Martial arts fans have been revelling in the last 24 hours while possibly spotting a peculiar photo collage or two online as of late featuring action stars Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa and Tiger Chen. Well, for those wondering and still stuck in mystery, you'll find that update via exclusive over at Film Combat Syndicate of the new 'Asian Expendables' themed thriller, Makeshift Sqaud, which is aiming to film early next year.

The cast, is so far joined by actress Angelababy with Gary Mak (a.k.a. Alan Mak), whose credits include assistant directing films like The Grandmaster (2013) and Bodyguards And Assassins (2009), in the director's chair with locations tentatively set for China and Malaysia. Most other details and plot information are still pending and under wraps as the news has only broken this week, but comes amidst the electricity circulating over the prospects of all three male leads.

Jaa, co-star of xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage opening in January, is currently set to star in the Asia-set action thriller, High Value Target with action star Jason Statham for hopeful director Rob Cohen, while Yuen Woo-Ping protégé, Chen, stars in Zhang Xianfeng's Kung Fu Cyborg later this year. Uwais, who himself will also be plenty busy through next year, is lighting up the Midnight Madness section at TIFF this week with Mo Bros' actioner, Headshot.

The Asian action stars will topline the new film with 'John Wick' director Chad Stahelski coordinating the action design.
Three of Asia's hottest action stars, Tony Jaa (Ong Bak), Tiger Chen (Man of Taichi) and Iko Uwais (The Raid), are teaming up for Triple Threat, with John Wick director Chad Stahelski coordinating the action design.

Arclight Films has boarded world sales on the project and is introducing it to buyers for the first time at AFM.

Dwayne Smith wrote the screenplay for the film, which revolves around a Chinese martial artist who goes to Mexico to rescue his ex-wife and their son after they are kidnapped by a drug cartel. Wang Xiaolie will co-direct the movie.

Triple Threat is being produced by Kungfuman Culture Media and Hamilton Entertainment. Ying Ye, managing director of Arclight's Asian cinema division Easternlight, is producing alongside Chen Sylen Hwa, Sheldon Pang, He Shi and Gary Hamilton.

    Triple Threat Part Deux

New production, same title, same three, plus more.

    But minus Angelababy.

The trio were to have starred in a different film, also titled 'Triple Threat,' but that fell apart last year.
Talk about an action-star sextuple bill.

Ong Bak star Tony Jaa, The Raid breakout Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen (Man of Tai Chi) will square off against Scott Adkins (Zero Dark Thirty), UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping and action movie vet Michael Jai White in Triple Threat.

Jesse Johnson is directing the feature, which hails from Arclight Films. Mike Selby of SC Films International and Arclight’s Mike Gabrawy and Gary Hamilton are producing. Chen also is producing, as are Elliot Tong and Ying Ye.

The action kicks off after a billionaire's daughter becomes the target of a mercenary cartel. Her only protection are two down-on-their-luck fighters and a third who has vowed revenge against the others.

Asian actors Jaa, Uwais and Chen are the protagonists, while American thespians Adkins, Bisping and White are the villains. Joey O’Bryan wrote the script.

The project was coming together last year but fell apart. It was reconstituted with a new director, script and setting (Mexico was on the books for the previous version), as well as a new set of bad guys. Also new is the financier: Shanghai Aurora Alliance is now bankrolling the film.

“I cannot tell you how excited I am about this film, it is unique,” Jaa said Tuesday in a statement. “I don’t think that anyone has seen a cast like this in a generation.”

Gersh, which reps all the actors in its action department, packaged the film, which is eyeing an April production start in Bangkok.

Adkins was last seen fighting Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's Doctor Strange, while Bisping appeared in xXx: Return of Xander Cage and will be seen in an upcoming episode of Twin Peaks. White starred in 1997's Spawn and appeared in The Dark Knight. He also played the Bronze Tiger on The CW’s Arrow.

In addition to being repped by Gersh, Jaa is repped by Mike Selby Management, Link Entertainment and Bloom Hergott while Uwais is also with Management 360 and Ricky Siahaan Management. Adkins is additionally repped by Joe Hutton at BWA Agency, Link Entertainment and Bloom/Hergott. Bisping is also repped by Paradigm Sports Management and Bloom/Hergott, and White is additionally repped by Link Entertainment.

    More than just three now...

When I was working on Man at Arms: Art of War, I talked to Marko Zaror about this project. He said he was approached for it as well, but it didn't fit into his schedule.

    3,2,1… Star-filled ‘Triple Threat’ begins production…
    16 Apr 2017/Mike Leeder

Triple Threat sees Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen and Iko Uwais take on Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White and Michael Bisping…

The long awaited Triple Threat has just started shooting in Thailand.

The film tells of a billionaires daughter on the run from a murderous cartel. She enlists three martial artists to protect her and seek revenge on the cartel… The three martial arts heroes are Ong Bak hero Tony Jaa – most recently seen in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage – former Yuen Woo-ping protege and star of Man of Tai Chi Tiger Chen, and Indonesian martial arts sensation Iko Uwais (star of The Raid series). Pitted against them are the diabolical trinity of Scott Adkins (Undisputed & Ninja franchise), Black Dynamite himself Michael Jai White and UFC legend Michael Bisping (Strike Back, XXX: Return of Xander Cage). Arrow‘s Celina Jade (soon to be seen in Wolf Warrior 2), Jeeja Yanin (Chocolate, Half Worlds S2) and Pitfighter‘s Dominique Vandenberg round out the cast.

Jaa – who just dropped his first single Groundbreaking which sees the Ong Bak star singing and dancing while still throwing in the occasional jumping elbow – will next be seen in Wilson Yip’s Paradox alongside Louis Koo, and has a couple of potential projects in development with Jason Statham that include High Value Target (described as Die Hard on a ship) and a new China financed Buddy Cop movie which was just announced.

Uwais just wrapped The Night Comes for Us with the Headshot team, and will soon be seen in Beyond Skyline battling aliens alongside Frank Grillo. He will be seen in Mario Kassar’s Foxtrot Six which, as we reported, looks set to be the Indonesian Expendables movie that the seemingly abandoned Garuda 7 wanted to be. Chen’s most recent project was the time jumping Kung Fu Traveler.

Adkins arrives on set fresh from the set of the sci fi thriller Incoming. Of his two previous projects with Johnson… the Vietnam set Savage Dog is set for release and the unconventional superhero thriller Accident Man is currently in post-production. Michael Jai White will soon be seen alongside Adkins in Accident Man, Bisping will be seen in the Twin Peaks series and the upcoming Den of Thieves.

The film is being produced by SC Films International, Arclight Films and Shanghai Aurora Alliance with Mike Selby, Mike Gabrawy, Gary Hamilton, Elliot Tong, Ying Ye and Chen serving as producers. The fight and action sequences are being choreographed by Eliminators and Accident Man‘s Tim Man, along with Kazu Neda and Newik Chase from Seng Stunts.

The man behind the camera, directing proceedings is Jesse V Johnson ( The Butcher, Pit Fighter) who previously shot in Thailand for The 5th Commandment. Johnson was born into the film industry working for two of his uncles, stunt legends Vic and Andy Armstrong on such projects as Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Charlies Angels and War of the Worlds. Johnson has shown he can handle the action and the drama on such projects as Charlie Valentine, The Beautiful Ones, The Package and most recently on those highly anticipated Savage Dog and Accident Manprojects. The script for the film is by Joey O’Bryan who wrote the scripts for Johnnie To’s Fulltime Killer and Soi Chean’s Motorway.

Triple Threat has taken a while to come together, with the original incarnation of the project that was announced with Chad Stehleski at the helm telling a very different story that would have taken place in Mexico. But for various reasons that version of the film wasn’t to be, and has evolved into a very different project. But we’re very excited about a production that still brings together a very impressive team both in-front and behind the camera…

    Well Go USA

Well Go USA Gets In On Action With ‘Triple Threat’ Deal
    by Patrick Hipes
    July 19, 2017 12:10pm

    Arclight Films

EXCLUSIVE: Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Triple Threat, the Arclight Films action thriller that teams a slew of big-name international action stars including Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, Scott Adkins and Michael Bisping. The deal will see the film aim for a U.S theatrical release in early 2018.

Directed by Jesse V. Johnson, the movie centers on a down-and-out band of mercenaries (Ong Bak‘s Jaa, The Raid‘s Uwais and Man Of Tai Chi‘s Chen) who take on a trio of assassins (Black Dynamite‘s White, The Expendibles 2‘s Adkins and XxX: Return Of Xander Cage‘s Michael Bisping) who are hired to take out a billionaire’s daughter intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate. JeeJa Yanin, Michael Wong and Celina Jade co-star. A sequel involving the trio of mercenaries is already in the works.

We’re also hearing some of the movie’s cast is heading to Comic-Con this week for a surprise panel appearance. While details are under wraps, we’re hearing they’ll bring footage. Here’s a tease for that:

“I don’t believe a martial arts action cast like this has ever assembled before,” Well Go president and CEO Doris Pfardrescher said. “Triple Threat brings together some of the biggest names in action today along with some of the most exciting fights scenes ever seen and we can’t be more excited to bring this film to our audience.”

The pic was produced by Shanghai Aurora Alliance and SC Films in association with Arclight Films, Beijing Manyougu Company Ltd, Kungfuman Culture Media, Liehe Pictures Culture Media, and co-presented by Yuan Jiguo, He Weijun, and Ruan Xiaohua. Ying Ye and Tiger Chan are producers alongside Lui Yan, He Weijun, Sylen Hwa, Michael Selby, Gary Hamilton, Mike Gabrawy and Elliot Tong.

The deal was negotiated by Pfardrescher (also an executive producer) on behalf of Well Go USA with Arclight, which is handling worldwide rights. Gersh reps the cast.
The first of the SDCC buzz.

    Should be interesting.

No disrespect to Tiger Chen, but I wish it was Donnie Yen in his spot. Which is amazing, because Donnie is 54 years old, yet still able to do fight scenes at a very high level. Then it would have truly been THE top 3 MA screen stars of their respective countries.
