Might as well get a Wonder Woman 3 thread up and rolling.

Wonder Woman 3 Will Probably Be Set in Present Day, But Without Chris Pine
Director Patty Jenkins doesn’t want to see the Princess of Themyscira in “another period piece.”

We’ve still a ways to go until Wonder Woman ’84 ropes up the box office in 2020, but it’s never too early to look ahead. Far ahead, even, as franchise director Patty Jenkins now confirms another sequel would likely break the mold with a story set in modern-day.

While the first Wonder Woman focused on Diana (Gal Gadot)’s World War I origins, and next year’s upcoming Wonder Woman ’84 will explore the Amazon warrior’s adventures in the 1980s, Jenkins told The Hollywood Reporter that she’d like to try something different for a third movie. “I'm not set, but I'm not dying [to do] another period piece,” she said. Instead, the unconfirmed third film would likely pick up with its title character after the events of 2016’s Batman v. Superman and 2017’s Justice League.

“It's definitely one of the things we talked about,” offered Jenkins of her future with the franchise. “I'm not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go? You have to go forward. It's definitely a contemporary story. That's all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven't totally nailed down.”

Wonder Woman ’84 is itself something of an oddity, as both Batman v. Superman and Justice League depicted the character as having eschewed superheroics in the years since love interest Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) perished in World War I. Pine is curiously present for the ‘80s-set sequel as well, though the actor doubted his participation in a third film. “I think Steve’s done,” Pine told Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his and Jenkins’ new TNT series I Am the Night. “I think Steve’s done his bit. I wish them all the luck in the world.”

Wonder Woman ’84 is currently set for a June 5, 2020 release, having previously been pushed back from a late 2019 premiere.

‘Wonder Woman 3’ in the Works With Director Patty Jenkins

Diana Prince is officially heading back to the big screen for a third “Wonder Woman” movie. Warner Bros. has fast-tracked development on another installment in the DC Comics franchise, with Gal Gadot returning to star as the title heroine and Patty Jenkins back to write and direct the concluding entry in the superhero trilogy.

The announcement comes on the heels of the release of “Wonder Woman 1984,” the studio’s superhero sequel that debuted on the company’s streaming service and in select movie theaters on Christmas Day.

Warner Bros. said the third “Wonder Woman” movie will have a traditional theatrical release.

“As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” said Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich.

Though many opted to watch “Wonder Woman 1984” at home, the film still generated surprisingly robust ticket sales — at least for pandemic times. “Wonder Woman 1984” collected $16.7 million from 2,100 North American theaters, the best opening weekend to date in the coronavirus era. In terms of HBO Max viewers, the studio said nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers watched the film on Friday, with millions more viewing through cable or wireless access. HBO Max, which launched in May, currently has 12.6 million active users.

“‘Wonder Woman 1984’ broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend,” said Andy Forssell, head of WarnerMedia’s direct-to-consumer business. “During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.”

Nothing is known yet about the final chapter in the “Wonder Woman” trilogy. The sequel, which had been delayed numerous times amid the pandemic, starred Kristen Wiig as the villainous Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as the over-the-top businessman Max Lord and Chris Pine as Diana’s love interest, Steve Trevor.

Gadot’s Wonder Woman will be seen next in Zack Snyder’s four-part cut of “Justice League,” due on HBO Max in 2021.

‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ Sequel on Ice, Potential ‘Man of Steel 2’ in Jeopardy as Warner Bros. Considers Major DC Reboot

    By Adam B. Vary

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Could DC be hitting the reboot button?

A sequel to 2020’s “Wonder Woman 1984” from director Patty Jenkins is not moving forward at Warner Bros., as new DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran prepare to unveil their strategy next week for the future of DC adaptations to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

Only Gunn and Safran know for sure what they’ll be saying to Zaslav. But the presentation has the potential to mark a critical inflection point for the company, with the very real possibility that the cinematic universe created by filmmaker Zack Snyder would reach a definitive end following the premiere of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in December 2023.

According to a studio insider, after Jenkins submitted a treatment for a third “Wonder Woman,” she was informed by studio leadership that it did not mesh with Gunn and Safran’s emerging plans for the DC Universe, and the studio would not make the project. Curiously, on Monday, “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot posted to social media that she was “so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character” and that she “can’t wait to share her next chapter with you,” sparking widespread speculation as to what that next chapter would be.

A representative for Warner Bros. declined to comment and a representative for Jenkins did not respond to a request for comment.

“Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill also recently teased that he was set to reprise his performance as Superman after his brief appearance in the post-credits scene of October’s “Black Adam” opposite Dwayne Johnson. But now both Cavill and Johnson’s future with DC is an open question, with a Hollywood Reporter story suggesting that the new DC Studios plan could kill any potential “Man of Steel” sequel, while the prospects of another installment of “Black Adam” have been harmed by the shaky financial returns at the box office.

At the heart of all of it is the deeply fraught history of what fans have dubbed the Snyderverse — the series of DC adaptations that first launched with 2013’s “Man of Steel” and cast Cavill, Gadot, “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa and “The Flash” star Ezra Miller as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. From the start, Snyder’s morally grey and visually gritty approach proved divisive with DC fans and general audiences alike — some loved it, others hated it. But while Snyder effectively exited the DC Universe after 2017’s “Justice League” (only returning for 2021’s recut “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” after a relentless online campaign), most of the actors Snyder cast remained in their own individual franchises.

Most of those post-Snyder movies were major financial successes, but the Snyderverse has also been dogged by scandals. Ray Fisher, who played Cyborg in both “Justice League” films, parted ways with Warner Bros. in 2021 after waging his own relentless online campaign alleging misconduct by previous studio leadership. And while “The Flash” is still scheduled to debut in June, Miller — who apologized in August “to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior” after weathering a litany of misconduct and abuse allegations — is all but certain to be done with the character.

There is still every chance that Cavill, Gadot, Momoa and Johnson could return to the DC fold in one way or another. They’re enormously popular stars with global appeal who all seem eager to suit up again. Only Gunn and Safran know for sure, however, whether they’ll get the call.
WW84 was terrible. I still like Gal in the role however.

I agree, I really liked the first WW movie, but the sequel left a lot to be desired. It didn't add to her character development really at all and didn't do anything for a tie in with the rest of the universe if they want to do more with the Justice League.

    Gunn it

James Gunn reassures DC fans amid rumors about future movies: 'We're still just beginning'
"Building the next 10 years of story takes time," the new co-chair of DC Films tweeted following reports that projects like Wonder Woman 3 or a Black Adam sequel could be dead.

James Gunn wants to reassure fans about his plans for future DC movies.

The Suicide Squad director was recently named co-chair of DC Films alongside producer Peter Safran, and though they won't present their plans to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav until next week, The Hollywood Reporter reports that big changes could be in store, including the potential end of Gal Gadot's time as Wonder Woman.

Representatives for WBD have not responded to EW's request for comment on THR's report, but Gunn himself posted a thread to Twitter on Thursday directly referencing it. Although he didn't confirm or deny specifics, he communicated that he and Safran are prioritizing DC's stories and characters.

"As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven't decided yet whether it's true or not," Gunn wrote in the first tweet, without elaborating which was which.

In another tweet, Gunn continued, "Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we're still just beginning."

WB representatives did not respond to EW's request for additional comment on Gunn's tweets.

Gunn first made his name as a superhero director at Marvel with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He recently oversaw the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and the new trailer for next year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 teases one last adventure for the space-faring misfits as the director dedicates his full attention to DC (where he has already overseen the Peacemaker show for HBO Max, featuring John Cena's character from The Suicide Squad).

According to the aforementioned THR report, which was based entirely on unnamed sources, DC is not moving ahead with Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3. A long-awaited Man of Steel sequel starring Henry Cavill's Superman may also be dead in the water, even though Cavill recently reprised the role in the post-credits scene for Black Adam. Shortly afterward, he ended his other big franchise commitment by departing Netflix's The Witcher.

Speaking of Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam, a sequel is also said to be "unlikely" given the film's middling box office performance. Tweets this week from Johnson and Gadot — the former asserting that Black Adam actually will turn a profit, and the latter saying she "can't wait to share [Wonder Woman's] next chapter with you" — could be indicative of ongoing debates within the studio.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and the long-delayed The Flash starring Ezra Miller are still on track to hit theaters next year, but how they connect to other films remains unclear.

"As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait," Gunn wrote in the final tweet in his thread. "We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer."

    Jenkins walked

Warner Bros Didn’t Cancel ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ Patty Jenkins Walked Off the Project (Exclusive)
    by UMBERTO GONZALEZ | December 8, 2022 @ 3:45 PM

In an exchange with studio chief Mike DeLuca, the ”Wonder Woman 1984“ filmmaker sent him a dictionary definition of ”character arc“

Hollywood was stunned by the news this week that Warner Bros Discovery would not move forward with “Wonder Woman 3,” but in fact it was Patty Jenkins, who directed the first two films in the superhero series, who walked off the project after rejecting studio notes on her treatment, multiple individuals told TheWrap.

Jenkins’ exit came as James Gunn and Peter Safran have been getting settled into their new roles as co-CEOs of DC Films and are busy plotting out an extensive multi-year plan for DC films, TV shows and games that they will present to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav next week.

Although Gunn and Safran have been given a mandate to reshape the DC landscape, Warner Bros. Discovery has “ongoing enterprises” that “nobody was going to mess with,” according to one insider. This includes Matt Reeves writing the sequel to “The Batman,” J.J. Abrams’ Black-led “Superman” from Ta-Nehisi Coates, Todd Phillips’ “Joker 2,” and Patty Jenkins doing “Wonder Woman 3.”

Last week, Jenkins turned in her treatment for “Wonder Woman 3” to the studio, according to the insiders.

Warner Bros. Film Group Co-Chairpersons and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy didn’t think the treatment worked and decided not to move forward with the film in its current iteration. Gunn and Safran, who had nothing to do with the decision, also agreed with De Luca and Abdy that the treatment didn’t work.

De Luca and Abdy spoke to Jenkins first and communicated that they didn’t get the treatment, didn’t think it was the right direction for the franchise and asked Jenkins if she would consider pitching something else for the IP in another direction.

According to one insider, Jenkins refused and let De Luca and Abdy “know that they were wrong, that they didn’t understand her, didn’t understand the character, didn’t understand character arcs and didn’t understand what Jenkins was trying to do.”

To underscore her point, according to the first insider, Jenkins sent an email to De Luca that ended with a link to the Wikipedia definition of “character arc.”

Jenkins was told that if she wanted to come back and pitch a different direction for Wonder Woman, the studio would hear it. She stood firm to her vision and responded that if they didn’t want to do her treatment, she wasn’t going to do a different one and would instead just move on to her next film.

Jenkins especially didn’t want to hear what newly installed DC Chiefs Gunn and Safran had to say, even though they had nothing to do with decision to not move forward with her version of “Wonder Woman 3.”

“She just doesn’t want to allow them to have a seat at the table to have an opinion on something new that she might come up with,” the insider added.

Representatives for Jenkins did not respond to requests for comment from TheWrap. Warner Bros declined to comment for this story.

The studio hasn’t killed the “Wonder Woman” franchise altogether and Gal Gadot is still attached to the role at this point. The studio has yet to discuss with Gadot how she feels about continuing as the Amazonian warrior without Jenkins, and hopes she wishes to stay on.

On Tuesday, Gadot tweeted “A few years ago it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman.I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU.The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you”

Gunn on Thursday shared on social media that he is still not ready to reveal more details about DC’s future that “we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is prepping the releases of four movies for 2023 from the previous regime: “Shazam: Fury of the Gods,” “The Flash,” “Blue Beetle” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”
    Maybe she'll do another Monster.
