    some news

I should mention that the The Belt and Road China Tai Chi Culture World Tour was nested in this Spring Festival Gala.

Chinese artists bring joy of Spring Festival to overseas Chinese in Silicon Valley

More than 1,000 overseas Chinese in Silicon Valley enjoyed their three-hour, laughter-filling time so much that they didn't leave their seats even after a Chinese arts troupe presented their closing performance on Saturday's Spring Festival gala.

The star-studded party, a non-profit event to celebrate China's Spring Festival for overseas Chinese in Northern California, featured many Chinese golden oldies, a fashion show of the red Cheongsam (body-hugging one-piece Chinese dresses), comic skits, Xiangsheng (aka Crosstalk Comedy), and Chinese Kung Fu.

Led by Chen Zhenglei, a key champion of the national intangible cultural heritage in China, five Tai Chi masters made a special appearance at Saturday's event as they were in San Francisco on their first stop of the China Tai Chi Culture World Tour.

They made a demonstration show of both Chen-style and Yang-style Tai Chi -- two of the five traditional family styles of the 400-year-old martial arts, which drew a round of thunderous applause for their perfect performance of the Chinese Kung Fu.

Wang Donghua, Consul General of China in San Francisco, said that Spring Festival is the most celebrated event of China, also a time for family reunions and the assemblage of friends.

"The gala tonight is a really primary time of reunion that brought together the overseas Chinese in the Bay Area, particularly from the Silicon Valley, which is a special welcome created by the Chinese arts troupe," he said.

"Culture, as a key part of the China-U.S. relations, plays an important role in enhancing mutual understanding and trust between the two countries and peoples," he said, adding that the gala is a significant step that helps to bring the two cultures closer in the new year of 2019.

Many of the yesteryear songs triggered a bout of homesickness, said Yan He, one of the organizers of Silicon Valley Root-Seeking Camp, a non-profit group dedicated to help the younger generations of the U.S. overseas Chinese explore their home country.

"The performance rekindles a familiar feeling deep in my heart, and many of the second generation of overseas Chinese, mostly born in the United States, have only a limited knowledge about China and Chinese culture," she said.

"The event like Saturday's gala can have a subtle but invisible, persistent impact on the second-generation Chinese Americans in developing a sense of identity about the Chinese background rooted in the culture of the home country of their parents," Yan explained.

Yan Zhao, a newly-elected Chinese American council member of Saratoga city in Santa Clara County of Northern California, said she has lived in the United States for more than 30 years, but that it was still exciting to watch the high-quality performance by the Chinese artists.

"Culture is the best bridge to increase understanding and communication between peoples while it decreases hostility... For both China and the United States, culture matters in their communication," she said.

    Last year's Europe tour

I was searching for info on the rest of the U.S. Tour and stumbled across this.

“The Belt and Road” China Tai Chi Culture World Tour – European Tour Has Achieved Complete Success

“The Belt and Road” China Tai Chi Culture World Tour- European Tour was launched on February 18 (Beijing time), which started from Beijing and via four countries namely Berlin (Germany), Venice (Italy), Vienna (Austria), Budapest (Hungary) within 12 days. The event attracted more than 1,000 participants from countries such as Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, the United States, Russia, Spain, Holland, the Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia and Peru. The event, with the goal of “Promote Chinese Civilization, and Spread Tai Chi Culture”, was designed to popularize the essence of Chinese traditional culture to the world, disseminate the Chinese wisdom of all-win harmony, promote the harmonious development of global culture and build a community with shared future for humanity.

“The Belt and Road” China Tai Chi Culture World Tour- European Tour was directed by the Silk Road Planning Research Center and International Wushu Federation, sponsored by Tai Chi Cloud Co., Ltd. and China Sports Futurity Investment Co., Ltd. and strongly supported by Chinese diplomatic and consular missions stationed abroad. The representative successors of national-level intangible cultural heritage Tai Chi project were invited in the activity to form a Tai Chi lecturer mission, so as to pass on the Chinese Tai Chi Culture to the Tai Chi enthusiasts in the countries along “the Belt and Road”.

The lecturer mission in European Tour of “the Belt and Road” China Tai Chi Culture World Tour included Mr. Kang Gewu, the research fellow of the National Academy of Martial Arts of China, Mr. Chen Xiaowan, the inheritor of Chen-Style Tai Chi of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Mr. Wang Zhanhai, the inheritor of Chen-Style Tai Chi project of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Mr. Yang Jun, the chairman of the International Yang-style Tai Chi Association, Ms. Tong Hongyun, the champion of National Taijiquan Championship, and Mr. Huang Xin, the excellent instructor and evaluator of the national martial arts rank system.

As China strongly advocates the development and inheritance of Chinese traditional culture and higher pursuit of spiritual civilization by people, some Chinese traditional culture has gradually been taken seriously by the public. Tai Chi as the essence of Chinese traditional culture, has now been accepted by people both at home and abroad. The data show that more than 300 million people nearly 200 countries and regions have begun to practice Tai Chi, but they lack uniform technical standards and scientific exercise methods. The rank-system Tai Chi taught in this World Tour has provided the China National Standards. The rank system is in line with the expectations of Tai Chi practitioners at home and abroad for the Chinese national standards on martial arts, which helps the Chinese martial arts standards go to the world.

    Teaching site in Vienna Station

Mr. Guo Xiaowei, the head of World Tour delegation and general manager of China Sports Futurity Investment Co., Ltd. as one of the sponsors, said that “The Belt and Road” China Tai Chi Culture World Tour- European Tour was just the beginning. They planned to take 10 years to promote the development of Tai Chi culture by the way of “going out” and “bringing in”. In addition to the activity of China Tai Chi Culture World Tour, they will organize the activity of “the Belt and Road” China Tai Chi Culture International Week jointly with the government of Longgang District in Shenzhen in the end of 2018. After that, they will carry out the follow-up activities of World Tour such as Asia and America Tour to popularize the Chinese Tai Chi culture to the whole world.

A student said in the interview, “I like Chinese culture and Tai Chi very much. I can further realize the unusual charm of Tai Chi and its function of body building in the study. We are greatly benefited from the cultural concept of interpersonal harmony, the philosophy of bearing oneself and the spirit of inclusiveness and harmony contained in Tai Chi.

“The Belt and Road” China Tai Chi Culture World Tour has added new contents and characteristics to “the Belt and Road”. It has established a community of shared interests and a community with a common future characterized by political mutual trust and economic amalgamation and contributed the Chinese wisdom by spreading the Tai Chi idea of yin and yang in interdependency, harmony in diversity, win-win cooperation and joint development. “Tai Chi should go ahead of the Belt and Road”, which will surely expand the Sino-foreign cultural exchanges and tamp the substructure of “the Belt and Road” with inclusive culture.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- A team of Chinese Tai Chi masters Friday started their tour to the United States to promote Chinese Tai Chi culture to overseas Chinese and American Kung Fu fans.

The delegation, led by Chen Zhenglei, noted Chinese Tai Chi masters and successors of the national intangible cultural heritage in China, consists of five masters representing Chen-style and Yang-style Tai Chi and former champions of Tai Chi competition both at home and abroad.

"Tai Chi is a national treasure of China that has a profound and long history, and practicing benefits both physical and mental health," Chen said at the opening ceremony launching the 12-day America tour of the China Tai Chi Culture World Tour, which aims to promote Chinese culture and Tai Chi culture outside China.

The masters from the Chinese Tai Chi team will run two days' training courses for Tai Chi fans and lovers in the United States, and teach them in person the skills and expertise of how to best practice Tai Chi.

Around 150 Tai Chi lovers, both overseas Chinese and Americans, from the Bay Area will attend the training.

San Francisco is the first stop of the team's 12-day Tai Chi Culture World Tour. The trip will also take them to two other U.S. cities of Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

    Yet more

Feature: Chinese Tai Chi tour seeks global reach, and its first stop is America
    Xinhua, February 9, 2019
    by Xinhua writer Ye Zaiqi

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Byron Hartman wants to expand the reach of Tai Chi in America and beyond. He has just completed a near-perfect demonstration of his skills learned over the years from several martial arts masters.

"Chinese Tai Chi martial art is good for everyone and the Chinese people have enjoyed it, but we want to bring this art to the world," Hartman, a biologist at Stanford University.

Hartman has practiced Tai Chi for more than 20 years.

He called himself a loyal disciple of Chinese Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei, who is currently leading a Chinese Tai Chi team on a U.S. tour that aims to bring the discipline closer to the American people.

The Chinese delegation, which officially kicked off earlier Friday a 12-day Tai Chi Culture World Tour in the Bay Area, consists of five Chinese Tai Chi masters who will personally illustrate to Tai Chi fans the secrets of Kung Fu.

"[The] event is a great opportunity for the broad family of Tai Chi art to present a sample of what is the essence of Tai Chi Kung Fu to the people in America, which is something we're very proud of," Hartman said.

Hartman said Tai Chi is beneficial to physical and mental health. "Especially when you train Tai Chi, when you slow down, when you relax, when you become soft, you can calm your mind and your body," he said.

"When you train Tai Chi Kung Fu, you develop a deeper understanding of yourself," he further explained.

"Sometime I do surgery like dissection of very fine motor skills, and you have to relax your body, so you can do very coordinated, fine movements. Tai Chi helps a lot," Hartman said.

Hartman's experience was echoed by the story of another Tai Chi practitioner, Ronald Jones, a consultant who works for FedEx Corporation, a multinational courier delivery services firm.

Jones recalled that he got hurt in a car accident in the early 1980s and damaged the nerve and muscle that caused his eye to droop down.

"It created a problem with my balance and my equilibrium," he said.

After he met a Chinese Tai Chi instructor in Ohio, Jones developed some understanding about how Tai Chi helps "qi" (air) circulation, muscle movement, and nerve connections.

Jones then began to learn Tai Chi and other Kung Fu skills with his martial art teacher.

"Actually my balance got better, my strength got better, my ability to understand the breath got better as a result," he said.

"After I started practicing Tai Chi, I was able to get rid of one of the blood pressure medications. I'm only taking one pill for the diabetes," Jones said.

Jones's case is not unusual among Tai Chi practitioners.

Grandmaster Chen said Tai Chi is a component of Chinese cultural heritage that indeed improves people's health and wellness, both physically and mentally.

"Practicing Tai Chi boosts family harmony, enhances body health and increases lifespans," Chen said.

The Tai Chi grandmaster pointed out that nearly 300 million people are practicing Tai Chi across the globe.

"Tai Chi is a national treasure of China that has a profound and long history, and practicing benefits both physical and mental health," Chen said at the opening ceremony of the U.S. tour of the China Tai Chi Culture World Tour, which aims to promote Chinese culture and Tai Chi outside China.

Around 150 Tai Chi lovers from the Bay Area will attend the training. San Francisco is the tour's first stop before it heads to Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Peter Tram, an accountant in the Bay Area, said he has long practiced Tai Chi, but Friday's event gave him a valuable opportunity to learn in person from Chinese Tai Chi masters.

"I have trained the Chen-style Tai Chi for 10 years, but this is the first time that the masters performed before my eyes," he said. Enditem
