What are the top 5 martial arts book publishing companies out there?

If it was taboo, we'd delete it and you'd be banned.

Patience, wiz cool c, patience. Maybe someone will heed your plea and answer you. Maybe.

I'd answer myself but that would require more time than I have right now to post here.

In the past, I could have mentioned companies like Tuttle, Kodansha, Plum Publications, etc. I would still rate those highly, but I rarely buy or even read many MA books anymore (and I have LOTS of them), and my criteria for what makes a good MA book has shifted over the years. And for me, the publishing company has had little or nothing to do with it.

For example, IMO, the best MA-related book is "Secrets" of Effective Offense by Marc MacYoung (2005). The photos are nothing to write home about, but the info is absolutely priceless and not style-specific. And don't let the photos fool you; MacYoung is one of the most credible authors for applied MAs. It's published by The Lyons Press, but I didn't know that until I checked just now.

I can't think of many anymore.
Self publishing is getting pretty popular too.

    There's the academic presses too

I've enjoyed publications from UofH press and Cambridge U press, and SUNY has an upcoming title that I'm very interested in reading.

I like publications from Journal of Asian Martial arts.

Some good articles with "peer" reviews.

I like the book review section of the journal.

However, they stopped the paper printed journal.

They still maintain on line presence.

Internet and digital publishing killed many paper printed journals and books.

If you are looking into publishers that specialize in martial arts specifically...

    These come immediately to mind:

Plum Publications (previously mentioned by Jimbo)

JAMA (previously mentioned and hyperlinked by SPJ)

    YMAA

Blue Snake Books (an imprint of North Atlantic)
