Yuen Woo-ping, Tsui Hark remake Miracle Fighters

YUEN Woo-ping 袁和平 is to direct a remake of his own The Miracle Fighters 奇門遁甲 (1982). TSUI Hark 徐克 is on board as writer and producer.

The original fantasy comedy was about a young warrior who uses the martial arts skills he learned from two Taoist priests to defeat an evil sorcerer in a competition.

Yuen says that aside from sharing the title of the film, Miracle Fighters 奇門遁甲 will tell an entirely new story. He said that if the original film was meant to present an alternative form of wuxia film, the new film intends to redefine it. The filmmakers did not divulge the plot at this time.

In addition to writing the script, Tsui is producing with Nansun Shi under his Film Workshop Co Ltd 電影工作室有限公司 banner.

The film will be Yuen and Tsui's first collaboration since Black Mask 2: City of Masks 黑俠Ⅱ (2002) more than a decade ago. The duo's previous collaborations include Once Upon a Time in China II 黃飛鴻之二男兒當自強 (1992) and The Twin Dragons 雙龍會 (1992).

The new Miracle Fighters is set to begin production after the Lunar New Year holiday with theatrical release set for 2017.
    This is really promising.

This might be good. We'll have to see. It's good they aren't actually trying to remake the original. IMO, even Yuen Woo-Ping couldn't remake it as good. The original is a classic. It inspired not only several similar follow-up films by the Yuen family, but it also inspired a trend of special effects in HK films, including the Shaw Bros films Ghosts Galore, Descendant of the Sun, Buddha's Palm, etc. The old, pre-CGI effects still have a certain charm and creativity about them that I'm not sure the new, modern CGI can ever match in spirit.

Wait...is this going to be like the new Ghostbusters where the remake recasts all the roles to women?

Oh, Kris Wu is a dude. Sorry. I keep forgetting that.

THE THOUSAND FACES OF DUNJIA (2017) Official Trailer | Yuen Woo Ping

THE THOUSAND FACES OF DUNJIA (2017) Official Trailer | Yuen Woo Ping

With THE THOUSAND FACES OF DUNJIA, legendary director Yuen Woo Ping and writer/producer Tsui Hark breathe new life into the wuxia genre, weaving together fantasy, humor, and breathtaking martial arts action. Dao, a naïve young constable, discovers a secret society with supernatural abilities that has protected mankind for centuries. As he’s drawn into a power struggle within their ranks, they learn that an ancient creature with the power to destroy the world is rising - and it will take all of their powers combined to stop it.
I just realized this is the remake of Miracle Fighters (1982) that I posted about back in 2015. I'm merging this thread with that one.
