Thanks Gene. I saw that today as well. Unbelievable that they would drop this 20 some days out. Last time there was more notice which gave people a chance to plan accordingly. Not sure if I will be attending or not at this point, had started to give up on the idea after not finding or getting any information. Pity too, because we had students who were excited and wanted to compete but I can't go to my kids and parents now and tell them the tournament is in 23 days, time to make your reservations and get your plane tickets. Anyway, will let you know if Xingying and I decide to go.

Shi Yanran believes the Abbot will be in attendance. He claims there is a delegation of 30+ senior monks that are coming for sure.

    Updated schedule

Looks like the Gala Banquet (see earlier post) has been removed. Bummer. That sounded novel, given the location.

This was a real let down. A group of us from Colorado had registered to compete at this tournament when it was open to anyone who wanted to participate. Sad to see it canceled and now being a private event. Maybe in another two years they'll hold one again like the one in L.A.

    Collateral damage indeed

I am planning to be at the Stanford talk, but I'm not sure if I'll be videotaping. Obviously, I'm doing a story on all of this. That'll be fun.

Several Shaolin friends are in town from all over the nation (there's even one international traveler that I know of). I feel really bad for them coming all this way. On the up side, it's Fleet Week here in S.F., so at least they will not be lacking in entertainment. There's nothing like being strafed by the Blue Angels.

Interestingly enough, USSD still has its site operational. The weekend is listed as the USSD Northern California Tournament and Shaolin Festival. Saturday is listed as a USSD Tournament and Sunday as a Shaolin Monk Seminar, all at City View at Metreon.

Shaolin Temple's official site and SANA's site do not look as if they got the memo yet.

    At least there's Stanford

I am planning to attend this. I think it's the only significant thing left standing really. I hope most of the Shaolin family who are in town because it was too late to change their plans will be there too. To any of them following this thread, here's the Fleet Week info, although when the Blue Angels are in town, they are impossible to miss.

Shaolin: Ancient Wisdom in the Modern Age

    Friday, October 9, 2015
    4:00 pm
Paul Brest Hall, Munger Building 4, 555 Salvatierra Walk, Stanford University

Sponsored by: Center for Biomedical Ethics, Health Improvement Program

A cultural exchange examining the physiological and psychological benefits of meditation will be led by senior leaders from the Shaolin Temple in China, and will include collaborative programs with members of the Stanford community. Topics will include the history, elements, and benefits of Shaolin arts and culture, effects of stress in modern life, the role of qi in wellness, meditation and the mind/body connection. The integration of Chan (Zen) wisdom and Shaolin Kung Fu, a moving meditation, will be demonstrated in a performance by visiting Shaolin Monks from China, as well as students (faculty/staff) from Stanford's own Shaolin Kung Fu class, offered through the School of Medicine's Health Improvement Program.

    * Learn about the history of the Shaolin Temple, the founding of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, and the development of Kung Fu, Shaolin medicine and the arts from Master Shi YanKai, Monastic Supervisor and Inheritor of Shaolin Kung Fu, and Master Shi YanLin, Director of Shaolin Pharmacy Bureau and Inheritor of Shaolin Medicine. Both are senior leaders from China's Shaolin Temple.

    * See how Stanford is collaborating with the Shaolin Temple. Speakers include Dr. David Spiegel, Willson Professor and Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Director of the Center on Stress and Health, and Medical Director of the Stanford Center for Integrative Medicine; and Tia Rich, PhD, Stanford Senior Specialist in Health Promotion, and Director of Contemplation by Design program.

    * Explore the mind/body connection, stress reduction, the role of qi in wellness, and meditation. Guest speaker Chade-Meng Tan will talk about his Chan (Zen) practice experience. He is a Google pioneer, an award-winning engineer, a New York Times best-selling author, a thought leader and philanthropist, and is also quite funny!

    * Participate in a discussion with the Shaolin Monks, and Stanford speakers.

*Enjoy a Kung Fu demonstration from the Shaolin Monks, and Stanford's Shaolin Kung Fu class, offered through the School of Medicine's Health Improvement Program.

I've heard some pre-registered people have received emails about refunds. The Shaolin Monks Kung Fu, Way of Life show has been removed from the Nourse theater website schedule and City Box office says this:

    The refund email

One of my Shaolin ninjas forwarded me the refund email below.

USSD Headquarters has just been notified by Mr. Wang, (the spokesperson for the Shaolin Temple in China) that due to circumstances beyond their control and the failure to obtain all of the necessary Visa’s as well as meet other new restrictions and governmental regulations, regrettably the Temple Delegation must cancel their show on October 11th at the Nourse Theatre. Please contact the theatre for a refund if you have already purchased tickets for the show. The kung fu tournament scheduled for Saturday October 10th has also been cancelled. Please respond to this email for a refund on the tournament. Thanks
