I'm disappointed that this is the first thread devoted to the Sanda World Cup on our forum.

    Alas, we gotta start somewhere...

Iranian wushu practitioners have clinched seven medals to finish as the runner-ups at the 7th edition of the Sanda World Cup in Indonesia.

On Friday, Iranian sportsman, Hamidreza Ladour, exhibited impressive performance in the last contest of men’s minus 80-kilogram category of the Sanda (sparring) discipline and defeated a representative from Tunisia, collecting the gold medal.

Hamidreza Qolipour overpowered his Algerian rival in the men’s minus 85-kilogram class of the Sanda section, and was awarded the gold medal.

In the women’s minus 52-kilogram category, Soheila Mansourian beat her South Korean opponent and won the gold medal.

Iran’s female wushu artist Maryam Hashemi lost to an athlete from the host nation, Indonesia, in the women’s minus 65-kilogram category, and scooped up the silver medal.

Shahrbanou Mansourian beat her Vietnamese opponent in the final match of women’s minus 75-kilogram category of the Sanda section and won the fourth gold medal for Iran.

Ja’far Shirzad also demonstrated a brilliant performance on Friday and overcame his Swedish opponent in the final contest of men’s minus 65-kilogram Sanda discipline.

Mostafa Khalatbari picked up the sixth gold for Iran after he beat a representative from Egypt in the over 90-kilogram weight category.

Sanda, sometimes called Sanshou or Lei tai, has all the combat aspects of wushu, but includes many more grappling techniques.

The 7th edition of the Sanda World Cup opened in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on November 20, and concluded on November 21. A total of 57 athletes from 18 countries took part in the tournament.

Chinese wushu practitioners were crowned champions at the end of the sporting event, while Filipino athletes finished in the third place behind Iran.

Two Wushu players from the state have again brought laurels to the country by winning two bronze medals at the ongoing 9th Sanda World Cup at Hangzhou in China for the second consecutive year.

In the hard-fought semi-final bouts, Surya Bhanu Pratap lost to Russian world champion Ali Magomedov, while Rajinder was defeated by his Iranian counterpart Miles Azeri Magham and had to settle for bronze. The Indian team has bagged three bronze medals and one silver medal in the international sporting event which features more than 45 countries.
In the 2017 Wushu World Cup, which was held at Kazan in Russia, Surya Bhanu Pratap and Rajinder Singh had clinched a bronze medal each.

“It is indeed a great achievement for the J&K players. Despite not having the best facilities, they have managed to bring laurels to the nation and the state. Of the three bronze medals won by the national team, two bronze medals have been won by our players which is a proof of their consistent performance,” said Kuldeep Handoo, wushu national coach.

ARNEL Mandal beat world champion Vu Minh Duc of Vietnam in the Wushu Sanda World Cup held recently in Hangzhou, China.

The 22-year-old Mandal ruled the -52 kg category in beating Vu, who won the world championship tilt last year at the expense of the Filipino fighter from Iloilo City.

Francisco Solis, meanwhile, took the silver medal after a loss to Li Kang of China in the finals of the -56 kilogram category.

Divine Wally captured the bronze medal in the women’s -48 kilogram category after a loss to Dai Shimeng of China in the semifinals in the Philippine campaign supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.

Wushu Federation Philippines president Tan She Ling commended Mandal, Solis and Wally for their feats and expressed confidence that the trio will win gold medals in next year’s Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines.

For all of its bluster, it's really staggering how little coverage Wushu gets in English news.

Mandal retains crown in Sanda Wushu Worlds
    By BusinessMirror - November 1, 2018

In Photo: Iloilo City pride Arnel Mandal topples a big fish.

Iloilo City pride Arnel Mandal nipped reigning world champion Vu Minh Duc of Vietnam to defend his title in the 52-kg class of the biennial Wushu Sanda World Cup held recently in Hangzhou, China.

Vu was the 22-year-old Mandal’s tormentor in last year’s World Wushu Championships finals.

Reigning 48-kg women’s champion Divine Wally, 24, from La Trinidad in Benguet, had to settle for the bronze medal this time as she bowed to world champion Dai Shimeng of China.

Wally, gold medalist in the 2016 Asian Wushu Championships, bowed to Dai in the semifinals of the 2017 World Wushu Championships.

Iloilo City’s Francisco Solis, the third bet in the lean Philippine team bankrolled by the Philippine Sports Commission, bowed to Li Kang of China in the 56-kg finals to settle for the silver medal.

Solis, 28, was a 56-kg bronze medalist in the 2017 and 2015 World Wushu Championships and 60-kg bronze medalist in the 2016 World Cup, while Li pocketed the gold medals in the 2016 World Cup and 2017 World Championships.

The Sanda World Cup is the apex of wushu, with only the medalists in the most recent world championships qualified to see action.

Wushu Federation Philippines President Tan She Ling commended Mandal, Solis and Wally for their feats and expressed confidence that the trio will win gold medals in next year’s Southeast Asian Games the country is hosting.
