    Kung Fu Panda 4

It sucks when you're trying to promote your latest work and all the reporter wants to talk about is your previous work.

Will there be a 'Kung Fu Panda 4'? Here's what director Jennifer Yuh Nelson told us
She previously oversaw 'Kung Fu Panda 2' and its follow-up

Jennifer Yuh Nelson finally makes her eagerly awaited live-action directorial debut with The Darkest Minds this weekend when it hits cinemas.

But while moviegoers excitedly wait to see what she can muster up away from the animation world, whatever happens, her position and reputation within that genre will still remain intact.

That’s because Nelson was key figure in the huge success of the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise, which over the course of three films has grossed $1.818 billion dollars.

This huge amount, and the continued popularity of the Dreamworks series, means there have long been rumors that a fourth film will be greenlit to kick start a new trilogy.

I recently had the chance to talk to Jennifer Yuh Nelson over the phone about “The Darkest Minds”, during which time I asked for an update on the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise, and whether or not a fourth film might be forthcoming.

“For me it had always been a trilogy, in terms of the exact arc that we were working on. I really don’t know what the plans are. But the pull is Po. Po is the world. So I am sure something will happen at some point, but it’s just that I don’t know what.”

Clearly DreamWorks aren’t in any rush with the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise. All the way back in 2011 its CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg kick-started the suggestions that there would be as many as 6 sequels to the series.

Katzenberg told Empire, “‘Kung Fu Panda’ actually has 6 chapters to it, and we’ve mapped that out over the years.”

Since then, though, DreamWorks has severely reduced its output, and they won’t even release a film in 2018.

But since there are sequels to “How To Train Your Dragon,” “The Croods” and “The Boss Baby” already confirmed, and with “Shrek 5” in development, too, there’s a very good chance they will return to the “Kung Fu Panda” films again at some point in the future.

In the meantime, make sure to check out “The Darkest Minds,” which is now in cinemas.

Can Kung Fu Panda as 'Dragon warrior' save the planet?

Editor's note: Laurence Brahm, first came to China as a fresh university exchange student from the U.S. in 1981 and he has spent much of the past three and a half decades living and working in the country. He has been a lawyer, a writer, and now he is Founding Director of Himalayan Consensus and a Senior International Fellow at the Center for China and Globalization.

He has captured his own story and the nation's journey in China Reform and Opening – Forty Years in Perspective. China Daily is running a series of articles starting from May 24 that reveal the changes that have taken place in the country in the past four decades.

The cartoon movie Kung Fu Panda portrays a character who, from his outside appearance, seems uncoordinated because of his enormous size. However, when Kung Fu Panda focuses his determination, he can become agile and swift, surprising everyone by his speed of his action. Sound familiar?

At each stage of China’s economic reforms, it had to step forward away from its sheer weight carried from the past, and its massive population. When its leaders determined to achieve something, somehow the central system of the nation fell in line, and change inevitably followed.

The draft policy document on ecological civilization drafted by myself and Zhu Yanlai was submitted to China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and also to Li Wei, former personal secretary to Zhu Rongji. Li was now the minister heading the State Council Economic Development Research Center, the foremost economic think tank of the premier. He endorsed the need to expand the still nascent concept of ecological civilization into an elaborated policy that could unlock the perceived contradiction between environmental protection and economic growth.

With his support of this idea, the document and project was taken over by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, where I was soon appointed senior adviser. Simultaneously to the European Union's Environmental Director General on China's green growth policies under a China-EU Dialogues framework agreement supported research teams involving both European and Chinese energy experts. Why EU’s involvement? Europe has some of the most advanced technology on renewable energy and green finance. However, the population of most European countries is smaller than many of China’s big cities. By combining European technology with China’s scale of production and infrastructural rollout, costs of renewable energy could come down drastically.

Working with the ministry of Environmental Protection Strategic Policy Research Institute, we condensed the Ecological Civilization Sixteen Measures into a five-pillar framework. This framework was not based on any Western model, but rather, on a traditional Chinese matrix called the Five Elements consisting of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth (Jin Mu Shui Huo Tu). The five pillars include 1) “Earth” state infrastructure investment into renewables and smart transport (the “Great Green Grid”), 2) “Water” fiscal and credit policy to guide businesses in adopting renewable and efficient energy, 3) “Metal” replacing GDP with a broader, more inclusive, set of measures, 4) “Wood” a macro-coordinating policy body to provide a structural framework coordinating genuine green growth among ministries, 5) “Fire” education to transition values toward conservation. Core to the success of this policy transition would be creating a fresh awareness among Chinese people that all things are connected and that we need new measures of success and pride other than material ones.

At the Ministry of Finance, one official commented quite frankly. “China should use economic crisis as opportunity and get rid of outdated enterprises and push green." He then added, "The current generation of government officials knows that this needs to be done. The Great Green Grid is a bigger challenge than the reforms of 1980s and 1990s.”

With carefully guided state policy, things can happen in China quickly. This requires political willpower. As a managed market, ultimately a political decision is required to put in place the right policies that can guide market forces to make wind and solar power competitive with fossil fuels. By 2013, China's new President, Xi Jinping, had officially pronounced the concept of "ecological civilization" and called for quality rather than quantity growth. They wanted to project a non-theory-based pragmatic set of alternatives.

When Rob Parenteau, an independent financial adviser based in San Francisco, heard of the green growth policy proposals underway for China, he wrote the following: "Yes, and with the banking system essentially an extension of their fiscal policy, they [China] have the capacity to drive down the unit costs of production and push out the technological frontier on green tech. Done right, they could end up owning the 21st century industries while correcting their own growth path toward one more sustainable than the current suicidal one. Meanwhile, in the U.S., we will be debating whether we can afford to saddle future generations with the horrible curse of public debt…which is actually an asset held by households… that can help finance the construction and implementation of public assets... that improve the profitability and prospects for the business sector as well as lower future cost trajectories. Solarize all public buildings in the southern half of the U.S. and insulate all government buildings in the northern half, as an opening Green New Deal. Create jobs, teach skills, and scale up demand to drive down unit costs. Or wait until the Chinese own the whole thing.”

Whether in North America or Europe, Asia or Africa, a plethora of renewable energy and energy saving industries will need to replace our old existing systems. With the potential to roll out a spectrum of new employment opportunities for both white and blue collar, in sectors ranging from finance, engineering, environmental science, transportation, and infrastructure.

Does Washington really want change? Does it want to evolve and lead renewable and efficient energy as a mega trend and the next driver of global growth? Or will Washington politicians sit back and let others take the lead as its economy declines further because it is fossilized in old ways and ideological debates?

The problem is that America is locked in a political stalemate that defies rationality. The politics have become like the economics, ideological, not pragmatic, only black and white, without any room for grey. Regardless of which side you take, Democrat or Republican, the result is that views are stagnant and entrenched--one side votes opposite the other side just for the sake of it. It is no longer logical politics, but that kind of vindictiveness that comes about when nobody has an answer but everyone wants somebody to blame. So the strategy is to blame the other side. It has just become an knee-jerk reaction, which means that any form of logic-like, let's try to avoid a crisis rather than just react to another one-is off the game board altogether. Even NiccolòMachiavelli, if he could see this mess, would throw up his hands and tell the Prince to call it a day. There is just nothing you can do with these guys.

So maybe at the end of the day, through ecological civilization, Kung Fu Panda as Dragon Warrior will save the planet. With massive programs for renewable and efficient energy, together with smart transport on a scale never before seen, green energy investments will be the next economic mega trend for the world.

In Kung Fu, there’s a concept called external power (Wai Gong) and internal energy (nei gong) involving qi, which is subtle ultimate energy. Transforming the energy systems, smart environmental technology and perspectives of our planet, maybe ecological civilization will be China’s greatest soft power.

DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Is Happening; Universal Sets 2024 Release

    Everett Collection
There will be more Kung Fu Panda. Universal has set a March 8, 2024 theatrical release for the fourth installment to the Jack Black voiced franchise which has grossed $1.8 billion through three movies.

The first movie, which was released in 2008, received an Oscar nomination in the animated feature category. No directors are set as of yet for Kung Fu Panda 4, but Uni is planting their stake in the ground date-wise.

Part 4 will follow the further adventures of wide-eyed Po in ancient China, whose love of kung fu is matched only by an insatiable appetite.

Similar to other Dreamworks Animation titles such as Trolls and Shrek, the Kung Fu Panda universe extends throughout consumer products, video games, an Emmy nominated television series (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness on Nickelodeon) and global theme-park attractions. There’s also another spinoff TV series, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight featuring Black reprising the voice of Po, James Hong reprising Mr. Ping and Rita Ora.

DreamWorks Animation this year released The Bad Guys which made close to $246M at the global box office. The Uni-owned animation division also had one of the few pandemic standouts at the Thanksgiving 2020 box office when many theaters were closed, The Croods: A New Age, which grossed close to $216M worldwide.
    I guess Kung-Fu-Panda-The-Dragon-Knight is a warm up?

‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Sets 2024 Release
Universal Pictures will release DreamWorks Animation’s latest chop-socky martial arts movie in the franchise on March 8, 2024.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight COURTESY OF NETFLIX

Universal Pictures has set a March 8, 2024 release date for Kung Fu Panda 4.

The latest chop socky pic from the movie franchise that features Po and the Furious Five will take the place of the untitled DreamWorks Animation film. Inspired by traditional martial arts and set in ancient China, the Kung Fu Panda film series tells the epic tale of wide-eyed Po, whose love of kung fu is matched only by an insatiable appetite.

The Academy Award-nominated 2008 inaugural chapter — with the lovable bear Po that is the Chinese panda voiced by Jack Black — became DreamWorks’ highest-grossing original animated film.

The original Kung Fu Panda movie launched a trilogy that has earned more than $1.8 billion at the global box office. With its massive fan base, the franchise has expanded to a cross-category consumer products program, video games, an Emmy Award-winning television series and global theme-park attractions.

That includes Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, the third TV series in the franchise born from the original animated feature film Kung Fu Panda, which was followed by big-screen sequels in 2011 and 2016.

The Netflix animated series was backed by voice actors Black, Rita Ora and James Hong, alongside art director Ellen Jin and executive producers Peter Hastings and Shaunt Nigoghossian, on Po’s latest journey as a martial arts warrior.
So is Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight now canon like the Clone Wars?

Jack Black, Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake Tease ‘Kung Fu Panda’ and ‘Trolls’ Sequels
The trio took the stage to promote their Dreamworks Animation projects at CinemaCon.

Dreamworks Animation got some help from Jack Black, Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake to highlight its upcoming slate, including Trolls Band Together — a new movie from its Trolls franchise set to open Nov. 17 — and Kung Fu Panda 4, slated for a March 8, 2024 release.

Jack Black — the voice of panda Po — got a hero’s welcome as he took the stage to introduce Kung Fu Panda 4. He described the story for the spring 2024 release via a comedic and dramatic monologue: “Po faces his biggest challenge ever. Will he survive?”

Black shared that Po is set to become the spiritual leader of his Valley of Peace, but also needs a succession plan for his role as the chosen Dragon Warrior. In the story, he also will train a new kung fu practitioner and meets a villain called the Chameleon who can summon villains from the past. “Po has to defeat every one of them,” the star promised.

Mike Mitchell (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Trolls, Shrek Forever) is set to direct Kung Fu Panda 4. Stephanie Ma Stine (a story artist on How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World) was named co-director and Rebecca Huntley (The Bad Guys) is set to produce.

Colorful new footage from Trolls Band Together was introduced by Kendrick, who returns as the voice of Poppy, and Timberlake, who is back as Branch. They took the stage to “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Trolls World Tour. “That song follows me everywhere,” quipped Timberlake.

Kendrick teased that in this “weirder and wilder” third movie in the franchise, Poppy and Branch are “out of the friend zone at last,” and Poppy learns that Branch was once part of boy band BroZone. “That’s something you know a thing or two about, JT. It feels a little in sync with your life,” she quipped to applause. Five new songs will be introduced in the film.

“Dreamworks believes in making movies for theaters; we value the collective viewing experience,” DWA president Margie Cohn said, adding that the studio is “expanding exciting franchises and also introducing new originals. Everyone loves a franchise but each generation wants an original to be its own.”

To that point, Cohn introduced a sneak peek at unfinished footage from Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, ahead of its June world premiere at Annecy. Cohn described it as an intergeneration story with the potential to be the “girl power movie of the summer.”

Helmed by Oscar-nominated director Kirk DeMicco (The Croods), the story follows a shy teenager (Lana Condor), who in the clip panics as she learns from her grandmother (voiced by Jane Fonda) that she comes from a family of legendary sea krakens.

Ruby Gillman makes it world premiere June 15 at the Annecy International Animation Festival ahead of its June 30 theatrical release.

Jack Black Reveals Tenacious D Will Make New Song For Kung Fu Panda 4
    Dec 5, 2023

Photo: Rodin Eckenroth / Getty Images Entertainment / Getty Images

Jack Black recently announced that he will create a new song as Tenacious D for Kung Fu Panda 4.

Black said, "We’ve been working on a couple of things. I got a new Kung Fu Panda coming out next year, and they asked if we would do a song for the credits."

He continued on the success of Tenacious D, saying, "It was a real thrill to see it, to get into the ears and minds of people all around the world. I’d never really had that kind of an impact before in that space. I’m in a band and we’ve had lots of fun touring the world and playing music for years, but it hits different when you’ve got a bona fide hit that’s gone viral like that."

He added, "And it was crazy. Everywhere I looked on social media, there was 'Peaches' and I was like, 'Hey, that’s me.' There’s a little burst of pride when you are part of the zeitgeist, as they like to say."

Kung Fu Panda 4 will be released next year.
I've seen Tenacious D live. Very entertaining.

On Thursday, February 22, James Hong, trailblazing actor and tireless advocate for Asian American artists, will have his hands and feet immortalized in cement at the legendary TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX® on Hollywood Blvd.

DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda 4 arrives in theaters on March 8, 2024.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Feb. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, February 22, at 11:00 a.m., Hollywood icon James Hong will have his hands and feet immortalized in cement at an official ceremony at the legendary TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX® on Hollywood Blvd. This special ceremony is set to celebrate the release of Hong's latest film, DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda 4, to mark Hong's 95th birthday, and to recognize and applaud his unparalleled contributions to the entertainment industry over his astounding seven-decade career.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Chinese immigrant parents, Hong has carved an unprecedented path in Hollywood. From his beginnings as a stand-up comedian in the 1950s to his first uncredited film roles in multiple 1954-55 films, to a multitude of versatile and groundbreaking acting roles, Hong tenaciously pursued his dreams, overcoming the challenges posed by the lack of substantial roles for Asian actors during that era.

Now, at the age of 94, Hong's illustrious career boasts more than 600 credits, a testament to his remarkable versatility and talent showcased across myriad roles. These include portraying the headwaiter in Flower Drum Song (1961); Kahn, Evelyn Mulwray's loyal butler in Chinatown (1974); eye manufacturer Chew in Blade Runner (1982); David Lo Pan in cult classic Big Trouble in Little China (1986); the sharp private eye Shin in Black Widow (1987); Jeff Wong in Wayne's World 2 (1993); as the voice of Chi Fu in Mulan (1998); and recently as Gong Gong in the Best Picture Oscar®-winner Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).

Hong continues to charm audiences with his endearing portrayal of Mr. Ping, the adoptive father of Dragon Warrior Po (Jack Black), in DreamWorks Animation's beloved Kung Fu Panda franchise, which has earned almost $2 billion worldwide, with three films spanning almost 16 years. Hong returns to the role of Mr. Ping, a devoted father goose and proud owner of a thriving noodle shop, for the first time in almost a decade in Kung Fu Panda 4 (in theaters March 8).

The TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX® handprints-footprints tribute is the most selective of all Hollywood honors. Over the course of 96 years, only 250-plus such honors have been presented. Movie exhibitor Sid Grauman opened The Chinese in 1927 and launched the handprints-footprints ceremony a year later as a promotion to advertise his many premieres and first-run films. Among the first handprints and footprints were those of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.

Notably, it wasn't until 1991 that an Asian American actor first made a historic addition to the esteemed roster of Hollywood icons who have imprinted their hands and feet at the TCL Chinese IMAX®, when George Takei joined the list alongside his Star Trek co-stars. Since then, a select group of Asian and Asian-American actors and filmmakers have been honored, including actor Jackie Chan and directors John Woo and Justin Lin.

Hong now joins a list of Hollywood acting luminaries that includes Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, Humphry Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, Kirk Douglas, Steve McQueen, Sidney Poitier, and Hong's Chinatown co-star Jack Nicholson.

In addition to his on-screen accomplishments, Hong has actively addressed the challenges faced by Asian actors by advocating for better representation in the industry. In 1965, he co-founded the East West Players, the nation's longest-running Asian American theater, with a commitment to raising the visibility of the Asian American experience. Since then, East West Players continues to build platforms for artists of color while advocating for multi-faceted representations in the performing arts.

    About Kung Fu Panda 4
This spring, for the first time in almost a decade, comedy icon Jack Black returns to his role as Po, the world's most unlikely kung fu master, with a hilarious, butt-kicking new chapter in DreamWorks Animation's beloved action-comedy franchise: Kung Fu Panda 4.

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he's tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.

Even worse, there's been a recent sighting of a wicked, powerful sorceress, Chameleon (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small. And Chameleon has her greedy, beady little eyes on Po's Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

So, Po's going to need some help. He finds it (kinda?) in the form of crafty, quick-witted thief Zhen (Golden Globe winner Awkwafina), a corsac fox who really gets under Po's fur but whose skills will prove invaluable. In their quest to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon's reptilian claws, this comedic odd-couple duo will have to work together. In the process, Po will discover that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.

The film features the voice talent of returning stars Academy Award® winner Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master, Shifu; James Hong (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Po's adoptive father, Mr. Ping; Academy Award® nominee Bryan Cranston as Po's birth father, Li, and Emmy Award nominee Ian McShane as Tai Lung, Shifu's former student and arch-nemesis. Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) joins the ensemble as a new character, Han, the leader of the Den of Thieves.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is directed by Mike Mitchell (DreamWorks Animation's Trolls, Shrek Forever After) and produced by Rebecca Huntley (DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys). The film's co-director is Stephanie Ma Stine (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power). In 2008, the Academy Award®-nominated 2008 inaugural chapter, Kung Fu Panda, became DreamWorks Animation's highest-grossing original animated film and launched a franchise that has earned more than $1.8 billion at the global box-office.

About The TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX®
Since 1927, The TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX® has been the home of the most important, star powered red carpet movie premieres and special events, where Hollywood's biggest and brightest talents have come to watch their movies.

In 2013, the main theatre was relaunched as the world's largest IMAX® theatre. The most famous movie theatre on the globe is world-renowned for its unique forecourt of the stars, featuring cement hand and footprints of major movie stars, from Marilyn Monroe to Brad Pitt, and numerous stars from all eras of Hollywood.

In addition to being a major international tourist destination, The TCL Chinese Theatre, and its six adjacent cinemas, the TCL Chinese 6, are everyday working movie theatres, hosting millions of moviegoers year round.

The TCL Chinese Theatre was declared a historic-cultural landmark in 1968, and there has always been a restoration program in process to maintain the theatre's beauty. With its current facelift and new name and new added amenities and event spaces, guided by a new and vigorous ownership team, the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX and its famed "hands and footprints in cement" forecourt will continue to be the preferred location for tourist visits and the entertainment industry's most prestigious red carpet premieres for years to come.

Unlike other Hollywood awards, The TCL Chinese Theatre handprints-footprints tribute is the most selective of all, since over the course of 95 years only 250-plus such honors have been presented. Movie exhibitor Sid Grauman, who was one of Hollywood's best known and most creative showmen, opened The Chinese in 1927 and launched the handprints-footprints ceremony a year later, as a promotion to advertise his many premieres and first run films. Among the first handprints and footprints were those of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.

Today, The TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt is among the world's most photographed tourist sites, annually attracting as many visitors as the Taj Mahal in India and the Prado Museum in Madrid. Along with Disneyland and Universal Studios, The TCL Chinese Theatre is among Los Angeles' top five tourist attractions, according to About.com.

The TCL Chinese Theatre hosts more than 40 red carpet film premieres annually and since it opened, it has hosted three Academy Award® ceremonies and numerous world premieres, including those for internationally-acclaimed film franchises, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. More movie popcorn has been consumed here by more famous faces than anywhere else on earth and The TCL Chinese Theatre celebrated its 95th birthday in 2022.
