    Star Trek Beyond (ST3)

Most people think of Fast & Furious with Lin, but I always remember him for Finishing the Game which is why I'll post this here. Maybe there will be some Klingon martial arts or something.

Star Trek 3’s New Director Will Be ‘Fast & Furious 6′ Helmer Justin Lin
    by Mike Fleming Jr

    Star Trek Into Darkness

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot just set Justin Lin to direct Star Trek 3, filling the biggest open directing assignment out there with the filmmaker credited with reviving the Fast & Furious series. Lin helmed four of the films that grossed $1.9 billion in worldwide box office.

He replaces Roberto Orci, who got that job after being involved as co-writer of the revamped Star Trek series. The first two installments were directed by Abrams, who then left to direct a revival of the Star Wars franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I reported that several top-ranked filmmakers were in contention, but I’m told that Lin was the only one offered the job. He is available because he was going to direct the sequel to The Bourne Legacy spinoff with Jeremy Renner, but that film got postponed when Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass agreed to do another installment of The Bourne Identity, which Universal wants to come first. Lin was courted to return to the Fast & Furious franchise to do a multi-part finale, but I am not sure whether that will be in the cards in light of the Star Trek job. Orci remains a producer on the Star Trek film. The first one grossed $380 million worldwide in 2009, and the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, grossed more than $460 million worldwide after opening in May 2013.

Lin is repped by CAA, Cinetic Management and Sloss Eckhouse Law Co.

    Joe Taslim

I knew there was a logical reason for starting this thread.

'Fast & Furious 6' Martial Arts Actor Joins 'Star Trek 3' (Exclusive)

    Joe Taslim AP Images/Invision

Joe Taslim almost made it to the end of 'The Raid' alive and was a bad guy with Luke Evans in 'Fast & Furious 6.'

Indonesian actor and martial artist Joe Taslim has joined the cast of Star Trek Beyond.

The movie, the third installment of the rebooted sci-fi franchise, is currently in production in Vancouver and reunited the main cast including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban and John Cho.

Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella are the new additions.

Details on Taslim’s role are being kept underground but sources say it is a key part opposite Elba, who plays a villain.

Justin Lin is directing the movie that has a July 8, 2016 release date.

Taslim was discovered by director Gareth Evans and co-starred with Iko Uwais in the director's 2011’s cult action movie, The Raid, in which he played a police officer.

Taslim, who is repped by ICM Partners, worked with Lin when he played a bad guy in the director’s Fast & Furious 6.

    Alibaba

Both films have more Japanese influence (Sulu & ninjas) but I can see where they would fare well as Hollywood franchises in China.

Alibaba Pictures invests in Paramount's new 'Star Trek,' 'Ninja Turtles' films

Stephen Amell and Megan Fox star in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and Platinum Dunes. (Jessica Miglio)

After dipping its toe in Hollywood waters by putting money into “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” last year, China's Alibaba Pictures said Monday it is investing in two more Paramount Pictures films: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Star Trek Beyond.”

The companies did not reveal how much Alibaba would invest in the productions.

“Ninja Turtles” is set for a June 3 release stateside, while the new “Star Trek” will arrive on U.S. screens in July. Alibaba indicated both films have received government approval to be imported into China under the country’s quota system and would be released on the mainland in the second half of the year.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” grossed $57 million in China in 2013, about 12% of its worldwide haul of $467 million. The Ninja Turtles cartoons have long been popular in China, and Paramount’s 2014 Ninja Turtle film grossed $63 million in China, also about 12% of its $493-million worldwide earnings.

Justin Lin directs "Star Trek Beyond" featuring Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban. The film will be in theaters July 22, 2016.

Alibaba said the new “Star Trek” and “Ninja Turtles” films would receive distribution support from its Taobao Movie online platform.

Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said in a statement: “We are very glad to be working with Alibaba Pictures again. We look forward to even more successful launches of these films in the global movie market.”

Zhang Wei, president of Alibaba Pictures, said: “We had a great experience working with Paramount on 'Mission: Impossible' and are very excited to join forces again for these two pictures, both of which have terrific fan bases in China that we hope to cooperate with Paramount to grow even larger.”

In addition to the Paramount films, Alibaba Pictures has invested in a Korean film called “REAL” starring Kim Soo Hyun, which is expected to be released next year.

The company is also bankrolling its own productions, several of which are expected to be released in 2016, including “Ferryman,” which counts Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai as a producer and is directed by Zhang Jiajia, author of the short story on which it’s based.

This preview does not give me hope. Action has always played a secondary role in Star Trek, taking a back seat for character, plot, and weird sci-fi mystery... I'm so sick of the special effects action ride taking the place of everything else that makes a movie enjoyable. Hope I'm wrong about this...

    RIP Chekov 2

    Such a shocking tragedy.

Anton Yelchin, 'Star Trek' Actor, Dies at 27
11:15 AM PDT 6/19/2016 by Arlene Washington and Ryan Parker

J.J. Abrams, Jodie Foster and Drake Doremus pay tribute in the wake of the actor's accidental death on Sunday morning.
Anton Yelchin, best known for playing Chekov in the new Star Trek films, has died. He was 27.

The actor was killed in a car accident early Sunday morning, his publicist, Jennifer Allen confirmed.

The accident happened around 1:10 a.m. at Yelchin's home in Studio City, LAPD spokeswoman Jenny Houser told The Hollywood Reporter. "It appears he momentarily exited his car and it rolled backward, causing trauma that led to his death," said Houser.

Yelchin was on his way to meet his friends for rehearsal and when he didn't respond, his friends went to check on him. The actor was found pinned between the car and the fence and a mailbox pillar.

Yelchin stars in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, which is set to open July 22. The film's studio, Paramount Pictures, released a statement on Yelchin's death:

All of us at Paramount join the world in mourning the untimely passing of Anton Yelchin. As a member of the Star Trek family, he was beloved by so many and he will missed by all. We share our deepest condolences with his mother, father and family.

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams posted a tribute to the actor through his Bad Robot Productions Twitter page. He tweeted a photo of a handwritten note which reads, "You were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you. JJ"

Yelchin in May signed on to co-star in DirecTV/the Audience Network's 10-episode straight-to-series Stephen King adaptation Mr. Mercedes. Producer David E. Kelley told THR Yelchin was to portray Brady Hartsfield, a mentally deranged ice cream truck driver and IT worker for Cyber Patrol (aka Geek Squad) who is secretly the Mercedes Killer. The drama is slated to premiere in 2018 on both DirecTV and AT&T Uverse.

"We are devastated to learn of the tragic death of Anton Yelchin," a spokeswoman for DirecTV/Audience Network said in a statement. "We greatly admired his talent and were very much looking forward to working with him on Mr. Mercedes. Everyone at AT&T and AUDIENCE Network extends our deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time."

It remains unclear how Yelchin's passing will impact the series.

Yelchin began acting as a child, both in films and television, including Steven Spielberg's Emmy-award winning TV series Taken, which aired on the Sci-Fi Channel in late 2002. The prolific actor starred in several films released in 2001, including Along Came a Spider, but garnered the most recognition for Hearts in Atlantis.

In 2006, Yelchin received widespread acclaim for Alpha Dog, a crime thriller drawing from the real-life story of kidnap and murder victim Nicholas Markowitz.

Paramount was particularly impressed with the young actor, as the studio and Abrams cast him to play Chekov in their reinvigorated Star Trek series, the first of which hit theaters in 2009. Yelchin reprised the role in Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013 and will be seen posthumously in Star Trek Beyond. (Justin Lin took over directing duties from Abrams on the third film.)

Yelchin also devoted his time to a number of smaller and independent films, including Jodie Foster's The Beaver (2011).

"Anton… What a rare and beautiful soul with his unstoppable passion for life," Foster said in a statement. "He was equal parts serious thinker and the most fun little brother you could ever dream of. I am so honored to have been able to direct such a deep actor, so committed and genuine. I will forever be grateful for all of those little exchanges we shared, his contagious enthusiasm, his questions, his company. My heart breaks for his mom and dad who were a part of every anecdote. He carried their love into everything he touched."

Yelchin starred opposite Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence in the 2011 indie film Like Crazy, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Paramount's specialty division, Paramount Vantage, picked up the movie and gave it a limited release at the box office, where it earned north of $3.4 million.

Drake Doremus, who co-wrote and directed Like Crazy, was reached by THR shortly after the news broke. "I'm still in shock," he said. "I'm having a hard time processing it. I just woke up and saw it online and thought it was a hoax, you know, like some of these things are. Then I talked to some people who confirmed it and it's just devastating."

He continued: "Everyone's devastated. I spoke to Felicity, who is very devastated and very upset. And Jon Schwartz [the film's producer]. You just try to touch base with all the people you love and who changed your life, and he certainly changed all our lives."

Yelchin also starred in Rudderless (2014) for director William H. Macy; Michael Almereyda's Cymbeline (2015), which made its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival; and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Broken Horses (2015). Major studio offerings in recent years outside of Star Trek included DreamWork's Fright Night remake (2011), directed by Craig Gillespie, (2011) and Sony's animated franchise The Smurfs.

    Deadline's international box office report

I only cut&pasted the relevant films mentioned here.

‘Star Trek Beyond’ $30M Debut; ‘Lights Out’ $8.3M; ‘Ice Age’ Franchise Crosses $3B To Best ‘Shrek’; China Loves ‘Skiptrace’ – Int’l Box Office Sunday
    by Anita Busch
    July 24, 2016 1:00pm

    Paramount

PREVIOUSLY 9:15 AM with Write-thru 1:00 PM: In conjunction with its domestic release, Paramount launched Star Trek Beyond in 37 markets, including in the U.K., Germany and Australia — territories where the franchise has traditionally performed extremely well but, surprisingly, lost out to Steven Spielberg’s The BFG in the U.K. Star Trek opened to $30M, 14% below its franchise predecessor. Lights Out, Warner Bros./New Line’s horror film opened to $8.3M after an impressive $21.6M domestic — on a $5M production budget. Skiptrace, Jackie Chan’s action comedy directed by Renny Harlin, opened in China to No. 1 as it kicked Warner Bros.’ The Legend of Tarzan to No. 2. Ice Age: Collision Course made history this weekend as Fox’s franchise pushed over the $3B mark in box office receipts to become the top animated franchise ever, surpassing Shrek.

Jeffrey Katzenberg/DreamWorks’ animated Shrek bowed in 2001 and ran through 2010 theatrically; Fox and Blue Sky’s Ice Age began with its theatrical bow in 2002 and has run until 2016. I guess you could say that Ice Age cracked Shrek‘s nut. Collision Course is still No. 1 in 12 of its markets, having brought in another $30M this weekend. Gotta give kudos to Fox’s international marketing team as they put together a stellar promotional campaign for the film in overseas markets (see below).

Back to Star Trek. Historically, it’s interesting to note that J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek was the first of the series to gross $100M internationally, but, at the end of the day, the domestic take was greater $257.7M. When its sequel Star Trek Into the Darkness was released in 2013 it had the benefit of the first one establishing a newly booted franchise overseas and international offices embraced the film. With Into Darkness, international box office then overtook domestic as the film flew in with a $238.6M overseas take compared to its $228.7M stateside. The third so far is lagging behind Into Darkness both domestically and internationally. Let’s take a look at all the new openers and the holdovers:

    NEW:

    Paramount
    STAR TREK BEYOND

With $59.6M domestically, Paramount Pictures’ latest installment of Star Trek pulled in $30M in its 37 markets — or 45% of its international imprint — and grabbed No. 1 in roughly half of them (16) for a global debut of $89.6M. In comparison, Star Trek Into Darkness bowed in 2013 to $70.1M domestically and $31.7M internationally (for $101.8M). (Beyond made 59.6M in this weekend’s domestic debut).

Internationally, the release pattern was different in terms of markets in release for Into Darkness, however. In the U.K., where the performance of the franchise has been consistently solid, it was edged out this weekend by Steven Spielberg’s family film The BFG (see below).

Paramount said that the heatwave in Europe negatively impacted the weekend’s box office results for the film which was 35% above the first Star Trek, Star Trek Beyond is 14% below Into Darkness and only 2% below Pacific Rim.

Into Darkness ended its international run with $238M. Star Trek Beyond is said to carry a production budget over $185M (not including distribution and marketing costs of over $100M globally) so if it plays across the board 14% less than the last installment, Beyond would then make a projected $204.68M internationally. You can see where we’re going here.

The all-important China bow doesn’t come for Beyond until Sept. 2. Into Darkness bowed in China with $25.8M before leaving its run at $57M and change. The film also still has to bow in France and Korea (Aug. 18), Spain (Aug. 19), Brazil (Sept. 1), Mexico (Sept. 2), Turkey, Japan (Oct. 21), and throughout Latin America.

Globally, Imax accounted $11.6 mil (on 571 screens) and the picture’s debut set an Imax franchise overseas record without the benefit of China (as we said, it doesn’t arrive there until Sept. 2) or other international territories. Led by very strong results in the U.K. and Russia, Beyond grossed an estimated weekend of $3.2 mil on 184 screens besting Star Trek Into Darkness‘ $2.8M debut.

Some more good news is that the opening is the highest-ever weekend for the franchise in 17 markets, including Russia Taiwan and Thailand.

Looking at key markets in the rollout, the U.K. opened to No. 2 behind The BFG this weekend with $6.1M at 535 locales, which is 37% below the last installment (Into Darkness) and 15% below Star Trek. In Germany, Russia and Australia, it opened to No. 1. Specifically, in Germany it nabbed $4.5M from 558 runs, which means it scored 31% above Star Trek but 29% below Into the Darkness. In Russia, it took in a strong $3.3M at 1,200 cinemas which catapulted it a big 240% above the first Star Trek and 13% above Into Darkness. And in Australia, it grossed $3M in 261 runs which marked 24% Into Darkness and 15% down from Star Trek‘s opening.

In Taiwan, it took No. 1 and grossed $1M at 79 locales which took it 143% above Star Trek and 63% above Into Darkness. Similarly, its No. 1 debut in Thailand ($912K at 64 cinemas) was 76% above Star Trek and 88% above Into Darkness. The Philippines opened at No. 2 ($766K at 162), only 2% above Into Darkness but 92% above the first Star Trek.

    Talent Intl
    SKIPTRACE
Even Tarzan could not hold back the beloved Jackie Chan and Fan Bingbing in China this weekend. His new movie Skiptrace, from director Renny Harlin and which also co-stars Johnny Knoxville, ended up kicking ass and kicking in an estimated $44M in the Middle Kingdom. It sits atop the Chinese box office besting Warner Bros.’ three-day take for The Legend of Tarzan. The total budget for Skiptrace was said to be $60M for its producer Beijing Talent International Media Co., Ltd. Chan stars as a Hong Kong detective who has to team up with an American (Knoxville) to fight a Chinese bad guy. It’s opened in three markets and to date has made $58.5M in its first weekend at bat.

The film enjoys two big draws for Chinese audiences — both Chan and Bingbing are beloved there. Chan is so popular in China that his last film Dragon Blade grossed $121.5M and comparable films such as Police Story and Chinese Zodiac 2012 grossed a whopping $87.3M and $139.6M, respectively, in China. The Chinese-HK production was originally scheduled for a Christmas release last year but was smartly moved to this summer. It will be distributed in the U.S. by Saban, date TBA.

    Beaten out worldwide by Tarzan?!?

‘Legend of Tarzan’ Tops Foreign Box Office With $44.7 Million
    Brent Lang
    Senior Film and Media Reporter
    @BrentALang

The Legend of Tarzan COURTESY OF WARNER BROS

    JULY 24, 2016 | 03:00PM PT

“The Legend of Tarzan” swung to the top of foreign box office charts over the weekend, propelled by a solid opening in China. The adventure epic led competitors with $44.7 million from 17,500 screens in 61 markets. The big contributor was the Middle Kingdom, where “The Legend of Tarzan” picked up $27.1 million in its first six days of release.

The attempt to relaunch Edgar Rice Burroughs’ pulp novels about a man raised by apes has floundered domestically, weighed down by its $185 million price tag. The film’s global total now stands at $260.5 million. That’s a respectable gross, but a film of this size needs to do upwards of $400 million to be considered a success, let alone trigger a sequel, which is basically the point of greenlighting a movie with that kind of budget. Warner Bros. is backing the film, which was directed by David Yates, the filmmaker behind most of the Harry Potter movies. It stars Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan and Margot Robbie as Jane.

In second place, “Skiptrace,” an East-meets-West action comedy, earned $44 million. The Chinese-American co-production stars Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville as a detective and gambler who team up after running afoul of a crime syndicate. Renny Harlin (“Cliffhanger”) directs the movie. It opened in China over the weekend and will get a U.S. release this fall.

Fox’s “Ice Age: Collision Course” and Paramount’s “Star Trek Beyond” were tied for third place, each generating $30 million. Both films opened domestically this weekend, with the latest Star Trek topping charts with a $59.6 million debut. The fifth “Ice Age” fared worse, bombing with $21 million. However, the animated sequel has been in release overseas for several weeks. Its global total stands at a solid $199 million. Worldwide, “Star Trek Beyond” has now earned $89.6 million. It will need to continue to draw foreign crowds if Paramount wants to make a profit on the $185 million film.

Korean zombie film “Train to Busan” snagged fourth place with $27.5 million, while Disney’s “Finding Dory” rounded out the top five with $19.5, pushing its global total to $781.7 million.
Hmm, Train to Busan sounds interesting and I'm not into zombie films anymore.

    Alas, China

Only China would make an official Star Trek smartphone that doesn't look like an old skool Star Trek communicator.

Meizu M3e Star Trek Edition Is Now Official in China
August 31, 2016 - Written By Kristijan Lucic
Star Trek is one of the most popular series / movie franchises out there. The ‘Star Trek: Beyond’ movie played in cinemas earlier this year, and interestingly enough, several images of Star Trek-branded Meizu smartphone surfaced quite recently. That device sported the Starfleet Academy logo and the Star Trek brand name on its back, and we were wondering if the leak is legit and when will Meizu introduce that smartphone. Well, the device is now official, read on.

It turns out this is a limited edition Meizu-branded smartphone, and the device is called Meizu M3e Star Trek Edition. So, this is essentially a Meizu M3e smartphone which was introduced on August 10th, but it sports the Star Trek branding. Now, the retail box of this smartphone also comes with Star Trek branding, and it seems like Meizu also included some Star Trek software on the phone in form of wallpapers, custom boot screen, themes and some other design details. The device is going to be available in China starting today for the equivalent of $225, and those of you who live in China can purchase it through the company’s online store (Meizu Mall). Chances are this device won’t be available outside of China, though it is possible you’ll be able to purchase it through third party resellers at some point. It is also worth mentioning that Meizu will manufacture only 5,000 Meizu M3e Star Trek Edition units, this is a limited edition handset after all.

The Meizu M3e Star Trek Edition features a 5.5-inch fullHD display, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. This smartphone is fueled by the Helio P10 64-bit octa-core processor, and the Mali-T860 MP2 GPU is also a part of this package. The non-removable 3,100mAh battery is included on the inside, and the device’s mBack physical home button doubles as a capacitive back key and the fingerprint scanner. The 13-megapixel shooter is placed on the back of this device, and a 5-megapixel camera can be found up front. Android 5.1 Lollipop comes pre-installed here, and on top of it, you’ll get Meizu’s Flyme UI. This is also a dual-SIM handset, and the phone also supports 4G LTE connectivity

    $31.3 Million in China

‘Star Trek Beyond’ Earns $31.3 Million in China Debut
    Film Reporter Dave McNary @Variety_DMcNary

    SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 | 11:43AM PT

“Star Trek Beyond” has launched impressively in China in first place with a $31.3 million opening weekend at 6,526 locations, seven weeks after its U.S. debut.

The Chinese result is 107% above 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” and 30% above “Jason Bourne.” “Star Trek Beyond” grossed $37 million this weekend from 40 markets including a $1.7 million opening in Brazil and and $1.4 million in Venezuela, pushing its international total to $131.1 million.

“Star Trek Beyond” handily led the international box office for the weekend, which did not see any other major openings.

China is already the top international market for “Star Trek Beyond,” followed by the U.K. with $20 million and Germany with $15 million. Upcoming releases include Argentina and Mexico next weekend and Japan on Oct. 21.

The Paramount Pictures-Skydance production received financial backing from China-based Alibaba Pictures Group and Huahua Media, which has been promoting “Star Trek Beyond” through “Happy Camp,” one of China’s top rating TV variety shows, backed by Hunan Broadcasting.

Huahua also rounded up close to 100 other local businesses as partners on the movie. Notable among these was China International Broadcasting Network, giving it access to apps, ISPs and streaming services.

“Star Trek Beyond” has now grossed $285 million worldwide, including $154 million in the U.S. The numbers have lagged “Star Trek Into Darkness,” which took in $466 million worldwide, including $232 million in the U.S. and $234 million internationally — the first time that the foreign total topped the domestic.

Paramount is already developing another “Star Trek” movie with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprising their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock with Chris Hemsworth playing George Kirk, the father of Pine’s character.

Illumination-Universal’s “The Secret Life” of Pets finished a distant second on the international chart this weekend with $17.3 million for 56 markets, lifting the animated comedy’s foreign gross to $403 million. Universal’s “Jason Bourne” followed in third with $12 million in 65 territories, pushing the foreign total to $223 million.

Warner Bros.’ supervillain tentpole “Suicide Squad” finished fourth with $11.8 million to give the movie a $375 million international total and a worldwide gross of $673 million.

Fox’s “Ice Age: Collision Course” followed in fifth with $8.2 million in 31 markets, led by $6.1 million in its second weekend in China to lift its total to $59 million — just $3 million short of the U.S. total. The fifth “Ice Age” has grossed over 80% of its worldwide total of $389 million outside the U.S.
In answer to DS above, I saw it too. It was ok. Not as awesome as the 1st J.J. ST. Not as rehash/mishmash as J.J. 2 (still don't but the Mr. Roarke/Sherlock swap but liked the big spaceship battles and the attempt at recursiveness). The latest installment feels like an episode, not quite as epic as the others. It needed more callbacks to the original - there were some but not enough. I think Justin Lin got his franchises confused. It leans more towards Wars than Trek. There's too many new aliens like the SW cantina, and the finale is akin to destroying the Death Star but instead saving Yorktown. The characters are all still pretty solid especially Quinto, and Pine continues to stray from Shatner but not too much. It's a bit Scotty heavy, given he wrote it. The passing of Nimoy and Yelchin is logged. I kept thinking Krall was Krull (he did have a chakra like weapon). Jada delivered an ok fight - will she replace Chekov if there's another? As an Asian male, I'm a little bummed about the gay Sulu, but I get that. There's some decent big screen ship explosions and a lot of crooked sets - the ending was predictable, inexplicable, and illogical, but I'll still see the next one if they can reassemble this cast again. Also there was another Grunberg cameo. More SW evidence. He plays the same role as he did in SW. Lucky *******.

SJ Clarkson (Marvel’s The Defenders, Jessica Jones) has been tapped to direct and executive produce HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel pilot from feature writer Jane Goldman and author/GOT co-executive producer George R.R. Martin. Naomi Ackie (Lady MacBeth, Yardie), Denise Gough (People, Places and Things, Colette), Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones), Sheila Atim (Girl From the North Country, Harlots), Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans, Doctor Who), Georgie Henley (Narnia franchise, The Spanish Princess), Alex Sharp (How To Talk To Girls At Parties, To The Bone) and Toby Regbo (Reign, The Last Kingdom) are set as series regulars, joining previously cast Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse.

I hear Clarkson was recruited by HBO for GOT after she recently became available. Earlier this year, Clarkson was the first female director to be tapped to direct a Star Trek movie when she was hired to helm the fourth feature in the current series. That project has since been shelved.

Created by Goldman & Martin and written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin, the untitled prequel takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. It chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

Goldman will serve as showrunner and executive produce alongside Martin as well as fellow GOT co-executive producer Vince Gerardis and Damages and Bloodline co-creator/exec producer Daniel Zelman, Clarkson, James Farrell and Jim Danger Gray. Chris Symes is co-executive producer.

Clarkson most recently directed and executive produced Collateral, a four-part BBC/Netflix four-part limited series starring Carey Mulligan and written by David Hare, and previously directed and executive produced the pilots for Marvel’s The Defenders and Jessica Jones for Netflix.

Ackie will be seen in a leading role in J.J. Abrams-directed Star Wars: Episode IX, set for release in December 2019, and recently wrapped filming a leading role in London-set crime thriller The Corrupted opposite Sam Claflin.

Gough will next be seen on screen in Wash Westmoreland’s Colette, alongside Keira Knightley and Dominic West, and in the lead role in Monday, alongside Sebastian Stan.

Jeremiah will next be seen on the big screen starring in drama The Flood.

Henley, known as young Lucy in all three Narnia franchise films, recently wrapped the first season of The Spanish Princess, a limited series for Starz.

Sharp will next be seen in MGM’S Nasty Women starring alongside Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson.

Regbo is currently shooting Medici: The Magnificent, season 2 of the Netflix series, led by Daniel Sharman.
