    Cupping

How is it that we don't have a thread dedicated to cupping here?

Well, this is a poor example to start out with, but here goes.

When cupping goes VERY wrong: Man left with seven horrific holes on his back after month-long botched therapy

Li Lin was sent to hospital after developing a high fever after cupping
The man from China had started treatment to cure his 'frozen shoulder'
Cups were placed in the same place every day for a month
Halfway through his treatment he developed blisters and popped them

Horrifying images have emerged of a man left with seven holes in his back after undergoing cupping therapy which went wrong.

63-year-old Li Lin from Chengdu, China, was promised that the treatment would make his 'frozen shoulder' feel better, reports the People's Daily Online.

The man says he had been having cupping treatment every day in the same place for around a month when large blisters started to appear.

Shocking: 63-year-old Li Lin received daily cupping treatments to cure his case of frozen shoulder

From May 22 to June 20, Li underwent cupping in a small massage parlour to try and cure his frozen shoulder.

Frozen shoulder is a condition that leads to pain and stiffness in the shoulder and in some extreme cases people are unable to move their shoulder at all.

He said: 'The clerk advised me to stick to cupping for a month to cure my frozen shoulder'.

Cupping is a therapy in which heated glass cups are applied to the skin creating suction and are thought to stimulate the flow of energy inside the body.

During treatment, the man had the cups placed in exactly the same place every time.

Li said that during the last ten days, blisters began to form on his back from the locations the cups had been placed.

Instead of stopping the treatment, he asked his wife to pop the blisters before rubbing his back with oil.

Doctors say that he was lucky he went to the hospital when he did otherwise he would have developed sepsis

On June 20, the man went for cupping treatment and during his walk home, he began to feel uncomfortable and had a high fever.

His family rushed him to the hospital.

Surgeon Xie Liang said that when Li was sent to the emergency room with a fever of 37.7 degrees and his back was completely swollen.

On examination, it was found that he had a bacterial infection.

Doctors said that it was lucky that Li came to the hospital when he did as if he had continued then he would have developed sepsis.

Medical staff said that the cupping should not have been done in the same position as it causes skin burns and infections.

Li's situation is improving and is not considered life threatening.

    Cupping vs backstabbing

More on Gwyneth here and here.

Gwyneth Paltrow called out for being a ‘backstabber’
    By Oli Coleman July 12, 2016 | 8:50pm

“Difficult People” creator and showbiz insider Julie Klausner says Hollywood stars only pretend to be pals — and Gwyneth Paltrow is among the phoniest “backstabbers” in Tinseltown.

“They pretend that they are [all great friends], but the stuff that is said about people behind the scenes is really terrible,” she told us at a second season premiere of her Hulu show.

“Well — Gwyneth Paltrow — there’s many a tale to tell,” she said at the Metrograph theater. “All kinds of backstabbing.”

While comedian and writer Klausner was mum on the specific details, she figured of Paltrow, “she’s into [Eastern therapy] cupping now — maybe she’s cupping instead of backstabbing.”

Klausner is starting to sound like her character on “Difficult People,” in which she stars with Billy Eichner as two struggling New York comedians who hate everyone.

Paltrow, whose showbiz pals include Jessica Seinfeld, Mario Batali and Jay Z, was once superclose with Madonna, but the duo fell out over the Material Girl’s ex-trainer Tracy Anderson, who is now sculpting Paltrow’s derriere, as well as those of many Hamptons and Manhattan moms.

Klausner has taken a shot at Paltrow before; in March, she tweeted, “Click here to witness the chemistry between Gwyneth Paltrow and Jimmy Fallon AKA the comedy version of ammonia and bleach!”

Cupping therapy popular with Olympic athletes

Athletes Go For Gold With Red Spots Blazing

    August 8, 20164:31 PM ET

Swimmer Michael Phelps won Olympic gold again Sunday while covered in red — red spots, roughly medal-size, all over his shoulders and back.

The marks were the result of an ancient Eastern medicinal therapy known as cupping that is achieving new popularity among some athletes in the United States, including numerous Olympians.

Cupping typically involves treating muscle pain and other ailments with cups that apply suction to skin. Cupping is often combined with other forms of alternative medicine, such as acupuncture and massage.

"The practice itself is very old," says Karyn Farrar, a physical therapist at Rehab 2 Perform in Frederick, Md. "In the past five to 10 years it's becoming prominent in terms of physical therapists, athletic trainers and massage therapists [in the United States] using it more and more." Farrar's office treats five to 10 athletes — mostly high school and college students — with cupping each day.

Farrar says cupping is like a reverse form of massage. Instead of applying pressure downward onto muscles, she says, "you're using negative pressure to pull soft tissues apart" from the suction of the cup. "As you're pulling, you're also getting increased blood flow to the tissues."

She claims the practice decreases swelling in acute injuries and speeds up healing. The large red spots are caused by the bursting of small blood vessels near the skin.

Farrar says she expects more athletes to ask about the treatment after seeing the very visible signs of its aftermath on some of this year's Olympians.

According to Ted Kaptchuk, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who is trained in Asian medicine, the cupping trend isn't exactly new in the U.S. Cupping has a long history in Western medicine and was commonly practiced by American physicians in the 18th and 19th centuries.

But Kaptchuk says cupping fell from favor in the U.S. in the 1920s when practitioners of Western medicine began to see the practice as "old-fashioned," in part because of a lack of scientific evidence that it had a true healing effect.

Today, while some studies have explored the effects of cupping, there is still scant scientific evidence supporting its healing potential.

"We need rigorous research to understand whether there is a physiological effect associated with cupping and currently that is unknown," says David Shurtleff, deputy director of the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

NCCIH currently doesn't fund research on cupping, partly because the studies are challenging to design. It is difficult to know whether a patient feels better after cupping because the treatment worked on a physical level or because the patient expected to feel better and so does — in other words, the placebo effect.

But Shurtleff and Kaptchuk agree that a placebo effect from cupping could work to reduce pain with or without an underlying physical benefit.

While there is still limited scientific evidence supporting cupping, Kaptchuk says that "what we do have, is that people feel better after it's done."

For Olympians, that feeling may be just enough to help them on a trip to the medal podium.

Michael Phelps is a great endorsement

Heck any major Olympic medalist is a great endorsement. Remember when Bruce Jenner got us all to eat Wheaties?

I've been seeing a lot of web news bits on Phelps and the cupping scars. That's great exposure. What amuses me most about this (for several reasons) is that the Chinese athletes don't have such scars. They seem to be using some sort of modern patches for the most part.

Lea Michele Mocks Tabloid for Report on Her 'Breakup Binges' as John Stamos and Emma Roberts Giggle

No one messes with Lea Michele!

The 30-year-old actress recently came across a tabloid story reporting that she's been on a "breakup binge," and decided to confront the rumors head-on with little help from her Scream Queens co-stars, Emma Roberts and John Stamos.

"What are you reading?" Stamos asked Michele in a video posted to Twitter on Thursday.

"Lea's Breakup Binges," Michele responded, before reading the article out loud. "She's been binging on pastas and baked goods and blowing off her regular workouts. She's put on 10 pounds! Oh my goodness."

"It's taken a toll on her self-esteem and she's caught in a vicious cycle of binging!" she added, in her best dramatic voice.

"What are we going to eat for lunch?" Roberts joked.

"Pasta and baked goods!" Michele hilariously replied.

While it seems Michele hasn't been on a binge cycle, she's definitely been changing up her health routine.

The actress took to Snapchat the same day to show off some bruises from a recent cupping session -- how very Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Phelps of her.

"So today I did cupping… and now I have all these," she said as she snapped a video of her back from the mirror.

The actress hasn't exactly been shy about showing off all her hard work, as she posed completely naked for the September cover of Women's Health UK.

"I just turned 30, so I figured, 'Why not?'" she told Ellen DeGeneres last month. "I feel in pretty good shape, and it's very interesting, though, just walking around naked, going, 'I'm ready!'"

Kim K jumps on the cupping bandwagon.

Kim Kardashian is giving cupping therapy a try to ease her neck pain.

The alternative medical treatment, in which suction cups are heated and placed on the skin to improve blood circulation to sore muscles, has become a hot topic since Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and his fellow Team USA competitors were spotted sporting dark red bruises from the therapy during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Now it appears Kanye West's wife is trying out the ancient Chinese health treatment for herself after taking to Snapchat late on Monday 8 August 2016 to share her new adventure.

    The cupping procedure.

In a series of posts, Kim revealed she was undergoing an acupuncture session followed by cupping therapy from the comfort of her own bedroom to help fix a neck issue.

"OK guys, we're going to do acupuncture on my feet and my hands to try to help my neck," she explained in a brief video. She then posted a photo of a tray of glass cups and added the caption, "Trying cupping!"

Kim has yet to update fans about her treatment, and whether or not it helped to rid her of the pain in her neck, but she was back in the gym on Tuesday morning, when she uploaded a clip of herself working out.

The mother-of-two has been dedicated to slimming down after giving birth to son Saint in December 2015, and recently announced she is just five pounds (2.27 kilograms) off her goal weight of 120 pounds (54.43 kilograms).

Kim isn't the first Hollywood celebrity to try cupping - Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, and Jessica Simpson have all previously given the treatment a go.

Victoria Shows Off Her Not So Posh Cup Marks

While making her way through the airport on Friday, Victoria Beckham revealed some dark circular markings on her back.
The temporary marks are most likely from a type of acupuncture called "cupping".
Maybe the next time Posh gets another treatment she should give Jessica Simpson a call. We hear she's really into that right now.

Justin Bieber is doing more than just deleting his Instagram to detox. In recent photos of him on the beach, it appears that Justin has made more visits to his healer for some cupping. The wellness technique made waves during the Rio Olympics when Michael Phelps showed up with the signature circular bruises on his back, but Justin and many others have been fans of the alternative treatment for a long time. Justin has been photographed numerous times before with cupping bruises, and even showed them off in a magazine shoot.

Cupping is an ancient Chinese healing practice that involves placing a special cup on the skin then using heat or an air pump to create suction. The suction is meant to pull the skin up and away from the muscles underneath, and proponents of the method say it reduces stress and promotes blood flow said to help heal muscles. Even though the cups are only left on for a few minutes, it's enough time for a big circular bruise to form. Basically, the cups are giving you big hickeys.

There's no real scientific payoff from cupping and it's pretty expensive to get, but even still, stars, athletes and many others have adopted the ancient healing practice. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston are both known to practice cupping, and U.S. Olympic gymnast Alex Naddour said cupping his the "secret" that's kept him healthy. He even has his own set of cups.

Even though stars and top athletes do it, be sure to do your research if you're considering cupping. Make sure to check out the risks as well as the reported benefits. Particularly because it can be costly, it's best to know exactly what you're spending that holiday cash on, instead of just hopping on the healer's table.

Nina Dobrev takes one for the team

    She was good in xXx.

Nina Dobrev turned to cupping therapy to get rid of cold
    PUBLISHED 19/01/2017

    Nina Dobrev
The actress has been travelling the world promoting her new film xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

Actress Nina Dobrev underwent cupping therapy to help her beat a cold when she fell ill while promoting her new movie xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

The former The Vampire Diaries actress, who stars alongside Vin Diesel and Ruby Rose in the action film, has been travelling all over the world in recent weeks and her crazy schedule left her battling a nasty cold.

"I've been in London, Mexico City, Brazil, kind of all over the place," she told Live with Kelly on Wednesday (18Jan17). "(It's) exhausting and fun. You throw the birthday in there last week. It's kind of just been no rest for the weary. When you're travelling to so many different places on planes... I got sick."

Desperate to get healthy as quickly as possible, Nina tried a different method to beat the blues.

"Sometimes they have a set doctor come and I tried Eastern medicine, Asian medicine as well," she said. "I wanted to get acupuncture and all these different types of different things because I was trying to get better and the woman after the acupuncture said, 'Do you want to try cupping?' I had no idea what that was, so I said, 'Yes, whatever it takes to get rid of this cold. Please just do it'.

"She's like, 'OK, you don't have anything coming up?' And I was thinking next two or three hours: 'No I'll go home and go to bed'. I didn't realise she meant the next two to three weeks... It sucks all the toxins out, (but) I didn't realise she meant, 'Are you doing anything for the next two to three weeks, because you might look like you got attacked by an octopus'."
Doesn't count unless we see the suction cup bruises. It's not like she's timid about showing off her scars.

HOLLYWOOD ACTRESSES NOW CUPPING THEIR FACES IN COUNTDOWN TO OSCARS
8:00 AM PST 2/6/2017 by Kathryn Romeyn

Procrastinators and late-breakout nominees still can shine on the red carpet with treatments that use everything from advanced tech to ancient practices. Says Kate Beckinsale, it's "like sending your face on vacation, finding it a boyfriend and buying it a really great dinner."
So you might not have planned as meticulously as Harold Lancer's clients — of which about 32 were nominees and winners during the last awards season — who began their skin-care show prep three months out. As of mid-October, the Beverly Hills derm already had three potential best actors get in touch for the 2017 awards campaigns. Average spend per season: $5,000 to $10,000. Says Lancer, "Appearance matters because it helps the entire mood of the person under pressure."

Now it's more like three weeks out to Movies' Biggest Night. And as traumatic as it may look on Gwyneth Paltrow's or Michael Phelps' back, cupping — an ancient Asian inflammation-fighting practice beloved by stars from Hollywood to the Hamptons — has moved to the face and is one of the most popular anti-aging treatments among The Spa on Rodeo's awards-season-focused clientele (12 sessions for $400; thespaonrodeo.com). At Santa Monica's Beauty Park, nurse Jamie Sherrill — beauty guru to studio heads' wives and Oscar winners — uses small glass cups for mild suction and to drain the lymph nodes, getting "rid of any sign of a jowl and fight[ing] inflammation for a perfect profile or over-the-shoulder photo moment," she says. "The facial muscles work as hard as the rest of the muscles, so facial cupping can help alleviate the effects of stress." It also provides a youthful look without risking loss of volume as with a radio frequency machine or heated laser. Sherrill recommends it two days before an awards show in case of redness ($200, or $75 add-on to any facial; beautyparkspa.com).

Facial cupping is a great antidote to the "many late nights" of festivals and awards campaigns, says Venice-based esthetician Kat Rudu. Says client Kate Beckinsale, “any facial treatment with Kat is like sending your face on vacation, finding it a boyfriend and buying it a really great dinner.” Rudu’s facial cupping therapy incorporates her Jewel Serum Oil, so the heated, soft silicone cups glide easily without leaving bruises. ($130-plus for a 30-minute treatment; katrudu.com)

    MORE LAST-MINUTE OPTIONS

Four 2016 Oscar nominees had the Intraceuticals Oxygen Facial at the Spa at Four Seasons L.A., which deeply hydrates, softens fine lines and brightens the skin tone ($275). … Taraji P. Henson stopped in to Kate Somerville (a go-to for Lily James, Anna Kendrick and Elizabeth Olsen) the day before the Emmys for the Ultimate Kate, during which her skin was infused with hyaluronic acid and oxygen and exposed to LED light for an enhanced glow ($385; 323-655-7546). … Julianne Moore's and Rachel Weisz's facialist Joanna Vargas worked with several best actress nominees to get them photo-ready using various tech: "Red carpet season for a nominee is extremely stressful because they are so busy, they are also spending a lot of time in the air, which is horrible for the skin. LED reduces inflammation, microcurrent stimulates the lymph while hiding the tired in your eyes, and radio frequency maintains insane levels of elasticity when you feel depleted" ($550 with Vargas; joannavargas.com). DGA nominee Sofia Coppola is among the awards season attendees who swear by the Face Place’s signature galvanic facial, nicknamed the Hannibal Facial, to improve skin tone and firmness, tighten pores and reduce lines. ($170 and up; faceplace.com).

WHO'S THAT IN HOLLYWOOD PLASTIC SURGEONS' WAITING ROOMS?
    By Sam Reed

For less invasive procedures, right before awards season is when L.A. plastic surgeons' and beauty pros' appointment books are packed with talent. "If I were an accountant, this is tax season for me," says nurse Jamie Sherrill. For Beverly Hills moms and other locals, "cosmetic maintenance is as periodic as therapy sessions," says Christine Chiu, wife of Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Gabriel Chiu, who helps manage the business.

JANUARY "Established TV actors have procedures done during traditional pilot season, January through April, which also preps them for filming and sweeps," says Chiu.

FEBRUARY For studio execs, winter break is the ideal time for any type of procedure as they can recover outside of the office.

MARCH "Singles will have surgery in the late winter and spring to get ready for summer," says Chiu.

APRIL "As soon as Ramadan is over, that's when [Middle East clients] come to L.A. because it's just so hot there," says plastic surgeon Jason Diamond, who says he sees "hundreds" of Gulf patients from June to August. "That's a huge time for them to have their procedures."

MAY "Moms have surgeries in summer and winter breaks," says Chiu.

JUNE "International Asian clients like to escape from the heat of their home countries by visiting Beverly Hills during the summer months, especially if they have children who go to college in the U.S.," notes Chiu. "Their visit would coincide with the kids' college breaks." Dermatologist Jason Emer adds that early fall also is a common time for Asian clients seeking such procedures as skin lightening and peels after summer's tans.

JULY - SEPTEMBER Actors wait until March for extensive procedures, when awards-season red carpets are over, and they can prep for L.A.'s other favorite season — bikini season.

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER "Right after Thanksgiving is really busy" for talent, says Sherrill, who specializes in fillers and Botox. "Instead of 'Black Friday,' we call it 'Black and Bruised Friday.' "
