    Umbrellas with Sword Handles

    This had to go here.

    Samurai Sword Handle Umbrella
Rain - prepare to be defeated.
    * Umbrella with the handle of a samurai sword.
    * Nylon scabbard (Katana has adjustable shoulder strap).
    * In full and travel size.
    Fight the Rain

    The rain falls softly.
    The samurai draws his sword.
    Look, an umbrella.

Either we just made it up, or that Haiku dates to around the 14th century. It is a little known fact that Samurai also carried umbrellas. Much as they later had to disguise their swords as canes, so they disguised their umbrellas as swords. In fact, there was one skilled umbrella maker who all the Samurai relied on for their Sword Handle Umbrellas. His name has been buried in the sands of time, but his plans have been preserved. And now, it is with great pleasure that we offer to you, the Samurai Sword Handle Umbrella.

Glide it out of its nylon sheath. Hold it by its space-age plastic handle. Feel the balance. This is the umbrella you never knew you always wanted. No one will mess with you with this slung across your back, and even the rain will shudder when you pull it out. For, apart from looking unbelievably awesome, the Samurai Sword Handle Umbrella is a dang fine umbrella. It comes in full Katana size and travel Tanto size - for however you need to pack it.It will keep you dry and the envy of your friends. Precipitation doesn't stand a chance.

    Sword umbrella

    Remember the Sword Umbrella?

Samurai sword umbrella triggers university police hunt
    5:30 AM Thursday Jul 26, 2012

A man in a long black trenchcoat and carrying what looked like a samurai sword forced a school into lockdown and sent armed police to the University of Waikato in Hamilton yesterday.

Sixteen police were sent to the university to scour the grounds after reports of an armed man about 9.30am.

It took 90 minutes to find him.

He turned out to be a 25-year-old member of the university's sword fighting club, who was in fact carrying an umbrella that looked like a weapon.

"The sword is actually an umbrella that, when a button is pushed, activates," Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend said. "The man was quite shocked at the response his activities had generated and most apologetic. We are currently working to identify the supplier of these devices and others which include an imitation shotgun."

Mr Friend said that although such items were not illegal, people needed to use a "degree of common sense" about where and how to use them.

"The member of the public who rang 111 did exactly the right thing. We would far prefer to deploy to an incident and find there is no threat than ... fail to learn of a genuine incident."

Mr Friend said police worked with the university to send out an alert email to everyone on campus to find the man in the trenchcoat. During the scare, police ordered a local primary school to activate its emergency plan and go into lockdown.
The funny thing to me is that he was a member of the 'university's sword fighting club'.

    Another sword umbrella false alarm.

Here's the first sword umbrella incident. I would love to rock one of these but I know I'd get busted for it.

Police storm train at London station... after passenger's umbrella mistaken for a Samurai sword
ROBIN DE PEYER, RACHEL BLUNDY Tuesday 8 December 2015

    Samurai brolly: Ray Brown Twitter/@notblackbutbrwn
A young Londoner has told how police stormed the train he was on after passengers mistook his umbrella for a Samurai sword.

Police boarded a packed train at Deptford after reports of an armed man in one of its carriages on Monday morning.

Panicked passengers had raised the alarm after mistaking the umbrella 22-year-old Ray Brown was carrying for a deadly weapon.

A picture tweeted by Mr Brown minutes after the incident went viral, racking up thousands of re-tweets by amused social media users.

The digital creative from Abbey Wood told the Standard he was on his way to his aunt’s house in Stockwell when his journey was interrupted.

“I had this umbrella with a handle that looked like a Samurai sword,” he explained.

So Police just held up my train for 10 minutes because they thought my umbrella was a Samurai Sword

“They (police) got on the train but they didn’t even notice the handle. They went up and down the train about five or six times before they saw it. There were about six of them – they were very professional.”

Mr Brown said police simply inspected the umbrella before disembarking the train and allowing passengers to continue their journeys after the ordeal.

He added that he thought passengers were more wary of strangers on the rail network after a “terror-related” stabbing at Leytonstone Tube station on Saturday evening.

    Train ordeal: Ray Brown

Mr Brown, who runs a blog in his spare time, also revealed his taste for “quirky” items, saying: “If I can get something practical and a bit quirky then that’s what I’ll go for.”

He said he later received concerned calls from friends after the image began to go viral on Twitter – with some fearing he may have been taken into custody.

And he admitted: “That picture makes me look like I’m about to take over the train, because of the Russian hat and the Samurai sword umbrella.”

A British Transport Police spokesman confirmed officers were called to Deptford Station after passengers raised the alarm.

“We were called at 10.30am on Monday, 7 December, following reports of a man carrying an item which looked like a sword on a train travelling towards Deptford,” he said.

“Officers met the train at Deptford station and spoke to the man. The item was found to be an umbrella, and no further action was necessary.

“While this incident turned out to be a false alarm, the report was made in good faith.”

Now this topic is its own indie thread

I just poached this off the Bad Day for Samurai Wannabes thread. Now that there's three, it should stand on its own.

This is such a stupid idea for a product. The only thing more stupid would be to make an umbrella handle that looks like an AK-47 butt.

Armed police storm train after umbrella mistaken for samurai sword sparks 'panic'
    TOM MARSHALL 9 hours ago

Police stormed the station 'like a Swat team' @ClaireChurchx/Twitter

Armed police stormed a train in south London after an umbrella sparked "panic" when it was mistaken for a samurai sword – for the second time in just over two months.

Officers descended on the train at Mitcham Eastfields at about 10.45am on Tuesday after reports of a man carrying a blade.

However, the man in question only had an umbrella with a samurai-style handle.

Witness Claire Church, who was at Mitcham Eastfields, said it was like "a Swat team" had surged into the station.

She added: "The station staff told us there was a problem with the train, but then we saw the police and realised it was an incident.

“They were running down the platform and there was around six of them.”

The incident caused delays of about 20 minutes. It comes after officers stormed another train in south London in a similar umbrella-related incident in December.

Tweeting from the official account for Merton police, a Met officer said the umbrella brought panic to the train and that the response had "wasted" resources.

They wrote: "Several police resources wasted this morning – male on train at Mitcham Eastfields with an umbrella with a samurai sword handle.

“Caused a lot of public panic. Thank you to the person who called it in though – better to be safe than sorry.”

    British Transport Police also attended.

A spokesman said: “On arrival, it was established the item was not a weapon and no offences had been committed.”

Washington state hospital placed on lockdown after umbrella mistaken for rifle

A hospital in Washington state went into lockdown for more than an hour Wednesday morning after an umbrella an employee was carrying was mistaken for a rifle, police said.

Emergency dispatchers received a call from EvergreenHealth in Kirkland, about 10 miles northeast of Seattle, after a doctor observed a man walk into the hospital with what appeared to be a rifle slung over his shoulder and reported it to hospital security, Lt. Robert Saloum, public information officer for the Kirkland Police Department, told ABC News.

Officers responded quickly to the scene, and the hospital was placed under lockdown, Saloum said. As officers were searching the building, the hospital released a surveillance image of the man on social media, asking for anyone who may know him to contact authorities.

From the angle of the security photo, the umbrella -- which features an ornate handle similar to a medieval-like sword -- appears to be weapon, Saloum said. By the way the man was carrying the umbrella, it looked as if he could reach over his shoulder and "grab it straight out," Saloum said.

After seeing the image on social media, the man, who happened to be an employee at the hospital, contacted security to alert them of the mistake, and police were able to contact him and confirmed that what purported weapon was, in fact, an umbrella, Saloum said.

The umbrella "absolutely looks like a large weapon" such as a rifle muzzle or sword, Saloum said, calling the ordeal a "bad misunderstanding." The lockdown was lifted after less than two hours, he said.

"It's a large hospital -- a lot of area to go through until he realized he was the one we were looking for," Saloum said.

It is unclear which hospital department the employee works in or whether he had brought the umbrella to work before, Saloum said. A spokeswoman for the hospital was unable to confirm the status of his employment with ABC News.

Hospital staff continued to care for the safety and well-being of patients while operating within the lockdown protocol, police said.

“While our officers continually train and are well prepared to respond and intervene in active shooter incidents, we are truly grateful that this was not indeed a rifle," Kirkland Police Chief Cherie Harris said in a statement.
