    Avengers: Infinity War

I know - this doesn't drop until 2018, but with the Chinese connection, it's already time to launch this thread.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Directors Russo Brothers Reveal That a Paintball Game Led to Marvel Gig

Joe and Anthony Russo describe their “20-year Cinderella story” at Produced By conference on Sunday
The brothers behind Disney-Marvel’s behemoth billion-dollar hit “Captain America: Civil War” are riding high as they embark on their first set of Avengers movies.
While there’s tremendous pressure to perform, directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who are also producing an array of projects, are bent on staying focused.
“We really try to block all that stuff out,” Joe said during Sunday’s Produced By panel at Sony Studios in Culver City, Calif. “We’ve found over years our best successes have been finding a piece of content that we make for ourselves and hope everyone likes it … When you make choices from fear or under pressure you make bad choices,” he added.
When it comes to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, there’s a danger in working in the comic book genre, warned Anthony. “It can become stale,” he said. “We love manipulating and subverting genre in ways audiences aren’t expecting,” he added of the directing duo’s approach.
The filmmaker siblings were on hand to share their career learnings and offer the audience, filled with directors and producers, advice. They’re more than qualified to do it, seeing as “Civil War” is the first movie in 2016 to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.
Their blockbuster breakout was 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but before that they worked on television comedies “Community,” “Happy Endings,” and won an Emmy for “Arrested Development.”
So how did they make the leap from TV to one of the biggest film franchises on the planet?
It turns out Marvel president Kevin Feige really liked an episode of “Community” that they did, a show that involved a contentious paintball competition, which cleverly spoofed the action genre.
“Feige brought us in and found out we’re huge comic book fans and pop culture junkies,” said Joe. “We connected on a lot of levels and had a lot of specific ideas about Captain America.”
Now, the two are preparing to make both upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War” movies back-to-back — with Part I due out in May 4, 2018, and Part II set for May 3, 2019. “‘Infinity Wars’ is being shot together purely because of the scale of cast,” said Joe. “Cast schedules are the driving force.”
Cameras will start rolling on the next set of Avengers movies at the end of this year, Joe said, adding that they’re spending a lot of time with Feige and the writers to perfect the screenplay. “What’s most important in these large-scale movies is if you add as much information in script, typically, the movie has better chance of being comprehensive and the audience enjoying it.”
But big movies aren’t the only place where the Russo brothers’ passion lies, Joe recalling how they pair were discovered by Steven Soderbergh after their 1997 debut indie “Pieces.”
“He was the only one in the business who responded to this film,” said Joe. “It’s a Cinderella story, but a 20-year Cinderella story,” he added, calling the brothers’ career “a series of shoestring saves,” wearing many hats on micro-budgeted projects.
His advice to filmmakers looking to grow their career: “If you want to be a carpenter, build a lot of tables. If you want to be director or producer, direct and produce as much as you can.”
The two share a capacity to take on a lot of work and say making television shows is more labor intensive than moviemaking. “Creating for television and film is at its best when content and structure are feeding off each other,” said Anthony, referencing production constraints on “Arrested Development” which, in turn, inspired them to reinvent the long tradition of single-camera comedy into the show’s innovative mockumentary style.
Now the world is, quite literally, opening up for the brothers, as the two have launched Anthem & Song, a studio based in Bejiing, China. The two go to China every other month, now, to work with Chinese filmmakers on Chinese-language films. “There’s more diversity of storytelling than you can find her right now,” said Joe.
The sibling filmmakers are also producing the STX Entertainment thriller “17 Bridges,” written by Adam Mervis (“The Philly Kid”), and currently in development. The story, said to be a hybrid of “Inside Man” and “The Fugitive,” follows a fallen NYPD detective who is offered one chance at redemption as manhunt for a cop killer ensues.
“New York is on lockdown for 90 minutes,” said Joe. “It’s a real-time thriller.”
Joe and Anthony have also joined Michael B. Jordan as producers on MGM’s planned remake of the classic heist movie “The Thomas Crown Affair,” which is currently in development. Joe called Jordan “one of the great actors of today,” noting that he’s been a fan since the actor’s run on “Friday Night Lights.”
On top of all of that — plus the Avengers movies — the two are working on a marijuana-themed half-hour sitcom for Showtime. The series follows a family of pot dealers whose operation is upended when the drug is legalized and marks the Russo brothers’ return to TV.
    More on the Avengers.

    $500,000 for Puerto Rico relief

Avengers Cast Members Raise $500,000 for Puerto Rico Relief
BY MAX EVRY ON NOVEMBER 7, 2017

Avengers cast members raise $500,000 for Puerto Rico relief

Scarlett Johansson, her fellow Avengers cast members and The John Gore Organization raised $500,000 toward the relief efforts in Puerto Rico in the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Maria with a star-studded benefit reading of Thornton Wilder’s classic play “Our Town” on Monday, November 6th at Atlanta’s iconic Fox Theatre. The evening featured Tony Award winner Scarlett Johansson along with her Avengers co-stars: Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr.; Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner; Tony Award nominee Mark Ruffalo; Chris Evans; Frank Grillo; and Maximiliano Hernandez. The evening was directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon and organized by Ms. Johansson and The John Gore Organization.

“We are all deeply touched by the outpouring of generosity and support from the local community,” Johansson said. “We knew we could count on you, Atlanta!” John Gore, Chairman and CEO of the John Gore Organization, added, “We couldn’t be happier to support our friend, Scarlett, and her co-stars in producing this evening for such a worthy cause.”

The event played to a full house and a very enthusiastic crowd. With over 3,500 tickets sold, it is one of the largest audiences the play has ever been presented to in one night. Johansson was joined on stage for opening remarks by director Kenny Leon and Xiomara Caro from the Maria Fund, sharing an inspiring message about the purpose of the event and the relief effort. They brought the crowd to their feet when they revealed that the evening’s efforts resulted in half of a million dollars raised to help Puerto Rico in their hour of need.

“We are deeply grateful to Scarlett Johansson, Kenny Leon and everyone involved in the production of this play for stepping up and contributing their talent to help towards the equitable and just rebuilding of Puerto Rico. This event demonstrates the importance of collective solidarity and responsibility and how powerful it is when we come together to help our communities,” said Xiomara Caro, Director of New Organizing Projects for the Center of Popular Democracy and coordinator of Maria Fund. “A month after Hurricane Maria, millions are without power, or regular access to clean water and food. But there are also hundreds of grassroots organizations and community-run initiatives that are building community everyday to provide relief and organize a short and long-term response to all of these issues. This is the kind of initiatives Maria Fund is supporting,” Caro added.

The Hurricane Maria Community Relief & Recovery Fund is housed at the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) and funds will be used to support immediate relief, recovery and equitable rebuilding in Puerto Rico for low-income communities of color hit hardest by the storm. The fund will support organizations working on the frontlines with these communities.

    Avengers: Infinity War Trailer Tease

I don't really get trailer reaction videos. Maybe I'm too old.

Let's see who gets the IW trailer posted here first tomorrow. I'll be on the road on assignment, so that'll be my handicap.

    April 27

    MAR 2, 2018 @ 01:05 PM 97,629 2 Free Issues of Forbes
What The 'Avengers: Infinity War' Date Switch Means For 'Deadpool 2' And 'Solo'
    Scott Mendelson , CONTRIBUTOR
    I cover the film industry.
Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

    Walt Disney and Lucasfilm
    'Solo: A Star Wars Story'

Apparently tired of letting 20th Century Fox cause all of the release date musical chairs chaos, Walt Disney rearranged the entire summer schedule (and royally screwed up my predictions for the biggest grossers of each month) by shifting the global release, now including North America, of Avengers: Infinity War to April 27 instead of May 4. We’ve already seen Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty move to April 20. I am expecting Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage, currently set by Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. for April 20, to move somewhere ****her away from Infinity War. But shifting the summer kick-off giant to late April also turns the month of May into a mano-a-mano competition between Deadpool 2 (May 18) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25).

This all started when Fox moved their untitled Deadpool sequel (which I’m hoping actually ends up being titled Untitled Deadpool Sequel) from June 3 to May 18. At the time, it was considered a potential “blood in the water” move against the troubled Star Wars Story. In retrospect, it may be an interesting battle between two big flicks that have some surface-level similarities. Both are spin-offs featuring fan-favorite characters from a huge and expansive fantasy universe. Both feature lovable rogues who, to varying degrees, are more anti-heroes than conventional heroes. And both are, to varying degrees, having to balance selling themselves as something different from the norm and something comforting to fans of their respective genre or franchise.

That’s not to say Solo and Deadpool 2 are the same movies. In terms of giving to spin-off to a guy who was a lead anyway, Solo is closer to the X-Men Origins: Wolverine than to Deadpool. At least part of the decision to replace Phil Lord and Chris Miller with Ron Howard was apparently rooted in the desire to have a movie that was a more straight-faced fantasy adventure (an action movie with comedy, as opposed to a comedy with action). Deadpool 2 will play around with genre tropes and break the fourth wall on a semi-regular basis. The Star Wars Story is an all-ages PG-13 adventure while Deadpool 2 is an R-rated action comedy aimed at older kids and adults.

If these big date changes had been in place on New Year’s Day when I did my annual “biggest grossers of each month” post, the predictions would have looked very different. For one thing, The Nun would be the clear frontrunner in September, all due respect to Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish’s Night School. If I were forced to predict which big May release would be the top grosser, what exactly would my pick have been? That’s a tough one. Before we even try to guestimate this, we should note that Deadpool 2 is a lot cheaper than Solo, meaning the former can gross a lot less than the latter, especially if it’s well-received, and still be considered an equivalent success.

Solo is (presumably) a family-friendly action comedy while Deadpool 2 is an adults-only action comedy. The Ryan Reynolds sequel is riding on the goodwill of a previous $783 million-grossing installment and the Han Solo prequel will have to overcome distrust due to the behind-the-scenes melodrama and the arguable cynicism of the core concept. Solo will be the consensus pick for large groups of age-varying moviegoers, but Deadpool 2 will have the benefit of the doubt. Quality matters, especially if Solo works better than anticipated or Deadpool 2 plays like a warmed-over comedy sequel. I’m curious when Disney will drop the embargo for Solo (presuming it doesn’t screen at CinemaCon), as they have thus far held Star Wars movies close to the vest.

Alien: Covenant notwithstanding, the weekend before Memorial Day weekend is one of the best slots to open a big movie, as seen by four Shrek movies, three Star Wars prequels and the likes of The Matrix Reloaded, Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Trek Into Darkness. Memorial Day weekend may look good on paper, it’s a terribly frontloaded frame, although Universal's Fast and Furious 6 and Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales did earn nearly $800 million worldwide in the slot in the last few years. We could be in a situation where both Solo and Deadpool 2 earn around $700m worldwide, but the former ends up on the defensive while the latter is heralded as an unmitigated success.

However fair that might be (reshoot-related budgets aside, anything over $600 million is a solid single for Solo, especially if it’s good), we should also note that Solo is just one of Disney’s very big 2018 releases alongside Incredibles 2, Wreck-It Ralph 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War while Deadpool 2 is Fox’s biggest shot in 2018 unless Alita: Battle Angel goes bonkers over Christmas. Neither of them will get much of a boost from China (Deadpool may not play there and Star Wars isn’t a thing in China). If backed into a corner, I’d crown Solo because betting against Star Wars is about as smart as betting against Marvel, but this could go either way.

Avengers: Infinity War shifting to late April leaves more money on the table for both Deadpool 2 and Solo, which may be part of the point (especially if Disney does end up buying Fox). So now it’s just a matter of seeing what else transpires (like Rampage theoretically moving to April 13 against Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare) and which of the two big May single character spin-off action comedies will fare best here and abroad. Or maybe this is a “whoever wins, we win” situation for fans and genre nerds. But it should be fun to watch, especially if both movies are fun to watch. What say you? Will can the Merc with the Mouth win the month or will Star Wars reign supreme yet again?

May 4th would've been awkward as it's Star Wars Day.

    May 11 in PRC

    MARCH 29, 2018 7:54PM PT
‘Avengers: Infinity War’ to Get May Release in China
    By Vivienne Chow

“Avengers: Infinity War” has secured a May release date in China.

The third in the “Avengers” series will open May 11, two weeks after its April 27 debut in North America and the bulk of its international rollout. The North American release had previously been set for May 4, but was recently moved up a week. The release in China falls after the country’s important May Day public holiday.

Talent from the film is expected to visit China from April 19 and conduct press meetings at the Shanghai Disney Resort.

Films imported into China are subject to an annual quota, and must be submitted for censorship approval. Regulators set release dates for foreign titles, and revenue-sharing films are released by state-owned distribution companies.

Anthony and Joe Russo returned to direct “Avengers: Infinity War,” which also sees stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland, and Mark Ruffalo reprising their roles. In this latest installment, the Avengers will also team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, lead by Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord.

The Russo brothers directed “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War,” which became 2016’s top worldwide grosser with $1.16 billion. Joss Whedon directed 2012’s “The Avengers” and 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Worth posting just to see the PRC poster.

    Big Tits & Green Fatty

Also FIRST FORUM REVIEW: I enjoyed it. I haven't laughed so hard in a film in a long time. Very entertaining on all levels - and you know how I generally disdain comic book movies. The last few MCU flicks have won me over.

AVENGERS: “GREEN FATTY” AND “IRON CAN” ARE SET TO SMASH CHINA’S BOX-OFFICE RECORDS

By Zheping Huang May 11, 2018

Marvel’s latest Avengers installment—Avengers: Infinity War—hits theaters in China today (May 11), a few weeks after debuting to massive success elsewhere. The delay won’t hurt the film’s chances judging by early ticket data, the franchise’s earlier success, and the popularity of Marvel characters in what this year has become the world’s biggest movie market.

But those characters, in China, get widely used nicknames in a way not seen elsewhere. Examples:

Captain America: 大奶队长 (Dànǎi duìzhǎng), or “Captain Big Tits.” Sometimes just “Big Tits.”
Spiderman: 小虫 (Xiǎo chóng), or “Little Bug.”
Hulk: 绿胖 (Lǜ pàng), or “Green Fatty.” (On an unrelated note, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is called “Kim Fatty the Third,” and Japanese cartoon character Doraemon is dubbed “Blue Fatty.”)
Thor: 锤哥 (Chuí gē), or “Brother Hammer.”
Iron Man: 铁罐 (Tiě guàn), or “Iron Can.” Fans also call him 妮妮 (Nī nī), a feminine equivalent of similar sounding 尼尼, because Tony Stark’s first name is 托尼 in Chinese (also because Robert Downey Jr.’s last name is 唐尼). They think Stark is cold on the outside and warm on the inside, like some girls.
Black Widow: 寡姐 (Guǎ jiě), or “Sister Widow.”
Hawkeye: 肥啾 (Féi jiū), or “Fat Birdie.”
Avengers: 妇联 (Fùlián), or “Women’s Federation.” The superhero group is officially known as 复仇者联盟 (Fùchóu zhě liánméng) in Chinese, or “Avengers’ Federation.” The shorthand for that is 复联, and 复 is a ****phone for 妇 (women).
Analysts believe Infinity War is poised to become (paywall) the biggest-ever weekend debut in China, with a shot at $200 million or more.

Before its domestic release today, it had already raked in nearly $50 million in presales in China, setting a new all-time record for advance booking. The movie also notched 56.7 million yuan ($9 million) in the midnight box office, edging the previous record held by The Fate of the Furious since April 2017, according to data from Taopiaopiao (link in Chinese), a ticket-booking app.

On Douban, China’s equivalent to IMDb, Infinity War currently holds a rating of 8.6/10, with most reviews being generously positive (link in Chinese). One states, “It’s a combination of the best of all Marvel films: the most tragic Ragnarok, the most hot-blooded Ugandan, the most manly Captain America, and the most desperate Stark.”

Reads another: “There’s no time to pee during the movie.”

    Avengers 4

I'm splitting Avengers 4 off from Avengers: Infinity War right away.

'Avengers 4' Directors Announce Film Has Wrapped With Puzzling Photo

What could the bright blue light be?

Joe and Anthony Russo on Friday announced that production had wrapped on their highly anticipated, yet-to-be-titled fourth Avengers movie — but they also left fans scratching their heads.

Along with tweeting their news, the brothers' account shared a picture of a bright blue glowing light.

Marvel fans immediately went into overdrive trying to figure out what it meant.

In the previous film, Infinity War, half of the superheroes died, so one fan theory about the light was that one more hero is going to die. And since Chris Evans recently confirmed he was done playing Captain America, sights were set on him.

Of course, it could just be the brothers messing with fans and a picture of a set light.

Either way, fans are going to have to wait some time to find out. Before the pic is released, Brie Larson's Captain Marvel will hit theaters March 8, with Avengers 4 is set to open May 3.
