    Birds of Prey was . . .

    1. ...A pretty terrible TV show
    2. ...A comic series with several notable runs
    3. ...D.C./Warner Bros' last hope for a superhero movie folks will like?

So Christina Hodson is writing the screenplays for both a Batgirl Movie and Birds of Prey, I wonder if they will take place out of chronological order or drop the whole Killing Joke story line and cast someone else entirely as Oracle.

Gotham City Sirens originally played the "bad girl" team to Birds of Prey's "good girls" I doubt Anna Hathaway or Umma Thurman will reprise their roles . . . they should give those roles to to Zoë Kravitz and (according to rumor) Megan Fox.

    Thanks for the clarification DS

Looks like Gotham City Sirens is a separate project from Birds of Prey so I'm splitting this thread in two.

‘BIRDS OF PREY’ RUMORED FOR JANUARY PRODUCTION WITH ALL-WOMAN CREW
BY AUTUMN NOEL KELLY ON 5/14/18 AT 12:47 PM

A Birds of Prey movie has been the topic of conversation for over a year and Heroic Hollywood reports the DC movie could start production in January with a crew entirely made up of women.

Warner Bros. recruited Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) to develop the film back in April. Margot Robbie will produce under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner. The film reportedly has two scripts, both including Harley Quinn and Batgirl as main characters. Black Canary and Huntress would be two solid characters from the comic books to add to the film, as well as Poison Ivy or Catwoman. One thing’s for sure: these characters won’t be playing second-fiddle to the male heroes and villains of the DC universe.

'Birds of Prey' may go into production as soon as January.
    DC

“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film," Robbie told Collider. "She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."

Birds of Prey is only one of countless projects Warner Bros. has in development. It’s unclear where most of these are in production, but DC is currently working on The Batman, The Flash, The New Gods, Man of Steel 2, Nightwing, Cyborg, Gotham City Sirens, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Booster Gold, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad 2 and a standalone Joker origin film, separate from the shared cinematic universe.

Regarding confirmed releases, Aquaman comes to theaters Dec. 21. Shazam is set for April 5, 2019. The Wonder Woman sequel is set for Nov. 1, 2019.

Maybe Gotham City Sirens is the same.

The Margot Robbie character is stealing the spotlight

Suicide Squad‘s titular gang of misfits and criminals might have boasted a whole heap of characters, but few resonated quite like Harley Quinn. A mischievous and unabashedly brutal femme fatale, the Margot Robbie depiction of the classic comic book character quickly became an outsider icon.

Her impact was so huge that Suicide Squad 2 has been delayed in favour of focussing on an upcoming Harley Quinn-focussed spin-off of the series. It’s reportedly centred around the Birds Of Prey franchise – here’s everything we know about Harley Quinn’s star turn.

    Deadshot and Harley Quinn

    What’s it called?
While there’s no official title confirmed for the film yet (with Warner Bros remaining tight-lipped), fans are referring to the project as Birds Of Prey, in reference to the female-focussed DC Comics franchise which sees Quinn linking up with the likes of Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Katana.

Warner Bros/Time Warner Inc. are simply referring to the film as “untitled Harley Quinn girl gang movie” at present, though.

Who will appear in the film?
Reports suggest Warner Bros want to establish a host of new characters in the new team-up movie, including Batgirl, before giving them their own spin-offs. Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn, but no other cast members have been confirmed at present.

    Who is working behind-the-scenes?
The script has been written by Christina Hodson. It will be directed by Cathy Yan.

    Is there a trailer?
No trailer has yet been released for the Birds Of Prey movie– but why not refresh your memory with Harley Quinn’s introduction scene in Suicide Squad while you wait?

    Do we know the plot?
We don’t know the full plot of the Birds Of Prey movie just yet, but according to Forbes, “sources are describing the project as an all-female variation on Suicide Squad.”

As for the Birds Of Prey comic franchise, it’s set in Gotham City, and finds the titular cast of heroines battling the city’s countless villains. Usually centred around Batgirl, Oracle, Black Canary and Huntress, many others come and go, so the exact line-up for the movie version is up in the air.

    When’s it being released?
No release date has been revealed for Birds Of Prey yet.

‘Birds of Prey’ Potential Synopsis & Everything *THEY* Know About The Film (so far)

Casting rumors for Birds of Prey characters Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain and Renee Montoya have included Mission: Impossible – Fallout‘s Vanessa Kirby, Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer and Baywatch‘s Alexandra Daddario.

Discussing Film seemingly confirms the previous rumor that the Penguin was dropped as the villain of the film and offers a potential synopsis:
Multiple reports over the past few weeks have been releasing regarding DC’s ‘Birds Of Prey’ which is currently set to star Margot Robbie and be directed by Cathy Yan. However we at DiscussingFilm have a potential synopsis for the film that we are able to share as well as some details on what we know regarding the film.

The potential synopsis for the story of the film goes as follows: “After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes – Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya – come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord.”

The villain as of now is currently unknown, however we can confirm Umberto Gonzalez’s previous finding that Penguin was at one point the villain for ‘Birds of Prey’ and is no longer set to be the villain for the film, however the synopsis seems to indicate that the villain will be some sort of crime lord.

Additionally the synopsis confirms that the team that The Wrap originally reported. Besides Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, the team will consist of: Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya. Batgirl is noticeably lacking from that synopsis and despite how the character was featured in earlier drafts, they are no longer considering to have the character featured in the film (however I have heard they are actively searching to cast someone as Batgirl in the DCEU).

As for Huntress, as mentioned previously by Omega Underground, they are currently considering Alexandra Daddario to play the role of Huntress and are seemingly not interested in casting a POC actor for the role.

As for Black Canary, again as mentioned previously by Omega Underground, they currently have Jodie Comer, Blake Lively and Vanessa Kirby on their wish list to play the role of Black Canary, I’ve been told they are looking to cast someone between 20-30 years old and that Katheryn Winnick, who was previously a very popular choice to play the character in the DCEU, is not in the running to play the character in Birds of Prey.

As for Renee Montoya, as The Wrap previously reported, she will be a detective in the forsenics department at the GCPD, although there are currently no names that we are aware of that are in consideration for the role, the studio are looking to cast someone between their late 20s and early 30s.

And finally, as for Cassandra Cain, the studio are looking to cast a younger actor, someone around the age of 11-12 to play the role.

With the film set to begin production on January 15th, 2019 in Atlanta and Los Angeles, it seems we will know more information regarding the film soon, including official casting information in the coming weeks/months.

Margot Robbie's 'Birds of Prey' Gets 2020 Release Date

The Warner Bros./DC film is set to open Feb. 7, 2020.

Warner Bros.' Birds of Prey movie is set to fly into theaters in 2020.

The DC film will open Feb. 7, 2020, the studio announced Monday. Margot Robbie will reprise her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn, with Cathy Yan directing. The female-centered team-up movie will screen in Imax.

Warner Bros. has been testing actresses to star opposite Robbie as Black Canary and Huntress. A Wrinkle in Time's Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Underground's Jurnee Smolett-Bell and Hidden Figures star Janelle Monae are among those in the running to play Black Canary, sources told The Hollywood Reporter last week. For the role of Huntress, stars in contention include The Leftovers' Margaret Qualley, 10 Cloverfield Lane's Mary Elizabeth Winstead and How I Met Your Mother's Cristin Milioti. The studio is also casting for detective Renee Montoya as well as Cassandra Cain.

Birds of Prey shares a release date with Paramount's The Loud House (based on the Nickelodeon series) and Sony's Peter Rabbit 2. The James Bond 25 pic is slated to open a week later. Over the past few years, February has become a solid date for comic book movies, with 2016's Deadpool earning $132.4 million in its opening weekend and 2018's Black Panther bowing to $202 million, both shattering records.

While 2018 has been a quiet year for DC movies (the sole entry Aquaman opens Dec. 21), next year and beyond look quite eventful. The studio has a stand-alone Joker movie set to open Oct. 4, 2019, and Wonder Woman 1984 is due out Nov. 1, 2019. With Birds of Prey following just three months later, that streak of releases is akin to what fans are used to seeing from rival Marvel Studios.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead = Huntress; Jurnee Smollett-Bell = Black Canary

‘Birds Of Prey’ Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead Wins Role Of Huntress; Jurnee Smollett-Bell Is Black Canary

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros. has made their decision on the roles of Huntress and Black Canary in their next anticipated DC movie Birds of Prey, coming out on Feb. 7, 2020: Fargo and 10 Cloverfield Lane actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead has won the role of Huntress while Underground actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell will play Black Canary. They join Margot Robbie who reprises her Suicide Squad role of Harley Quinn in a Gotham that isn’t protected by Batman. The femmes will battle a crime lord who has yet to be announced.

    DC

Black Canary aka Dinah Lance is a street fighter known for her shrieking cry. Huntress has taken different forms in the DC Universe, though in the WB series Birds of Prey, she was the daughter of Batman, who disappeared after the death of her mother, Catwoman. The Huntress in this series worked with Oracle and Black Canary’s daughter as the primary crimefighters in Gotham City. In the movie, Huntress is a former mafia princess, who like Batman, saw her family killed at a young age, hence why she became a vigilante. Buzz is that Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl isn’t in the feature; she appeared in the WB early aughts series.

As Deadline previously reported, Winstead was up against Sofia Boutella, Cristin Milioti, and Margaret Qualley for the part of Huntress. For Black Canary it was between Smollett-Bell and Belle‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

The role of Rene Montoya has yet to be decided and One Day at a Time‘s Justina Machado and Vida‘s Roberta Colindrez are in the mix. Montoya is a lesbian detective on the Gotham City police force.

Winstead is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner & Klein while Smollet-Bell is repped by ICM and Management 360 and attorney Nina Shaw.

Robbie is producing, with Sue Kroll, and Bryan Unkeless of Clubhouse Pictures. Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) wrote the script. Cathy Yan is directing, which Deadline exclusively reported back in April. Yan becomes the third female filmmaker to join the DC club after Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins and Ava DuVernay (for upcoming The New Gods), and the first female Asian director ever tapped to direct a superhero film. Much like Wonder Woman which won women over as the first title female superhero to hit the big screen, Birds of Prey looks to be another tentpole poised to stoke that fanbase once again. Wonder Women set records as the biggest live-action feature from a female filmmaker grossing $821.8M at the WW box office and becoming stateside with north of $412.5M, the highest grossing movie of summer 2017.
I don't really know either actress, but then again, I don't really know either comic book character either.

    Rosie Perez

I met Rosie Perez when I did the SEP 99 cover story for Shi Yan Ming. She was one of his students and we spent some time together. I remember Yan Ming was into eating raw garlic and he got Rosie to try a clove one night when we were hanging out at his home - that was amusing. We were going to do some sort of article but it got lost in the shuffle.

‘Birds of Prey': Rosie Perez Cast as Renee Montoya in Superheroine Movie (Exclusive)
Montoya is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department
    Umberto Gonzalez | October 3, 2018 @ 5:04 PM
    Last Updated: October 3, 2018 @ 6:34 PM

Academy Award nominee Rosie Perez has been cast as Renee Montoya and will join Harley Quinn’s girl gang in the Margot Robbie film “Birds of Prey,” TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Montoya is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department. Montoya is openly gay, and during The New 52 comics she took on a costumed identity, becoming the Question. The female superhero team-up film will be released on Feb. 7, 2020. Perez joins Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead who have been cast as Black Canary and Huntress.

Robbie will reprise her “Suicide Squad” character, Harley Quinn as well as produce alongside Kroll & Co Entertainment’s Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless. The film follows the adventures of a revolving group of female heroes and villains and is based on the DC Comics characters and concepts created by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Chuck Dixon.

In addition, TheWrap has exclusively learned that the villain in “Birds of Prey” will be Black Mask, one of Batman’s foes who has never before appeared on the big screen.

Cathy Yan is set to direct. Yan is best known for writing and directing her feature debut “Dead Pigs,” which took home the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance earlier this year.

Yan would be the third female filmmaker to join the DC Universe with this film, which is still known as the Untitled Girl Gang Movie at Warner Bros. She will also be the first Asian woman to direct a DC film.

Yan was previously a reporter for the Wall Street Journal in New York, Hong Kong and Beijing and was one of the youngest writers in the paper’s history to pen multiple front-page stories. She is represented by CAA.

As TheWrap first reported, Christina Hodson wrote the “Birds of Prey” spinoff for Warner Bros. and DC Films. Hodson is also writing “Batgirl” for DC.

Perez has had a distinguished career ever since she broke out as Tina in Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.” Perez went on to play supporting roles in Ron Shelton’s “White Men Can’t Jump,” and Carla Rodrigo in Peter Weir’s “Fearless,” for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Perez recent credits include NBC’s “Rise” and she also voiced Dulce in Disney Television’s “Elena of Avalor.”

Perez will next be seen alongside Anne Hathaway in “The Last Thing He Wanted,” a political thriller directed and co-written by Dee Rees set to debut on Netflix in 2019. She’s repped by Innovative Artists, Silver Lining Entertainment, and Leslie Sloane at Vision PR.

    More from Yan

Birds of Prey director reveals what sold her on the DC team-up movie
She’ll be the first Asian woman to direct a super hero movie
    By Petrana Radulovic@Pet_rana Oct 31, 2018, 11:50am EDT

The Birds of Prey movie will bring together the women of the DC universe, both on the screen and behind the camera. Notably, Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) will direct the movie, making her the third female filmmaker attached to a DC project, after Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and Ava DuVernay (the upcoming New Gods).

Yan spoke at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit about landing this role — and about the influence she’ll be bringing to the DC Extended Universe as its first female Asian director, and the first Asian woman to ever direct a superhero movie in general.

The script, Yan says, is what drew her to the project.

“I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relatable,” she said at the panel. “So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it.”

Yan comes from an indie movie background, so pitching to a big studio was a new experience. But she wasn’t deterred.

“I have never done any of these things and I asked my agents for examples to get a better sense: I put together a pitch deck and also assembled a sizzle reel,” said Yan. “But I would say it wasn’t like a lot of other sizzle reels which reference other films that remotely feel like your film. I find those to be rather pointless. But I created my own version that thematically and tonally conveyed what you would feel (in my movie).”

As for whether she would bring her own cultural background to Birds of Prey, Yan had a mixed answer: “Yes and no. The tone of the film is similar to that in my films. There is a half-Asian character and our screenwriter (Christina Hodson) is half Chinese and she’s sneaking little bits in.”

Cassandra Cain/Batgirl in Batgirl #3, DC Comics (2000).
Cassandra Cain as Batgirl. Scott Peterson, Kelley Puckett, Damion Scott/DC Comics

If you’ve been following the movie’s production news, you’ll recognize the half-Asian character as Cassandra Cain, an ally of Barbara Gordon’s who eventually took up the mantle of Batgirl herself. She’s the daughter of assassins Lady Shiva and David Cain, who experimentally deprived his daughter of contact with any verbal language. As a result, her brain repurposed its language centers to interpret body language (look, it’s comics) making her one of the greatest fighters in the world — but nearly unable to speak.

The movie is set to follow Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as she joins forces with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollet-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to save the life of young Cassandra Cain from an evil crime lord. Yan confirmed that the movie will be rated R.

Production for Birds of Prey is set to start in January 2019, with tentative release date of Feb. 7, 2020.
I suppose I should check out one of Yan's previous films. IMDB lists Dead Pigs as the only feature of hers.

(and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Not going to update the thread title here just yet. Not sure it'd fit within our thread title character limits.

The 'Suicide Squad' Follow-Up 'Birds Of Prey' Has A Much Stranger Title Than Fans Thought
    BYDYLAN KICKHAM

DC Entertainment is going in an unexpectedly silly new direction with its dark superhero movies, at least according to the newly revealed full title of its upcoming Suicide Squad spinoff, Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie shared a first-look photo at the movie that will star her twisted character Harley Quinn, and it included a much longer and stranger title than fans had anticipated. Harley Quinn's Birds of Prey movie full title teases a whole new direction for the villainous portion of DC's movie universe.

On Tuesday, Margot Robbie posted a photo of the cover page for the script of her upcoming Birds of Prey movie on Instagram, and under the three-word title, Robbie scrawled the parenthetical subtitle "(and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)." Because it was added in pen and not actually typed up on the script page, it was not immediately clear whether this would be the official subtitle for the movie or a joke added by Robbie. But now, Warner Brothers has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the official title for the movie is indeed Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Try to say that mouthful five times fast.

Not only is the title seemingly a jokey nod to another bulkily titled avian movie — 2014's Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) — but it also offers some insight into the direction the new movie will take. Since Birds of Prey centers on Harley Quinn forming a new band of superpowered women, rather than sticking by the side of the Joker as she is most famous for doing in DC lore, we know that her big breakup with Jared Leto's Joker will be a central element in the movie. The subtitle also seems to reveal that the movie will focus much more exclusively on Harley Quinn's story, rather than being a true ensemble film.

Although the newly revealed title hints at the Joker being a main influence on the movie, Jared Leto is not yet confirmed to reprise his villainous character in the spinoff. Birds of Prey will also star Ella Jay Basco as Batgirl, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask.

Birds of Prey is the next of several movies that DC Entertainment has in the works that focus on Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. The studio is currently developing a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, as well as a Gotham City Sirens feature focused on the character of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy, and there are also plans for a standalone spinoff focused on the Joker and Harley Quinn. It is safe to say that fans will be seeing Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn an awful lot in the near future.

But we will still have to wait a while before we will see Harley Quinn return in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The upcoming movie is scheduled to come out on Feb. 7, 2020.

Los Angeles, CA - *EXCLUSIVE* - Margot Robbie gets into character in downtown Los Angeles for her role in the Suicide Squad spin-off "Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)". Margot Robbie was an incredible sight to see in L.A. on Feb. 1, when she stepped out in a colorful ensemble for her portrayal of the fictional character, Harley Quinn, during the filming of the upcoming movie, ‘Birds of Prey’.

Margot Robbie, 28, was hardly recognizable on Feb. 1 when she stepped out in full costume for her role as Harley Quinn in the upcoming film, Birds of Prey. The talented actress was in the middle of filming in Los Angeles when she showed off her colorful ensemble, which consisted of a pink crop top, striped cut-off shorts, and a multi-colored shrug full of tassels. She also wore colorful ankle boots and had some of her blonde hair colored pink and green. Fake leg tattoos topped the spunky and sexy look, leaving her incredibly transformed into the fictional character.

Margot showed off her quirky image while filming outside of a fruit market, and at one point, she held a sandwich and flashed a mischievous smile during the scenes. Margot is set to not only act in the new film, which is about a group of female super villains, but to also produce it. Cathy Yan is working as the director, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell are co-starring as Huntress and Black Canary respectively, according to Variety. The film will feature Margot’s character right after she left her love interest, the Joker.

Margot already played the role of Harley Quinn in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. Birds of Prey is a spin-off of the film, so it’s definitely leaving DC Comics fans in high-anticipation of its release, which is set for Feb. 7, 2020. Margot is also reprising her role for Suicide Squad 2, which will be released in 2021.

    BACKGRID

We’re super excited about seeing Margot’s appearance in Birds of Prey! As an actress who’s known for taking on amazing versatile roles, we’re sure this one’s no exception, and we can’t wait to find out how it all turns out!
I saw Mary Queen of Scots where Margot goes to great lengths to uglify herself. She's quite good in that. I'm a big fan of Saoirse Ronan ever since I met her too.

    Fantabulous trailer

I tried to find a leaked version of this trailer for y'all but DC is doing a fair job scrubbing them. Y'all can just serach for yourself - bit of a moving target, but I'm sure you can find it. It's just not postworthy because it gets scrubbed pretty quick.

‘Birds of Prey’ Teaser Will Only Show in Theaters

DC Comics seems to be making a pointed effort to get fans to the theater. The trailer for its forthcoming film “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” will only be shown in cinemas before “It: Chapter Two” and won’t be available online, Variety has confirmed.

However, a trailer did leak online, allowing sneaky fans to get a teaser of the highly anticipated “Suicide Squad” spinoff without leaving their home. In the leaked clip, red balloons slowly travel up the screen to eerie music before Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn dramatically slashes them with a sledgehammer. “I’m so f—ing over clowns,” she says with a smirk.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads will Roll” begins to play as Harley, Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) dive head-first into combat against their enemies. The female-led comic book movie continues to follow DC’s recent vision of having more fun, lighthearted films, like the wildly successful “Aquaman.” The unlikely band of heroes must join together to protect Cassandra Cain, played by Ella Jay Basco, from Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask, a crime lord of Gotham City. Chris Messina also stars as famous Batman villain Mr. Zsasz.

Warner Bros. followed a similar marketing strategy for Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” whose trailer made a surprise debut in theaters earlier this year. The 40-second teaser was shown before preview screenings of “Hobbs & Shaw” before hitting the web. An official trailer has yet to drop online for the movie.

Robbie first teased Harley Quinn’s new look in January with a post on her Instagram and a 19-second video that briefly showed the characters in full costume.

Fans still have awhile to wait to see “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).” The film lands on Feb. 7, 2020.
