Kingsman 3 set for 2019 with Matthew Vaughn returning to write, direct

Matthew Vaughn will get to make his Kingsman trilogy after all. The director and writer behind these spy movies, starring Taron Egerton, has been saying since the beginning that he has a plan in place for multiple films. Now Fox sets Nov. 8, 2019 as the official release date for the untitled Kingsman 3, EW has learned.

Vaughn will also make his return as writer-director for the third installment.

Kingsman: The Secret Service, released in 2014, introduced Eggsy (Egerton), a young street-smart English ruffian handpicked by agent Harry Hart (Colin Firth) to join a secret academy that would train him to become part of Kingsman, an organization filled with super suave super spies.

After saving the world from villain Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), Eggsy came back for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which brought in Julianne Moore as drug kingpin Poppy and took us inside the American branch of the Kingsman, dubbed the Statesman. Firth, Mark Strong, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and Pedro Pascal also starred.

The films are based on the Kingsman comics by Mark Millar, whose other works are being developed into a series of Netflix films, television, and comic projects.

Speaking with Empire earlier this year, Vaughn said Kingsman 3 will act as “the conclusion of the Harry Hart-Eggsy relationship.” The filmmaker also mentioned plans for a spin-off film called Kingsman: The Great Game (about the spy organization in the ’90s) and a television series.

Not I. I haven't even seen KM2 yet. I enjoyed KM1, and even committed to watching KM2 there, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Perhaps at some point, I'll split this into a KM3 thread.

Time to split Kingsman 3 into its own indie thread from Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Anyone here even see K2? I was meaning to watch it because I enjoyed the church fight in K1, but still have yet to get around to it.

On the eve of the Disney merger, Fox also relocates James Mangold's high-profile Ford v. Ferrari biopic, starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, to awards season.

Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman untitled prequel will now hit theaters Valentine's Day 2020, instead of this November.

Now, 20th Century Fox will use the Nov. 15 slot for James Mangold's Ford v. Ferrari movie, which had been set to open June 28, 2019. The new date puts the untitled film, starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, in the heart of awards season.

In a third high-profile move, Fox has set director Shawn Levy's action-comedy Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, for a July 3, 2020, release — the eve of the lucrative July Fourth corridor.

The changes come on the eve of the Disney-21st Century Fox merger.

Vaughn's Kingsman series is among the key film franchises that Disney will take over. The Kingsman prequel stars a different crew than the first two films, Kingsman: The Secret Service — which also opened over Valentine's Day weekend — and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, although the logline is being kept under wraps. The cast of the prequel includes Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode and Harris Dickinson.

Vaughn has indicated that he'll next turn his attention to a proper sequel to The Golden Circle.

Mangold's Ford v. Ferrari film centers on the team of American engineers and designers hired by Henry Ford II in his quest to beat Ferrari as the top maker of race cars. Damon will play Carroll Shelby, the eccentric engineer who designs from scratch the Ford GT 40, while Bale will portray Ken Miles, the hotshot British racer who drives it in the 1966 Le Mans race.

Free Guy revolves around a background character who realizes he’s living in a video game. With the help of an avatar, he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.

Reynolds and Levy will also produce, joining Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter as well as Adam Kolbrenner. Reynolds will produce via his Maximum Effort label, while Levy will produce via 21 Laps.

It's not yet clear when Disney will assume responsibility for distributing and marketing Fox titles.

Multiple Fox Films Getting Axed at Disney
8:22 AM PDT 4/24/2019 by Tatiana Siegel , Borys Kit

Disney studio chief Alan Horn has jettisoned a number of Fox projects from his development and preproduction slate.

After scrapping Fox 2000, Alan Horn is culling projects that were in development before the $71.3 billion deal closed: "They are looking at everything."
    Call it spring cleaning, Burbank-style.

Since Disney's $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox assets closed March 20, film studio chief Alan Horn has jettisoned a number of Fox projects from his development and preproduction slate, including the $170 million tentpole Mouse Guard, the Tom Hanks starrer News of the World (to Universal) and an adaptation of Angie Thomas' best-seller On the Come Up (to Paramount).

Also poised for curbside pickup, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, is Ted Melfi's mental-hospital-set dramedy Fruit Loops, which has Woody Harrelson starring. (The project is still officially in the Disney fold, but likely will be put into turnaround.)

Three of the four films came from Elizabeth Gabler's now-shuttered Fox 2000 division (Mouse Guard being the exception). Insiders say Disney is simply culling the enormous influx of projects. Mouse Guard, which was poised for a May start date, was said to be too expensive for a nonfranchise film.

As for why On the Come Up didn’t make the cut, a source says Thomas’ last project, The Hate U Give, lost $30 million to $40 million despite a modest $23 million budget and a marketing spend believed to be about $30 million.

Meanwhile, a number of movies greenlit in late December and early January by Fox film president Emma Watts, who made the transition to Disney, are moving forward. Those include the Matthew Vaughn-directed Kingsman prequel The Great Game, the low-budget witchcraft pic Fear Street and Steven Spielberg's West Side Story.

Likely shooting in the fall is Free Guy — a Shawn Levy-Ryan Reynolds collaboration — and Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile. One Fox film that won't be questioned is Avatar 2, which finished shooting last Thursday.

But even some of those green lights are being met with scrutiny. One source says Horn is questioning the apparent plan to have young characters smoking onscreen in West Side Story. "With Fox, we can make movies that right now I say no to. ... We always have to think about the smoking policy. The audience for a Disney movie may not know what they are going to see, but they know what they aren't going to see," the exec said in a recent interview with THR. "There are certain things we just can't include because we'll get letters."

Despite Mouse Guard now being shopped to other studios, Watts' group is not being asked to make lower-priced movies, says a source. Rather, she is being tasked with making larger all-audience PG-13 and R-rated films. Look for the domestic terrorism thriller The Ballad of Richard Jewell — about the security guard at the center of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing — to be among the first Fox green lights, possibly with Clint Eastwood directing.

"We are now just only beginning to see how all this consolidation will change how movies get greenlit and made," says a producer involved with a Fox-developed movie. "They are looking at everything."

In today’s film news roundup, “The King’s Man” and “A Kid From Coney Island” get release dates, and “Barry” star Anthony Carrigan joins “Bill & Ted Face the Music.”

    RELEASE DATE

Disney has set its Fox spy comedy prequel “The King’s Man” for release on Feb. 14, 2020.

Disney made the announcement Wednesday at its CineEurope presentation in Barcelona. Matthew Vaughn is directing again with a new cast including Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode and Harris Dickson.

The two previous films in the franchise — 2014’s “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and 2017’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” — were directed by Vaughn and grossed more than $800 million worldwide. Fox handled distribution.

Here’s Disney’s synopsis: “As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them. Discover the origins of the very first independent intelligence agency in The King’s Man…”

1091 has bought the North American distribution rights to the Stephon Marbury documentary “A Kid From Coney Island,” and plans a theatrical release for October with Slam Media.

Directed by Chike Ozah and Coodie Simmons, the film first premiered at the 2019 Tribeca film festival. Producers include Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi of Significant Productions and Jason Samuels. Marbury is an executive producer.

The film follows Marbury from his childhood in Brooklyn as the sixth of seven children in a basketball family, and on through his professional career in the NBA and China. Friends and family share their view of the kid — called Starbury — while also addressing the enormous weight and expectation placed on him to be the next New York basketball phenomenon.

Marbury’s connection to Slam Media began in 1995 when he became the magazine’s first writer of the monthly “Slam High School Diary” as a high school senior. He has appeared on the magazine’s cover five times over his career.

“Barry” star Anthony Carrigan has joined the cast of “Bill & Ted Face the Music” as the villain in the comedy.

He joins previously announced cast members Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves, William Sadler, Samara Weaving, Brigette Lundy-Paine and Scott Mescudi (“Kid Cudi”). The time-travelling buddy comedy, will be directed by Dean Parisot from a screenplay by returning franchise writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon.

“Bill & Ted Face the Music” will be produced by Scott Kroopf alongside Alex Lebovici and Steve Ponce on behalf of Hammerstone Studios. Steven Soderbergh, R. Scott Reid, John Ryan Jr., Scott Fischer and John Santilli are serving as executive producers.

The film will be financed by media entrepreneur and producer David Haring along with Patrick W. Dugan of Dugan Entertainment. Orion Pictures will release the film through United Artists Releasing on Aug. 21, 2020. Endeavor Content is handling international sales for the title.

Carrigan is repped by ICM Partners and Schlegel Entertainment.

Bumped back to Sept. 18, 2020

Disney Sets Release for Ridley Scott's 'Last Duel,' Pushes 'King's Man' Back 7 Months
    NOVEMBER 15, 2019 4:31PM by Aaron Couch

    Ridley Scott | Karwai Tang/WireImage

Matthew Vaughn's prequel will now open Sept. 18, 2020, while five mystery Marvel Studios films are now on the calendar.
Disney on Friday unveiled a slew of calendar additions and changes, which include a date for Ridley Scott's The Last Duel, five untitled Marvel Studios projects and a delay for The King's Man.

The Last Duel, from Fox, is set for a limited release on Dec. 25, 2020, and will get a wide release on Jan. 8, 2021. Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer have leading roles in the film, with Ben Affleck on board in a supporting capacity. Last Duel recounts the real-life revenge drama surrounding the last legally sanctioned duel in France and is based on Eric Jager's book.

Disney also revealed Fox's The King's Man will be hitting theaters later than expected and will now bow Sept. 18, 2020, seven months later than its previous date of Feb. 14. Mathew Vaughn is directing the Ralph Fiennes-led film, which is a prequel to his two Kingsman movies and looks at the origins of the world's first independent intelligence agency. The pic follows a collection of history's worst tyrants and criminal masterminds as they gather to plot a war to wipe out millions.

Meanwhile, Fox's Deep Water, starring Ben Affleck and based on the Patricia Highsmith novel, is set to open Nov. 13, 2020.

Disney also has set dates for five untitled Marvel movies, which are slated for Oct. 7, 2022; Feb. 17, 2023; May 5, 2023; July 28, 2023; and Nov. 3, 2023. If nothing changes, that means there will be four Marvel Studios films released in 2022 and four released in 2023, as the studio previously set May 6, 2022, for Black Panther 2 and has reserved Feb. 18, 2022, and July 29, 2022, for untitled Marvel projects.

Marvel already has an expansive slate of films and Disney+ series set from 2020 to 2022, and there are a number of projects known to be in development that do not yet have release dates that could be slotted into these mystery spots. James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Peyton Reed's Ant-Man 3 are among those projects, and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has also confirmed the studio is planning to introduce The Fantastic Four and the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds, star of the Deadpool franchise, met with the studio last month, while Marvel has tapped Mahershala Ali to play Blade in some capacity, though it's unclear if he will be getting a solo film.

Other changes Disney made to its calendar include moving the Fox animated movie Ron's Gone Wrong back three months to Feb. 26, 2021, and pushing the Fox animated graphic novel adaptation Nimona back 1o months to Jan. 14, 2022.
Shoot. Our new WINTER 2020 issue just hit newsstands with the old King's Man premiere date. Now you see why I've moved the bulk of media coverage here to the web. It's hard to cover with a quarterly.

    Another delay

The King’s Man Delayed to 2021
Originally slated for September, The King’s Man will now open in early 2021.

Yet another of the leftover 20th Century Fox productions that were developed before Disney absorbed the company is getting moved again from its release date.

The King’s Man, the prequel to 2015’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, has been removed from its fast-approaching September 18, 2020 arrival and repurposed to February 26, 2021. No huge surprise there, as marketing for the movie had been largely non-existent up until now.

This is also the third time that the film has been bumped: originally slated to open back on November 15, 2019, it was first shifted to February 14 of this year and then the September date.

According to Deadline, the Mouse House made the move to position The King’s Man for a better theatrical release that will, if the pandemic has subsided enough by early next year, be able to include major markets that remain closed to movie screenings for now, including New York and Los Angeles.

Exhibitors may not be so happy about the change, since many screens around the country are reopening and looking for new product to fill them. Disney has already moved Mulan out of theaters entirely and into a premiere berth on the Disney+ streaming service over Labor Day weekend.

If the third entry in the Kingsman series is as violent, raunchy and worthy of an R rating as the previous two, the ghost of Winston Churchill himself would not be able to get it placed on Disney’s more family-friendly streaming service. A premiere on the Disney-owned but more adult-oriented Hulu would be likelier, whether The King’s Man ultimately gets into theaters or not.

Once again directed by Matthew Vaughn, The King’s Man stars Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Bruhl, Stanley Tucci, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Djimon Hounsou. The plot is officially described this way: “As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man and his protégé must race against time to stop them.”

Notably missing from the cast this time around are Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Channing Tatum and everyone else who showed up in the first two movies.

Even if you take the pandemic and the resultant chaos out of it, the question remains: who was asking for a Kingsman prequel? It’s true that the first two films — which were based on the Mark Millar graphic novels and lightly satirize the spy genre — racked up a healthy $825 million in total worldwide box office (against a combined, rather reasonable budget of around $200 million for both), but a large part of the first two films’ success was the chemistry between Firth’s Harry Hart and Egerton’s Eggsy Unwin.

Disney, meanwhile, has two movies opening in theaters this weekend: The New Mutants, which was not screened for the press, and (via its Searchlight arthouse arm), The Personal History of David Copperfield, which was.

Marv Planning Around Seven More ‘Kingsman’ Films, Says New CEO

    By Andreas Wiseman
    International Editor
    @AndreasWiseman
    December 7, 2020 6:34am

    20th Century Fox
Marv Group CEO Zygi Kamasa has said that filmmaker Matthew Vaughn is plotting “something like seven more Kingsman films” as part of the company’s expansion plans.

“We want to grow the business and the output,” Kamasa told the Winston Baker UK Finance Summit late last week. “We have a Kingsman TV series in the works and there are two-three other franchises that are being developed alongside the Kingsman world.”

Through two movies, the Kingsman franchise has grossed $825.2M. Covid-delayed prequel The King’s Man is due to hit cinemas in February of next year for Disney. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Bruhl, Stanley Tucci, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Djimon Hounsou, the film could feasibly take the series past $1BN.

Marv last week announced its first TV series, Day 1, a ten-episode soccer-world show from Entourage creator Doug Ellin, and the company is due to start shoot next week on Taron Egerton movie Tetris, which was recently snapped up by Apple.

As we revealed, Kamasa joined Marv earlier this year after a long stint as Lionsgate’s CEO, UK and Europe. During the Winston Baker fireside talk hosted by Deadline, the distribution vet discussed the outlook for indie majors such as Lionsgate and eOne, which, like many traditional studios, have seen significant consolidation this year in the face of Covid and evolving viewing habits. Kamasa’s former UK team at Lionsgate has undergone much change.

“These companies have been going through massive change over the last nine months,” he said. “Some of those changes were coming anyway and Covid has sped them up. Jon Feltheimer and Joe Drake [Lionsgate’s CEO and Motion Picture Group CEO, respectively] will adapt and change. The larger companies are being disrupted the most. Lionsgate is well positioned, I think, even compared to some of the majors. There is a level of agility compared to the very biggest companies.”

On windowing, he said: “Covid has shown the cracks in the industry and made those cracks larger. The cinema business had to change. The rigid model the industry has had for the best part of two-three decades had to change. People want content in different ways. That doesn’t mean people won’t want to go to the cinema. But flexibility is key. You have to be flexible about who you sell content to. It’s all about making great content.”

Kamasa reiterated his belief that British independent films could be priced differently to U.S. blockbusters in a bid to stimulate their box office and help local sustainability. “The industry has to adapt to try these things. The cinemas all said no way when we looked into this when I was chair of the BFI’s UK Independent Film Commission. Has the pandemic brought that to the fore once more? I’d love to see the BFI pursuing that agenda again.”

Could distribution be something Marv gets into ultimately? “Yes, possibly at some stage,” he noted. “We’ll explore all opportunities. But nothing is planned in the near future.”
