My own interest in this subject matter is not in training/learning the art of Yang Style Taiji but in having been on the receiving end of the practice.
It makes no sense! One cannot apply point striking cold against any opponent from the gitgo! Just as in BJJ, there has to be some equal force. movement, etc to trigger an encounter to response in kind. As an example, if you try point strike against a boxer then one will surely get the crap beaten out of them due to the dynamic onslaught of the first punch and the rest will be history.

That has been both my observation and experience but of course, no grey Poupon was involved in the decision making process

The left hand motions in the first 2:30 minutes of this video can be used to temporarily paralyze the opponent's arm. I used to do that to my classmates in drills and sparring.

This soft style Mantis is much like Taiji in concentration, nerve strikes and cavity press/locks were all kept secret in the past. Now there is no real need to do so even though this is still the practice of some of the Asian family lineages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUw4JMKz0Uk#t=212

There is a thread on the forum from a few years back where the OP was asking about healing up from an unintentional kick that he received from a sparring partner that caught him on the inside of the upper arm (radial nerve). Temporary paralysis but also injury. Good reason not to practice point striking on your sparring partners. Traditionally, dummies are used.

My main point is to say that training 'soft' is, and always will be useless in the greater scheme of things. The "yang" hard training reinforces the 'soft' after "gong" has been attained.
This is my ignorance only so anyone who has been blessed with the deadly soft training and they, are demons because of that training, I wish y'all well in your endeavours. Just acknowledging skill when I see it. yah mahn!
