With “Spider-Man: Far From Home” crossing the $1 billion worldwide box-office milestone, Sony is now looking to get the “Venom” sequel off the ground and executives recently met with a handful of new directing candidates.

Sources tell Variety that Andy Serkis, “Bumblebee” director Travis Knight and Rupert Wyatt are among the directors meeting for the coveted job on the film that has Tom Hardy set to return in the title role. Insiders say these are just meetings and no one has moved into a front-runner position.

Ruben Fleischer directed the first pic in 2018, but is not returning as he is in post-production on “Zombieland: Double Tap.”

Sony hopes to shoot the film in the fall.

“Venom,” from Sony Pictures’ arsenal of Marvel characters, grossed a massive $855 million worldwide. The news comes after the studio recently dated an untitled Marvel sequel for October 2020. Comic-book enthusiasts put the pieces together to assume that slot was for “Venom 2,” giving it the same release date as its predecessor.

The next film in this universe is “Morbius,” starring Jared Leto, which is set to bow next summer.

Kelly Marcel wrote the script for the sequel. Serkis previously directed “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” and “Breathe.” Wyatt directed “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and more recently, “Captive State.”

The first “Venom” also starred Michelle Williams and featured a last-minute cameo by Woody Harrelson as chief Venom villain Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage.

Sony had no comment.

Andy Serkis is set to direct Sony’s “Venom 2,” a sequel to last year’s superhero box office smash starring Tom Hardy.

Serkis was among a handful of filmmakers that met earlier this month, a group that included “Bumblebee” helmer Travis Knight and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes'” Rupert Wyatt. Ruben Fleischer directed the first movie in 2018, but isn’t returning as he is in post-production on the studio’s “Zombieland: Double Tap.” Sony hopes to shoot the follow-up to “Venom” in the fall.

Hardy is returning as the journalist-turned-alien symbiote. “Venom,” from Sony Pictures’ catalog of Marvel characters, became a surprise hit for the studio. The comic-book adventure grossed $213 million at the domestic box office and a massive $855 million worldwide. The news comes after Sony recently dated an untitled Marvel sequel for October 2020. Superhero enthusiasts put the pieces together to assume that slot was for “Venom 2,” giving it the same release date as its predecessor.

Best known for his performance capture work in the “Lord of the Rings” and “Planet of the Apes” movies, Serkis has started moving behind the camera in recent years, most recently directing Netflix’s “Jungle Book” spinoff “Mowgli.” His other filmmaking credits include “Breathe” starring Andrew Garfield and Felicity Jones.

Serkis is repped by CAA and Principal Entertainment LA.

‘Venom 2’ : Carnage Gets Company As Sony Sequel Adds Second Marvel Villain

EXCLUSIVE: It looks like Carnage will have company in Sony’s upcoming Venom sequel. The Marvel Comics character called Shriek has been incorporated into the plot of the Venom sequel (due in theaters on Oct. 2, 2020), according to two sources close to the project.

A Sony spokesman declined comment, citing the early-days status of the project, which won’t begin principle photography until early next year. The addition of Shriek is a logical choice considering the character’s history in the pages of Marvel Comics as the sonic-powered accomplice and romantic interest of serial killer Cletus Kasaday, aka Carnage, the monstrous archenemy of Venom.

The fan-favorite Carnage has been the presumptive primary villain for the Venom sequel since the first film arrived in theaters last October with a mid-credits preview scene that featured the uncredited Woody Harrelson as the menacing Kasaday.

Shriek has been closely associated with Carnage since her introduction in Spider-Man Unlimited No. 1 (May 1993) as part of the “Maximum Carnage” saga.

A drug dealer named Frances Barrison became the volatile Shriek after severe trauma allow her latent mutant powers to emerge. In the comics, those powers include sonic energy blasts, flight, and the ability to stir up dark and violent emotions in others.

The casting process is underway but so far the field of candidates for the Shriek role has been expanding, not narrowing. “Right now the role is not filled, the net is cast wide toward many kinds of actresses,” one source said, adding that the filmmakers are “looking mostly at unknowns right now.”

Venom, directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Tom Hardy, was the surprise sensation among 2018’s many superhero films. The $100 million production piled up $856 million in global box office, which includes the film’s lush $111 million opening weekend in China, which now stands as the all-time strongest debut for a Sony release in the coveted market.

Fleischer, director of Zombieland: Double Tap, has moved on from the franchise and Andy Serkis will helm the as-yet-untitled sequel after considerable competition.

Hardy returns for the sequel in the role of Eddie Brock, an abrasive journalist who comes in contact with an extraterrestrial organism that melds to his body to create the toothy super-powered beast called Venom. In the comics, that same organism also gives Kasaday his Carnage abilities.

Sony Pictures' Venom 2 may feature a Spider-Man cameo as MCU actor Tom Holland is rumored to be in talks to appear as Peter Parker in the Marvel movie. Sony, which holds the film rights to Spider-Man and a slew of other Marvel Comics characters, has been working in recent years to build up their own slate of comic book movies. Part of their plans include sharing Spider-Man with Marvel Studios, allowing the Disney-owned studio to introduce Holland's Peter Parker to the Marvel Cinematic Universe even as they hold onto the character's rights. Separately, Sony also developed Spider-Man adjacent Marvel movies like Venom.

Hitting theaters in 2018, Venom was met by mixed critical reviews, but found a fan base of its own. Ultimately, Venom proved to be a box office success, earning $856 million worldwide. As a result, Venom 2 was announced, with Tom Hardy reprising his role as Eddie Brock. Director Andy Serkis also came aboard after the departure of Venom helmer Ruben Fleischer. Venom 2 filming started in November, with the movie presumably aiming for Sony's October 2020 release date (though the studio hasn't yet confirmed that the date is for the Venom sequel). Now, new information about Sony's Marvel movie has come to light.

Today, Geeks Worldwide reported a Venom 2 casting breakdown includes Holland as Spider-Man, but negotiations are still ongoing and a deal may not be reached. Further, GWW points out it's unclear if Holland would portray his MCU Spider-Man or a different version of the wall-crawling superhero. Daniel Richtman also reported Holland being in talks to appear in Venom 2 on his Patreon, and stated it was part of the deal Sony and Marvel struck to keep Spider-Man in the MCU.



News of Holland potentially appearing in Venom 2 shouldn't come as too big of a surprise considering Sony previously tried to get his Spider-Man in the first Venom movie. Rumors of Holland filming a cameo surfaced while Venom was in production, and continued to persist even after it had concluded. Then, when Sony and Marvel's negotiations broke down over the summer, new rumors added the insight that Marvel made Sony cut the Spider-Man cameo in Venom. Leading up to the release of Venom, there was plenty of discussion about whether the movie would be set in the MCU. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige maintained it wasn't connected, while Sony left the door open so the universes could be connected.

If Holland has a cameo in Venom 2 - even if he only appears as Peter Parker, not Spider-Man - it will effectively confirm the universes are somehow connected. If Marvel really wants to keep the worlds different, though, the studios may establish that Venom takes place in a different universe within the multiverse. If not done well, though, Sony and Marvel risk confusing casual moviegoers who don't understand the intricate details of studios and film rights.

Perhaps a multiverse adventure for Holland's Spider-Man is exactly what the studios have planned going forward. After all, there are rumors that Feige is planning Spider-Man's exit from the MCU, using the upcoming solo film Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 and remaining team-up movie to do so. If Holland's Peter Parker travels to another universe within the multiverse, it would explain him jumping to a Sony-only franchise, crossing over with Venom and leaving the MCU all in a way that makes sense to viewers. Whether that starts with a cameo in Venom 2, however, remains to be seen.
