    Godzilla: King of the Monsters

It looks like Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the sequel to the last Hollywood Godzilla, not the Toho Godzilla: Resurgence

The actress will also play a role in Legendary and Warner Bros.' burgeoning Monsterverse.

Zhang Ziyi, the international star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, has joined Legendary and Warner Bros.’ creature feature Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

But wait — that’s not all. The deal calls for the actress to join not just that movie but to figure prominently in their Monsterverse, what the studios are calling their monster-based cinematic universe.

Zhang will first appear in the sequel to 2014's Godzilla, joining Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown in the follow-up that is set several years after the events of the original pic.

Michael Dougherty is directing from a script by Dougherty and Zach Shields.

The actress will then appear in other monster installments, including Godzilla vs Kong, as her character is a key figure in the covert, creature-cataloging Monarch organization established in those films.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set to be released March 22, 2019. Godzilla vs Kong is slated to bow in 2020.

Zhang, who also appeared in Chinese-language hits Hero and House of Flying Daggers, recently wrapped production on a sci-fi thriller produced by J.J. Abrams that is connected to his Cloverfield movies.

She is repped by ICM Partners and Mosaic.

Has anyone here seen a ScreenX presentation?

'The Curse of La Llorona' is also among up to six titles to be released globally in the immersive 270-degree format from South Korea's CJ 4DPLEX.

South Korean cinema technology company CJ 4DPLEX and Warner Bros. Pictures will release up to six new films in the immersive, 270-degree ScreenX format globally this year, up from five in 2018.

Financial terms of the multipicture agreement weren't disclosed.

Under the deal, Warner Bros.' slate of ScreenX releases will include New Line Cinema's Shazam! on April 5 and The Curse of La Llorona on April 19, followed by Warner Bros.' and Legendary Pictures' Godzilla: King of the Monsters on May 31.

Three additional titles are set to be announced in the coming months, according to CJ. "This will build on the success of the globally successful ScreenX engagements of Rampage, The Meg, The Nun, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Aquaman," it said.

ScreenX is a multi-projection theater technology developed in South Korea that allows a panoramic, 270-degree movie-watching experience. It utilizes a proprietary system to expand the center screen image to the side walls, surrounding audiences with imagery and providing a sense of being inside the movie.

"Warner Bros. Pictures continues to be a strong supporter and partner of the ScreenX cinematic experience, and we are beyond excited to grow that partnership with a release of six titles from their upcoming film lineup," said JongRyul Kim, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. "We continue to expand this new technology to an ever increasing and loyal consumer fan base that will help shape the moviegoing landscape for years to come."

Thomas Molter, head of international distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, added: "As we look toward the future, we are excited to bring new experiences to audiences and continue to expand our partnerships to leverage innovative formats like ScreenX. As a company, we're always looking to create unparalleled theatrical experiences for moviegoers, and CJ 4DPLEX works with us to showcase great stories in unique new ways."

ScreenX has been expanding its international exposure, screening eight Hollywood blockbusters last year. In the past 12 months, ScreenX has seen a surge in the number of auditoriums featuring the technology around the world, with the figure growing to 195 in 62 countries, including in China to France. This marks a 30 percent increase before Cineworld Group's recently announced plans to open 100 locations across the U.S. and Europe.

CJ 4DPLEX is headquartered in Seoul with international offices in Los Angeles and Beijing. The company has created immersive film technologies for theaters worldwide that include the multisensory 4DX, ScreenX and 4DX with ScreenX. More than 610 Hollywood and local titles have been screened in 4DX. To date, more than 71,000 4DX seats operate in 613 auditoriums, spanning 62 countries.

‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Stomps Into China on May 31, With Huahua’s Backing

    By REBECCA DAVIS

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” will hit Chinese theaters on May 31, day-and-date with the U.S. The third installment of Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise is also backed by Warner Bros. and China’s Huahua Media.

In the special effects-laden extravaganza, a crypto-zoological agency faces off with Godzilla, who in turn clashes with monsters Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah, his three-headed nemesis, in a story that stars Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga. Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) plays a scientist at the agency, as does Ken Watanabe. It is directed by Michael Dougherty.

The film is the sequel to 2014’s “Godzilla,” which earned $77.6 million of its $529 million global gross in China. The next film in the series, “Godzilla vs. Kong,” is expected next March.

Huahua was the exclusive China marketing partner for Paramount’s 2014 “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which set a record with its $320 million haul in the territory. It later entered a three-year slate deal with Paramount that was officially dissolved by mutual agreement in 2017 less than a year into the pact. Under its auspices, it invested in popular Paramount titles such as “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” and “Star Trek: Beyond.”

I'm not going to even try to pretend that I understand what's happening here. It just amuses me that China is so invested in Godzilla.

China to Remake Classic Balkan Films as Part of Diplomatic Charm Offensive

    By REBECCA DAVIS

    CREDIT: COURTESY OF WARNER BROS.

China’s Huahua Media has signed on to remake two classic war films from the Balkans as part of a push to improve diplomatic ties between the Middle Kingdom and countries taking part in its “Belt and Road” global infrastructure project, Chinese reports said. The news follows Huahua’s return to the spotlight as an investor on the upcoming “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” franchise film, though the company was better-known in the past for a short-lived slate financing deal with Paramount in 2017.

The ambassadors to China from Serbia and from Bosnia and Herzegovina were present as Huahua inked a deal with the Sarajevo Film Center and a Serbian production company to remake two Serbo-Croatian-language films: 1969’s “The Bridge,” about the defense of a span against the Nazis in World War II, and 1972’s “Walter Defends Sarajevo,” helmed by the Bosnian director Hajrudin Krvavac.

“The remake is not only a tribute to the classics; it will also further promote deep cultural exchange between the three countries,” the website Sohu Film said. It cited Huahua CEO Wang Kefei as saying that the partnership “responds to the call of the state by bearing the important weight of strengthening ‘Belt and Road’ cultural exchange.”

Last week, China signed a major infrastructure deal and numerous other agreements with Serbia, the most significant of which will see cooperation between the two countries on the construction of a new metro system in Belgrade. Critics of the Belt and Road Initiative in the Balkans cite fears that such projects might create untenable debt.

China-Kazakhstan co-production “The Composer,” the first to be made from a co-production treaty to bring the mainland closer to another Belt and Road nation, was selected as the opening film for the Beijing International Film Festival last month and is set for nationwide theatrical release in China next Friday.

Godzilla — King of the Box Office? Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” launched at the international box office with a chart-topping $130 million from 75 overseas markets.

The sci-fi tentpole debuted in North America with $49 million for a worldwide start of $179 million. Directed by Michael Dougherty and starring Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown and Bradley Whitford, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” cost $200 million to produce, before accounting for marketing fees. It’s the third installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, along with 2014’s “Godzilla” and 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island.” The first two films had much stronger showings overseas.

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” had the best start in China, where it earned $70 million. In Japan, the movie bowed with $8.4 million, while Mexico collected $4.6 million.

Another new release, Paramount’s “Rocketman,” a fantasy musical based on Elton John, earned $19.2 million when it took off in 40 foreign markets. The jukebox biopic has earned $56 million worldwide, including $25 million at the domestic box office. In Australia, “Rocketman” collected $3.9 million, followed by France with $1.8 million, Germany with $1.5 million, and Brazil with $1.1 million.

Among holdovers, Disney’s “Aladdin” posted another $78 million overseas, bringing its global tally to $446 million. In less than two weeks, it has passed the lifetime grosses of “Mary Poppins Returns” ($349 million) and “Dumbo” ($349 million).

Fellow Disney release, “Avengers: Endgame,” pocketed $8.6 million for a worldwide bounty of $16.4 million this weekend. That takes the Marvel juggernaut to $2.713 billion, putting it roughly $75 million behind “Avatar’s” record $2.78 billion grosses.

Ahead of its U.S. debut, Universal and Illumination’s “The Secret Life of Pets 2” opened with $17.2 million from nine foreign markets. Top territories for the animated sequel about what canines and cats do when their owners aren’t home include Russia ($11.6 million), Ukraine ($1.3 million), Singapore ($400,000) and Malaysia ($200,000).

Other newcomers include Universal and Blumhouse’s psychological horror film “Ma,” which launched with $2.8 million from 31 international markets. Directed by Tate Taylor and starring Octavia Spencer, “Ma” bowed in the United Kingdom with $600,000, Germany with $600,000 and Mexico with $500,000. The $5 million movie opened in North America with $18.26 million, bringing its global tally to $21 million.

Thanks for the assist, Jimbo. Sadly, we were not invited to a screener, but that's just as well because I didn't really have the bandwidth last week to review it. Still cleaning up after 2019 TCEC. Maybe I'll check it out this weekend. I could use a good kaiju battle on the big screen, ya know? Besides, I'm a huge fan of King Ghidorah.
