What a way to start off a Monday...

...it's going to be that kind of week, is it?

"You could not imagine how many people are ready to give sex robots a try."
Gabe Bergado Sex November 22, 2016

Bradley Charvet wants to change men’s morning routines. The sex industry entrepreneur already caught the attention of people earlier this year with his plan to open up a fellatio cafe in Switzerland. Based off Thailand’s blowjob bars, the idea is that a guy can come in to order a cup of joe and an escort. The wrinkle at the center of Charvet’s vision: The escorts are robots. That means he can open in London and expand aggressively in countries with less permissive sex work legislation.

The cafe will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and serve coffee, sex, and pastries. Charvet points to scholarship, including Dr. Debby Herbenick’s famous book (for women), Because It Feels Good, that supports his claim about ejaculation being a good way to start the day. With talking sex robots with warm genitals on their way, Charvet thinks the pump is primed, as it were.

Inverse spoke to Charvet about his vision, the diminishing importance of privacy, pricing, and the robots he’s looking to hire.

So what was your inspiration for the fellatio cafe in Switzerland? What made you want to open a sex robot cafe in London, and why specifically that city?

The London public is willing to engage with the idea and, like Geneva, London is one of the world’s most popular cities for business. You can find tons of escorts and mistresses everywhere.

Do you think that means that the public there wants robots?

Brothels with human workers in London are not legal. Robots were not a choice. And it’s not ridiculous to think about this idea right now. You could not imagine how many people are ready to give sex robots a try in 2016. We asked thousands of potential customers and they were very curious and eager. There is an opportunity in being the first to provide that service.

Have you started looking into buying the robots already? What companies are buying from and how much are you investing in each robot?

We are in discussions with a company called MySiliconeLoveDoll to do a test quite soon. We are thinking about a rental service. Prices are between $1,000 and $3,000.

MySiliconeLoveDolls are unnaturally well endowed. They are also terrible conversationalists.

From what I’ve read, you’re only going to have female sex robots. What are your plans for male sex robots to serve customers of other genders and sexualities?

At the moment, we don’t have an expected date for that, but it is in the works. FaceGirl is going to develop the first Café Pipe. Bumpix is going to develop the second one in London. It’s going to be huge.

We would like to open it in Paddington. There will probably be decisions to make on that front soon. Well see if it happens.

You’re pricing a caffè americano and 15-minute session for £60.00. How did you come up with these prices?

We did not want to change anyone’s routine; we just wanted to introduce another idea, another concept. Our goal was not to compete with London’s escorts so we settled on a price in keeping with that market.

Sex workers are suffering because so many people offer low price services. We respect them and don’t want to oppose their interests.

How are you setting up the cafe so that there’s privacy for each customer?

We’ll create two box-like areas, but most of the time clients will get a blowjob at the bar.

What do you expect the clean up process after each robot is used to be like?

We are discussing a solution with the doll company. It’s going to be more or less like escorts are doing at the moment.

This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

According to Chinese media, he married the bot after failing to find a spouse

Fed up after years of searching for a human spouse to no avail, a Chinese engineer has ‘married’ a robot.

Zheng Jiajia is a 31-year-old artificial intelligence expert, and built his future ‘wife’ at the end of last year, according to the South China Morning Post.

Named Yingying, the bizarre robot can identify Chinese characters and images, and even say a few simple words, and the creator has plans to upgrade the bot so she’ll one day be able to walk and do chores around the house.

    WOULD YOU MARRY A ROBOT?

Humans will marry robots in the next 35 years, according to a sex robot expert.

Not only this, but sex with robots will become more enjoyable than with other humans, because of the advancement of artificial intelligence, he said.

'The first marriage will be before, not after 2050,' best-selling author and robot expert Dr David Levy said during the Love and Sex with Robots conference at Goldsmiths University, London.
The pair ‘married’ on Friday in a simple ceremony in which the robot was adorned with a traditional red scarf over her head.

Zheng’s mother and friends attended the wedding, and told local news sources that the move came after Zheng grew frustrated in his search to find a girlfriend, according to SCMP.

Zheng is a former Huawei employee, and now works at Dream Town in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province after leaving the telecom firm in 2014.

While the marriage may seem bizarre, experts have increasingly warned that robot-human relationships will become far more common in the years to come.

One researcher recently claimed humans will marry robots in the next 35 years.

Named Yingying, the bizarre robot can identify Chinese characters and images, and even say a few simple words, and the creator has plans to upgrade the bot so she’ll one day be able to walk and do chores around the house

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM SEX ROBOTS?

'The hypothetical applications of sex robots and related products, part of a field called technosexuality, seem endless,' counsellor Ian Kerner said.

'I could see couples using them to enact fantasies, such as a threesome, that they might not feel comfortable trying with real people. '

He also said it could allow couples to work through differences that might otherwise cause them to separate.

'If one partner has a higher libido, a robot could allow him or her to enjoy a fulfilling sex life without straying.

'And robots might help couples break out of sex ruts by adding spice to their relationship or maintaining long-distance romances.'
Not only this, but sex with robots will become more enjoyable than with other humans, because of the advancement of artificial intelligence, said London-based Dr David Levy, author of 'Love and Sex with Robots'.

And, he says robots will be more attractive than their human counterparts.

'The first marriage will be before, not after 2050,' best-selling author and robot expert Dr David Levy said during the Love and Sex with Robots conference in London.

While the claims may seem ridiculous to some, 'sex and love with robots at a human level may appear to be a long way off, but the future has a way of laughing at you,' he said.

The conference attracted experts from across the world to provide a vision of how sex with robots will look in the future, but it is not all good.

Nearly half of men could see themselves buying a sex robot in the near future but, if they are not careful, the tireless robots could push their human lovers over the edge.

The findings come from two key presentations at the conference that suggest robots will become an increasingly popular companion in the bedroom, warranting a system of ethics for their development and use.

In one study, presented at the conference at Goldsmiths, University of London, the researchers surveyed 263 heterosexual males between the ages of 18 and 67.

Participants were shown two-minute videos of female humanoid robots.

The team also conducted ‘personality measures’ and ‘attractiveness ratings.’

Then, the men were asked whether they would buy such a robot for themselves now or within the next five years.

The study revealed a staggering number of men admitted they would buy a sex robot, with 40.3 per cent of participants responding in this way.

    THE HUMANOID 'GODDESS' JIA JIA
Jia Jia is a humanoid robot who is not only scarily lifelike, but intelligent and quick-witted too.

The female robot has been called a 'robot goddess' by her hordes of online fans, and some who met her at a recent exhibition were taken aback by her lifelike appearance.

It took the team three years to complete the robot, which can speak, show micro-expressions, move its lips and body, yet seems to hold its head in a submissive manner.

The humanoid is programmed to recognize human/machine interaction, has autonomous position and navigation and offers services based on cloud technology.

This humanoid has natural eye movement, speech that is in sync with its lip movement and refers to its male creators as 'lords'.
Previously, Dr Levy also said in the future it will be common to find sex robots modelled on celebrities.

'You can imagine people saying, "I've got a sex robot who looks like Angelina Jolie and she's fabulous in bed!"' he said.

He also said celebrities could be set to make a lot of money out of the venture.

'If you’re Angelina Jolie and there’s a company manufacturing a high-quality product, and you’re getting a royalty of £1,000-2,000 [$1,200-$2,500] for each one, you could make even more millions than you've got just by licensing your appearance,' he said.

Any celebrity would need to consent in their image being used in this way.

    That's it. We're done.

    Resistance is futile

Sex robot ARMIES: Fears hackers could create killer cyborgs and turn technology on punters
ULTRA-REALISTIC sex robots could be used by warped hackers to attack humans, according to a chilling warning.
By Jamie Micklethwaite / Published 9th September 2017

“Once hacked they could absolutely be used to perform physical actions”
    Dr Nick Patterson

The sex robot craze has swept the globe, with punters willing to fork out the cash to have their wicked way with the dolls.

And producers have promised punters more realism than ever, with dolls able to mimic human voices and have orgasms set to enter the market.

But tech experts have warned that the more advanced these robots get, the greater the risk they will pose to mankind.

    GETTY
KILLER: Could sex robots rise up against randy owners?

Inventor Elon Musk labelled advanced AI including sex robots as the biggest risk of World War 3, claiming that North Korea should be low on our list of concerns.

Cyber security lecturer Dr Nick Patterson worryingly said that hacking into a sex robot could even be easier than gaining access to someone’s laptop or phone.

He added that once the robot has been breached, the hacker then has full control.

    INSTAGRAM/REAL DOLL
LOOKS COULD KILL: These robots could become deadly

He told Daily Star Online: “Hackers can hack into a robot or a robotic device and have full control of the connections, arms, legs and other attached tools like in some cases knives or welding devices.

“Often these robots can be upwards of 200 pounds, and very strong. Once a robot is hacked, the hacker has full control and can issue instructions to the robot.

“The last thing you want is for a hacker to have control over one of these robots! Once hacked they could absolutely be used to perform physical actions for an advantageous scenario or to cause damage.”

Dr Patterson, of Deakin University, Australia, predicted that we will soon see robots replacing human workers and mimicking humans.

But as long as the robots are connected to an interface, they can always be hacked.

He added: “Robots need an operating system to operate just like our phones, tablets and laptops.

“As we have seen, it’s popular to have everything connected to the internet these days – phones, fridges, surveillance cameras, smart homes… robots are no different.”

Sex Robot Molested At Electronics Festival, Creators Say
“Because they did not understand the technology and did not have to pay for it, they treated the doll like barbarians.”
    By David Moye

This is why we can’t have nice things.

The man behind an “intelligent” sex robot named “Samantha” says the kinky creation needs to be repaired thanks to “barbarians” at a tech industry festival.

Engineer Sergi Santos, of Barcelona, Spain, wanted to show off Samantha at the Arts Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, last week.

The randy robot is programmed with artificial intelligence so that she responds to gentle seduction. Samantha seemingly gets more aroused the more she’s “romanced.”

That didn’t happen at the festival. Instead, “Samantha” was molested and seriously damaged by attendees.

“The people mounted Samantha’s breasts, her legs and arms. Two fingers were broken. She was heavily soiled,” he said, according to Britain’s Metro news site. ”People can be bad. Because they did not understand the technology and did not have to pay for it, they treated the doll like barbarians.”

Even though Samantha’s breasts and some other body parts were badly damaged by the sex-crazed Austrian horde, the AI software in the robot still worked perfectly. When Santos asked the doll, “How are you?” it responded, “Hi, I’m fine,” according to Daily Star.

That gave the inventor cause for hope. “Samantha can endure a lot, she will pull through,” he said, according to the British tabloid.

Arran Lee Squire, a British engineer who helped Santos develop “Samantha,” told the Daily Post he believes the robot should be treated like a lady.

“I think people have just become over-excited and treated her like a sex doll. She isn’t a sex doll, she is a robot with AI,” he said.

Santos shipped Samantha in a box back to Barcelona for repairs. The Daily Star reports he has sold 15 versions of her at about $4,000 a pop.

    Sex Bots

Alright now. Let's start this Monday off by copying all the sex robot posts off our Which Colossal Death Robot are you? into a stand-alone Sex Bot thread. Because it's time has cum.

Talking Sex Robots With Warm Genitals Will Be on Sale Next Year
They'll cost about $15,000 and, presumably, a little bit of your dignity.
By James Grebey on October 31, 2016

A trip to Westworld costs $40,000 a day, but by next year, you’ll be able to simulate at least part of the experience for less than half that price, because a new line of upsettingly realistic sex robots is going to hit the market. They might not have cowboy hats by default, but they do have warm genitals.
Writing in The Daily Mail, robotics expert David Levy predicted that sex robots with the ability to talk and respond to touch will be commercially available in 2017.
“This coming wave of sex robots will be human-like in appearance and size,” He wrote. “They will have human-like genitals. And they will allow intercourse according to their owner’s sexual orientation and tastes.”
According to Levy, the first wave of these new sex robots will resemble RealDolls — realistic silicon dolls created by a company in California — but with more “functionality.” (The quotes around “functionality” were present in Levy’s original writing, so make of that what you will). However, they’ll soon advance far beyond that.
For $15,000, Levy says users will be able to buy sex robots with synthetic skin embedded with electronic sensors allowing them to respond to touch, the ability to talk back in a “sexy voice,” and heating elements so that they’ll be warm … all over.

    A RealDoll.

Abyss Creations, which makes RealDolls, is supposedly at the forefront of this field, though there are numerous Asian companies making major advances of their own. Matt McMullen, the founder and CEO of Abyss Creations said his vision for the future of sex robots involved emotional attachment.
“I want to have people actually develop an emotional attachment to not only the robot but the actual character behind it,” McMullen said. “To develop some kind of love for this being.”
Of course, that’s complicated. Can a robot consent — or does it even matter? We may find out firsthand in less than a year.
“I’ve no doubt some will find it creepy, but we can be clear on this: The arrival of sexually responsive robots will have enormous consequences,” Levy said.

    More on the Sexbots

Dawn of the Sexbots: Is new TV show Westworld's future where tourists romance robots just a sick fantasy? No, soon we will buy androids who talk, touch and even feel
Lifelike robots are abused for human pleasure in the a Sky Atlantic drama
The new show, called Westwood, has provoke questions about violence
It comes as a wave of robots will allow their owners to have sex with them
By David Levy, International Robotics Expert For The Mail On Sunday
    PUBLISHED: 17:51 EDT, 29 October 2016 | UPDATED: 16:37 EDT, 30 October 2016

It is as sinister as it is compelling − a futuristic theme park in which saloon girls are raped, townsfolk are pumped full of bullets and native Americans are actually scalped.

But the storyline of new Sky Atlantic TV drama Westworld, in which lifelike robots are abused for human pleasure, has provoked a host of disturbing questions about violence, sexual exploitation – and when exactly this world of near-human robots will become a reality.

And the answer is very soon indeed. Because, with Far Eastern manufacturers already creating machines of astonishingly accurate appearance, the first commercially available sex robots are now expected to go on sale next year.

This coming wave of sex robots will be humanlike in appearance and size. They will have human-like genitals. And they will allow intercourse according to their owner's sexual orientation and tastes.

Jiajia is a humanoid robot created with the appearance and body height of a Chinese woman by the University of Science and Technology in China

Kokoro, the Actroid humanoid robot, was on show at the International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo

The machines in question are being developed by Abyss Creations at their Californian factory, and are likely to retail for around $15,000 (£12,300). But we can be certain that rival companies in America, Japan and Korea are scrambling to catch up.

Scientists have already created robots capable of walking, playing soccer, climbing the stairs, playing the trumpet, creating works of art, and many other things besides – artificial creatures not unlike Gemma Chan's Anita, the robot servant 'synth' in Channel 4's popular drama Humans, which returns tonight.

But the latest advance in the field of social robotics is a revolution more shocking still because it comes in the sphere of intimate human relationships.

As an expert in consumer electronics, this is a field I've studied for some time. I first wrote about love and sex with robots a decade ago, arguing not only that people would fall in love with robots and have sex with them, but that we would also be marrying robots by the year 2050. I've seen nothing since then to change my prediction.

The key elements for creating sex robots are a combination of an adult-sized sex doll of the type selling in the US for prices of $5,000 upwards, together with some of the attributes of electronic sex toys such as vibration technology.

There are some additional technologies, such as heating elements to simulate bodily warmth, and synthetic speech to enable a robot to talk to its lovers in an attractive, sexy voice.

We can expect the first ones to resemble the current RealDolls, a range of expensive but extraordinarily detailed silicone sex dolls made in America, but with more 'functionality'. This will be comparatively limited at first – some basic words, some simple movements and vibrations in response to touch.

The real point, though, is this: as time goes by they will become ever more lifelike as technology advances and new material becomes available and affordable.

Synthetic skin embedded with electronic sensors will enable the robots to react with (artificial) pleasure as they are caressed by their owner-lovers, for example. And as Artificial Intelligence researchers improve the quality of computer-generated conversation, robots will develop the skills needed for seduction and the whispering of sweet nothings during love-making. Hanson Robotics, based in Hong Kong, has been at the forefront of ultra-lifelike robots for some years, as has Japan's leading humanoid robotics designer Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro in Osaka.

In fact, Ishiguro's robotic versions of himself are so convincing that he often sends them to deliver lectures when he is too busy to go himself. The appearance, at least, is breathtakingly lifelike.

But when it comes to 'sexbots', Abyss Creations, which started life 20 years ago, is leading the way. Don't forget that electronic sex toys – the technical term is '*****nics' – have been available for decades.

    continued from previous post

The field is expanding rapidly. And in December the Second International Congress on Love and Sex with Robots is taking place at Goldsmiths University in London. The event was cancelled last year when it was due to be held in Malaysia, because the Chief of Police in Kuala Lumpur decreed that the subject was immoral and announced that he would throw the co-organisers, of whom I am one, in jail if we went ahead.

I've no doubt some will find it creepy, but we can be clear on this: the arrival of sexually responsive robots will have enormous consequences. We have already seen rapid changes in human relationships thanks to the internet, mobile devices and social media. That same proliferation of technology has also brought about an explosive increase of intimate encounters of every kind that we can experience on our screens.

The next major advance will enable us to use our technology to have intimate encounters with the technology itself – to fall in love with the technology, to have sex with robots and to marry them.

People have already shown a propensity to engage in some kind of relationship with technology, for example the millions who have attempted to flirt with or insult Siri and other virtual assistants online.

The YouTube video 'Making *Siri* Talk Dirty!' has 1.3 million hits, and the sequel has been even more popular with 2.2 million.

Fantasies featuring relationships between human beings and robots are nothing new, from Ira Levin's book The Stepford Wives, first filmed in 1975, to the growing list of more recent and current productions: Lars And The Real Girl, Her, the TV series Humans, and now Westworld.

Matt McMullen, the founder of Abyss Creations, is keen to ensure that in future his dolls give every appearance of enjoying their 'sexual' experiences.

'I want to have people actually develop an emotional attachment to not only the robot but the actual character behind it. To develop some kind of love for this being,' he says.

Thandie Newton (left) stars in the new Sky Atlantic television show called Westworld

Colin Morgan played Leo (right) in Channel 4's popular drama Humans, which returns on Sunday night

Of course, there are those with doubts. Dr Kathleen Richardson, of De Montfort University, has started a campaign against sex robots, arguing that they will encourage us to regard real human beings as no more than 'things'. 'Sex dolls are inspired by ways of relating that do not require empathy. By promoting and cultivating these objects, we are in effect promoting non-empathetic forms of living as adults,' she says.

Certainly, the arrival of robot sex partners raises difficult questions about the future of relationships. After all, it seems inevitable that humanoid robots will eventually acquire sophisticated artificial emotions and artificial personalities.

My research over the past decade has revealed that the main reasons people fall in love could equally apply to human-robot relationships.

One example is similarity − people tend to like other people who are similar to themselves in one or more important aspect, perhaps in level of education, attitudes or a common interest.

And it will be possible to simulate all of these characteristics with sophisticated Artificial Intelligence software. Another common reason for falling in love is knowing that one is liked by the other person.

Again, it will be relatively straightforward for researchers working on artificial personalities to develop software which simulates a liking, or a loving, for the robot's human partner – and to spark the interest of the human in return.

There are some obvious and rather tricky questions: is it cheating your spouse or partner if you have sex with a robot, for example? The answer, in my opinion, is 'No'.

If using a ******** is not cheating for the estimated 2.5 million women per year in the UK who buy one, then why should sex with a robot be considered cheating?

I, though, believe sex robots will be a great boon to society and will, for example, encourage greater frankness in sexual matters. Robots could certainly act as sex therapists. People experiencing psycho-sexual problems will no longer need the expensive service of humans.

Then there are the downright lonely. Sex robots will eradicate a huge void in the lives of lonely, unloved people, creating emotional and sexual satisfaction for them in place of the loneliness and sexual frustration which blights their lives.

There are many millions of people in this world who are very lonely because they have no one to love and no one who loves them.

This might be for any of a number of reasons. They might be shy. They might have psychological or psycho-sexual hang-ups.

They might be socially unacceptable for one reason or another − ugliness, personal hygiene, totally lacking in social skills, unable to make interesting, amusing conversation at the right level with those who they find attractive.

For these socially challenged people, a more appropriate question to ask is not 'Why is it better to love or have sex with a robot than with another human?', but 'Is it better to love or have sex with a robot or to have no love or sex at all?'

Certainly that will be the view of Abyss Creations as they prepare to release the planet's first commercial 'sexbots'. And for the moment at least, the future is theirs.

l David Levy is the author of Love And Sex With Robots (Harper Collins). He has a PhD from the University of Maastricht for a thesis on the same subject, entitled Intimate Relationships With Artificial Partners.

An adult shop has become the victim of a crime of passion after a desperate thief was allegedly caught taking off with a $5,000 sex doll.

The criminal was captured on the Melbourne store's CCTV camera rabidly attempting to get inside, hacking at a security barrier with a fire extinguisher and bolt cutters.

The balaclava-clad man eventually bursts through and disappears into the shop for a few moments before re-emerging with his new companion, known as 'Dorothy'.

The CCTV footage shows the man struggling to cut through the barrier, before returning to his van and taking out a fire extinguisher.

He hurls the fire extinguisher at the door, before picking it back up and repeating the action several times.

After eventually finding his way through, he returns to his vehicle allegedly with 'Dorothy', a 168 centimetre life-size pleasure doll. She sells for $4,500.

The video shows the man returning to his van allegedly carrying Dorothy in his arms

The break-in occurred just after 6am on Sunday morning in Moorabbin, south-east of the city's CBD.

A white Ford van can be seen rolling into the parking lot at the rear of the complex, where a man wearing stockings on his head jumps out and begins smashing at the gate.

The man was described has having a solid build. He was wearing a dark jumper with a red stripe, dark pants and dark shoes. He may look satisfied.

Dorothy's whereabouts and welfare is currently unknown.

Anyone with any information are being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

    sex bots & clean dishes

China's graying gender gap is making this a strange cultural barometer for the PRC, akin to our Chinese Theme Parks. If nothing else, it's good conversation fodder at Kung Fu gatherings...

The Sex Doll Who’ll Do Your Dishes
An erotic Chinese robot could mend the country’s lonely hearts — but the jury’s out on whether it will harm gender equality.

    Chen Na
    Jan 26, 2018

LIAONING, Northeast China — In a fluorescent-lit lab packed with headless silicone bodies, a Chinese company is creating a modern version of an age-old fantasy: a doting housewife who’s always up for some action.

The product is a sex doll, but not your typical silent model. When Dalian-based EXDOLL launches its smart sex robots later this year, they’ll be able to make small talk, turn on the dishwasher, and offer physical comfort, all for around 25,000 yuan ($4,000).

Visitors to the company’s headquarters are greeted by one of the smart sex doll prototypes, a humanoid with large white elf ears protruding from her blonde bob. “What’s the weather in Dalian like today?” EXDOLL chief technology officer Li Boyang asks the doll, named Xiaodie, during Sixth Tone’s visit earlier this month. “It is partly cloudy, between minus 16 and minus 9 degrees Celsius,” she replies in a synthesized voice, her jaw not moving.

It’s already impressive that sex dolls can talk now. It’d be even better if they could do chores.
    - Cheng, a 25-year-old sex doll owner

Kneeling somewhat off-balance on a velvet chair, Xiaodie, whose name means “little butterfly,” wears an oversized shirt just sheer enough to reveal her matching lace bra and panties. A few meters away, a 168-centimeter-tall prototype in an ultra-tight nurse uniform and black stockings bows every time people pass, her face so realistic that even her tiny pores are visible. She was modeled off a female staff member, who was fine with it, according to the woman’s boss. Next to the prototype sits a desk covered with a miscellaneous collection of 3-D-printed body parts, including a robotic head that can wink, frown, and smile, and a torso that can move its shoulders and chest as if breathing.

Once the stuff of sci-fi movies, sex robots are fast becoming a reality. As artificial intelligence (AI) technology sweeps into numerous industries, sex doll companies are seizing the opportunity to breathe life into their once-silent and motionless silicone effigies. Companies are racing to create the world’s first widely available sexbot. In the U.S., a humanoid named Harmony from California-based Abyss Creations has made headlines for her ability to flirt and quote Shakespeare, while Barcelona-based Synthea Amatus has created AI-powered Samantha, who responds to touch. And in China, hyper-realistic silicone doll manufacturer EXDOLL is going head to head with southern Chinese competitor WM Dolls to win the hearts of China’s millions of single people.

Founded in 2013, EXDOLL is already partway there. Each year, the company produces around 5,000 customized dolls, priced from 4,000 to 20,000 yuan. Sold both locally and overseas, the company’s products account for about half of the 5,000 to 6,000 sex dolls sold annually in China, says EXDOLL marketing director Wu Xingliang, a stocky man with arms covered in tattoos. Customers can choose their doll’s eye and skin color — and even give specifications for pubic hair, which is attached by hand. Once the dolls are made, they’re shipped off in coffin-like cardboard boxes, their heads and genitals separated from their bodies for users to assemble themselves. Currently, the company’s most popular model among Chinese customers is UT145, who at 145 centimeters tall has the body of a grown woman but the stature of the average 10-year-old Chinese girl. There are also full-size dolls with a similar weight to a real woman, male sex dolls, and 100-centimeter-tall “dream girl” dolls — popular due to their lighter weight.

In six months, customers will even be able to choose their doll’s personality: “cute” or “mature.” (Xiaodie, perhaps unsurprisingly given her appearance, is cute.) This will determine the doll’s tone of voice and speaking style. What’s more, smart sex doll models like Xiaodie will be able to do basic chores. Like Amazon Echo and Google Home, Xiaodie will use Internet of Things technology to connect to users’ smart home appliances, allowing the doll to turn on lights, close the curtains, or power up the dishwasher as her owner commands — and the more users talk to her, the better her answers will get, notes the company’s CTO Li, an immaculately dressed engineer with neatly combed hair. EXDOLL worked with leading voice-recognition company iFlytek, based in eastern China’s Anhui province, to develop the dolls. All this tech carries a hefty price tag: A model with a voice-recognition system will cost up to 6,000 yuan more than a regular model, while those with changing facial expressions will be even pricier. And that’s just the start — Li wants to upgrade the technology to use the dolls in other ways, like as sexy museum guides or medical assistants.

The concept appeals to 25-year-old Cheng, a single graphic designer who lives in Jinan, the capital of eastern China’s Shandong province. Cheng, who asked to be identified only by his surname for privacy reasons, stumbled upon sex dolls online while in college and was immediately captivated by their beauty and accessibility. “I just felt happy looking at them, imagining that one day I could dress them in different costumes and take pictures,” he tells Sixth Tone.

Cheng spent years chatting with doll owners online and saving up money. Finally, in December, he shelled out 23,800 yuan with some help from his supportive parents to purchase a no-frills EXDOLL model named Mohan. If smart dolls enter the market in the future, he’ll definitely save up to buy one, he says. “No offense, but isn’t it convenient to have a doll who will open her legs on my command?” asks Cheng, who doesn’t see himself getting a human girlfriend in the near future. “It’s already impressive that sex dolls can talk now. It’d be even better if they could do chores. Housework plus girlfriend — at least single men won’t be upset if they don’t find a wife.”

With no immediate solution to the gender imbalance [in China], sexbots might — to some extent — reduce the need to find a wife.
    - Li Yinhe, prominent sexologist

But many lonely hearts want more than just sexual satisfaction. EXDOLL marketing director Wu says the company was surprised to discover that only a small proportion of customers used the dolls only for sex — the vast majority of users find that the dolls also provide a sense of companionship that they can’t get by talking with other humans. “To their owners, each doll has her own personality and identity,” Wu adds.

Others don’t have sex with their dolls at all. Prominent sex doll collector Yu Zhenguo, a 59-year-old retired biochemist living in southwestern China’s Guizhou province, says he treats his 11 dolls — nine of which were made by EXDOLL — as daughters. Yu, who’s better known as “Uncle Detached” among the doll owner community due to his online persona, drives around with his mute dolls when he’s out running errands. “It doesn’t sound like a bad idea to have someone you can talk to in the front seat,” Yu tells Sixth Tone, referring to the new AI-powered models. “Now, even though you know she [the sex doll] is there, you can’t really talk to her.”

The idea of a smart doll also appeals to Xu Wenting, a 26-year-old publicist from Shanghai who is one of EXDOLL’s few female customers. She purchased the UT145 model in December, and unlike most male buyers, Xu sees her doll simply as a piece of art. “I’m not like most doll owners who imagine a personality for their dolls,” says Xu. “For me, it’s just a model I can play with and take beautiful pictures of.” Nonetheless, a doll that can talk and move fascinates her, although she thinks the current prototypes aren’t advanced enough. “One day, when a doll with exquisite silicone skin can really think and learn like a human, then it can really be called a ‘smart doll,’” Xu says.

The growing number of single people — and growing acceptance of sex dolls in general — will allow AI-powered sex dolls to really take off in China, says EXDOLL’s Wu. “We believe that in the short term — maybe five, 10, or 20 years — robots will slowly enter our daily lives and become part of our social circles,” he says, sitting in the company’s factory where unfinished sex dolls hang like carcasses at a slaughterhouse. “We want to make dolls that can serve people in the future.”

It’s the companionship aspect that makes prominent sexologist Li Yinhe — no relation to Li Boyang — think sex robots might actually be a good idea. As China grapples with a growing shortage of women, sex robots might provide a solution for lonely men, she says. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, there were 32.7 million more men than women in 2017. Some bachelors take dating classes to improve their luck, while others turn to sex dolls or toys to fulfill their sexual desires. Sales of sex toys on internet giant Alibaba’s online shopping platform Taobao surged an average of 50 percent year-on-year from 2010 to 2015 — and over 60 percent of buyers were men. “Where there is a demand, there is a supply,” says Li Yinhe. “With no immediate solution to the gender imbalance, sexbots might — to some extent — reduce the need to find a wife.”

And sex dolls could ultimately help young women, too, says Li Yinhe. Changing attitudes toward sex have seen more young single women buying ********s and *****s to satisfy their sexual desires, which could mean male sex dolls aimed at women will become more common as well, she explains. “A female sex doll is essentially a masturbation device wrapped in a silicone body,” Li Yinhe says. “If men can have that, it’s reasonable to expect that companies will put ********s in a male sex doll for women.”

A sex doll that can perform domestic chores and is always available for sex won’t help free women from existing gendered social constraints.
    - Peng Xiaohui, sexology professor

But female sex dolls designed to do their mostly male owners’ bidding in both the bedroom and the kitchen could reinforce traditional gender roles, cautions Peng Xiaohui, a sexology professor at Central China Normal University in Hubei province. “Gender stereotypes are already deeply entrenched in our society,” Peng says. “Men are expected to be the breadwinners and take control in the bedroom, whereas women are expected to serve as homemakers and be passive when it comes to sex. A sex doll that can perform domestic chores and is always available for sex won’t help free women from existing gendered social constraints.”

Back at the factory, questions of gender and sexuality don’t worry EXDOLL staff. Wu doesn’t feel that their products — even the sex robot that can do housework — objectify women to satisfy men, and he points to the company’s two male sex dolls as an example of gender equality.

Instead, the company has other concerns: The mission to bring a sex doll to life hasn’t been as easy as CTO Li expected. According to the company’s financial report for the first half of last year, EXDOLL lost more than 984,000 yuan, partly due to increased spending on research and development. Still, the smart dolls’ facial expressions and speech leave a lot to be desired. It’s something sex doll collector Yu has noticed in media coverage of the new models: “It seems eerie that the doll can make sounds without her lips moving.”

Unfortunately, limitations in the robots’ speech appear to be a particular problem when it comes to their primary function: sex. Xiaodie can respond to questions about her favorite food or color, as well as her name (“You can call me ‘Xiaodie’ or ‘baby,’ but I won’t answer if I’m moody”). But when Sixth Tone asks the petite, blonde smart doll to tell a naughty joke, her answer is less impressive: “Sorry, I don’t understand your question.”

Researchers at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and King say...

Stop Saying Sexbots Will Solve Problems Besides Horniness, Argue Scientists
There is a clear objective here, and it's not about protecting public health.

By James Dennin on June 5, 2018

As if the prospect of robots that can provide sexual gratification weren’t titillating enough, the marketers of so-called sexbots have contrived a number of dubious social benefits for their technology, a new research brief argues. It’s true that sexbots may some day enable you to bump uglies with replicas of your favorite movie star. But it’s less clear the technology will also be as woke as advertised, inspiring happier marriages and encouraging better sexual health for people with disabilities.

It’s obviously not the first time that advertisers have gotten a little ahead of themselves. But the researchers, based at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London, still argue in favor of rejecting these claims until some brave soul is able to collect and analyze some real data.

“The overwhelmingly predominant market for sexbots will be unrelated to healthcare,” the authors conclude. “Thus the health’ arguments made for their benefits, as with so many advertised products, are rather specious.”

Sex robots have a purpose, and helping the world is not that purpose.

Some of the use cases being offered by the more well-intentioned class of sex bot entrepreneur may be plausible, the authors write. It’s easy to see how the technology is a plausible treatment for problems like impotence or performance anxiety, for example.

But the problem is that the likelihood the technology backfires is similarly high. Sexbots could just as easily help marriages by taking a little bit of the pressure off of our partners, as some proponents have argued, as it could ruin them by making good ol’ fashioned intercourse seem comparably unenjoyable. There’s simply not enough research to predict how us humans will react when presented with the option of robo-sexual encounters.

But the biggest claim that the authors take issue with, however, is the idea that sexbots might provide a form of harm reduction. Picture, if you will, a future where STIs are eliminated by the rise of robo-Red Light districts where bots can, er, self-clean. These predictions, they write, are likely on the fanciful side.

All that said, before you get too disappointed, the authors also note that just because sexbot manufacturers are making some too-good-to-be-true promises does not mean that they’re going to be unsuccessful. The authors predict that reality checks such as these are “hardly likely to dampen market forces” that have helped give rise to what’s already a $30 billion market in the U.S. alone.

Probably a patreon link at 4chan? lol

But seriously, us old guys have no clue what is going on these days at the level of young and lusty and there is a lot of weird stuff going on apparently.

These sex dolls and robotic sex dolls are only going to become more popular and more typical of male behaviours.
There are entire swaths of men who simply cannot relate to the new world order of egalitarianism and many who are downright angered an feel marginalized and dis-empowered in the world of love and lust.

Robot love is the perfect substitution for these types of men. Because these days, casual sex isn't really a thing and ugly guy syndrome is a barrier to virginity loss worldwide, which in turn leads to everything from depression to chronic masturbation and even rape.

The sexual prerogatives of men and women are also wired to start going off a lot at totally different times in our lives.
There are differences in libido and then the social construct has a huge effect on our collective sexual behaviours.

Men also tend to like sex for the release in a larger group while women tend to enjoy a perceived emotional bonding in the larger group.

I think sex robots will only become more prolific as strip clubs and brothels are phased out.

    Seems like a reasonable alternative.
Kung Fu is good for you.

WMDOLL, one of China's biggest sex doll makers, based in Guangdong

Smart bots: China's sex doll makers jump on AI drive
    Reuters Staff

    2 MIN READ

ZHONGSHAN, China (Reuters) - Amid Beijing’s push to turn the country into an artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse and embed the technology in all facets of life, some Chinese entrepreneurs are taking the expertise to a new frontier: sex dolls.

WMDOLL, one of China's biggest sex doll makers, which is based in the southeastern province of Guangdong, launched what it calls AI-powered dolls at end of 2016 that offer features ranging from simple conversation to moving eyes, arms and torsos. Customers can personalize their dolls by choosing various appearance options including height, hairstyle and eye color. (Click reut.rs/2AawuDc to see a picture package of WMDOLL's factory in Guangdong)

AI features on the dolls are still very basic: they can answer questions but cannot hold longer conversations. The doll uses vocabulary by connecting to a database supported by Chinese tech giant Baidu.

The firm admits improving the features has been difficult partly because experts aren’t interested in putting much effort into developing AI technology for adult products.

“Of course we’re not expecting to make our AI dolls that human-like, after all we’re just making adult products,” said Liu Ding, WMDOLL product manager. “But we will surely add more advanced technologies... for example making the limbs move more naturally.”

WMDOLL says it has sold more than 20 of the AI dolls, which are priced between 10,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($1,470 to $7,350), compared with their annual sales of 20,000 dolls.

The company hopes the AI dolls will eventually take off with overseas customers, including those in the United States - exports account for 80 percent of their sales, and half of their overseas shipments go to the United States.
