,000) from 20 Taipei locations over four days.

    Taken 3 dropped to second place, earning NT$11.0 million (US$348,000) in Taipei. After two weekends, the action sequel has made NT$45.9 million (US$1.46 million) in the capital.

    Opening in 17 locations in Taipei, Alejandro González IÑÁRRITU's Birdman opened in fourth place, making NT$4.14 million (US$131,000) over three days. Distributed by Twentieth Century Fox (Taiwan) Inc 美商二十世紀福斯影片公司, the Academy Award nominated comedy was released in 43 locations nationwide.

    Despite the presence of pop star WANG Lee-hom 王力宏 and TANG Wei 湯唯 in pivotal roles, Michael MANN's Blackhat earned only NT$3.62 million (US$115,000) from 20 Taipei locations over three days. The cyberthriller was released in 74 locations nationwide.

    Time is Money 十萬夥急 – the directorial debut of comedian Kang Kang 康康 – opened in sixth place. From ten locations in Taipei, the comedy earned NT$2.73 million (US$86,600) over three days.

    Opening in eight Taipei locations, The Last: Naruto the Movie earned NT$1.27 million (US$40,300) over three days.

    Opening in just one cinema in Taipei, omnibus films Taipei Factory 台北工廠 (2013) and Taipei Factory II 台北工廠Ⅱ earned a total of NT$39,700 (US$1,260) over three days.

    Angelina JOLIE's Unbroken, 20, Once Again and caper Mortdecai open this weekend.


    In Hong Kong, musical Into the Woods topped the box office. From 43 locations, the Rob MARSHALL film earned HK$4.90 million (US$632,000) over four days.

    Three years ago, musical Les Misérables (2012) opened with HK$11.8 million (US$1.52 million) over its first six days in cinemas. It earned a total of HK$40.9 million (US$5.28 million) during its theatrical run.

    PANG Ho-cheung 彭浩翔's Women Who Flirt 撒嬌女人最好命 remained in second place, earning HK$2.04 million (US$263,550) between Thursday and Sunday. After three weekends, the romantic comedy has made HK$10.2 million (US$1.31 million).

    Local comedy S for Sex S, for Secret 小姐誘心 – produced by Patrick KONG 葉念琛 – opened in third place, earning HK$2.03 million (US$262,260) from 32 locations. Including early previews, the Sundream Motion Pictures Ltd 驕陽電影有限公司 release has made HK$2.33 million (US$301,000),

    Propelled by its Golden Globes win and Academy Award nominations, Boyhood earned HK$558,000 (US$72,000) from nine locations between Thursday and Sunday, representing a week-on-week increase of approximately 21.4%. After two weekends, the Richard LINKLATER film has earned HK$1.23 million (US$158,000).

    From just four screens, Olivier ASSAYAS' Clouds of Sils Maria made HK$111,000 (US$14,400) over four days. From five locations, KITAMURA Ryuhei 北村龍平's Lupin the Third ルパン三世 made just HK$42,600 (US$5,500) over four days.

    This weekend, Blackhat, Birdman, American Sniper and Parasyte: Part 1 寄生獣 PART1 open in cinemas.
