    World Taijiquan Championships

1st World Taijiquan Championships, Chengdu, PRC

This took place at the beginning of this month. It's not what you think. It's a completely different PRC competition circuit with a new rule system that is different that Taijiquan and Taijijian competition in Modern Wushu. There was a cursory discussion of this in our last cover story, The Form and Will of Internal Power (NOV+DEC 2014) and there will be more in the new issue, which drops next week.

This is all the web news I've found so far in English:

Kyrgyzstanis make success at World Championships in Taijiquan
17/11/14 07:27, Bishkek – 24.kg news agency, by Ivan MARCHENKO

Kyrgyz successfully performed at the I World Championships in Taijiquan. This was reported by Traditional Wushu Federation of the Kyrgyz Republic.

As noted, the competition took place recently in Chengdu (China). Taijiquan - one of the most popular styles of wushu arts in the world. This year, the International Wushu Federation filed an application to the International Olympic Committee for inclusion Taijiquan into the Olympic sports. In connection with this WCH of this style was organized for the first time. It was attended by about 300 followers of this kind of sport and traditional Wushu from 30 countries.

It is reported that the Kyrgyz demonstrated technique without arms and with Jian sword in different kinds of programs. According to leading Chinese experts, Eugene Lopatkin performed in accordance with deep traditions peculiar to Taijiquan, showing energy and inner content of a true martial art. Lyubov Seryakova won silver certificate championship. Oleg Kosenko, Nikolay Kononenko, Elena Pavlenko, Aisuluu Asankulova took bronze certificates.

THUNDER BAY — The International Wushu Federation has awarded the 2024 World Taijiquan (Tai Chi) Championships to the City of Thunder Bay.

The biennial international event features the highest competitive level within the Tai Chi discipline.

Local organizers say Wushu is the formal term for the Chinese martial art recognized by the International Olympics Committee.

It's on the short list for potential sports to be included in a future Olympic Games.

Wushu consists of various events, of which Tai Chi is the most widely practised.

City officials, in an announcement Wednesday, said they expect more than 500 participants from around the world for the 2024 event.

In preparation for it, Thunder Bay will also host next year's International Wushu Festival and National Championships, an event that will bring 300 competitors and staff to the venue at Lakehead University.

Officials estimate the economic impact from the 2020 event alone will total $500,000

The bid committee included representatives of the Thunder Bay Chinese Canadian Association, the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission, Tourism Thunder Bay, Peng You Taiji Quan Association, Wushu Ontario and Wushu Canada.

Organizers said the city is already known in China as the "Taiji City" of Canada.
