Journey to China: The Mystery of the Iron Mask

I've never seen a Viy film. Has anyone here?

Jackie Chan's JCE Movies to shoot sequel of Russian film Viy
May 4, 2015 Natalya Alexandrova, RBTH
In late March, Moscow's Mosfilm studio launched the production of Russian-Chinese film “Viy 2. Journey to China.” A Chinese crew from Jackie Chan's JCE Movies Ltd along with lead actress Yao Xingtong, fight choreographer He Jun and cinematographer Man-Ching Ng are in Moscow for the production. RBTH went on set to get a closer look.

    From Russia to China

“Viy 2” is a sequel to “Viy 3D”, a 2014 dark fantasy film loosely based on the Nikolay Gogol story Viy, which was one of the highest-grossing films in Russia that year. The plot of the sequel has no relation to Gogol's work and develops the story told in the first movie.

The protagonist, cartographer Jonathan Greene, portrayed by British actor Jason Flemyng, accepts a mission from Russian Tsar Peter I to map Russia's Far East. The Englishman embarks on a journey, which eventually takes him to China, where most of the action takes place.

In Slavic mythology, Viy is a demon capable of killing people by looking at them. His eyes are usually covered by his long eyelids and lashes, which are lifted by his underlings using forks.

The plot is mostly based on Russian and Chinese legends. The Slavic legend of Viy intertwines here with the Chinese stories of dragons and the myths about the origins of tea. The film's producers also promised to present their own version of the Grand Embassy of Peter I and of the legendary Man in the Iron Mask.

Bringing Russian culture to the world

The film is a joint production of two Russian companies, Russian Film Group and STV, and their Chinese partners. According to Russian Film Group producer Alexey Petrukin, the movie's mission is to promote not just Russian cinema, but Russian culture as a whole in the world. The film will be released in Russia, China and the West.

“I believe our film will be interesting to everyone, since it is basically an international production: specialists from Russia, China, UK and Germany are all involved”, says director Oleg Stepchenko. “The movie will be presented at the Marché du Film in Cannes. Granted, it is not an American blockbuster, but we still expect to get good box office performance in Western countries too, not just Russia and China. Our partners are working on it too,” adds STV producer Sergey Selyanov.

In 1697 Russian Tsar Peter I went to Western Europe with a year-long diplomatic mission. After returning, the ruler immediately began reforming the country along European lines, stopped wearing Russian clothes and distanced himself from his relatives. Some early Russian conspiracy theories even stipulated the man who returned from Europe was not the Tsar but an impostor.

Selyanov, who worked in China as the producer of ‘Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan’ by Sergei Bodrov, says he was looking forward to cooperating with the country’s film fraternity again. “I really loved it, although we did have our share of difficulties since it was our first cooperation,” Selyanov says. “After we finished the film, I thought it would be great to work on another Chinese project.”

According to the producers, the funding mostly comes from private companies, although Russia's National Film Industry Support Fund did make some contributions too.

    Mastering Kung Fu

The film's female lead will be portrayed by Chinese actress Yao Xingtong, who has previously collaborated both with Jackie Chan and fight choreographer He Jun. This time she will play three completely different parts – at the beginning of the film she will enact a young kung fu master, and in the course of the story she will transform first into a witch, and then into a Chinese princess.

“This role is unlike anything I've played before,” Yao says. “Firstly, the genre itself is new to me. Secondly, this is a joint Russian-Chinese production, which is also a first – I've never worked with Russian colleagues previously. As for the role itself, I've never played a girl which is that good in kung fu.”

The actress believes both Russian and Chinese audiences would find the film interesting. “I think moviegoers in both countries will love it. This is the first joint production of Russia and China; plus, there are both martial arts and beautiful legends, which I think many will appreciate”, she says.

One of the film's key features is the kung fu scenes, with Russian stuntmen mastering the ancient Chinese art right on the set. This is where the Chinese stuntmen from JCE come in. “They are professionals, and some of the best in fact,” says Alexey Petrukhin. “They have contributed massively in the movie. We don't even try to do anything special ourselves, because in this particular case, we have nothing that would impress them much.”

The Man in the Iron Mask was the name attributed to a mysterious prisoner held in the Bastille. His real name is unknown, and his very existence is unconfirmed. According to one legend, the prisoner was a noble who bore a strong resemblance to a member of the court of Louis XIV of France, and thus was forced to wear an iron mask to hide his features.

The lead Russian stuntman Alexander Solovyev says his team uses the occasion to expand their horizons. “Fights like that are something you don't usually see in our movies, so we can learn a lot of new tricks”, he explains.

Yao Xingtong also appreciates the professionalism of Jackie Chan's stuntmen: “It is my second time working with He Jun and his team, and they really are experts in their field. In fact, I think that they are some of the best kung fu fight choreographers in all of China”.

Director Oleg Stepchenko admits the Chinese are the undisputed masters in the kung fu department, but insists the Russians could in turn teach them a thing or two about acting. “In China, there are no acting schools that could rival our VGIK (Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography) or Boris Shchukin Institute,” Stepchenko says. “Their ways of acting are completely different, so I think they will find the occasion useful in that respect.”

Fight choreographer He Jun is inclined to agree with Stepchenko. “Everyone we work with here knows their job perfectly, and everyone has their own special style. We have also learned much during the filming”, he says.

    Not getting lost in translation

As for understanding each other on the sets, both Russian and Chinese actors and directors are sure that the language barrier would not be an obstacle for cinema. In the course of the production all the members of both crews managed to find a common language and are now mostly able to communicate without interpreters.

“We always use at least three languages when filming. Most of the time we don't even need interpreters at all. Cinema is all about emotion, and this is what unites us”, says Alexey Petrukhin.

Viy 3D. Movie shooting. Source: Press photo

“We do have some language difficulties from time to time, and it is sometimes hard to communicate, but we don't always have to speak – we use the language of cinema,” confirms He Jun.

Judging by the atmosphere that reigns on the set, everyone is enthusiastic about the production, and the crewmembers have become good friends.

“The guys from Russian crew are professionals, and they love their job. They have a very different mindset, but they are very kind and friendly. They also work very thoroughly, and working with them feels great”, says Yao Xingtong.

“It is the first time we visit Russia, and there are a lot of things we just don't know. These guys are really helpful”, He Jun adds.

After having wrapped up filming in Moscow, the united crew went to Tunisia to continue the production. The shooting will go on in China this summer. The release is expected in the autumn of 2016. The producers hope that the film will be released simultaneously in Russia and China.

The Mystery of the Dragon Seal: Journey to China

JC & the Governator - together again.

Schwarzenegger Signs for $200 Million Chinese Epic, Wraps Jackie Chan Film
    By Steven Schwankert|October 26th, 2016

The Hollywood hero and former California governor is involved in two upcoming China film projects.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is making himself at home in China, signing up for a $200 million Chinese historical epic, and filming scenes for a new movie with Jackie Chan.

Schwarzenegger announced Monday that he will star in The Guest of Sanxingdui (三星堆来客), with the title referring to the ancient ruins in China’s southwest Sichuan province where the film will be partially shot. The Terminator star will also serve as an international ambassador for the site, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The film will have an initial budget of USD 200 million, Xinhua reported, and will be produced by Beijing Ajimo, an investment company with no apparent previous film production credits. As the title implies, Schwarzenegger will play a foreign visitor to Sanxingdui during its heyday, thousands of years ago. Set to be shot in 3D, Guest will begin shooting in March 2017 for an expected 2019 release.

The former California governor was accompanied by Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan on his trip to Sichuan, having just completed his role in Journey to China (中国游记) with Chan this week. The film is a Sino-Russian co-production involving China Film Co. Ltd., shooting in Beijing, London and Moscow.

Schwarzenegger did not indicate if Chan would be involved in the Sanxingdui production. He and Chan both appeared in the 2004 film adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days, and worked together on an anti-film piracy public service announcement while Schwarzenegger was still governor.

Schwarzenegger made no mention of either of the Chinese film projects on his social media accounts.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan have joined Rutger Hauer in the cast of Russian-Chinese fantasy adventure movie “Viy-2,” producer Alexey Petrukhin has told Variety.

The film is the sequel to the 2014 Russian box-office hit based on a horror novella by the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. It grossed $33.2 million in Russia, and was released in multiple international territories.

The cast on “Viy-2” is led by Jason Flemyng (“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”), who also starred in the first film, Charles Dance, Martin Klebba and Christopher Fairbank. The director was Oleg Stepchenko, and the screenplay was by Stepchenko, Dmitry Palcev, and Petrukhin.

The movie was shot in China, and is now in post-production. The film, which is budgeted at $48 million, is expected to be released early next year.

The movie centers on English explorer Jonathan Green (Flemyng), who receives an order from Peter the Great to map the Russian Far East. “Once again he sets out for a long journey full of incredible adventures that will eventually lead him to China,” according to a statement. “The cartographer will face many breathtaking discoveries, encounter bizarre creatures, meet with Chinese princesses, and confront deadly martial-arts masters and the Dragon King.”

Journey to China: The Mystery of Iron Mask

JACKIE CHAN AND SCHWARZENEGGER ARE IN A MOVIE TOGETHER THAT NO ONE’S HEARD ABOUT
    THIS IS JUST WEIRD
PUBLISHED ON DECEMBER 8, 2016 BY RHETT JONES

The world of film is changing in some odd ways. China’s massive movie market means that Hollywood is making choices that appease that government and American filmmakers are trying to cast Chinese actors more often. It also means that the Chinese film industry has been grabbing American stars for its homegrown films. But nothing so far has been like this movie starring Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Journey to China: The Mystery of Iron Mask is a sequel to a film with the international title Forbidden Empire. The first installment took 10 years to bring to theaters. Both movies are based on a Russian ghost story called Viy and it kind of looks like a Russian version of the Pirates of the Carribean.

The biggest star in the first one was Charles Dance from Game of Thrones. But the sequel has the aforementioned action stars getting top billing on the cast list. If the trailer is any indication, Chan and Schwarzenegger will not be the main characters because as far as we can tell they aren’t even in the Russian language preview embedded up top but here’s a photo of them on the set:

    Here’s the official synopsis:

The English traveler Jonathan Green receives from Peter the Great an order to map the Russian Far East. Once again he sets out for a long journey full of incredible adventures that will eventually lead him to China. The cartographer will unexpectedly face a lot of breathtaking discoveries, encounter bizarre creatures, meet with Chinese princesses, and confront deadly martial arts masters and even the king of all dragons – the Dragon King. What could be more dangerous than meeting eye to eye with Viy, except doing it again? What would be stronger this time – a staunch skepticism of the scientist or the old black magic that has seized power of Eastern lands?

There’s no release date announced yet. Yeah, it’s a weird thing for two of the biggest stars in the world to be part of this and to hear practically nothing about it. We’ll let you know if more details come out.
    Anyone seen Forbidden Empire (Viy)?

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan Team Up in JOURNEY TO CHINA: THE MYSTERY OF IRON MASK Trailer and Images
Like our founder and editor Todd Brown, I am obsessed with, and flummoxed by, the troubled history and ongoing weirdness surrounding Russia's modern adaptation of Viy. Ten years in the making, the film finally got released last year under the international title Forbidden Empire, and, while it was a fun film full of whimsy and wonderful creatures, it was, by all accounts, something of a disaster all in.

    Except, maybe it wasn't?

Earlier in 2016 it was announced that Viy-2 was rushing into production with the aid of Chinese funding and two massive stars on board, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan. Fantasy regular, Jason Flemyng also returns to reprise his role as cartographer Jonathon Green along with Rutger Hauer.

Here's where it gets weird again. If Russia is intent on turning the adventures of Jonathon Green into a franchise, you'd think that either "Viy-2" or "Forbidden Empire" would stick as titles. Nope, the film has undergone yet another name change, becoming the mouthful that is Journey to China: The Mystery of Iron Mask, eliminating any connection to the famous Russian fable or the first film adaptation.

Below you'll find the first trailer for the film. It's in Russian with no English subs.

Since the film's two biggest names don't make an appearance in the trailer, we've also included the first official image of Schwarzenegger and Chan. Together at last!

Synopsis: The English traveler Jonathan Green receives from Peter the Great an order to map the Russian Far East. Once again he sets out for a long journey full of incredible adventures that will eventually lead him to China.

The cartographer will unexpectedly face a lot of breathtaking discoveries, encounter bizarre creatures, meet with Chinese princesses, and confront deadly martial arts masters and even the king of all dragons - the Dragon King. What could be more dangerous than meeting eye to eye with Viy, except doing it again? What would be stronger this time - a staunch skepticism of the scientist or the old black magic that has seized power of Eastern lands?

I have no idea when this is coming out. If all goes well, it will be under 10 years.

    early October 2017

I wonder if this means a U.S. release. Jackie's last three films, Skiptrace, Railroad Tigers and Kung Fu Yoga, were all released in the U.S. but minimally so. I may have been the only American to see them (and I missed RT )

The Chinese-Russian film "The Mystery of Iron Mask: The Journey to China" will be released in early October to coincide with China's National Day Golden Week, the movie's producer Alexey Pervukhin told Sputnik.
In an interview with Sputnik China, Alexey Pervukhin, producer of the Chinese-Russian film "The Mystery of Iron Mask: The Journey to China" said that the movie will be released in early October 2017, during National Day Golden Week festivities.
It will become the first joint project to have been produced by the two countries' moviemakers.
The country has several Golden Weeks, including one to celebrate the National Day of China every October 1; workers are given a 7-day holiday. The Golden Weeks are known to be periods of heightened travel activity.

"According to the contract, we are dependent on the Chinese party. According to the latest reports, the release of the film is scheduled for October's Golden Week, which falls during the first week of the month. In Russia, the film will be released one day after its Chinese premiere," Petrukhin said.
He added that the moviemakers are satisfied with the result and hope the film will generate great success. The film features action movie stars Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"We have achieved what we wanted. With the film's budget worth 50 million dollars, our Chinese partners hope that the movie will collect at least 200 million dollars at box offices in China," Petrukhin added.

The project, implemented by the Russian Film Group, is promoted by China Film Group Corporation, the largest and most influential state-owned film enterprise in mainland China, as well as Dalian Wanda Group, China's largest commercial property company and the world's largest cinema chain operator, and Sparkle Roll Group, a company that owns 60 percent of the market for online games and about 15 percent of the country's cinemas.

The film tells the story of English mapmaker Jonathan Green, who receives an order from Tsar Peter I to create maps of the Russian Far East. Green will have to travel a long way, and has a series of incredible adventures which eventually lead him to China.
There is a quota system in the Chinese film industry and the official number of foreign films approved by the government for distribution in mainland China currently stands at 34.
In this vein, non-co-production foreign films have almost zero chance of making it to the Chinese box office during China's Golden Weeks.

Jackie Chan is ready to rumble in The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive first-look image from Mystery of the Iron Mask: Journey to China.

Chan produced and stars in the $48 million fantasy thriller, penned by Russian writer-producer Alexey Petrukhin. Also featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, it stars British actor Jason Flemyng as an 18th century English explorer ordered by Peter the Great to map the Russian Far East.

The film traces his long and perilous journey to China, during which he meets deadly martial arts masters, beautiful Chinese princesses and a terrifying mythical monster.

Russian Film Group Corporation is handling international sales at Filmart.
Actually, I'm glad to see that an outlet like THR has issues with exclusivity. It's really difficult to get exclusive on the internet. We were just given an exclusive trailer teaser for INTO THE BADLANDS, but that just meant that we were allowed to 'officially' release it first. Anyone could copy it and release it as soon as it came out and it went into general release a few hours later. Perhaps that's not as bad as getting an 'exclusive' that's actually a month old, but there you have it.

    The Russians

    Will a Russian-China co-production succeed where Hollywood-China co-prods have failed?

Russian Film Group, China's Yangtze Strike Partnership
9:17 PM PDT 5/24/2017 by Vladimir Kozlov

    Russian Film Group Corporation
'Mystery of the Iron Mask: Journey to China'

The agreement stipulates Chinese investment of $50 million in three joint projects.

Russian Film Group, known for Viy and Mystery of the Iron Mask: Journey to China, has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Chinese film company Yangtze.

"Yangtze is based in Hubei, one of China's wealthiest provinces," Alexei Petrukhin, president of Russian Film Group, told The Hollywood Reporter. "At the initial stage, our company and the Chinese partner will collaborate on three feature film projects for theatrical release."

According to Petrukhin, Yangtze's investment in the three projects will be $50 million, while Russian Film Group will invest "slightly less."

Russian Film Group co-produced Viy, Russia's highest grossing movie of 2014.

The company is currently co-producing a sequel to it, Mystery of the Iron Mask: Journey to China, starring Jason Flemyng, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan.

The $48 million fantasy thriller is centered on an 18th century English explorer, who is commissioned by Peter the Great to map the Russian Far East.

The deal between Russian Film Group and Yangtze comes at a time when Russia and China are stepping up collaboration in the area of film production.

This past January, Russia’s state-run Gazprom Media, entered into a partnership with China’s Shanghai Media Group for distribution of film and TV content.

Two months later, China’s Ulan Culture Media and Russia’s Yellow, Black & White partnered up to adapt the Russian sitcom How I Became a Russian (Kak ya stal russkim).

China-Russia Fantasy Film With Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger Finally Gets Release Date

4:40 AM PDT 7/24/2019 by Patrick Brzeski

    Russian Film Group Corporation
'The Mystery of the Dragon Seal: Journey to China'

The first film to co-star the two action legends, 'The Mystery of the Dragon Seal: Journey to China,' is a co-production featuring wizards, princesses, martial arts masters and "the king of all dragons."
Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger's long delayed China-Russia fantasy film The Mystery of the Dragon Seal: Journey to China is finally headed to cinemas in the two countries.

The movie, directed by Russian filmmaker Oleg Stepchenko, wrapped production in Beijing back in February 2017 after lengthy on-again, off-again shoots in the U.K., Russia and China. It then became mired in postproduction for more than two years amid reports of disputes between the producing partners.

But the producers revealed Wednesday that the fantasy spectacle has finally secured a simultaneous release date in China and Russia on Aug. 16. No theatrical release plans have been unveiled for North America yet.

Journey to China is the first feature to co-star action legends Chan and Schwarzenegger, who play a master wizard and an imposing sea captain, respectively. The producers haven't yet revealed whether the two face off in a fight scene.

The film is a sequel to Stepchenko's 2014 film Forbidden Empire (also known as Viy), which was loosely based on a horror novella by Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. The first film starred British actor Jason Flemyng (Snatch, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as an 18th century English explorer who travels east and encounters dark mysteries in a village nestled in impassable forests of Ukraine.

Forbidden Empire became a surprise box office sensation in Russia, earning just shy of $40 million. The producers then decided to go bigger with the sequel, positioning the film as a China-Russia co-production and bringing in Chan and Schwarzenegger.

Previously known as Viy 2: Journey to China or Journey to China: The Mystery of the Iron Mask, the sequel was budgeted at around $50 million, with the story's action relocated to the border lands between Russia and China. The film is penned by Russian writer-producer Alexey Petrukhin and produced by Russia Film Group, China Film Group and Chan's Sparkle Roll Media, among others. Chan also serves as a producer on the film.

The sequel again stars Flemyng as the English explorer, who this time is ordered by Peter the Great to map the Russian Far East. "Once again he sets out for a long journey full of incredible adventures that will eventually lead him to China," reads the film's official plot summary. "The cartographer will face many breathtaking discoveries, encounter bizarre creatures, meet with Chinese princesses, and confront deadly martial-arts masters and the Dragon King."

Charles Dance, Rutger Hauer and Chinese triplet actors, the Luu brothers, co-star in the film. Chinese actress Anna Yao appears as the daughter of the master wizard played by Chan.

    First forum review

Jackie vs Arnie. In a sword fight. That should be 'nuf said, right? But maybe not.

Journey to China: The Mystery of the Iron Mask (the title given to the version I saw) is a fantasy with steampunk elements, Russian Tsar Peter the First, a dragon, Mission-Impossible-esque face masks (both of those two were very GoT), a cutesy demon (not yaoguai, some sort of Russian flying monkey), some goofy hijinks, a dwarf and cross dressing. Set in the Tower of London and some silk road tea plantation, there's the story of Jackie and Arnie bookending this, and then the bulk of the story with other characters. It's actually not bad, engaging enough, one of those flight of fancy fantasies with lots of design elements, plus there's a siege scene, which is okay. The villains are cool, reminiscent of the three storms from Big Trouble in Little China, only steampunk. There's some great costumes and decent flying fight choreo. The Jackie vs Arnie fight is okay, played more for fun than for skills. They're both old now, but they show each other a lot of respect. I was more entertained than I thought I'd be.

I'd love to see Viy now because the reference to that film was very odd, intriguing and incongruent.

I'd recommend it to forum members here, mostly just for bragging rights. I mean to be able to say 'Yeah, I saw that Jackie/Arnie flick that came out this year...how did you miss that?'
