“Furious 8″ will hit theaters April 14, 2017, Vin Diesel confirmed at Universal’s CinemaCon panel in Las Vegas on Thursday.

Choking back tears, Diesel told the crowd of theater owners, “It means a lot to me to get your blessing.” He took the audience back to two years ago when, on the same stage at Caesars Palace, Diesel and Paul Walker, the actor who died in a 2013 car crash, said they planned to move forward on a seventh film in the action franchise.

“We were giddy and excited,” said Diesel. “You all gave me so much confidence. There was so much love.”

At various points after Walker’s shocking death, it seemed that Universal might have to cancel the production. Shooting was not yet complete when the crash happened, but special effects technicians and stunt doubles enabled the completion of the project, resulting in what domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou termed “a cathartic experience for fans of Walker.”

Just before Diesel made his announcement, footage screened of the final moment of “Furious 7, “a scene in which the two characters go on one final car race before going their separate ways.

“You’ve been so loyal all along,” Diesel told exhibitors. “You helped us create history here.”

“Furious 7″ has hit $1.15 billion at the worldwide box office, making it No.7 on the list of highest-grossing films of all time. It’s likely to end up with more than $1.4 billion overall.

Wait...what? It took me a closer read to see that this was just a suggestion by the author and not a done deal, or even a buzzworthy rumor. Nevertheless, I thought it might make a funny ttt for this thread.

‘Furious 8’ Cast With Zhang Ziyi: Will It Break ‘Furious 7’ Box Office Record?
    Conviron Altatis | Jun 30, 2015 04:00 PM EDT

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star Zhang Ziyi is set to reprise her role in John Woo’s “The Crossing 2” with Japanese actors Takeshi Kaneshiro and Masami Nagasawa. (Photo : Reuters)

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are the only "Furious 7" actors who have confirmed to be part of the "Furious 8" cast so far. To surpass the box office success of "Furious 7," the post-Paul Walker sequel should add new cast members such as Zhang Ziyi.

"Furious 8" is happening with its official date confirmed to be on April 14, 2017. Statham recently told Access Hollywood that they are already talking about the sequel and as a newcomer, he "just got invited to the party in this last one" so for him, it is nice to know he is going to be doing another.

Adding Zhang in "Furious 8" will be particularly interesting as there are no Asian actors in the main cast of "Furious 7." Among the Asian actors who played supporting roles in the Walker's last "Fast & Furious" film are Tony Jaa, Sung Kang and Ali Fazal as Kiet, Han and Safar, respectively.

Zhang has yet to star in a Hollywood car chase film so having her in "Furious 8" will be something new for "Fast & Furious" film franchise fans. Bringing the Chinese superstar's martial arts moves in a car chase film is something Hollywood has yet to do.

Known for her films "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "House Of The Flying Daggers," Zhang is set to reprise her role in John Woo's "The Crossing 2" with Takeshi Kaneshiro and Marami Nagasawa.

Meanwhile, fans of the Chinese superstar are puzzled whether she and her fiancé Wang Feng, who appeared as coach of "The Voice Of China" seasons 2 to 4, have wed or split. Under Hong Kong marriage, the three-month deadline for their marriage laws was on June 29, Monday, but the two were not sighted at the marriage registry on that day, Straits Times reported.

Do you think adding Zhang Ziyi to the "Furious 8" cast would be a great idea? Let us know by commenting below.

The largest explosion ever in Iceland

How many large explosions have there been in Iceland exactly? I've never thought of Iceland as a particularly explosive place.

‘Fast 8’ to Be Filmed in Akranes

The Hollywood film Fast 8, the eighth of The Fast and the Furious action movies, will be partly shot in the West Iceland town of Akranes, about 45 km (28 miles) north of Reykjavík, Vísir reports. Mayor Regína Ásvaldsdóttir confirmed this. She told Vísir the film crew will be arriving in April.

Residents of Akranes received the news at their þorrablót gathering. “Surely, this is an extensive project and will affect retail and service in town,” Regína said. She claims residents are excited.

This won’t be the first time for Akranes to be the stage for filming. Part of the US science fiction web TV series Sense8 was shot at the town’s hospital. This time, shootings will mostly take place by the harbor and in the so-called Cement Fields.

Vísir reports the crew has plans to carry out the largest explosion ever in Iceland.

The Fast and the Furious films, have enjoyed great popularity, but the subject is mainly street racing . The latest such film, Furious 7, ranks sixth on record in ticket sales worldwide, grossing ISK 200 billion (USD 1,515 million, EUR 1,400 million).

    Charlize

    Charlize Theron Joins ‘Fast 8’
    Film Reporter Justin Kroll @krolljvar

    REX SHUTTERSTOCK

    APRIL 7, 2016 | 09:59AM PT
Charlize Theron has officially joined the cast “Fast 8,” the next installment in Universal’s long-running “Fast and Furious” franchise, sources confirm to Variety.

Details behind the role are vague, but she’s expected to be playing some sort of villain. The studio went to the star early for the role, but because the script was still being written, Theron did not want to commit to anything until a finished draft was completed.

Even after a script was finished by Chris Morgan and Theron was happy with the end result, she still had to weigh her options as the actress was also attached to star in the Sony spy thriller “The Grey Man,” which is considered a huge franchise opportunity for Theron and Sony. Insiders say since the “Grey Man” script was originally intended for a man, Sony had the script rewritten; because of delays in delivering a brand new script, Theron’s schedule opened up, eventually leading to talks with the two parties.

The latest installment begins production this summer with a planned April 14, 2017, release. Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriguez will reprise their roles, with F. Gary Gray taking over the directing reins. Neil Moritz and Diesel will produce.

Theron, who is repped by WME, can be seen next in “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” as well as “Brain on Fire” opposite Chloe Moretz. Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

    China release secured

Fast 8 could've knocked it out of the ballpark like xXx3 if they added some Chinese to the cast. Maybe it'll still do well.

Universal's 'Fast 8' Lands China Release Date (Exclusive)
12:32 AM PST 3/6/2017 by Patrick Brzeski

    'The Fate of the Furious'

'Furious 7,' the most recent film in the franchise, earned a historic $390 million in China in 2015 and remains Hollywood's biggest release ever there.

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines!

Universal's highly anticipated The Fate of the Furious — the eighth film in the Fast and Furious franchise — has secured a release date in China, the world's second-largest box-office territory.

Fast 8 will open in the Middle Kingdom on Friday, April 14, the same day it debuts in North America and several major markets worldwide, including the U.K. and India. A source close to China's Film Bureau shared the date with THR on Monday.

A spokesperson in Universal Pictures' Beijing office declined to comment.

So far, Fast 8 has the mid-April frame to itself in China. Paramount's Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson, will open the week prior on April 7, while Sony's Smurfs: The Lost Village will debut April 21.

The preceding film in the franchise, Furious 7, became a historic box-office success in China upon its release in 2015. The film, directed by James Wan and the last to co-star the late Paul Walker, set a still unbroken opening-day record of $68.8 million. It went on to become the biggest imported title ever in the Chinese market, earning $390 million — almost $40 million more than the blockbuster pulled in from North America.

The eight installment of the franchise is from director F. Gary Gray and once again stars regulars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson — whose characters will be squaring off against one another. Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson and Kurt Russell are returning for Fast 8, while Charlize Theron is joining the Furious family in a villain role and Scott Eastwood is also among the cast's new faces.

Diesel is coming off another major win in the China market. In February, his xXx: Return of Xander Cage scored a $61.9 million opening weekend, the biggest bow by an imported film so far this year. Its China total currently stands at $155.6 million.

    The Rock rocks PRC

I was invited to a screener to this tonight but I don't have the time to go or to write up the review right now

Besides, unlike the last two installments (6 & 7), there isn't a strong martial arts connection.

'The Fate of the Furious' Sets Chinese Ticket Presales Record
5:09 AM PDT 4/11/2017 by Patrick Brzeski

    Universal Studios
    'The Fate of the Furious'

'Furious 7,' the most recent film in the franchise, earned a historic $390 million in China in 2015 and remains Hollywood's biggest release there ever.

Universal's The Fate of the Furious doesn't open in China until Friday, the same day it gets released in North America and many other major markets around the world. But the much anticipated eighth installment in the car chase franchise is already revving its engines mightily.

The movie, directed F. Gary Gray and once again starring regulars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, has smashed China's all-time ticket presales record, data from Beijing-based box-office tracker Ent Group shows.

As of Tuesday, the film had earned $18.1 million (RMB 125 million) in advanced ticketing revenue, well beyond prior record-holder Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back, a local blockbuster produced by Stephen Chow, which notched RMB 101 million ($14.6 million at current exchange rates) in presales in January (the film went on to earn $240 million). Fast 8's presales kicked off April 2.

The film has also hit a new all-time high for advanced Imax sales in China, pulling in $2.4 million (RMB 16.5 million) so far, unseating prior record-holder Captain America: Civil War, which took approximately RMB 10 million ($1.4 million at current rates) in Imax presales last year, according to leading local movie site Mtime.

Expectations for the Fate of the Furious in China are running understandably high. Furious 7, the preceding film in the franchise, became a historic box-office success upon its release in the country in 2015. Directed by James Wan and the last in the series to co-star the late Paul Walker, the film set a still unbroken local opening-day record of $68.8 million. It went on to become the biggest imported title ever in the Chinese market, earning $390 million — almost $40 million more than the blockbuster pulled in from North America.

Whether the new film can scale those heights remains an open question. After expanding by an average of 35 percent each year for a decade, the Chinese box office has experienced a prolonged slump over the past 12 months. Total box office grew just 3.7 percent in 2016, and the last $200 million-plus Hollywood release was Legendary's Warcraft ($220.8 million) last July. The strong presales are an unequivocally good sign for Universal and its Beijing-based slate financing partner Perfect World Pictures, though.

Universal declined to comment directly on the advanced sales numbers, but a spokesperson in their Beijing office offered, "What we can say now is we are excited about all of the signs, and really look forward to seeing the performance in the market soon."

Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson and Kurt Russell are returning for Fast 8, while Charlize Theron joins the Furious family in a villain role and Scott Eastwood is also among the cast's new faces.

The Fate of the Furious Somehow Scores Biggest Global Opening in History, Despite Lack of White Heroes‬
    By Matthew Dessem

    Vin Diesel couldn’t be happier.
    Universal

The Fate of the Furious, the latest entry in Universal’s street-racing franchise, outran Star Wars: The Force Awakens this weekend, setting a record for the highest global box office opening ever, according to Variety. Its estimated take for the weekend was $532.5 million, with $423.3 million of that coming from the international market. In North America, the film only pulled in $100.2 million (versus a $147.2 million domestic opening for Furious 7), but the international box office more than made up the difference.

It’s a sharp rebuke to the notion that multicultural casts don’t do well abroad, especially when it comes to China, where The Fate of the Furious racked up $190 million. That’s the fastest and furiousest a film—from Hollywood or elsewhere—has ever pulled in Chinese cash over a three-day opening weekend. “Fast cars, outrageous stunts—that’s the international language for something everybody loves,” ComScore media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Variety.

The franchise has now grossed an astonishing $4.4 billion dollars worldwide, enough to buy 2.84 Akula-class Soviet attack submarines. Universal’s share will presumably be loaded into a gigantic bank vault so that studio head Donna Langley can drag it up and down Lankershim at appalling speeds, yelling bromides about family out her car window as the vault smashes into other cars and pedestrians.

    First forum review

The F8 of the Furious - brilliant title F8 for installment 8. It's the only bit that's passingly intelligent about this franchise. Like the rest of the furious franchise, it's dumb. Painfully absurdly unapologetically dumb. In fact, if you stop to think about anything in F8, even the most trifling detail, the overwhelming dumbness unravels everything. But as long as you don't do that, it's not boring. Funny quips. Hot cars. Gratuitous gear shifting. Lots of explosions. Crashes aplenty. Fireballs. Full auto gunplay. Silly physics. 'Roid driven banter. Wobbly cam shot fights but still enjoyable. For a moment, I even regretted skipping F7, because the plot would make more sense, but then I was like 'plot? Srsly?' Charlize was a really good villainess. Stole the show. She made up for the lack of MMA hotties like from the last two installments. Sort of a warm up for Atomic Blonde. Luv Charlize. I'd watch her floss. I'm sure that would be mesmerizing. Charlize flossing in slo-mo. Yeah, I'd watch that in IMAX 3D. I can hardly wait for Atomic Blonde. But I wouldn't recommend F8 unless you just wanna get really dumb - worldwide dumb because F8 killed it at the box office all over the planet. The future's so dumb, I gotta wear shades.

I prefer to watch Charlize floss, Brazilian style; and the floss has to be edible.

China Box Office: 'Fate of the Furious' Overtakes 'Furious 7' to Become Biggest Hollywood Film Ever
7:29 AM PDT 4/30/2017 by Patrick Brzeski

    Matt Kennedy/Universal Studios
    'The Fate of the Furious'

No American movie has ever earned more in local currency in the massive Chinese film market.
Universal's The Fate of the Furious is now Hollywood's top-grossing film ever in China.

On Saturday, the latest installment in the locally beloved action franchise clocked in at 2.44 billion yuan (about $350 million) at the Chinese box office, overtaking its predecessor Furious 7, which earned an historic 2.42 billion yuan in 2015.

After its opening on April 14, Fate of the Furious, directed by F. Gary Gray and starring franchise mainstays Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, smashed China's all-time opening-weekend records for an international film with a huge debut of $190 million.

Midway through its third weekend in North America, Fate of the Furious was expected to stay atop the chart with an estimated $18.5 million for a domestic total of $192 million through Sunday. Globally, the film just crossed the $1 billion mark.

Prior to Fate of the Furious' release, many analysts wondered how much of Furious 7's success should be attributed to a "farewell Paul Walker" effect. The franchise favorite died in a violent car crash during a hiatus in shooting in 2013, making the seventh installment the last title in which he would appear. Thus, Fate of the Furious' chances of surpassing its predecessor were considered quite uncertain.

In U.S. currency, Furious 7 still remains slightly ahead. Due to a weaker dollar at the time, the pic's 2.42 billion yuan total was valued at about $390 million in 2015 (today it would be just under $350 million). But Fate of the Furious will continue to add to its local currency record until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in China on Friday, so it may yet top Furious 7 in unadjusted U.S dollar terms as well.
Box-Office Milestone: 'Fate of the Furious' Crosses $1B Globally

    'The Fate of the Furious'

The eighth outing in the octane-laced action franchise becomes the 30th film to achieve the milestone, and the fourth title Universal title to do so in its original run.
Universal and director F. Gary Gray's The Fate of the Furious has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office in yet another victory for the enduring series.

Fate of the Furious is in rarefied air, becoming the fourth title in the history of the 105-year-old studio to achieve the milestone in its original run after Jurassic World ($1.67 billion), Furious 7 ($1.52 billion) and Illumination’s Minions ($1.16 billion). Jurassic Park also crossed $1 billion in its rerelease.

Through Sunday, the eighth outing in the Fast and Furious series has earned $192.7 million domestically and a massive $867.6 million overseas, where it has shattered numerous records (international grosses account for a whopping 82 percent of the bottom line). China leads with $361 million, the top showing of all time for an imported film (Furious 7 was the previous record-holder).

Fate of the Furious once again stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell. Newcomers include Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren and Scott Eastwood. The story follows a villainous superhacker (Theron) who turns Diesel's character against his crew.

Earlier this month, the movie scored the biggest worldwide launch of all time with $542 million, eclipsing Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 million).

Fate of the Furious is the 30th film to earn $1 billion or more globally, and the second movie of 2017 to achieve the milestone after Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which has grossed north of $1.1 billion to date.

Fate of the Furious is also the highest-grossing film helmed by an African-American director.

    Fast and Furious 9?

Time to start that next thread? Eh, maybe not just yet. I'll wait for the starting gun. And when we do, this will be the starting line.

Michelle Rodriguez Downplays 'Fast and Furious' Departure Talk

    Michelle Rodriguez

“I’m sure he’ll convince me,” she said of co-star and producer Vin Diesel after an Instagram post in which she said her character needed more development.

After an impassioned Instagram post that was widely interpreted as a goodbye to the Fast and Furious franchise, Michelle Rodriguez said it was less a threat than an encouragement for the writers to explore the female characters more.

While the series of films has cast strong female characters with Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron starring in recent outings, the movies don’t pass the first step of the famed Bechdel test where women interact as individuals and not as accessories of men.

“We always see the guys talking, we know what they’re thinking and we know their relationships, but I can count with one hand in eight movies how many times the women talk to each other,” said Rodriguez. “So it’s, ‘Who are they, what are they about, and do you care?’ I just brought up a question, and if that doesn’t get answered and as I start on this path [of more dramatic roles], I just wonder if our paths meet at all.”

However, the actress emphasized her strong relationship with franchise co-star and producer Vin Diesel. “I’m sure he’ll convince me,” she said of coming back for the next installment. Rodriguez said Diesel is aware of her concerns, and while both see it as a platform to promote multiculturalism within Hollywood, she also wants the films to evolve and address global violence against women and other cultural issues. “Yes, you’re there to entertain people, but when you’re on that scale you also have a responsibility. I won’t accept anything else, and Vin won’t accept anything else. He knows, he gets it.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Deauville Film Festival, where she was set to receive a career honor, Rodriguez also called out Hollywood for its lack of diversity. “You know you penetrate 80 percent of the [global] market, but you don’t want to take on the responsibility of representing those markets you are penetrating,” she said. “Represent the grand majority of the cultures and involve them in your storytelling — don’t just feed us your whiteness.”

The actress also cast doubt on her returning for the next installment of James Cameron’s Avatar. Her character died at the end of the last film, and it seems it will stay that way. “They’re bringing a lot of people back from the dead, but I don’t think I’m one of them,” she said.

After forging a career with a series of tough-chick roles, Rodriguez said she felt she was hitting a career ceiling and is refocusing on the craft of acting. First up is portraying a housewife in Steve McQueen’s upcoming heist film Widows, which she found more challenging than some of her more physical roles.

Taking on the role of an unambitious wife who hasn’t ventured far from the neighborhood she grew up in was “one of my greatest fears,” said Rodriguez. McQueen took her to a lot of uncomfortable places which forced her to grow as an actress, she explained.

Rodriguez is now focused on finding more of these roles — save perhaps for the lead in an action film down the line — and producing her own material.

“There aren’t enough women out there doing it, and I don’t want to be an example of somebody who sucks. I feel like I have a weight to carry,” she said of the two-year development of her first project, a CIA drama for television that she is set to pitch to networks soon.
“I’m sure he’ll convince me" - I'm sure the ridiculous payout will convince Michelle. That would convince anyone.

    Fast and Furious 9

    Time to split this thread.

Universal also announced that Walt Dohrn is returning to direct 'Trolls 2.'

The ninth installment in Universal's high-octane Fast and the Furious franchise is being pushed back a year, the studio said Wednesday.

The movie, which doesn't yet have a director, was to have raced into theaters on April 19, 2019. It will now open April 10, 2020, which is Easter weekend. Many of the franchise stars are returning, led by Vin Diesel. It is unclear whether Dwayne Johnson will return.

Earlier this year, Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment, boasted the biggest global launch of all time on its way to earning $1.238 billion worldwide. The main franchise continues with Furious 9 and Furious 10, which has a release date of April 2, 2021. It's unclear whether Furious 10 will reschedule.

Following the release of Fate of the Furious, Universal began plotting a Fast and Furious spinoff with Johnson and Jason Statham. It's possible the spinoff could be released in 2019.

In addition to the Fast 9 news, Universal and DreamWorks Animation announced that Trolls 2 will move up from April 10, 2020, to Feb. 14, 2020, and that Walt Dohrn is returning to direct the film, while Gina Shay will once again produce. (Dohrn co-directed Trolls with Mike Mitchell.)
