League of Gods aka Feng Shen Bang aka Fengshen Yanyi

We're a little behind on this one.

Tony Leung and Shu Qi Lead All-Star Cast of Upcoming “Feng Shen Bang”
By joanna on March 21, 2014 in Movies

Above: Angelababy, Huang Xiaoming, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Shu Qi star in “Feng Shen Bang”.

Judging from the recent box office success of Stephen Chow’s (周星馳) Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons <西遊·降魔篇> and Cheang Pou Soi’s (鄭保瑞) The Monkey King <西游記之大鬧天宮>, the mainland Chinese film market is ripe for movies adapted from Chinese mythological tales. One such upcoming project is Feng Shen Bang <封神榜>, a 3D film that will star Tony Leung Ka Fai (梁家輝) and Shu Qi (舒淇), and is scheduled to begin filming in September.

Feng Shen Bang, which will be co-directed by Wilson Yip (葉偉信) and Koan Hui (許安), is based on the 16th-century Chinese novel Feng Shen Yan Yi <封神演義>, often translated as The Investiture of the Gods. The story tells of how King Zhou of Shang (Tony Leung) becomes a tyrant due to the wiles of Daji (Shu Qi), a vixen spirit who is disguised as one of his concubines. After a series of battles involving mythological intervention, King Zhou of Shang is overthrown by King Wu of Zhou and his strategist Jiang Ziya (Jet Li 李連杰).

With a budget of 300 million HKD, Feng Shen Bang is considered a comeback project for China Star Entertainment Group, a well-known film production company that hit an economic rut in 2005. Because CEO Charles Heung (向華強) and his wife Tiffany Chen (陳明英) are friends with many top entertainment stars, much of the Feng Shen Bang cast agreed to take on the film for a fraction of their market worth. Even Jet Li, who initially turned down the movie due to health issues, changed his mind because of his friendship with Heung.

The cast for Feng Shen Bang also includes Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明) as Erlang Shen, Angelababy (楊穎) as a mermaid, Louis Koo (古天樂) as Buddhist wisdom god Mahamayuri, Wen Zhang (文章) as Nezha, and Jacky Heung (向佐) as Leizhenzi. To the disappointment of Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy fans, however, the real-life couple will have very few scenes together.

Jet Li Faces The Supernatural In Fengshen Yanyi
    kingofkungfu
    Hong Kong/Chinese News

Also known as: Investiture of the Gods, The Apotheosis of Heroes, The Canonization of the Gods

Fengshen Yanyi is the latest movie which will feature legend Jet Li going up against the supernatural, something even i did not see coming (But im glad it did). The director will be Wilson Yip (Ip Man), the movie will be based on the 16th-century Chinese novel by Xu Zhonglin about a declining Shang Dynasty set in (1600 BC–1046 BC) and the rise of the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC–256 BC).

    Plot:
The novel is a romanticised retelling of the overthrow of King Zhou, the last ruler of the Shang dynasty, by Ji Fa, who would establish the Zhou dynasty in place of Shang. The story integrates oral and written tales of many Chinese mythological figures who are involved in the struggle as well. These figures include human heroes, immortals and various spirits (usually represented in avatar form like vixens, and pheasants, and sometimes inanimate objects such as a pipa).

Bewitched by his concubine Daji, who is actually a vixen spirit in disguise as a beautiful woman, King Zhou of Shang oppresses his people and persecutes those who oppose him, including his own subjects who dare to speak up to him. Ji Fa (King Wu of Zhou), assisted by his strategist Jiang Ziya, rallies an army to overthrow the tyrant and restore peace and order. Throughout the story, battles are waged between the kingdoms of Shang and Zhou, with both sides calling upon various supernatural beings – deities, immortals, demons, spirits, and humans with magical abilities – to aid them in the war. Yuanshi Tianzun bestows upon Jiang Ziya the Fengshen Bang, a list that empowers him to invest the gods of Heaven. The heroes of Zhou and some of their fallen enemies from Shang are eventually endowed with heavenly ranking and essentially elevated to their roles as gods, hence the title of the novel.

Fengshen Yanyi will feature Chinese mythology, which will include immortals and spirits. When i think of spirits or the dead, i suddenly think of lam Ching Ying movies like Spooky Encounters. I think it’s an interesting move for both director Yip and Jet Li and look forward to seeing the outcome and hopefully a few fight scenes featuring Jet Li.

The movie will also feature Shu Qi (Gorgeous), Louis Koo, Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Huang Xiaoming.

    Jet's final film?

    HOME > ENTERTAINMENT >
'League of Gods' star Jet Li reveals plan to retire from the film business

    Maolen E. | Jul 06, 2016 05:13 AM EDT

Chinese actor Jet Li (R) and director Ronny Yu attend a news conference after the premiere of his movie 'Fearless' on February 23, 2005 in Seoul, South Korea. The movie 'Fearless' will be released in South Korea on March 16, 2006. (Photo : Getty Images/Chung Sung-Jun)

Li Lianjie, who is professionally known as Jet Li, is retiring. The 53-year-old martial artist and actor recently revealed his plans to call it quits after ten years.

During a charity event in Beijing, China on July 2, "The Forbidden Kingdom" star uncovered that he intends to bow out and quit the movie business soon. Before that, he plans to help build platforms to benefit young people in different commercial enterprises.

The action star also addressed reports suggesting his deteriorating health. Li said he would like to tell the public frankly regarding his disease and let them know that he is facing it calmly and dealing with it positively.

"I have the disease, I'm struggling, but I'm not in a wheelchair yet," China.org.cn quoted Li as saying before a predominantly Chinese crowd.

The actor was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 2013. Since his heart rate can hit 130-140 as normal, Li maintains some steroid medicines for a long time. He has been advised not to do any sort of vigorous movements nor exercise.

Li has been enjoying a reprieve from acting, though he had a cameo role in 2014's "The Expendables 3." He was initially stated to be appearing with Vin Diesel in "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage," but has been replaced by Donnie Yen.

Earlier reports claimed that Li personally chose to exit the project for as-yet officially undisclosed reasons. Li then addressed the claims, stating that his absence was because of his illness, his new hobby of memorabilia collection and religious faith.

Nonetheless, Li will be making his big screen comeback as Jiang Ziya in "League of Gods," an upcoming Hong Kong-Chinese fantasy film directed by Koan Hui and Vernie Yeung. Based on the 16th-century Chinese novel by Xu Zhonglin's "Fengshen Bang," the upcoming film recounts the tale of how King Zhou (Tony Leung Ka-Fai) of Shang turns into a tyrant due to the wiles of a vixen spirit, Daji (Fan Bingbing), who is disguised as one of his concubines, City on Fire reported.

With an estimated production budget of $300 million, the film is scheduled for release in China, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom on July 29. Check out the trailer below:

    Bona

EXCUSIVE: Set for a July 29 release through Bona Film Group in the Middle Kingdom, League of Gods is being billed as a “Chinese X-Men.” The action fantasy pic is directed by Koan Xu and boasts a starry cast that includes Jet Li, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Fan Bingbing, Louis Koo, Angelababy and Xu Qing. There’s also CGI work that’s somewhat reminiscent of last year’s summer smash Monster Hunt. Check out the exclusive international trailer above.

The story is based on Fengshen Bang, an ancient novel that is part of Chinese mythology. Featuring a group of unique superheroes, the film tells the story of how King Zhou of Shang becomes a tyrant under the spell of Daji, a vixen spirit who is disguised as one of his concubines.

League of Gods comes in at the tail end of the Chinese summer season that’s reserved for local films (though two Hollywood pictures this year were given a small slice of July real estate). It’s due to be released on over 15K screens.

The creative team includes composer John Debney (The Jungle Book), animation director Randall William Cook (The Lord of the Rings), sound designer Brent Burge (The Hobbit) and editor Wayne Philip Wahrman (I Am Legend). Producers are Hong Kong-based China Star’s Charles Heung and Tiffany Chen. South Africa-based Distant Horizon (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Shepherds and Butchers) acquired international sales in Cannes.

The U.S. release is through AMC of course

These films generally don't get promoted outside of Chinese language media. Remember what happened with Chinese Zodiac, which had a fairly wide U.S release. You just have to watch the Asian-Pacific tab on the AMC site for local listings when the film opens:

    Opens tomorrow!

‘League of Gods’ Jet Li and Huang Xiaoming are the best friends you wish you had

Jet Li in a scene from 'League of Gods' courtesy of Encore Films.

SINGAPORE, July 28 — Chinese fantasy film League of Gods may not have hit theatres just yet, but it has already been generating buzz for promising to be a production of epic proportions.

Directed by up-and-coming film-makers Koan Hui and Vernie Yeung, the HK$300 million (RM156.637 million) blockbuster is based on an old Chinese tale, The Investiture of the Gods, and has been dubbed “the Chinese version of X-Men”.

While the premise is a straightforward adaptation of ancient Chinese folklore — one that is often used as material for various other films and TV series — the elements that set League Of Gods apart are its heavy use of elaborate computer animated graphics, and star-studded cast.

Set in the Shang Dynasty, the movie features Jet Li’s Jiang Ziya as he assembles a band of underdogs — Ji Lei played by Jacky Heung, Er Lang Shen played by Huang Xiaoming and Nezha played by Wen Zhang.

    Their mission?

To seek a mystical sword that will help Ji Lei and his new squad overthrow the tyrannical King Zhou, played by Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Fan Bingbing’s Daji, his concubine who is also an evil vixen spirit in disguise.

    Homecoming

The movie, in particular, marks Li’s first film role in two years. The action star was last seen on the silver screen in 2014, in the Hollywood movie The Expendables 3.

“I watched Jacky Heung grow up, and now, it’s great seeing him become a star in his own right. He’s grown a lot in the five to six years he’s been in the film industry. Now that he’s the lead, we all lent our support,” said Li on his decision to join the cast, in a phone interview direct from the movie’s premiere in Beijing.

Friendship and loyalty were also the ties that bound Huang to star in League Of Gods.

“The Heungs are my god-parents, and Jacky Heung’s my god-brother. So I had to help my friends and family out. It’s also a good opportunity to showcase his strengths and capabilities as an actor and martial artist,” Huang said in a separate phone interview with the Singapore press.

Their statements support claims that the biggest stars from Hong Kong and China — Li, Fan, Huang, Leung and Louis Koo, among others — were all gathered to support Heung in his first lead role.

Heung’s parents, renowned film producer and co-founder of Win Entertainment Charles Heung and Tiffany Chen, are the producers of League Of Gods.

    Fighting through the pain

Concerns were raised over Li’s role in the movie, as reports of his failing health due to numerous martial arts injuries over the years and a bout of hyperthyroidism surfaced.

However, as Li put it, “Jiang Ziya is a character who uses words and cunningness as his weapons, so I didn’t have to do a lot of fighting. In any case, my health is fine now, and with advancements in technology, there’s always a way to recreate action scenes in spite of any physical impediments. Look at the film adaption of Transformers, they managed to get cars to fight.

“The most troublesome part of the production process is actually the makeup. The hair pieces for my beard had to be placed one by one, which took a long time. I wondered why they couldn’t just use computer animation to attach the beard on my face,” Li joked.

For Huang, however, being a great friend came at a cost. After sustaining leg injuries while filming Chinese fantasy flick The White Haired Witch Of Lunar Kingdom in 2012, Huang told us that he still feels pain when he does action sequences or stands for too long — both of which he did plenty of in League of Gods as Er Lang Shen.

“The costume for Er Lang Shen was also very heavy and warm. So every half an hour, I’ll feel faint and will have to rest,” said Huang.

“As an actor, no matter how difficult it is, you still have to work hard to give your best. I still do most of my own stunts, so I just tolerate and push through the pain and fatigue. I always keep in mind the crew and cast, people who are counting on me to do my job well. I persevere for all their sakes.”

Besides the physical hurdles, there was also emotional terrain for Huang to cross. His wife, Angelababy, stars in the movie as Heung’s love interest. When asked if it bothered him that Angelababy has romantic scenes with his god-brother, Huang said: “We both act for a living, so I’m used to it. I never limit her in terms of job choices because I honour and trust her decisions for her own career. It is not my place to tell her what to do.”

With the support of Li and Huang — two of Chinese cinema’s most bankable stars — along with a host of both established and emerging actors and actresses, League of Gods looks to be more than Jacky Heung’s big break. — TODAY

    * League Of Gods officially opens in cinemas tomorrow.
I hope to see this after work tomorrow.

China Box Office: Jet Li’s ‘League’ Tops ‘Skiptrace’ to Win Weekend
    Patrick Frater

    JULY 31, 2016 | 04:48PM PT

“League of Gods,” a Chinese fantasy action film with lavish special effects and lashings of stars, took the top spot at the Chinese box office over the weekend. But its performance was earthbound, rather than heavenly.

Starring Jet Li, Fan Bingbing, Angelababy and Louis Koo, “League” scored $30.5 million in its opening three day run. That was comfortably enough ahead of Jackie Chan-starring holdover “Skiptrace.”

“League” held top spot on each day, with an $11.6 million opening day. But its score declined thereafter and and its lead over “Skiptrace” narrowed. “League” played on a massive 70,000 screenings per day, compared with roughly 47,000 for “Shiptrace,” giving the Chan adventure a superior per screen average.

“Skiptrace” added $20.5 million. Its cumulative total after 11 days stands at $109 million.

A distant third place was held by “Legend of Tarzan” with $5.52 million for the weekend. After 13 days it stands on $41.3 million.

Chinese animation “Shen Mi Shi Jie Li Xian Ji 3” was the second placed new opener. It managed $5.30 million for the weekend.

Japanese cartoon, “Doraemon Nonita and the Biorth of Japan,” picked up $2.39 million. After 10 days it has picked $14.5 million.

Other weekend places went to “”Girl of the Big House” ($1.65 million,) “Cold War 2” ($1.20 million,) “Big Fish & Begonia” ($!.15 million,) “A Busy Night” ($1.01 million) and “Sweet 16” with $640,000.

    First forum review!

This film gets a huge WTH? in glorious 3D no less. Great costumes. Very visual. Fan Bingbing was a great fox demon. It begins like the finale of an overblown CGI epic comic book film and gets more ridiculous from there. The plot is convoluted. Or maybe it's too simple. There was so much visual bombast going on that it was hard to follow. If you know the classic source material, perhaps it makes more sense, but I don't really know it so I got a little lost in the characters. The fight scenes are amusing, lots of CGI wire fu, but that was to be anticipated. Crazy stuff - SPOILER A giant monster crab is split by a baby **** END SPOILER. Everything whooshed and boomed. Too much whoosh boom. Too much of everything really, but not enough substance to hold it together. And like Baahubali, after all those exhausting effects, this is just part 1, so it ends with a clunk.

I would've preferred it without subtitles. They were too distracting. It would have been better just to bask in the visuals and listen to some other non-whoosh-boom soundtrack, maybe some dubstep or something.

I went with our copy editor, on opening night last Friday for the 7-ish 3D showing ($16+ but the 3D was pretty good, so I'm going to say 'worth it'). There was only one other person in the theater.
