Lucha Underground on El Rey Network

I'm a little embarrassed now that I haven't started a thread on Lucha Underground here before. Gotta take care of mi EL REY familia.

    El Rey Network

Wrestling reality show Lucha Underground, whose producers include Mark Burnett and Robert Rodriguez, will be the first U.S. TV series to be screened in the 4DX cinema format.

The El Rey Network show’s Season 3 finale will screen October 17 at a private event for media and fans in the 4DX auditorium at Regal’s L.A. Live megaplex in downtown Los Angeles, according to the network and CJ 4DPlex, the company behind the immersive 4DX technology. Since 2009, more than 450 film titles have screened in the format, which adds moving seats and effects like winds, water and lighting to enhance the theatrical experience. More than 50,000 4DX seats are in operation in 410 auditoriums across 49 countries, including nine in the U.S.

“Lucha Underground features nonstop, highflying and hard-hitting action that makes it the ideal programming to showcase the state-of-the-art 4DX technology,” said El Rey Network president and GM Daniel Tibbets. “We pride ourselves on getting viewers as close to the action as possible and now they can actually feel as if they are in the ring.”

The show introduces viewers to the aerial maneuvers, slingshot moves, dramatic masks, rapid-fire combinations and distinctive wrestling techniques of lucha libre, one of Mexico’s most popular sports. It is produced by MGM Television in association with FactoryMade and AG Studios. Exec producers are Rodriguez, who co-founded El Rey; Burnett, Eric Van Wagenen (also showrunner) and Brian Edwards of MGM; Dorian Roldán from Lucha Libre AAA; Alejandro Garcia and Antonio Cué Sánchez-Navarro; FactoryMade and El Rey Network co-founders John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa and Skip Chaisson of Kick Punch and El Rey Network.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to showcase a TV series on the big screen, bringing Lucha Underground fans into the all-sensory 4DX action,” said Brandon Choi, the COO of CJ 4DPLEX Americas.

    Sexy Star (Dulce Maria Garcia)

I thought we had a Luchador thread distinct from our MMA & WWE thread but I couldn't find one, so I just made one copying the lucha-related posts. We do have one for Lucha Underground on El Rey Network.

Former ‘Lucha Underground’ Wrestler Sexy Star to Make MMA Debut in Combate Americas (Exclusive)
Dulce Maria Garcia was first-ever woman to win Lucha Underground Championship — and then came the Rosemary arm bar

    Combate Americas

Former “Lucha Underground” wrestler Sexy Star — real name Dulce Maria Garcia — is set to make her MMA debut in Hispanic mixed martial arts league Combate Americas, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

Garcia is undefeated (5-0) in her professional boxing career, but she to this point has never competed under mixed martial arts rules. Well, she’s got a few coming up: Combate Americas has signed Garcia to an exclusive, multi-fight deal.

Garcia’s first MMA fight is on Combate’s April 12 card in her hometown of Monterrey, Mexico.

The 36-year-old Garcia is both an accomplished and controversial pro wrestler. First, the good: She was the first woman in history to win the Lucha Underground Championship, which is an inter-gender (meaning men can wrestle women) title. In addition to her squared-circle time on “Lucha Underground,” Sexy Star is a three-time Lucha Libre AAA worldwide champion.

Now, the not so great: Sexy Star upset many wrestlers and promoters in Summer 2017, when a AAA TripleMania XXV four-way women’s match turned into a bit of a street fight — at least, between two competitors. Garcia was accused by another woman who wrestles under the ring name Rosemary of intentionally trying to injure her with an arm bar submission hold.

Read more about the incident here. As you might imagine, the attention and press that match got didn’t help Sexy Star’s wrestling career.

Garcia was not under contract with AAA at the time, her attorney told us. She was doing per-appearance wrestling at the time.

Plus, Garcia left “Lucha Underground” before Season 3 because she wanted to box and pursue mixed martial arts, per her camp. The El Rey Network show/promotion wanted a two-year deal that wouldn’t allow for such flexibility, Garcia’s lawyer told us.

“Lucha Underground” is a 60-minute (extra-)scripted professional wrestling show/drama on the Robert Rodriguez-owned cable channel. It premiered back in 2014, and has since amassed 127 episodes.

    El Rey Network goes dark

El Rey Network: Robert Rodriguez Channel to End on Thursday
by Regina Avalos, December 30, 2020

El Rey Network is going dark. The channel, started by Robert Rodriguez in December 2013, is going off the air tomorrow. At its high point in March 2015, the network aired in 40 million households. Last November, that number was down to 33 million.

When Univision backed out of a partnership with the network in November of this year, that number dropped even more drastically. Earlier this month, only 13 million households still received El Rey Network, per Programming Insider.

The network aired “action genre films, beginning with From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, and reality, animation, and lifestyle programming.” Rodriguez announced that the network would come to an end earlier this month.
I'm so saddened to hear this. Working for El Rey was one of the best jobs I've ever had.

I WILL ALWAYS RIDE WITH EL REY.
