    The Suicide Squad 2

At some point, I'll split this sequel to Suicide Squad off into its own indie thread, but not today.

James Gunn in Talks to Write ‘Suicide Squad 2’ for DC; May Also Direct (Exclusive)
Gunn was previously fired from Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise

Holy Poach, Batman: James Gunn, director of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, is in talks to write “Suicide Squad 2” for DC with an eye toward direct the next installment, three insiders exclusively told TheWrap.

Gunn will have a completely new take on the property, in which DC supervillains are recruited by the government to carry out secret missions too dirty for the likes of Superman and Batman.

The first “Suicide Squad,” which starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie, earned nearly $750 million worldwide on a $175 million budget before promotion and advertising. The film also launched Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jared Leto’s take on The Joker.

Robbie will topline “Birds of Prey,” about the most dangerous women in Gotham City.

Gunn was fired from Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise after online critics discovered years-old tweets in which he joked about rape and pedophilia. Gunn apologized and said he had grown as a person in the years since the jokes. Despite calls from many fans to reinstate him, Disney has made clear that he will not be back to direct the third “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Gunn is repped by UTA and Safran company.

Chuck Roven is producing the “Suicide Squad” sequel.

David Ayer, who directed the first movie, was never expected to return to the franchise following a harrowing battle with the studio during the edit process.

TheWrap wrote previously about the fallout between Ayer and top WB executives, who effectively locked the director out of his own editing room to deliver a lighter version of a superhero movie, while Ayer was more focused on the darkness of the bad guys.

Gavin O’Connor wrote the previous draft of the script.

    August 2021

An update with a release date.

The move is not entirely unexpected as Gunn was already writing the script for the follow-up, which Warner Bros. just slotted for an August 2021 release.

James Gunn is returning to the director’s chair.

Gunn, who was fired from helming the third installment in his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, is in negotiations to direct the second Suicide Squad film, the follow-up to the Warner Bros. 2016 hit that featured DC Comics anti-heroes as the leads.

The move is not entirely unexpected as Gunn was already writing the script for the sequel, which Warner Bros. just slotted for a August 2021 release.

The dealmaking does, however, solidify that the new Suicide Squad film will be his next directorial effort. Disney fired Gunn from his Marvel franchise in July after old tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced in which he made insensitive and controversial jokes.

The pic has the title of The Suicide Squad and is not being labeled a direct sequel but as a relaunch. The 2016 original movie featured the characters Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter prison sentences.

Sources say that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.

Charles Roven and Peter Safran will produce the feature. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are acting as executive producers.

Gunn is repped by UTA, the Safran Company and Frankfurt Kurnit.

    Idris

Time to split an indie Suicide Squad 2 thread off the Suicide Squad thread.

    Idris Elba

The move follows the exit of Smith, who led the ensemble of the 2016 movie with Margot Robbie and played assassin anti-hero Deadshot.

Idris Elba is in talks to replace Will Smith in the Suicide Squad sequel being put together by filmmaker James Gunn and Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The move follows last week's exit of Smith, who, along with Margot Robbie, led the ensemble of the 2016 movie and played assassin anti-hero Deadshot.

Sources say that Elba met with Gunn on Friday and it went so swimmingly that talks began with the studio in earnest. Elba was the first and only choice for Gunn and the studio.

Warners is extremely high on The Suicide Squad and its script, written by Gunn — so much so that the pic is barrelling forward into the casting stage after Gunn quickly turned out several drafts. Before his boarding, the project ambled for a couple of years with a revolving door of writers and directors.

Gunn is said to be using mostly DC characters who did not appear in David Ayer's 2016 film, although several are expected to return, including Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Rick Flagg, originally played by Joel Kinnaman, say sources. Another source, however, says Flagg is no longer in the follow-up.

The Suicide Squad has an Aug. 6, 2021, release date.

Elba continues to be on a hot streak and is set to host NBC's Saturday Night Live this weekend. He plays a villain in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which is slated to bow Aug. 2, and is coming off of filming Working Title and Universal’s adaptation of the Broadway mainstay Cats, in which he plays the feline Macavity.

Elba is repped by WME and Hertz Lichtenstein.

The time may be now for John Cena to join the “Suicide Squad” sequel.

Sources tell Variety that Cena is in talks to join Idris Elba and Margot Robbie in Warner Bros.’ follow-up to 2016’s “Suicide Squad.”

Robbie is returning as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney is back as Captain Boomerang. Variety first reported that the studio decided to have Elba play a brand-new character instead of taking on Deadshot, a character portrayed by Will Smith in the first film. It’s currently unknown who Cena and Elba will be playing.

    Warner Bros. had no comment.

James Gunn will write and direct the movie, which is expected to go into production this fall. The tentpole hits theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.

The original “Suicide Squad” — starring Smith, Robbie and Jared Leto — became a massive box office sensation when it hit theaters in 2016, grossing $746.8 million worldwide.

The film will mark Cena’s first comic-book role. Cena made his foray into acting after years as one of the top WWE stars. Cena’s most recent big-screen roles include Universal’s “Blockers,” alongside Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz. He followed that up with the “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” with Hailee Steinfeld.

Cena was recently tapped by fellow WWE alum Dwayne Johnson to star in “The Janson Directive” and is also on board to topline the Paramount Players comedy “Playing With Fire.”

Cena will also voice a character in Universal’s fantasy-adventure “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle,” co-starring Robert Downey Jr. and Selena Gomez.

He is repped by ICM Partners.

    Batman?

Is Batman In The Suicide Squad? James Gunn Reveals The Truth
    COREY CHICHIZOLA 1 WEEK AGO

The DC live-action universe has had a fascinating life in theaters. After some missteps with the first few installments, Warner Bros.' massive franchise seems to have found its stride with the releases of Shazam! and Aquaman. There are some exciting projects coming down the pipeline in the DCEU, one of the most highly anticipated being James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Ben Affleck's Batman was in David Ayer's first Suicide Squad, so should we expect the Bats in James Gunn's upcoming reboot/sequel?

James Gunn signed on to helm The Suicide Squad in the months between his firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and his eventual reinstatement by Disney. Gunn has since returned to the public eye, once again using social media to directly communicate with moviegoers. He was recently asked (repeatedly) if Batman would be in The Suicide Squad, and Gunn addressed the concern on his Instagram story, saying:

You can check out Batman in The Batman June 2021. The Suicide Squad will feature mostly, you know, The Suicide Squad.

Touche, Mr. Gunn. While Ben Affleck's Batman had a few brief cameos in the first Suicide Squad, it doesn't look like the Guardians director is going to go the same route with his take on the titular team of villains. Instead, he'll put the focus on the team itself. Although exactly which characters make up the squad remains a mystery for the time being.

James Gunn's Instagram Story highlights how the director/writer/producer plans to put his own spin on the DC villains with The Suicide Squad. Despite having a connection to David Ayer's 2016 blockbuster, Gunn isn't the type of filmmaker to simply follow the leader. He's got a unique perspective, one that has served the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise well.

Suicide Squad featured Batfleck in a small role, mostly revealing how certain villains were apprehended and sent to Belle Reve. He also had a quick scene with Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, although Affleck's departure likely indicates that plot line will never come to fruition.

Alas, it seems Gotham's protector won't pop up in The Suicide Squad. Although aside from that fact and a few cast members, the contents of James Gunn's DC debut remain a complete mystery to the public.

The Suicide Squad might not feature Batman, but there will be plenty of familiar faces in the long developing project. Margot Robbie will be back for her third appearance as Harley Quinn, joined by Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller). New faces include Idris Elba, John Cena, and Storm Reid.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is currently set to arrive in theaters on August 6th, 2021. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

    Simu Liu tweets

Simu has a pretty good handle on social media. That'll serve him well.

Marvel's Shang-Chi Star Praises Birds of Prey but Blames Suicide Squad for Creating a Nightmare for Him

By MEGAN PETERS - February 11, 2020 03:22 pm EST

Simu Liu has had a busy six months. Last summer, the world learned the actor was cast to bring Shang-Chi to life at San Diego Comic-Con, and he has been riding a high ever since. However, that doesn't mean Liu has to forget about superheroes outside of Marvel. In fact, it turns out the star has a thing for Birds of Prey, but he isn't so generous towards Suicide Squad.

Recently, Liu took to Twitter to share his thoughts on Birds of Prey. The DC Film went live over the weekend, and it earned rave reviews from fans. And as you maybe guessed, Liu is a big fan of the movie.

"Watch Birds of Prey - it's a great film w/ strong comedy, great action and incredible performances - PLUS features kick-ass female heroes," the actor shared.

Also unlike Suicide Squad they DIDN'T block off my condo entrance to film for a week, making my commute a living nightmare... #StillSalty

Before logging off, Liu did have to make mention of another DC film. A few years back, Warner Bros. was all about Suicide Squad, but it turns out the film had a personal hardship on Liu despite him not being involved with the much-debated movie.

"Also unlike Suicide Squad they DIDN'T block off my condo entrance to film for a week, making my commute a living nightmare...," the actor wrote before adding a salty hashtag.

Clearly, there are still some hard feelings between Liu and Suicide Squad. While the film was a financial success, it was greeted with criticism from fans. These days, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is giving his spin on the franchise with a film. He is currently working on The Suicide Squad which has been described as a reboot sequel to the original film, so here's to hoping Liu has better luck with this film than the first!
