Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows

I suppose the proper thing to do would be to divvy up our original TMNT thread into individual topics as it started with the 2007 version and is now about the 2014 version (note we're running a sweepstakes for the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack now). But I'm not going to bother. That thread is like 10 pages now. Moving on...

TMNT is green lit. And yes, that's a triple entendre pun here, fully intended for maximum PUN-ishment. FTW!!

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2′ Finds Director

“Earth to Echo” director David Green is in talks to direct “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2,” sources confirm.

Jonathan Liebesman directed this summer’s “Turtles” pic, which grossed $478 million worldwide, but Paramount wanted to take a new approach and decided to open the director search. Liebsman would have been unable to direct on such short notice anyway, as he is currently directing the 10-part event series “Shannara.”

Michael Bay is producing along with his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are penning the script.

Unknown at this point are plot details and who will return from the original pic, though Megan Fox and Will Arnett are expected to reprise their roles.

The Turtles franchise is one of Paramount’s top properties following its success this summer — so much so that Paramount dated the sequel for 2016 before even locking down a director or cast.

The job is a huge win for the Green who, prior to “Earth to Echo,” was known more for his short films including “Dial M for Murder” and “New Romance.” Paramount is typically careful about budgets and likes to work with directors who can make the most out of what they have to work with, as Green did on “Echo,” which cost only $13 million to make.

    Paramount had no comment.

Green is repped by WME, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and attorney Matthew Wallerstein .
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Will Probably Feature These 3 Characters
BY ERIC EISENBERG 4 DAYS AGO

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature that was released this past summer reintroduced a whole bunch of classic characters from the comics and TV shows - including the likes of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo as well as April O'Neil, Shredder and Splinter. The coming sequel, however, will allow the new live-action series to provide screentime for even more in-universe characters - and apparently there are big plans to do exactly that.

With Earth To Echo director David Green now attached to helm Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and the project moving forward, Platinum Dunes producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been discussing where the franchise is heading and what new characters the movie will introduce. Speaking with the Brazilian outlet Omelette, the two filmmakers revealed that fans will get to see brand new versions of both Bebop and Rocksteady in the new film, and that discussions are now in the works about including Casey Jones in the mix. Said Form,

"We can say that Bebop and Rocksteady are in the film, and Casey Jones is a character that we love and we’re trying to fit him in as well"
This is actually further development of a story that sprung up all the way back in July - a few weeks before the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. At that time, Fuller mentioned that there were daily discussions about including Bebop, Rocksteady and Casey Jones. The first film wound up being a box office success, leading to a sequel being announced, and that's what brings us to today and this confirmation.

For those unfamiliar with the characters, Bebop and Rocksteady were originally introduced as members of the Foot Clan (the organization run by Shredder). After a humiliating defeat, at the hands of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Shredder mutates them with warthog and rhinoceros DNA. Rather than being a part of the original comics, Bebop and Rocksteady were first introduced on the 1987 animated series. The characters were going to appear in the 1991 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze, but due to rights issues they were replaced by two other mutant creatures, Tokka and Rahzar.

Unlike Bebop and Rocksteady, Casey Jones has already had his live-action debut, having been played by Elias Koteas all the way back in 1990 in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. The character is a hockey mask-wearing vigilante who has a knack for knocking the hell from criminals with various pieces of sporting equipment (though he's naturally best known for his work with hockey sticks). There is also a good chance that he will wind up having some kind of romantic relationship with April O'Neil, who was played by Megan Fox in the most recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles iteration.

The folks at Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes aren't wasting any time with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and will be releasing it on June 3, 2016 - with plans to start production in 2015. Who do you think they should get to play Bebop, Rocksteady and Casey Jones?

And just to get this new TMNT thread rolling...

    Here's a really heart-tugging TMNT tale.

Is this Britain's bravest boy? Harley Renshaw, five, is a real superhero as he battles against cancer
    Dec 02, 2014 19:30 By Dean Kirby
Five-year-old says his special Ninja Turtle mask and 'beads of courage' make him feel stronger as he is treated for rare form of disease in kidney, neck, lung and bones

A five-year-old boy from Stretford has created a superhero mask to help him face up to a gruelling three months of treatment as he battles a rare form of cancer.

Harley Renshaw is fighting cancer in his kidney, neck, lung and bones - but his Ninja Turtle mask makes him feel stronger while having his treatment.

Hospital staff were amazed when the youngster, from Stretford, asked if he could decorate the protective medical mask that holds him still while having the treatment.

Harley has now been awarded one of Cancer Research UK’s Little Star Awards which acknowledges the unique challenges faced by youngsters who encounter cancer.

His mum Stacey, 23, said: “We couldn’t be prouder of our boy. He has had such a lot to deal with, but he just takes it all in his stride and gets on with it. He is a true inspiration and he is our superhero.”

Stacey and dad Oliver, 25, were given Harley’s devastating diagnosis after taking him to see a doctor with a pain in his tummy.

He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma - a rare and aggressive childhood cancer - and is now taking part in a Cancer Research UK funded clinical trial at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Harley has had 80 days of intensive chemotherapy and an operation to remove his kidney tumour.

A month later, he was back at hospital for a stem cell transplant - but fought back from complications to return home for his fifth birthday.

Harley has also had 14 days of radiotherapy at The Christie and is now having five months of further treatment.

The brave youngster has even made some special ‘beads of courage’ to help him feel brave in hospital. He has a big scar across his belly that he calls his ‘pirate scar’.

Stacey said: “When we received Harley’s diagnosis, we were in complete shock. Our world came crashing down and we were terrified.

“But not once did Harley complain about going for treatment.

“The hospital staff were amazed at how well he behaved during his radiotherapy and how he managed to keep so still.”

Cancer Research UK is calling on people to nominate more Little Stars.

The awards, in partnership with TK Maxx, are open to under-18s who have cancer or who have been treated for the disease in the last five years.

To nominate a Little Star, go to cruk.org/littlestar

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2″ has cast Brian Tee (“The Wolverine”) as iconic villain Shredder, Variety has learned exclusively.

He’ll join Megan Fox (April O’Neil), Will Arnett (Vern Fenwick), Stephen Amell (Casey Jones) and Tyler Perry (Baxter Stockman) in the Paramount sequel. Michael Bay will once again produce with his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. David Green is set to direct from a script by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec.

The 2014 reboot of the beloved franchise brought in more than $485 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million. Tohoru Masamune played the villain in the 2014 movie.

Tee recently finished filming NBC drama pilot “Love Is a 4 Letter Word” from director George Tillman Jr. and writer-producer Diana Son. He’ll next be seen in Universal’s “Jurassic World,” playing the role of Takashi Hamada. No stranger to popular franchises, Tee’s credits also include “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and “Mortal Kombat: Legacy.”

Tee is repped by Abrams Artists Agency, manager Lisa DiSante-Frank, Sabrina Hutchinson Public Relations and attorney Mark Johnson of Behr, Abramson, Levy.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2″ will hit theaters on June 3, 2016.

    Yes, that Laura Linney.

Laura Linney, the three-time Oscar nominated actress known for her dramatic work, is picking up a pair of nunchucks and joining the cast of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

The Paramount movie, based on the 1980s comic that spawned toy, cartoons and movies, is in production in New York.

Megan Fox and Will Arnett are back for the sequel, which has newcomers such as Arrow star Stephen Amell and Tyler Perry, the latter another brow-raising casting.

Details for Linney’s role are being kept hidden deep in the sewers.

Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing.

Linney has stayed away from big studio franchise movies until TMNT 2 but the actress, now a new mom with a one year old under her belt, is becoming open to projects that are geared for younger audiences.

Her more recent movies have been a mix of period and dramas, ranging from Hyde Park on the Hudson to The Fifth Estate. She is currently on screen opposite Ian McKellan in Mr. Holmes and has the all-star 1920 literary drama Genius, with Colin Firth, Guy Pearce, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman, in the can.

Linney is repped by ICM Partners, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Morris Yorn.

    TMNT home furnishings?

Nickelodeon, NBA Star Carmelo Anthony Team on Ninja Turtles-Inspired Consumer Products

    Wesley Mann

    by Georg Szalai
    6/9/2015 4:00pm PDT

Viacom's Nickelodeon is partnering with NBA star Carmelo Anthony on a line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles inspired consumer products.

The deal was announced Tuesday at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas as the Turtles continue to do well across TV, film and merchandising.

The New York Knicks star and self-professed Turtles super-fan will serve as creative director of Turtles by Melo, a consumer products line inspired by the Nickelodeon franchise. It is expected to span lifestyle products, home furnishings, publishing, video games and more. Turtles by Melo is set to debut in the spring 2016, ahead of the summer theatrical release of Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, in which Anthony has a cameo.

“I am so excited about the opportunity to work with the Nickelodeon team on this new Turtles ‎venture,” said Anthony.

“The Turtles were a big part of my childhood. I have been connecting with the brand for a long time,” Anthony, 31, tells The Hollywood Reporter. Nowadays, “I watch with my son,” who is 8, he adds.

The NBA star said he and Nickelodeon started having conversations and building a relationship a while back, well before striking the merchandising deal. “It just happened really naturally. We didn’t force it,” the star athlete tells THR.

Asked what would come next after the news of the collaboration that will bring the Anthony and the Turtles brands together, he says fans should stay tuned for more details. “It’s just the first step,” he says. “There is more to come.”

While not yet detailing full product ideas, he says the project was exciting to take on not only because he is a fan, but also because it adds another experience beyond his basketball career, charity work and business ventures. “For me it’s about stepping outside the box,” he explains. “It is something I never could have imagined.”

For Viacom’s Nickelodeon the partnership is another way to keep the franchise growing. “A product line created and curated by a superstar — and super-fan — like Carmelo is testament to the Turtles’ ever-growing appeal, and it’s a huge part of the drumbeat beginning for new seasons of the TV show and the theatrical sequel from Paramount Pictures next summer,” said Pam Kaufman, chief marketing officer and president, consumer products, Nickelodeon.

She says: “Turtles is a franchise that continues to be relevant to the people who grew up with it in the ‘80s and also to kids today through our TV series on Nick. Carmelo watches the show with his son, which is right in step with how people watch and share their love for these characters. He really embodies the Turtles’ multi-generational appeal.”

What does a sports star bring to the table for the new product line? “Carmelo is ideal for this new consumer products line because he is genuinely a super-fan, and of course he’s an iconic celebrity with global appeal,” Kaufman said. “He speaks with authenticity and love for the Turtles, and his presence will get the accompanying products into different aisles at retail.”

Concludes the executive: “His association can further elevate awareness of the franchise and turn up the cool factor even more.”

The news of the partnership comes as Nickelodeon has reinvigorated the 30-year-old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, which it acquired in 2009 for about $60 million.

The company first used its TV platform to re-ignite interest in the franchise with a new CG series launched in 2011 with stories and art styles that made it more contemporary and launching consumer products lines before planning a movie. The company has focused on the property’s cross-generational appeal, looking to reach parents and their children.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series has seen four seasons ordered, making it one of Nick’s longest-running series. It has been the top-rated TV show with boys 2-11 and has ranked second only to ESPN with adults 18-49 in its time period.

Paramount's Turtles film last year brought in about $485 million in global office, according to Box Office Mojo, and the sequel has been greenlit for 2016.

In consumer products, the Turtles generated $1.5 billion at retail in 2014‎, of which Nickelodeon gets a percentage, up from $475 million in the first year after the brand's relaunch. To date, the franchise has reached more than $3 billion in global retail sales. Turtles figures were the number one toy in the U.S. in 2014, not just with boys, but all kids, even beating out Frozen and others, according to research firm NPD Group.

Anthony and his now-wife La La Vazquez have been featured in a couple of docu-soap series on Viacom's VH1. He will also be a part of the second annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports awards in L.A. on July 16.

Beyond his basketball career, Anthony has been involved in various philanthropic efforts. Last year, he also created Melo7 Tech Partners to help invest in and develop tech start-ups, such as smart kitchen company The Orange Chef. He has also helped develop Be Everyware, a provider of mobile technology for small businesses. In another business venture, Melo in 2013 partnered with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson to create headphone and accessories brand SMS Audio.

Police are hunting a man who dressed up as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle to steal a BMW motorcycle from a dealership.

The bizarre moment was captured on CCTV, and investigators have released the footage hoping it will help them catch the thief.

The man drove a stolen Mitsubishi van to the dealership in Doncaster, in Melbourne's east, about 1.30am on Monday, September 7.

After breaking in, he stole a 2015 black and red BMW S1000XR motorcycle, with the registration number of 1R6BO, which had been temporarily parked inside an elevator.

As the man was leaving on the motorcycle, he stopped and rammed the back gates with the Mitsubishi van before setting fire to its driver's compartment.

He then rode off on the motorcycle.

Images of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mask, similar to the one worn by the man, and the motorcycle have also been released.

The man is described as being aged in his late teens to early 30s, medium build, and between 170cm and 180cm tall.

Police have released a picture of the mask similar to the one worn by the thief

He was wearing a 'Leonardo' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mask and 'Black and Blue' branded tracksuit pants.

Manningham Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing to public for help to identify the man and locate the stolen motorcycle.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a popular comic book series, which was then made into a television series before spawning a number of movies.

The series tells the story of four teenage anthropomorphic turtles who are named after four Renaissance artists - Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael.

It reached its peak popularity in the late 1980s and the early 1990s.

Most recently, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have featured in two movies reboots - one released in 2014 and its sequel scheduled for 2016.

    And there's more....

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to dominate this Halloween
Costumes based on reptilian superheroes are expected to fly off the shelves this Halloween.

    The Associated Press
The 2014 release of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has made the creatures a firm favourite with fans.

By: Joyce M. Rosenberg The Associated Press, Published on Wed Sep 23 2015

PARAMUS, N.J.—Expect to see a lot of Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo and Raphael this Halloween.

Some of the most popular costumes are expected to be based on the reptilian superheroes after the ,2014 release of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, according to Steven Silverstein, CEO of Spirit Halloween, a chain of more than 1,150 pop-up stores devoted to costumes and decor for the holiday. Children love the Turtles, and so do adults who watched them on TV and in movies when they were kids, he says.

Girls are expected to choose costumes based on the Disney TV movie, The Descendants, the story of the children of Disney characters such as Cruella De Vil and Cinderella.

Adult costumes and accessories based on TV shows like The Walking Dead and Orange Is the New Black are expected to sell well. Costumes based on superheroes like the Avengers or Batman should also be brisk sellers, Silverstein says.

And as usual, corsets and skimpy outfits for women are likely to attract a lot of partygoers. Risqué costumes are big Halloween sellers.

For those with gorier tastes, Halloween fare also includes bloodied zombies and ghouls and characters from slasher movie classics like Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th.
I suspect the top costume this Halloween in America will be Trump.

    Alibaba

Both films have more Japanese influence (Sulu & ninjas) but I can see where they would fare well as Hollywood franchises in China.

Alibaba Pictures invests in Paramount's new 'Star Trek,' 'Ninja Turtles' films

Stephen Amell and Megan Fox star in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and Platinum Dunes. (Jessica Miglio)

After dipping its toe in Hollywood waters by putting money into “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” last year, China's Alibaba Pictures said Monday it is investing in two more Paramount Pictures films: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Star Trek Beyond.”

The companies did not reveal how much Alibaba would invest in the productions.

“Ninja Turtles” is set for a June 3 release stateside, while the new “Star Trek” will arrive on U.S. screens in July. Alibaba indicated both films have received government approval to be imported into China under the country’s quota system and would be released on the mainland in the second half of the year.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” grossed $57 million in China in 2013, about 12% of its worldwide haul of $467 million. The Ninja Turtles cartoons have long been popular in China, and Paramount’s 2014 Ninja Turtle film grossed $63 million in China, also about 12% of its $493-million worldwide earnings.

Justin Lin directs "Star Trek Beyond" featuring Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban. The film will be in theaters July 22, 2016.

Alibaba said the new “Star Trek” and “Ninja Turtles” films would receive distribution support from its Taobao Movie online platform.

Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said in a statement: “We are very glad to be working with Alibaba Pictures again. We look forward to even more successful launches of these films in the global movie market.”

Zhang Wei, president of Alibaba Pictures, said: “We had a great experience working with Paramount on 'Mission: Impossible' and are very excited to join forces again for these two pictures, both of which have terrific fan bases in China that we hope to cooperate with Paramount to grow even larger.”

In addition to the Paramount films, Alibaba Pictures has invested in a Korean film called “REAL” starring Kim Soo Hyun, which is expected to be released next year.

The company is also bankrolling its own productions, several of which are expected to be released in 2016, including “Ferryman,” which counts Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai as a producer and is directed by Zhang Jiajia, author of the short story on which it’s based.

Sorry bro, all nights are booked up!

This high-tech dojo is fully loaded...a glow in the dark basketball court, a retro arcade, more video games with a pretty sweet tv wall...anything for hanging ninja-style.

We know ninjas need sleep too so we have three bedrooms upstairs for you to get your zzzs on. We also hooked you up with free pizza delivery and some swag for you at check-out.

    Guest Access

Our lair is your lair....we'll have our peeps meet you at the front door to hand off the keys and show you around. You'll be stoked!!

    Interaction with Guests

Dude! I told ya we're out. Got evil to fight, battles to win. So we won't be there.

    Other Things to Note

For every guest that stays, we'll donate some dough in their name to PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. Together we can shell shock bullying, cause that's what bros do.

If dates are sold out, follow @TMNTMovie for hints on when we're out of the Lair again so you can crash.

Catch us in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, out in theaters June 3rd.

We say no to drugs and alcohol, so none of that in the Lair. But we do say yes to pizza! Just clean up your pizza crusts and don't break any of Donnie's equipment. That really gets his Bo staff in a twist.

You can have a couple friends drop by to check out the Lair, but Splinter says the upstairs bedrooms are off limits. Don't even think about inviting more overnight guests! We have neighbors too so keep it chill...try not to bring the ruckus!

    Megan in the NYT

My respect for Megan just rose a notch with this interview. She seems to have a good perspective on herself.

We were invited to a screener for this last week but there was so going on that regretfully, we couldn't swing the review.

Megan Fox on ‘Ninja Turtles’ and Female Stereotypes in Film
    Snapshot
By MELENA RYZIK JUNE 2, 2016

Fans of Megan Fox have had to exercise patience: The actress, by her own admission, doesn’t work much. “I’ve never made more than two movies a year,” she said. Her recent arc on the Fox series “New Girl,” was, then, an unexpected treat, and she will reappear next season, she said, as a love interest and sharp-tongued comic foil. And she returns as April, the adventurous reporter and stalwart buddy in the sequel “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” out on Friday, June 3.

A case of bronchitis caused her to miss the premiere in New York, where the movie was filmed, but Ms. Fox spoke afterward by phone from Los Angeles about her unambitious career path and her working relationship with the producer and director Michael Bay, who first propelled her to stardom in “Transformers,” and is behind the “Turtles” movies. As a mother of two young sons, with a third child on the way (with the actor Brian Austin Green), Ms. Fox, 30, long ago gave up playing Halo, but she still gravitates toward the fantasy universe. “If I got sent 10 scripts and one of them was for an action or sci-fi or gaming movie, that’s the first one I’m gonna read,” she said. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Is it important for you to play women who are both strong and physically attractive?

I don’t get a whole lot of say in terms of character development on movies like these. It’s not like I’m in there helping them write the script saying, “April should do this, because this is what a real feminist would do.” In terms of what’s available for women to play in general in Hollywood, it’s pretty scarce. You have these stereotypes that still dominate films: the nag, the trophy, the escort. [Laughs.] I haven’t been sent a nag script yet, but I do get plenty of, like, “interesting stripper.” Or, “She’s super funny, but she’s also an escort, but that’s what makes it funny!”

Would you rather have more say?

[On “Ninja Turtles”] if I had said, I feel like my integrity is being compromised wearing this schoolgirl uniform, they would listen to that, of course. But that wasn’t something that affected me in a negative way at all. On a movie like this, I don’t mind doing [the scene] as written, but I do do a lot of improv. I’m sort of a rapid-fire ballsy talker, and so I bring that to the character whenever it’s appropriate to the scene. That never makes it in.

How did the “New Girl” role come about?

I don’t watch a lot of television, so I didn’t know about it. They wanted to pitch it to me, and I thought that was so bizarre, because I’m not known for working in television, and not known for comedy, even though I’ve done a couple. And I loved it. I was taken aback by how weird and offbeat and fun [the show] is, and the character falls right in line with how I like to play to my own comedic timing.

You’ve said that you’re not very ambitious as an actress. Why not?

I know [that] idea is a very strange thing because usually actresses are all ambition, and are driven to achieve and they’re workaholics, for the most part. And I’ve never been that way. I’m not necessarily very passionate about acting per se. I don’t feel validated by being on a set or making a movie. I have a lot of fun making these movies, but it’s not a representation of my innermost being.

You and Michael Bay had a public falling out after you compared him to Hitler in an interview. You weren’t in the fourth “Transformers.” How did you mend fences?

I had to ride out two years of very negative press. There’s this perception that I was sort of thrown out of Hollywood. The positive thing was that it forced me to be very introspective and go, ‘You were not totally right in this situation.’ I reached out to him, and we had a very genuine exchange. From that point forward, it was good.

What kind of movies would you like to do?

I actually prefer doing these kind of movies, which always surprises people because they always assume that everyone wants to be the suffering artist, making these festival pieces. There’s something that’s more athletic about the process of making these movies, there’s more adrenaline involved, there’s more risk factor, there’s more chaos, and so I just find it to be a more exciting experience. These are also the kind of movies that I prefer to watch, because they’re an escape into a supernatural world, which has always been where I prefer to daydream, anyway.

A version of this interview appears in print on June 5, 2016, on page AR2 of the New York edition with the headline: Picking Her Spots in a Fantasy-Laced Career.
