“Indiana Jones 5” has officially been delayed.

Disney pushed back the film’s release a year to July 9, 2021. Variety first reported late last month that the Harrison Ford-starrer would miss its 2020 launch date. The return of the action hero has been halted following issues with the script. The studio also dated Dwayne Johnson’s “Jungle Cruise” for Oct. 11, 2019 and slated Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent 2” for May 29, 2020.

Steven Spielberg is still attached to direct the fifth installment in the “Indiana Jones” franchise, with Ford reprising his starring role. The feature is one of several franchise reboots commissioned by Disney since the studio giant purchased Lucasfilm.

Jonathan Kasdan, son of Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplay for “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” will join the project to draft a new script for the movie after original writer David Koepp left the feature to direct Blumhouse’s “You Should Have Left.”

Disney also renamed the sequel to “Wreck-It Ralph.” The animated film’s original title, “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2,” has since been simplified to “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” Meanwhile, “Mary Poppins Returns,” starring Emily Blunt, will be flying to theaters a week early. The holiday feature, which was expected to debut on Dec. 25, 2018, will now open on Dec. 19.

Also on the docket is a new, untitled Marvel movie, which is receiving a significant time bump. The superhero tentpole, originally slated for release on July 30, 2021, will now open on Feb. 12, 2021, with another untitled live-action Disney pic set to take its original time slot.

Indiana Jones fedora fetches over $500,000 at auction

The jacket worn by Harrison Ford's character Han Solo in the 'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back' film is on show Sept. 6 at the Imax in central London. LONDON – Indiana Jones’s signature fedora fetched more than half a million dollars at a blockbuster London auction of rare memorabilia from some of the most iconic movies of the past 40 years.

But the star attraction — the sleek jacket worn by the loveable Star Wars scoundrel Han Solo in “The Empire Strikes Back” — failed to clear the £500,000 ($665,000, €563,000) reserve and went unsold.

Organizers said they had “a number of post-auction inquires” about the space-traveling jacket and were hoping to strike a deal in the coming days.

More than 600 costumes and props from much-adored films and television series went under the hammer on the banks of the River Thames.

The memorabilia seller Prop Store has held the annual event since 2014 and expected to collect a record £3.5 million.

That figure might not be initially met with the jacket setback.

Organizers were hoping it would get up to a £1 million. The auction was halted with bids at £450,000 — just short of the minimum price set by the undisclosed seller.

The jacket oozes cool and appeared in the scene in which Solo dodged asteroids and shot at Darth Vader in “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

“It is a relatively simple jacket,” said Prop Store’s chief operating officer, Brandon Alinger

He said “Star Wars” creator George Lucas wanted workaday-looking clothes rather than flashy costumes that might distract attention.

“There’s some very cool stylized elements, like this triple-stitch banding on the sleeves.”

Ford’s fedora in the Indiana Jones franchise debut “Raiders of the Lost Ark” beat Prop Store’s expectation to sell for £393,600 ($522,255).

The price includes a buyer’s premium paid to the auctioneer. The hat cost £320,000 when the winning bid was placed and the hammer struck.

One of the most recognizable hats in film since Charlie Chaplin’s black bowler is signed on the inner sweatband by Ford himself.

The fedora was “sat upon, wrung repeatedly and treated with bleach and dust” ahead of filming to achieve a worn look, according to the auction catalogue.

Another hot item is the neon pink and green hoverboard ridden by actor Michael J. Fox’s character Marty McFly in the “Back to the Future” trilogy.

It was sold at the auction price of £30,000 — the lower end of what Prop Store had hoped.

Items from the “James Bond,” “The Godfather,” “Harry Potter,” “Batman,” “Aliens,” “Star Trek,” “Blade,” “Tomb Raider” and “Men in Black” series were also up for grabs.

Other classic movie items sold include the robe worn by Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden character in “Fight Club,” a Wonka bar from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and Johnny Depp’s unique costume in “Edward Scissorhands.

Prop Store acquires its wares from movie studios, crew members and other collectors around the world.

It is due to announce the amount it raised from the auction on Friday.

    Indy 5

A 77-year old Indy...well, there was drinking from the grail, right?

Indiana Jones 5 Shoots This Summer Says Harrison Ford
Indiana Jones sequel is confirmed by the title character himself, Harrison Ford and shooting starts this summer.

Archaeology professor Dr. Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones, Jr., will make one last dig into history. Academy Award-nominated actor Harrison Ford revealed Indiana Jones 5 will start production in two months, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While promoting his upcoming film, Call of the Wild on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ford told host Ellen DeGeneres that filming on the Indiana Jones sequel will begin late this summer. "It's going to be fun," Ford said. "They are great fun to make." The interview airs today.

Steven Spielberg will direct the Indiana Jones sequel from a script by Solo: A Star Wars Story writer Jonathan Kasdan. The film will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Ford will return as the classic character he created.

Ford has created iconic characters. From Rick Deckard in Blade Runner to Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise. “I’m always delighted to come back to these characters,” Ford told correspondent Lee Cowan in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning. “You know, when we have the opportunity to make another it’s because people have enjoyed them. I feel obliged to make sure that our efforts are as ambitious as they were when we started. You have a sense of responsibility to your customers."

The 77-year old actor added that he thinks “of the people that go to my movies more as customers than I do as fans. Fans feels kind of weird to me, but always has. But the fact that these people support my business and I’m responsible to them for the quality of the service that I offer, that feels better to me.”

You can watch an excerpt of that interview, which will be broadcast on February 16, here:

The Indiana Jones franchise changed action cinema. Directed by Steven Spielberg from a story by George Lucas, it is tribute to the adventure serials of the 1930s and 1940s. The adventures began in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time. It was followed by the prequel, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade was released in 1989. The three films are considered some of the greatest adventure movies ever made. But the fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, released in 2008, disappointed fans but still grossing more than $786 million worldwide to stand as the most successful entry to the franchise. The four films earned nearly $2 billion at the global box office.

Disney sold a lot of popcorn reinvigorating the Star Wars franchise, but took several hits from critics and fans, so we hope Indiana Jones 5 will be a return to form for the franchise.

    Indiana Jones 5 Release Date
The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters July 9, 2021.

    Indiana Jones 5 Plot
Very few details have been released about the plot of Indiana Jones 5, but one thing we know for sure is that it won’t be a reboot.

    Spielberg steps out

    NEWS FEBRUARY 26, 2020 10:39AM PT
Steven Spielberg Won’t Direct ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ James Mangold in Talks to Replace (EXCLUSIVE)

By ADAM B. VARY, JUSTIN KROLL and BRENT LANG

After a long development process, Steven Spielberg is handing the directing reins on “Indiana Jones 5” to another filmmaker for the first time in the franchise’s 39-year history, Variety has learned.

Sources say, while a deal hasn’t closed, “Ford v Ferrari” director James Mangold is in talks to take the job. Mangold has been put in this situation before when he took over the “Wolverine” franchise; 2017’s “Logan” was a blockbuster, grossing $619 million globally, and earning Mangold an Oscar nomination for adapted screenplay.

Spielberg will remain as a hands-on producer on “Indy 5.” According to a source close to the filmmaker, the decision to leave the director’s chair was entirely Spielberg’s, in a desire to pass along Indy’s whip to a new generation to bring their perspective to the story.

Harrison Ford, meanwhile, is still on the project. The actor recently made headlines speaking about the future of the franchise while promoting his latest film, “The Call of the Wild.” He told “CBS Sunday Morning” this month that he was “going to start doing ‘Indiana Jones’ in about two months,” and then days later told HeyUGuys that the project is still facing “scheduling issues and a few script things” and that “we’re determined to get it right before we get it made.”

When Disney first announced the new “Indiana Jones” film in 2016, with Spielberg directing and Ford starring, the studio originally slated the film to open on July 19, 2019. Then it was pushed a year to July 10, 2020, and then delayed again to July 9, 2021, when Jonathan Kasdan (son of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” scribe Lawrence Kasdan) was brought on to take a pass on the script after original screenwriter David Koepp left the project.

With a new director coming on board, the possibility that “Indy 5” will be pushed once more from its 2021 release date seems likely. Spokespeople for Spielberg and Disney declined to comment.

This was already going to be a busy year for Spielberg, who is in post-production on his new version of the classic musical “West Side Story,” which Disney will release through 20th Century Studios on Dec. 18. But the most successful director in Hollywood handing the franchise that helped define his career to another filmmaker is nonetheless a surprising development. As opposed to the other movie franchises inaugurated by Spielberg — “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park” — the filmmaker has remained in tight creative control of the “Indiana Jones” films, directing every one since “Raiders of the Lost Ark” debuted in 1981 (and earned eight Oscar nominations, including for best picture).

Still, George Lucas, who co-created Indiana Jones with Spielberg, has retired and is not expected to be officially involved with “Indy 5.” The most recent “Indy” film, 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” was a global hit, earning $790.6 million worldwide, but it also served as an example of nostalgic excitement for the return of a beloved franchise after many years away, leading to disappointment among some fans in the final product.

One thing is clear, however: Mangold has quite a big fedora to fill.
