    John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick Director Teases Chapter 4 Is Already in the Works
    By CHARLIE RIDGELY - May 15, 2019 12:47 pm

The third installment in the ever-popular John Wick franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, is set to hit theaters in just a couple of days. Some may think that the completion of a trilogy marks the end of the Keanu Reeves series, but it looks as though that might not be the case. Reeves has been open about his willingness to come back for more movies, and appears those words haven't fallen on deaf ears. Director Chad Stahelski is already hinting that a fourth installment is already in the works.

Ahead of the release of Parabellum this week, Stahelski took part in an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A on Reddit. Early on, Stahelski said that the possibility of John Wick 4 was up to the fans, as so much hinges on the box office success of the films. However, he changed his tune a bit later, when asked which of the John Wick films was most difficult to make.

His answer was pretty surprising, giving that he admitted Chapter 4 would be the hardest, and there has yet to be an official mention of Chapter 4 from the studio.

"1 was difficult because we didn’t understand what we wanted to do, quite," the director began. "Number 2, we had to map up a whole world we didn’t think of before. 3, how do we expand and get the audience something creative, not just bigger and cooler. Number 4, I’m certain, will be more difficult.”

No one has confirmed a fourth John Wick movie, but the fact that it's being talked about behind the scenes shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The entire franchise has been beloved by both critics and fans since it launched in 2014. It also continues to flourish at the box office, especially compared to how little they cost to produce.

How long do you think the John Wick franchise can continue? Are you looking forward to seeing Parabellum this weekend? Let us know in the comments!

'John Wick 4' Sets 2021 Release Date

'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum'

'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' bowed to $57 million at the domestic box office over the weekend.
The day after John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum impressed at the box office with a $57 million opening weekend, Lionsgate is already ready for round four.

The studio has dated the fourth installment in the film series for May 21, 2021. The news was first announced via text message to fans who had opted in to updates about Parabellum with a note, reading, "You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming - May 21, 2021."

Keanu Reeves returns in Parabellum as the formerly retired titular hitman who finds himself stripped of the protection from a shadowy international assassins guild. Now stuck with a $14 million bounty on his head, Wick must fight his way through the streets of New York as he becomes the target of the world's most ruthless killers.

No other details have been revealed about the franchise's fourth film, but Parabellum left Reeve's hitman character understandably angry after being shot and thrown from the roof of a building to the sidewalk below.

Parabellum, which received positive reviews and currently sits at 88 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, had a huge debut, dethroning Avengers: Endgame' for the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office. The pic's larger-than-anticipated bow outperformed the opening weekends of the franchise's first two installments — 2014's John Wick ($14.4 million) and 2017's John Wick: Chapter 2 ($30.4 million).

The only other film currently set for release opposite John Wick: Chapter 4 is the DC film Super Pets.

'Flash' and 'Matrix 4' Get Release Dates
DECEMBER 11, 2019 12:19PM by Aaron Couch, Borys Kit

Ezra Miller as The Flash in 'Justice League' (left), Keanu Reeves in 'The Matrix' | Warner Bros./Photofest

Warner Bros. has also undated 'Akira,' which was put on pause when filmmaker Taika Waititi signed on for a fourth 'Thor' movie over the summer.

Warner Bros. has announced release dates for two of its upcoming tentpoles, The Flash and the latest Matrix sequel.

The untitled Matrix film is set to open May 21, 2021, while the long-gestating Flash movie is set to bow July 1, 2022. The studio has also undated Akira, the manga adaptation that has Taika Waititi attached to direct but was put on hold in July when the filmmaker signed on to helm a fourth Thor film for Marvel Studios. It previously was slated for the date now occupied by the Matrix pic.

In a strange twist, the Matrix sequel is now set to go against Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 4, with both films starring Keanu Reeves. Matrix co-creator Lana Wachowski is directing the upcoming Matrix effort, which also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carrie-Anne Moss, Neil Patrick Harris and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's announcement marks the latest release-date shuffle for The Flash, which has long-struggled in its development process. Ezra Miller stars as the DC Comics speedster and made his first appearance in a cameo in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The studio had initially planned to get a solo outing ready for a 2018 release but creative challenges and musical chairs for the director's seat kept pushing any start of production back. And back again. It filmmaker Andy Muschietti is on board as director now, with a shoot planned for next year.

Additionally, Warner Bros. has moved the release of its Mortal Kombat reboot up six weeks to Jan. 15, 2021, and has also dated an untitled project about political activist Fred Hampton for Aug. 21, 2020.

    John Wick 5

John Wick 5 Confirmed, Will Shoot Back To Back With Fourth Movie
Lionsgate officially announces John Wick 5 is in development, with the plan being to film it back-to-back with John Wick 4 next year.
    BY CHRIS AGAR

    Keanu Reeves in John Wick

John Wick 5 is officially confirmed and will shoot back-to-back with John Wick 4. Back in 2014, Keanu Reeves experienced a career renaissance when the first John Wick movie came out, earning widespread praise for its exhilarating action sequences and simple, yet effective, story. The film was a sleeper hit at the box office, grossing $86 million worldwide against a $20 million production budget. That success spawned a franchise, with John Wick: Chapter 2 hitting theaters in 2017, and John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum debuting last year. Each installment has proven to be a bigger hit than the last.

Unsurprisingly, Lionsgate had plans in place for John Wick 4, which was originally supposed to premiere in 2021. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, John Wick 4's premiere was pushed back to 2022. Reeves still has to finish filming The Matrix 4 (which was in the middle of production when the coronavirus shutdowns started) before he suits back up as the Baba Yaga. It would appear the delay has proven to be beneficial for the John Wick creative team, and they've locked down a fifth movie in the series.

Lionsgate officially announced John Wick 5 during their most recent earnings call. The idea is for it to film back-to-back with John Wick 4. CEO John Feltheimer said the studio is aiming for production to take place "early next year." You can read his full quote, below:

"We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theaters Memorial Day weekend 2022. We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 and 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year."

Since John Wick 4 hasn't locked down an official shooting date yet, it may be a little surprising John Wick 5 already got the green light, but this development makes sense. The John Wick franchise has gotten stronger as it's gone on, so Lionsgate is interested in keeping it going for as long as possible. Especially as the film industry (both studios and theaters) looks to bounce back from the COVID shutdowns, banking on established properties that are safe bets at the box office is a logical way to go. Unless John Wick 4 marks a steep decline in quality and the series falls out of the public's favor (and based on its track record, it won't), John Wick 5 has the makings of being a surefire hit for Lionsgate.

The John Wick franchise was already serialized in nature (there's virtually no time jump between the three movies to date), so filming the next two installments back-to-back is fitting for the franchise. Other sequels that went this route (like Reeves' own Matrix followups) are normally two halves of a bigger whole, working together to tell an overarching story. It stands reason to believe John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 will be intricately connected narratively. It'll be interesting to see what director Chad Stahelski and company came up with, as each John Wick film further deepens the series' rich mythology and expands the universe. And John Wick 5 may not even be the end of the road. Stahelski's said he has ideas for several more sequels.

EXCLUSIVE: Donnie Yen has been set by director Chad Stahelski to star with Keanu Reeves in John Wick 4 for Lionsgate. Yen will play an old friend of Reeves’ super assassin John Wick, who shares his same history and many of the same enemies.

One of the most successful actor-filmmakers from the East, Yen is known for his unique style of contemporary screen combat. His popularity extends worldwide from roles in such features as xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the IP Man franchise.

Scripted by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, John Wick 4 is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Stahelski, with Reeves and Louise Rosner executive producers. The project begins production this summer shooting on location in France, Germany and Japan. Yen’s casting follows Lionsgate setting Japanese-British pop superstar Rina Sawayama for a lead role.

“We are very lucky to have Donnie Yen join the franchise,” said Stahelski. “I am looking forward to working with him in this exciting new role.”

Added Iwanyk: “Donnie Yen will bring a vibrant and powerful energy to the franchise. We were determined to bring him on board to John Wick 4 and are thrilled for the opportunity to have such a major talent to collaborate with Keanu.”

Yen is represented by Artist International Group.

Hiroyuki Sanada will star in an undisclosed role in Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 opposite Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama and Shamier Anderson. Cameras roll this summer on location in France, Germany and Japan.

The Japanese-born actor has starred in more than 55 movies, most recently Netflix’s Army of the Dead and New Line’s Mortal Kombat. He is also known for playing Musashi on HBO’s Westworld. Sanada will next star in Sony’s Bullet Train opposite Brad Pitt. In Japan, Sanada is renowned for his star-making role in The Twilight Samurai. He is repped by CAA, Lighthouse Entertainment, Axon Entertainment and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.

The Chad Stahelski-directed fourthquel is set for theatrical release on May 27, 2022. Shay Hatten and Michael Finch wrote the screenplay. Pic is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Stahelski and executive produced by Reeves and Louise Rosner.

“Having long admired Hiroyuki as both actor and action performer, I’m thrilled and honored to welcome him to the John Wick family,” Stahelski said.

The first three John Wick movies have grossed $584.7 million at the global box office.
This is really starting to shape up nicely cast-wise.

Halle Berry Hints At John Wick Spinoff Featuring Sofia
    Justice for Jinx.
    By Kat Bailey

Sofia Al-Azwar was one of John Wick's key allies in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, aiding him while he was on the run after being declared "excommunicado" by the High Table. Despite that, it seems that the manager of Casablanca's Continental Hotel won't be in John Wick 4.

"Sofia's not in the next John Wick movie," Berry confirmed in a new interview in IGN, which she recorded in advance of the release of Moonfall, in which she will play a starring role.

Berry's comments confirm speculation that Sofia won't be in the next John Wick film, which is currently scheduled to release in 2023. Sofia fans shouldn't despair, though, because Berry says a spinoff may be in the works.

"There could possibly be a Sofia...her own movie," Berry said. "So she might not be in John Wick, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy."

Berry described the potential project as "putting some ointment on a little sore," referring to the canceled Die Another Day spinoff that was to feature Berry's character Jinx, who served as James Bond's love interest in the film. Berry has repeatedly expressed disappointment over the film's cancellation, which would have been a unique turn for one of the series' Bond Girls.

Halle Berry in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.
In the meantime, John Wick has been the subject of a number of spinoff rumors, both real and confirmed. The Continental, a limited series featuring a young Winston Scott in 1970s New York, is set to debut on Starz later this year. A spinoff film titled Ballerina featuring Ana de Armas is also reported to be in development.

It seems that a number of potential John Wick projects are in the works, with Sofia's spinoff being just one of several ideas. As for John Wick: Chapter 4, it's been pushed all the way to 2023 despite completing filming back in November. It'll release on March 24, 2023.
Now that I think of it, the Bond franchise needs spinoffs. I'd watch the hell out of any Bond girl spinoff.

Rina Sawayama Talks New Album ‘Hold the Girl,’ Acting in ‘John Wick 4’ and Being BFFs With Elton John

    By Jem Aswad

    Rina Sawayama
    Thurstan Redding

Rina Sawayama is one of a handful of artists who released an album just as the pandemic was beginning and watched, astonished, as their stars rose during lockdown. The Japanese-British singer’s debut, “Sawayama,” was a wild fusion of Lady Gaga with nu-metal guitars, but also showed a penchant for sentimental ballads amid the power chords and intensity.

The album won a co-sign from none other than Elton John, and its videos got her cast in the fourth installment of Keanu Reeves’ “John Wick” series, due in March. In fact, Elton was one of many people who spoke out against Sawayama’s exclusion from eligibility for England’s BRIT and Mercury awards because she isn’t a U.K. citizen, even though she’s lived in England since the age of 5. After #SawayamaIsBritish became a trending topic on Twitter, the British Phonographic Industry changed the eligibility rules to include anyone who lived in the country for at least five years, including her.

Yet Sawayama, 32, does not like to stay in one place for long, and her new album, “Hold the Girl,” has a different vibe: It’s more musically upbeat and pop-oriented, less intense and angsty while still being emotionally diverse and resonant — and the video for “This Hell” shows a sexy, partying side of her that she hadn’t shown previously (one viewing will make the world wonder why). She talked with Variety about her music, career and more over the course of a lively Zoom call.

Is there any history of musical talent in your family?

None of my family are musicians, but they’re all very good singers: We’d sing in the car and at karaoke, which for Japanese people is like going to church! So I’ve been singing since I was young, but I wasn’t taking it really seriously, and my family didn’t know how to turn this into a career. I think I first wrote my first song when I was maybe 17, but it wasn’t until I was around 26 that I was able to actually do this as a full-time thing.

What do you think was positive and negative about that relatively late start?

Positive aspects: I feel like I have perspective. I think it must be really crazy to have been in this industry from a young age because so many things that are very not-normal are very normal in the music industry! And I guess the negative aspect is that I did not realize how physically taxing this job would be. I love being onstage and don’t feel too tired from that, it’s more the traveling and constantly battling jet lag, and always having to be camera-ready and stage-ready. Exercise doesn’t come naturally to me at all — I’ve always hated it — so it’s been a real reckoning in terms of being fit all the time.

People tend to think it’s easy being a performer, but isn’t it exhausting not only to sing and dance, but to have to be on so much of the time?

Yeah, a lot of artists are actually quite shy in our private lives — I consider myself quite shy and I don’t really like social interactions that much, but for my job, I feel like I can really turn it on. But I think it’s really important to keep something for yourself, so recently I’ve tried to implement at least half an hour or an hour every morning that is purely for me and for no one else. Because I think, yeah, like you said, a lot of people can see what I do as, “Wow, you’re fulfilling your dreams, and it’s all about you.” But you’re giving a lot — if you’re playing to 3,000 people, you’re giving to 3,000 people, and you’re trying to give everything. So having something that is purely for yourself — not for your job, not for anyone else’s enjoyment — is so key, because I didn’t have that for the first U.K. tour or the U.S. tour that I just did.

What do you do during that “Everybody **** off” time?

(Laughing) Yeah, it’s literally that! I can’t stick to a routine, so it’s a mix: It could be journaling, meditating, yoga, sketching, reading. My chill time used to be spent a lot on YouTube, but now I don’t do that as much because there are people reacting to my music or reviewing it, and I just have to be like, No, I’m just using this time to slowly switch off.

Where, when and why does your songwriting inspiration come from? Does it just happen and you drop everything and seize it, or is it more deliberate than that?

I try and drop everything to focus on it, but often I can’t, and that’s where my notes app on my iPhone and my voicenotes app are where I store my notes. I get inspiration from books, podcasts, overhearing a conversation, or a combination of two words that are like really cool together and unexpected. I try and have at least 10 ideas before I go into a session because I’m not very good with spontaneously coming up with things.

Those are all verbal — do you have musical inspirations or do they come with the words? Do you get a melody in your head and sing it wordlessly?

Yeah, the melody sometimes just floats into my head. I’m trying to kick this preconception that I have that if I listen to too much music, then I will inadvertently plagiarize it. I really need to drop that because nothing is original — no good melody has not been done somewhere.

Do you write on an instrument?

Oh, I wish I could play an instrument, and I think my publishers would also appreciate it if I could write on a ****ing guitar rather than in a room with three other people (laughing). I’ve never been very consistent — again, I can’t do a routine and I’ve always hated classes and things like that. But I’m trying, and I’m definitely going to play guitar on my next tour, so maybe, Emily, my guitarist, can help me with a bit of lessoning. I can play, it’s just I don’t want to. One of my big dreams is to just **** off to the middle of nowhere with a guitar and magically come out with an amazing album that I own 100% publishing rights to, but I can’t like see myself doing that right now.

On the no-melody-is-new subject, is that what happened with “Hold the Girl” and its reference to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”? Did you have to pay for that?

No, I didn’t — I think you have to have a certain number of consecutive notes and a certain rhythm for it to be that, although Madonna is such a huge inspiration for me. But one thing that many people have not picked up on, which actually was a whole palaver behind the scenes, was that the guitar riff in “This Hell,” which is definitely very similar “Gimme Gimme Gimme” by ABBA — that has way more similarities melodically than “Life a Prayer.” I actually had to ask Elton to help me reach out to ABBA, like, “Hey, is this cool?” Luckily, they said yes and really no one has noticed it.

    Continued from previous post

You just mentioned Elton John very casually. Are you guys, like, pals? Do you talk often and all that?

Yeah, we do. I’d love to just hang out with him more but we’re so busy, but wherever we get the chance we’ll FaceTime each other and just catch up and just talk about boring stuff, you know? I think people would love to think that we just constantly talk about art, but it’s more like, “Hey, how are the kids doing?,” just little normal things.

Have you read his autobiography? It’s got amazing stories.

No, I really want to — but yes, I hear so many stories. I’m so lucky, I went on holiday with him last year and he has so many incredible memories. He was telling me about… is it his birthday? I think it’s his birthday when he goes really crazy with the costumes and concepts, and he was saying how one year he had to be transported because his wig was so heavy.

Did his cosign of your music just come out of nowhere?

Yeah, it was on his [Apple Music “Rocket Hour”] radio show, he featured a couple of my singles, and then by the second single, he wanted to talk to me. So we had a FaceTime video interview, and it just kind of went from there. We really got on, it seemed really natural. And even though he’s so famous, I just saw so many similarities with my queer friends and the kind of chats that we have, and the humor that we have. But yeah, he just finds a lot of music on his own — he scours, scours YouTube, and finds all this stuff that’s new to me — he teaches me about new music.

He’s just so genuine and so generous. At first I thought, Oh, he’s gonna give me a shout-out and that’s gonna be it, but he calls every two weeks, checking in. And he introduces me to people and he’s helped me so much behind the scenes. He’ll just be like, “Okay, what do you need?” And then he’ll call the person you need, and two minutes later you’ll get a call back from him. He makes dreams come true, it’s incredible. He’s like Santa Claus. Actually — strike that. He’s more like fairy godmother (laughter).

Is there anyone else who has really helped you along in a similar way?

Charli [XCX]. She’s done 10 records — only five full-lengths, but she’s done mixtapes which are basically as long. I ask her about a lot of business stuff. I think people don’t realize that behind every pop star is a business — they have a touring business and merch company and publishing and commercials and so much. I’ll ask her, “Hey, is this normal? Hey, how did you feel a month from the record?,” things like that.

It’s a very, very strange feeling to have fans. It’s not something relatable, it’s not something I can talk to people outside of the industry about. And it’s been really nice just to be able to ask her, “Hey, how do you feel when this happens?” And I always get reassurance and she always makes me feel like, “Oh, that’s totally normal,” or “I can help you with this.” She’s just been incredible. And she’s really kind of set the blueprint for collaborations between female artists. Before, it was always like Britney and Christina or whoever always pitted against each other, and she’s one of the people who’s really shown that it’s fine to collaborate with other female artists — it’s not a competition.

I wouldn’t necessarily say the new album is happier, but it is less angsty and intense than the first one. You’ve said in other articles that it’s the effect of good therapy?

Yes, and also, I intentionally didn’t want to do the first record again, at all — I did it, and if I want to have that feeling onstage, I’ll just perform those songs. This record was written during lockdown, so I couldn’t do some of the experimental stuff that I did in the first record, my brain wasn’t in that headspace. So it was, yeah, a lot of introspection, quite a few ups and downs, which is what I was going through at the time.

It seems strange, but your one of those artists whose careers didn’t seem to be impeded by the pandemic — your album got a lot of attention and praise, even though it was released in April of 2020 and you couldn’t tour. Did you feel that?

Yeah, it was ****ing weird! (laughter) I’m on an indie label, right? And especially because it was my first record, there wasn’t this conversation of, “Oh no, we’d given 10,000 copies of your album to Sainsbury’s and no one can actually go to Sainsbury’s!” so there wasn’t that kind of [commercial] pressure. So it was just, it seems like people are going to really need new music, because so many people were postponing their records, and I’m so happy that it resonated. But it was still really, really surreal to have had that experience throughout lockdown.

It’s strange that so many dance records came out during that time, Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga and Jessie Ware.

Yeah, it was just like, okay, we’re all in a situation that we don’t want to be in, we can’t go to clubs and we can’t be with our friends. So let’s just imagine that we are, through “Chromatica,” through “Future Nostalgia,” through “What’s Your Pleasure.” That’s definitely what I was listening to during that time, for sure.

The “This Hell” video is so different that it’s almost like a different artist, much more sexy and in-your-face and partying, which is something you hadn’t really done before. Is that the direction you’re going in now?

I guess I realized that on my first record, I forgot to look hot in my videos. (laughter) Like, I just sort of forgot that I was supposed to be doing some pop-star **** and looking hot. So I was like, “Right, okay, ‘This Hell,’ let’s look hot.” I wanted to tell a story, but visually, I just really was like, “You know, I’m ready to be kind of hot and get some really amazing lighting.” And it’s funny because I said to Ali Kurr — who also directed “XS” and “Bad Friend” and so many of the videos from the first album — “Babe, I need to look hot this time.” And she was just like, “Oh, for god’s sake, fine.” And me and my creative director would be like, “This shot needs a light on her face” and the directors and everyone would be rolling their eyes like, “Oh, god.” Because cinematic videos and looking-hot videos are very different things. I think with “Hold the Girl,” we really struck that balance, but with “This Hell,” I just wanted to look hot.

How was it working with Keanu Reeves on “John Wick”?

I really love the process of doing something I’ve never done — learning to read scripts and getting into a character. But I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to seeing myself onscreen in that way, to be honest — it’s a very different vibe to “I need to look hot in my music video.” The camera gets so close you can basically see your pulse, it’s crazy, crazy close. I watched a preview and I freaked out because it was so ****ing weird.

But Keanu was amazing, and exactly what you think he’d be like, so chill. But he looked after me in loads of different ways, very much behind the scenes — not telling me that he was doing something for me, but making sure that it was done. Although him being one of the executive producers means that he had a hand in casting me, so that was really crazy to comprehend.
I saw Rina perform at Outside Lands in SF. She was captivating.
