    John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick Director Teases Chapter 4 Is Already in the Works
    By CHARLIE RIDGELY - May 15, 2019 12:47 pm

The third installment in the ever-popular John Wick franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, is set to hit theaters in just a couple of days. Some may think that the completion of a trilogy marks the end of the Keanu Reeves series, but it looks as though that might not be the case. Reeves has been open about his willingness to come back for more movies, and appears those words haven't fallen on deaf ears. Director Chad Stahelski is already hinting that a fourth installment is already in the works.

Ahead of the release of Parabellum this week, Stahelski took part in an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A on Reddit. Early on, Stahelski said that the possibility of John Wick 4 was up to the fans, as so much hinges on the box office success of the films. However, he changed his tune a bit later, when asked which of the John Wick films was most difficult to make.

His answer was pretty surprising, giving that he admitted Chapter 4 would be the hardest, and there has yet to be an official mention of Chapter 4 from the studio.

"1 was difficult because we didn’t understand what we wanted to do, quite," the director began. "Number 2, we had to map up a whole world we didn’t think of before. 3, how do we expand and get the audience something creative, not just bigger and cooler. Number 4, I’m certain, will be more difficult.”

No one has confirmed a fourth John Wick movie, but the fact that it's being talked about behind the scenes shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The entire franchise has been beloved by both critics and fans since it launched in 2014. It also continues to flourish at the box office, especially compared to how little they cost to produce.

How long do you think the John Wick franchise can continue? Are you looking forward to seeing Parabellum this weekend? Let us know in the comments!

'John Wick 4' Sets 2021 Release Date

'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum'

'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' bowed to $57 million at the domestic box office over the weekend.
The day after John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum impressed at the box office with a $57 million opening weekend, Lionsgate is already ready for round four.

The studio has dated the fourth installment in the film series for May 21, 2021. The news was first announced via text message to fans who had opted in to updates about Parabellum with a note, reading, "You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming - May 21, 2021."

Keanu Reeves returns in Parabellum as the formerly retired titular hitman who finds himself stripped of the protection from a shadowy international assassins guild. Now stuck with a $14 million bounty on his head, Wick must fight his way through the streets of New York as he becomes the target of the world's most ruthless killers.

No other details have been revealed about the franchise's fourth film, but Parabellum left Reeve's hitman character understandably angry after being shot and thrown from the roof of a building to the sidewalk below.

Parabellum, which received positive reviews and currently sits at 88 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, had a huge debut, dethroning Avengers: Endgame' for the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office. The pic's larger-than-anticipated bow outperformed the opening weekends of the franchise's first two installments — 2014's John Wick ($14.4 million) and 2017's John Wick: Chapter 2 ($30.4 million).

The only other film currently set for release opposite John Wick: Chapter 4 is the DC film Super Pets.

'Flash' and 'Matrix 4' Get Release Dates
DECEMBER 11, 2019 12:19PM by Aaron Couch, Borys Kit

Ezra Miller as The Flash in 'Justice League' (left), Keanu Reeves in 'The Matrix' | Warner Bros./Photofest

Warner Bros. has also undated 'Akira,' which was put on pause when filmmaker Taika Waititi signed on for a fourth 'Thor' movie over the summer.

Warner Bros. has announced release dates for two of its upcoming tentpoles, The Flash and the latest Matrix sequel.

The untitled Matrix film is set to open May 21, 2021, while the long-gestating Flash movie is set to bow July 1, 2022. The studio has also undated Akira, the manga adaptation that has Taika Waititi attached to direct but was put on hold in July when the filmmaker signed on to helm a fourth Thor film for Marvel Studios. It previously was slated for the date now occupied by the Matrix pic.

In a strange twist, the Matrix sequel is now set to go against Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4, with both films starring Keanu Reeves. Matrix co-creator Lana Wachowski is directing the upcoming Matrix effort, which also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carrie-Anne Moss, Neil Patrick Harris and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's announcement marks the latest release-date shuffle for The Flash, which has long-struggled in its development process. Ezra Miller stars as the DC Comics speedster and made his first appearance in a cameo in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The studio had initially planned to get a solo outing ready for a 2018 release but creative challenges and musical chairs for the director's seat kept pushing any start of production back. And back again. It filmmaker Andy Muschietti is on board as director now, with a shoot planned for next year.

Additionally, Warner Bros. has moved the release of its Mortal Kombat reboot up six weeks to Jan. 15, 2021, and has also dated an untitled project about political activist Fred Hampton for Aug. 21, 2020.

    John Wick 5

John Wick 5 Confirmed, Will Shoot Back To Back With Fourth Movie
Lionsgate officially announces John Wick 5 is in development, with the plan being to film it back-to-back with John Wick 4 next year.
    BY CHRIS AGAR

    Keanu Reeves in John Wick

John Wick 5 is officially confirmed and will shoot back-to-back with John Wick 4. Back in 2014, Keanu Reeves experienced a career renaissance when the first John Wick movie came out, earning widespread praise for its exhilarating action sequences and simple, yet effective, story. The film was a sleeper hit at the box office, grossing $86 million worldwide against a $20 million production budget. That success spawned a franchise, with John Wick: Chapter 2 hitting theaters in 2017, and John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum debuting last year. Each installment has proven to be a bigger hit than the last.

Unsurprisingly, Lionsgate had plans in place for John Wick 4, which was originally supposed to premiere in 2021. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, John Wick 4's premiere was pushed back to 2022. Reeves still has to finish filming The Matrix 4 (which was in the middle of production when the coronavirus shutdowns started) before he suits back up as the Baba Yaga. It would appear the delay has proven to be beneficial for the John Wick creative team, and they've locked down a fifth movie in the series.

Lionsgate officially announced John Wick 5 during their most recent earnings call. The idea is for it to film back-to-back with John Wick 4. CEO John Feltheimer said the studio is aiming for production to take place "early next year." You can read his full quote, below:

"We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theaters Memorial Day weekend 2022. We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 and 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year."

Since John Wick 4 hasn't locked down an official shooting date yet, it may be a little surprising John Wick 5 already got the green light, but this development makes sense. The John Wick franchise has gotten stronger as it's gone on, so Lionsgate is interested in keeping it going for as long as possible. Especially as the film industry (both studios and theaters) looks to bounce back from the COVID shutdowns, banking on established properties that are safe bets at the box office is a logical way to go. Unless John Wick 4 marks a steep decline in quality and the series falls out of the public's favor (and based on its track record, it won't), John Wick 5 has the makings of being a surefire hit for Lionsgate.

The John Wick franchise was already serialized in nature (there's virtually no time jump between the three movies to date), so filming the next two installments back-to-back is fitting for the franchise. Other sequels that went this route (like Reeves' own Matrix followups) are normally two halves of a bigger whole, working together to tell an overarching story. It stands reason to believe John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 will be intricately connected narratively. It'll be interesting to see what director Chad Stahelski and company came up with, as each John Wick film further deepens the series' rich mythology and expands the universe. And John Wick 5 may not even be the end of the road. Stahelski's said he has ideas for several more sequels.

    Bullet Films; Everett
EXCLUSIVE: Donnie Yen has been set by director Chad Stahelski to star with Keanu Reeves in John Wick 4 for Lionsgate. Yen will play an old friend of Reeves’ super assassin John Wick, who shares his same history and many of the same enemies.

One of the most successful actor-filmmakers from the East, Yen is known for his unique style of contemporary screen combat. His popularity extends worldwide from roles in such features as xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the IP Man franchise.

Scripted by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, John Wick 4 is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Stahelski, with Reeves and Louise Rosner executive producers. The project begins production this summer shooting on location in France, Germany and Japan. Yen’s casting follows Lionsgate setting Japanese-British pop superstar Rina Sawayama for a lead role.

“We are very lucky to have Donnie Yen join the franchise,” said Stahelski. “I am looking forward to working with him in this exciting new role.”

Added Iwanyk: “Donnie Yen will bring a vibrant and powerful energy to the franchise. We were determined to bring him on board to John Wick 4 and are thrilled for the opportunity to have such a major talent to collaborate with Keanu.”

Yen is represented by Artist International Group.

Hiroyuki Sanada will star in an undisclosed role in Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 opposite Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama and Shamier Anderson. Cameras roll this summer on location in France, Germany and Japan.

The Japanese-born actor has starred in more than 55 movies, most recently Netflix’s Army of the Dead and New Line’s Mortal Kombat. He is also known for playing Musashi on HBO’s Westworld. Sanada will next star in Sony’s Bullet Train opposite Brad Pitt. In Japan, Sanada is renowned for his star-making role in The Twilight Samurai. He is repped by CAA, Lighthouse Entertainment, Axon Entertainment and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.

The Chad Stahelski-directed fourthquel is set for theatrical release on May 27, 2022. Shay Hatten and Michael Finch wrote the screenplay. Pic is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Stahelski and executive produced by Reeves and Louise Rosner.

“Having long admired Hiroyuki as both actor and action performer, I’m thrilled and honored to welcome him to the John Wick family,” Stahelski said.

The first three John Wick movies have grossed $584.7 million at the global box office.
This is really starting to shape up nicely cast-wise.

    John Wick: Chapter 5

Lionsgate Confirms ‘John Wick 5’ in Early Development
With the Keanu Reeves-starring 'John Wick: Chapter 4' topping $363 million globally, film chief Joe Drake addressed the future of the assassin franchise during an earnings call.

    BY CAROLYN GIARDINA

    MAY 26, 2023 10:39AM

Lionsgate’s motion picture group chair Joe Drake teased development of a fifth movie in the studio’s John Wick franchise Thursday during a Q4 earnings call that has fans abuzz.

“What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including five and including the television series, The Continental, which will be airing soon,” he said. “We’re building out the world and when that 5 movie comes, it will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

The March 24 release of the Chad Stahelski-directed John Wick: Chapter 4 was another hit for the assassin franchise starring Keanu Reeves, topping $363 million globally. Its success instantly raised questions about the potential for a fifth film that reps from the studio and the director himself agreed was on the table.

“It’s very flattering for them to come back and, you know, say, ‘We want more,’ and it’s not just a cash grab. It’s legitimately, the audience wants more,” Stahelski said following Chapter 4′s release in an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast series. “I think we all need that little bit of time to go, ‘Whew. Let’s see what’s next.’ … If Keanu and I, a few months from now, sit down at a whiskey bar in Japan again and go, ‘Yep, we’ll never do another one of those,’ and then all of a sudden go, ‘Yeah, but I got an idea,’ we’re open to it.” (Spoilers from the fourth film are ahead.)

In Chapter 4 — with a cast including Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Bill Skarsgard and Donnie Yen — Wick uncovers a path to defeating the High Table, a journey that sets in motion the events of the film and its climatic dual at Paris’ Sacré Coeur.

The movie concluded with McShane’s Winston and Fishburne’s Bowery King standing at a grave bearing Wick’s name. What really happened? We’ll have to wait to find out.
    Why wouldn't they?
