    Super Bowl LIV

I'm not really a football fan, although I worked Superbowl 50. I'm a Shakira fan. I actually stood right next to her once. She was doing an audience walk through at the start of her show and I was asked to act as security. She ended up stopping right next to me for a few mintues to visit with some young girl fans. She was absolutely gorgeous up close.

How Shakira Is Prepping for Her Super Bowl Performance

If Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are going to perform in the Super Bowl, you know it's about to be an insane show. With Super Bowl LIV about seven weeks away, both performers are going all-in on their preparation. The game's iconic halftime show musical performance, which has featured artists like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga in the past, is typically about 15 minutes long. Performers not only sing live that entire time, they also run through incredibly energetic, choreographed dance routines—with a casual audience of nearly 100 million viewers. To say the least, the gig requires a lot of prep.

    J. Lo has been rehearsing since September, fiancé Alex Rodriguez told Today. Shakira is likewise working hard, and her trainer Anna Kaiser gave Shape the details on her current fitness routine. (Related: The Quick 12-Minute Abs Workout You Can Do Anywhere)

Kaiser, who's also worked with Karlie Kloss and Sarah Jessica Parker, has been training Shakira for 10 years (since her She Wolf video). To help the singer get ready for her Super Bowl show, Kaiser says she's been taking Shakira through some of the workouts offered at her AKT studios, which are known for their focus on dance-based cardio. Kaiser says she's mainly incorporating two of her four signature workouts: "Dance", which alternates between choreographed dance sections and strength intervals, and "Tone", which Kaiser describes as "45 minutes of muscular endurance burnout" or "barre meets Pilates meets core conditioning." (BTW, here's why core strength is so important.)

Shakira's schedule varies, but she'll typically fit in 4–5 workouts per week, explains Kaiser. On top of those workouts, Shakira often has dance rehearsals which are obviously exhausting workouts in themselves, adds the trainer. In addition to her workouts, Kaiser says she has a hand in Shakira's diet. The trainer tells Shape she favors eating small meals throughout the day to keep energy levels up. "I work with Shakira's chef to create meals and snacks," she says. "It's all about real food, she doesn't like supplementing. She wants it to be really good, fresh food and no shortcuts." (Here's the expert take on eating small meals throughout the day.)

Shakira is the type who likes to set new goals and focus on advancing toward them, explains Kaiser. The trainer says she gave the singer an InBody machine, a body composition analyzer that provides measures like skeletal muscle mass and body fat percentage. She also uses a heart rate monitor while she's exercising. "Knowing if your body is changing, if you're getting results, and how hard you're working in class is super important," explains Kaiser. Shakira has a constant desire to become "her best, strongest, most confident self," she says. (Related: 5 Smart Scales That Tell You More About Your Body Than Just Your Weight)

As the big game draws closer, Kaiser says she plans on ramping up Shakira's training. "I will probably meet her at least one more time and do a sort of intensive preparation," she says. She can confirm that everyone's in for a hell of a show: "There's definitely going to be a performance."

    Go niners!

As I've said before, I'm not really into football unless a local team is playing. And this would be one of those times.

Some of my friends that work for Levi's (the Niners stadium) are going with the team. They got flown there first class and a police escort.

I'm eager to see Demi and Shakira, and for the NINERS TO KICK ASS (we're in the SF Bay Area after all). Also looking forward to the ads - there's a few trailers that we'll probably post on Monday.

    Happy Friday all!

Super Bowl LIV: Most Movie Ads Sitting Out the Big Game as Prices Soar
10:33 AM PST 1/28/2020 by Pamela McClintock

Blame the ever-rising cost of a 30-second spot, which carries a price tag of $5.6 million this year.
For the second year in a row, there will be fewer movie ads during the Super Bowl.

More and more, Hollywood studios are migrating to the pregame and postgame shows, where an ad can cost half as much. This year, a 30-second spot airing during Super Bowl LIV carries a steep price tag of $5.6 million, up from $5.2 million last year. Fox is carrying the NFL championship.

While the Super Bowl remains the most-watched live television event of the year in the U.S., ponying up that much money has become a major deterrent for Hollywood, particularly when dropping a teaser or a trailer at other times during Super Bowl weekend can achieve just as much exposure on social media.

Universal and Disney were the only major studios suiting up in 2019 for the actual game, and that appears to be the case again this time out. Paramount, home of this summer's Top Gun: Maverick, will have a major presence in the pregame — Disney and Universal are expected to use this block as well — while Warner Bros. and Sony are sitting it out completely.

After the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs take to the field, Universal is expected to air spots for its summer tentpoles Fast & Furious 9 (due out May 22) and Illumination's Minions: The Rise of Gru (July 3), according to insiders. Fun fact: Every Fast pic has been advertised on the Super Bowl.

The spot for Fast 9 will be preceded by the movie's trailer premiere on Friday at a concert in Miami, which is hosting Super Bowl LIV. Fast & Furious star Ludacris will perform alongside Cardi B, Ozuna — both of whom appear in the upcoming installment — Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. While the trailer drop was officially announced, Universal declined to comment regarding its plans for Sunday.

Disney is likewise keeping mum regarding its specific plans, but will have a presence throughout the day, according to sources. Last year, it aired 30-second teasers for Avengers: Endgame and Toy Story 4 just before and after the game, while Captain Marvel was among the few movie ads during the main event.

The batch of Disney releases that could make an appearance sometime Sunday include the live-action Mulan (March 27) and Marvel's Black Widow (May 1) and two Pixar titles, Onward (March 6) and Soul (June 19).

Paramount will air spots during the pregame for A Quiet Place II (March 20) — two years ago, it did the same for the first A Quiet Place — Sonic the Hedgehog (Feb. 14) and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (May 22).

The studio isn't saying if it has any plans to promote Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick (June 26) at any point during the day, but its Mission: Impossible franchise, likewise starring Cruise, has been a Super Bowl staple in past years.

Combined, the Hollywood studios used to drop as many as eight or 10 spots during the NFL championship, if not more. In 2018, that number fell to six and was even lower last year.

    bummer about the niners

But it seemed like it was a good game. I didn't watch because my antennae was broken and I'm not online at home. Just watched highlights. I'm going to make note that the Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow and about 02.02 2020 below, and then post movie trailers.

Sunday's date is a rare palindrome that hasn't happened in over 900 years
    Joel Shannon
    USA TODAY

Sunday is shaping up to be a unique day for reasons other than the Super Bowl and Groundhog Day: It's also a rare palindrome.

While various forms of palindrome dates are fairly common, 02/02/2020 has the unique distinction of reading the same backward and forward when written out in eight digits in multiple date systems, according to University of Portland professor Aziz Inan.

“We are so lucky to have such a special palindrome date occurring in our lifetime because it’s so rare,” Inan told USA TODAY Saturday.

For starters, it's an eight-digit palindrome: 02022020. Many palindrome dates are only symmetrical if you write the date with seven digits (1-10-2011) — or in some cases even fewer (9-10-19).

But even more rare, according to Inan, is that Sunday's date is an international palindrome: It works whether you write the date as "Month/Day/Year" or "Day/Month/Year," as many countries do.

Inan calls such dates "ubiquitous palindromes," and there won't be another one for 101 years. After that, you'll have to wait until March 3, 3030.

According to Inan's calculations, the last such palindrome date to occur was 11/11/1111 – more than 900 years ago.

For years, Inan has been crunching numbers using a basic calculator and a pad of paper to find unique patterns in dates.

“I advocate for these things because they’re so valuable for STEM education,” he said.

It's an accessible kind of puzzle that he has used to engage students and get people talking about math.

And Inan sees puzzle everywhere – dates that form square roots (3/3/9), dates that make sequential numbers (11/12/13) and even his own name (if you write it in all caps, switch the vowels in "AZIZ" and rotate the Z's to make N's – "AZIZ" becomes "INAN").
