    Warner Bros

EXCLUSIVE: Get ready for another Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander. MGM and Warner Bros have hired Amy Jump to write the script for the sequel. Sources said Vikander liked what she was in Jump’s scripting.

She is best known for her collaborations with director and partner Ben Wheatley, who co-wrote several of them. That includes Free Fire, the action drama that starred Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer. Her other credits include the Wheatley-directed Kill List, A Field In England, Sightseers, and High-Rise. The films are cult favorites in the UK. She broadens the pool of female action writers, who are now in high demand. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons wrote the first installment. Warner Bros released the first film.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, Tomb Raider grossed $274 million worldwide, turning the Oscar-winning Swedish actress Vikander into an action heroine after a string of prestige pics and sci-fi like Ex Machina. Graham King’s GK Films is back as producer after an exhilarating run with Bohemian Rhapsody. Elizabeth Cantillon also is producing.

WME and Independent Talent Group rep Jump.
I wonder if Daniel Wu's character will return. I just saw Daniel last week, and we did chat a little about his role in Tomb Raider, but it was before this announcement was made.

Whether or not Daniel gets a recurring role in the sequel, I feel obligated to start a new thread for TR2, poaching the post above off the TM2018 thread.

    I've been worried about Africa

Coronavirus: Production Hub South Africa Declares National State of Disaster

MGM's 'Tomb Raider' reboot shot in South Africa

The country bans gatherings of 100-plus people and issues travel stops for visitors from hard-hit countries, including the U.S., U.K., Germany, Italy and China.
South Africa, one of the world's leading centers for international film and television production, is shutting its borders to foreign visitors amid the coronavirus crisis.

The South African government declared a national state of emergency Sunday and issued travel bans on nationals from several countries hard hit by the virus. Nationals from the U.S., U.K., China, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Iran and Spain will be denied visas to enter South Africa, while any foreigners who have visited a high-risk country in the past 20 days will also be refused entry, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a televised address to the nation. Travelers from medium-risk countries, such as Portugal, Hong Kong and Singapore, will be required to undergo high-intensity screenings.

South African citizens returning from countries with high incidences of the virus will be subject to testing and self-isolation or quarantine on their arrival. Thirty-five of the country’s 53 land ports of entry are shut as of Monday, while two of its eight sea ports will be closed for passengers and crew changes.

South Africa also issued new regulations to stem the spread of coronavirus within the country, including banning public gatherings of more than 100 people and shutting schools.

“We have decided to take urgent and drastic measures to manage the disease, protect the people of our country and to reduce the impact of the virus on our society and on our economy,” Ramaphosa said. “There can be no half measures.”

The new restrictions are certain to have a major impact on the South African film and television industry. The region is one of the most popular international locations for studio productions. Columbia Pictures' Escape Room 2, the sequel to the 2019 horror hit, shot in Cape Town, as did MGM's video game franchise reboot Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider 2 was expected to begin production in the region later this year.

Among the productions affected is Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ 'Forrest Gump' remake 'Laal Singh Chaddha,' starring Aamir Khan

Does your life need more King Kong-like monsters and Lara Croft? Well, Netflix and Legendary Television have got you covered. The streaming giant is teaming with the TV studio to expand the Skull Island and Tomb Raider universes with two new anime series.

Skull Island will be a new chapter in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise and much like the 2017 Jordan Vogt-Roberts- directed movie Kong: Skull Island, the animated series will follow the adventures of shipwrecked characters that are trying to escape from the mysterious dangerous titular island home to prehistoric monsters, including the titan, Mr. Kong.

Legendary’s Monsterverse kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla and then Kong: Skull Island followed by Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. Things will come to a head in the next Monsterverse chapter with Godzilla vs. Kong which recently released a catastrophically jaw-dropping trailer. The new animated series will continue the story of these monsters and myths.

Brian Duffield (Underwater, The Babysitter) who will write and executive produce the anime series alongside Jacob Robinson who will executive producer under his company Tractor Pants. The animation studio behind Skull Island is Powerhouse Animation which is the company behind Castlevania and Blood of Zeus.

The Tomb Raider anime series will follow the uber-popular Square Enix video game. The series will pick up after the video game reboot trilogy, and follow heroine Lara Croft 25 years after her first game appeared as she explores new territory.

Tomb Raider has led to a global franchise encompassing movies, merchandise and comic books. The new Netflix-Legendary project marks Lara Croft’s first appearance in an animated series. The most recent game release, Shadow of the Tomb Raider garnered great acclaim.

In 2001, Angelina Jolie played the titular heroine in the feature Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and then reprised the role in the 2003 sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. In 2018, Alicia Vikander took over the role of Lara Croft in a new iteration of the film franchise and will step into the role once again in the sequel which will be written and directed by Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green.

The anime series will be written by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja), who will executive produce with dj2 Entertainment Founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog) as well as Stephan Bugaj and Howard Bliss. Jacob Robinson will also serve as EP on this series under his company Tractor Pants.

Not convinced this is anything more than rumor yet...

Angelina Jolie Returning To One Of Her Biggest Franchises?
By APEKSHA BAGCHI | 2 DAYS AGO

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider- The Cradle of Life, released in the early 2000s, were the first live-action adaptations of the popular Tomb Raider video games. While they weren’t well-received by the critics, Angelina Jolie’s performance as the titular character was always heartily praised. And now, a report has emerged which says that the Eternals star is all set to return to the franchise.

As per insider Daniel Richtman, the “studio” is once again seeking out Angelina Jolie as they want the actress to return to the franchise. But like always, Richtman’s report is a little short on details, starting with which studio wants Jolie’s return in the first place. While the original films were bankrolled by Paramount, the reboot starring Alicia Vikander was distributed by MGM and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Back in 2004, despite the negative reviews received by the first two Lara Croft films headlined by Angelina Jolie, their commercial success was enough to push Paramount to announce a third film in the series. But all the plans were permanently benched when Jolie refused to star in another film as she felt there was no need to make another film in the series. The possibility that the plans have been renewed could be considered if not for the fact that the franchise has been rebooted and a sequel to the 2018 film starring Vikander is already in development.

So, if any studio is really seeking out Angelina Jolie for her return to the franchise it has to be MGM and/or Warner Bros. Pictures who are bankrolling the sequel to the reboot. In his report, Richtman also adds that while this anonymous studio wants her to make a comeback in the Tomb Raider franchise, they have a different role for her in mind as the franchise now has Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. The filming of the sequel to the 2018 film was supposed to begin in 2020 in England, South Africa, Finland, and China but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With the beginning of 2021, work on the sequel has restarted. In January it was announced that Misha Green of Lovecraft Country fame will be making her directorial debut with the film and will also pen its script. Earlier in May, Green shared that she has completed the first draft for the sequel and currently, the working title is Tomb Raider: Obsidian. As of now, the cast of the film is yet to be announced, so there is every possibility that Angelina Jolie has been or will be pitched the script of the film. Whether she accepts whatever role the studio has in mind for her or not, depends on her.

In the meantime, Angelina Jolie awaits the release of Marvel’s Eternals. The film will mark her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut and will see her as the immortal superhero Thena who can fashion any weapon out of cosmic energy. Currently, the film is scheduled to be released on November 5, 2021, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.

‘Tomb Raider’ Film Rights Has Hollywood in “Feeding Frenzy”

MGM has lost the rights, and Alicia Vikander is no longer attached to the property as Lara Croft.

    BY AARON COUCH, BORYS KIT
    JULY 28, 2022 5:22PM

Tomb Raider is in search of a new home. Studios and streamers are bidding to acquire the film rights to the property that for nine years was at MGM and has now returned to producer Graham King and his GK Films.

Opening bids were taken last week, but things have escalated into a bidding war.

Alicia Vikander starred in a 2018 Tomb Raider reboot for MGM and GK Films that earned $275 million globally and was to have a sequel directed by Lovecraft County creator Misha Green. That project is now dead, and the role is expected to be recast. The Wrap first reported the news.

MGM, which recently was sold to Amazon, was involved with Tomb Raider thanks to a 2013 deal with GK Films, which acquired the film rights from video game maker Square Enix in 2011. MGM did not respond to a request for comment.

Before Tomb Raider’s time at MGM, Angelina Jolie starred in two features based on the character and released by Paramount: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003). Those films brought in a combined $432 million worldwide. The property debuted in games in 1996.

The bidding war comes as studios and streamers are hungrier than ever for known IP. One source describes the situation as a “feeding frenzy.”

Aubrey Plaza Responds to ‘Tomb Raider’ Fan Casting: I’m Open to Playing the ‘Original Badass’
Plaza even channeled a "female Bond" for upcoming Guy Ritchie film "Operation Fortune."

    Edgar Wright, casting agent?

After the “Shaun of the Dead” director mistook Aubrey Plaza’s recent MovieMaker magazine cover as a promo for “Tomb Raider” 3.0, Plaza herself has responded to the fan casting rumors.

“Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it,” Plaza told Newsweek. “It was so funny when he texted me that because I didn’t realize how strikingly similar those photos are. Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, those are very different. But it’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it.”

She continued, “I love action movies, and I don’t discriminate against big movies or small movies. I love all kinds of movies. I would love it if somehow that turned into a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. That’s an iconic character. She’s the original badass.”

Angelina Jolie originated the “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” onscreen franchise, followed by Alicia Vikander in the role for 2018 reboot film “Tomb Raider.” MGM recently returned the “Tomb Raider” rights to producer Graham King and his GK Films after owning the IP for nine years. There was reportedly a “feeding frenzy” among studios and streamers to acquire the rights to the franchise.

And Lara Croft isn’t the only action role Plaza has on her mind. While starring in Guy Ritchie’s “Operation Fortune” opposite Jason Statham, Plaza channeled her inner James Bond.

“I was like, ‘If I’m going to be in an action movie, I want to be with Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie, that’s good for me,'” Plaza told L’Officiel Australia of playing secret agent Sarah Fidel. “Normally, in those movies the Bond character is always mildly sexually harassing other women or being so overly flirtatious with the women. I was like, I wanted Sarah Fidel to be a female bond, not like a Bond girl, like a female Bond. Where I was like, I’m an agent, but I’m also hitting on all the guys, and I’m just ***** or something.”

She joked, “That was not in the script. I just added that because I thought that’s what a female Bond character would do. We need a female Bond.”

Well, with another MGM-owned franchise missing a lead star, Plaza is easily poised for either.
The TR2 thread has become far more amusing than anticipated. I just screened the first film because of Daniel Wu.
