    White Snake

White Snake is one of my favorite myths. The 1993 Green Snake with Maggie Cheung and Joey Wang is one of my favs. I wasn't as impressed by The Sorcerer and the White Snake (It's Love) (2011) but was still entertained and I was really amused by wolfen's Halloween vid post this year. I'm excited for this new version, so much so that I watched The Guardian Brothers (2016) last weekend and will review it later here.

Warner Bros. has boarded “White Snake,” a fantasy adventure story from China’s Light Chaser Animation Studios. The film is being represented in international markets by Hong Kong- and Paris-based All Rights Entertainment.

Warner is credited as a co-producer and has rights in China. The Hollywood studio is currently negotiating to take rights in other major territories. Directed by Amp Wong and Zhao Ji, the film is an adventure quest involving a snake and a snake hunter who is disguised as a human.

Light Chaser is the venture headed by Gary Wong, founder and former-CEO of Chinese video streaming site Tudou. The studio’s first feature “The Door Guardians” (aka “Little Door Gods”) was picked up by The Weinstein Company.

Its third feature, “Cats” (aka “Cats and Peachtopia”), is now doing strong sales business. The film about a kitten who dreams of adventure, had its international premiere earlier this year at the Annecy animation festival. It screens this week at the American Film Market.

“Cats” has been licensed to France’s KMBO, which is planning a 300-screen theatrical release on Dec. 12. In the U.S. the film has been licensed by Viva TV, which has a DirecTV deal and the two are planning a limited theatrical release in the first quarter of 2019. Other sales on “Cats” include deals with Italy’s Notorious Pictures, Phars Film for the Middle East and Mango for Vietnam.

Light Chaser’s second film, “Toys and Pets,” also handled by All Rights, is currently heading into theatrical release in territories including Spain, the Middle East and Turkey.

China Box Office: ‘Snake’ Steals Win as Pre-Holiday Slowdown Deepens

Chinese animation “White Snake” slithered to a weekend win, as theatrical box office in China, ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays, slipped to the lowest total of the past two years. “Snake” scored with just $9 million.

The film has now accumulated $64.5 million since its Jan. 11 release, according to data from entertainment consultancy Artisan Gateway. That makes “Snake” the biggest film to date from producer Lightchaser Animation Studios, and one of the top-performing Chinese-made animation films.

In the absence of competition from new releases, “Once Upon a Deadpool” and “Bumblebee” kept going. The expurgated version of “Deadpool 2” earned $7.3 million for a cumulative of $41.8 million, while “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” earned $5.2 million, to advance its total to $170 million and confirm its status as the biggest film released in 2019 in China. “Escape Room” added $5.2 million for a $33.9 million total. Chinese-made “The Big Shot” added $2.7 million to its total, lifting its cumulative to $56.3 million.

Nationwide, Chinese theaters earned only $32.7 million between Friday and Sunday, the quietest weekend since September 2016. Artisan Gateway points to a year-to-date total of $535 million, down 32% from the $790 million accumulated at this point last year.

Even though businesses have been on slowdown since Friday, distributors avoided putting out new releases this weekend. They preferred instead to wait for the official first day of the holidays Tuesday.

Whether that strategy was a wise one will become clear over the next week. From Tuesday, more than a dozen new films will compete for screens and viewers, ranging in genre from comedies to animation to Jackie Chan in costume targeting family audiences.

Word-of-mouth promotion, driven by social media, is hugely important in China. Last year it took viewers just two days to switch from the early favorite (“Monster Hunt 2”) to Dante Lam’s well-made patriotic actioner, “Operation Red Sea.” But the scores that can be obtained in those few days may dwarf the past weekend’s total.

Annecy: Gkids to Release China’s ‘White Snake’ in North America

Gkids has acquired North American rights to Chinese animated feature “White Snake.” The film was released in China earlier this year and this week has its international premier at the Annecy Int’l Animated Film Festival.

The company, which has handled multiple Oscar-nominated animated films, plans to release “White Snake” theatrically this autumn. It will present original Chinese and new English-language versions.

The film was produced through Beijing-based Light Chaser Animation in a co-venture with Warner Bros. Released in mainland China on Jan. 11, the film achieved a box office score of $66 million (RMB449 million), making it the 15th ranking film this year and the second highest scoring Chinese animation of 2019.

It was co-directed by Amp Wong and Zhao Ji and is conceived as a prequel to one of the most ancient and enduring stories in Chinese history. It features a young woman who has lost her memory, and who encounters mysteries and supernatural forces as she searches for her identity.

The rights deal was negotiated directly between GKids and Light Chaser. In other territories outside China, Japan and North America, international sales are handled by Hong Kong- and Paris-based All Rights Entertainment.

Gkids has released acclaimed international animation titles “The Secret of Kells,” “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya,” “When Marnie Was There” and “Mirai.” “White Snake” is the company’s first Chinese-made title.

    WHITE SNAKE
A FILM BY AMP WONG & ZHAO JI
    CHINA, 98 MIN
From Light Chaser Animation, one of China’s premiere animation studios, comes a visually stunning new take on a classic legend. One day a young woman named Blanca is saved by Xuan, a snake catcher from a nearby village. She has lost her memory, and together they go on a journey to discover her real identity, developing deeper feelings for one another along the way. But as they learn more about her past, they uncover a darker plot of supernatural forces vying for power, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Conceived as a prequel to one of the most ancient and enduring stories in Chinese history, White Snake presents a sumptuous tale of trickster demons, deadly mythical beasts, assassins, wuxia action, and the promise of eternal love.

    COMING SOON

I can't get past the previous White Snake films - they all had this underlying eroticism. In The Sorcerer and the White Snake (It's Love) and Green Snake, the snake demons were smokin hawt.

    First forum review

    Wow. Just wow.

Some of the most stunning animation I've seen in a while. Everything about it worked for me, the vision, the yaoguai world, the storytelling, the snakes Blanca and Verte, the villains, the dopey human Xuan and even the dog Doudou. But most of all was the animation, which was brilliantly colorful and captured a magical world with a fresh style. Chinese animation has come a long way. This is a whole new level. It's so sophisticated and robust. I must see Abominable now, which I've been meaning to check out since last year. I would jump at the chance to see this in 3D IMAX.

    Loved it.

China Box Office: Animated Film ‘Green Snake’ Worms Its Way to No. 1

    By Rebecca Davis

    "Green Snake," Light Chaser Animation
“Green Snake,” the Chinese animated sequel to the folktale adaptation “White Snake,” slithered past propaganda films to the top of the box office this weekend with a $29.7 million debut, according to Maoyan figures.

The platform currently predicts that “Green Snake” will go on to gross $77.5 million, which would make it more successful than its 2019 predecessor’s $61.6 million.

The new sequel brought in $2.6 million from Imax screens in China, which accounted for 9.1% of its total weekend sales. That makes it Imax’s highest indexing local animated title of all time in China, beating the 2019 breakout hit “Ne Zha.”

The film is the latest work from the ever-improving local animation studio Light Chaser, and once again employs a video game-like aesthetic to tell the constantly reprised fable dating back to the Tang dynasty. The tale recounts the story of two snakes who develop super powers after achieving immortality and become able to transform into women. They meet various trials after one of them falls happily in love with a mortal but shocks him when her snake identity is suddenly revealed.

In second place this week was the patriotic pandemic film “Chinese Doctors.” It grossed a further $17.5 million to bring its cume up to $176 million of what Maoyan projects will be a $211 million total — very likely making it the most successful of the nationalistic films celebrating the Communist Party’s 100th anniversary this month.

Local animated adventure “Agent Backhom: Kings Bear” came in third with a $4.77 million opening weekend. It was supposed to debut last February, but had its outing pushed back due to the pandemic. After over a year of build-up, it managed to shuffle in ahead of local comedy “The Day We Lit Up The Sky.” The later trailed behind with a $3.19 million second weekend.

The new Shanghai-set youth drama “Top of the City,” which sees men donning knight’s armor to fight each other at the top of the city’s highest skyscraper in order to save a sick child, rose in its debut to lesser heights with a $1.5 million debut, hitting fifth place.

It nonetheless beat the $1.18 million weekend for propaganda flick “1921.” The big-budget, star-studded spectacle has brought in only $74.6 million so far, with its appeal waning rather quickly despite receiving top billing and a massive promotional push from Chinese media. This week, the historical re-telling of the Communist party’s founding was only a smidge ahead of a local animation geared towards very young children, the name of which translates to “The Adventures of Qiao Tiger on Magic Island.” That film sprung into sixth with a $1.13 million three-day start.

The Chinese box office has struggled through the usually brisk months of June and July in the absence of either local or foreign strong films. No other movies grossed more than than $1 million this week.
Note that this is now part of the Light Chaser Universe, which also includes Nezha Reborn.
