Martial arts series “Kiddie Kai” to launch on Discovery+

A new karate-themed unscripted series is coming to Discovery+ next month, dropping a few days before season five of Cobra Kai starts streaming on Netflix.

Produced by New York–based Hot Snakes Media, Kiddie Kai (6 x 60 min.) follows kids and their families through a season of training and competition in the “Blackbelt Byway,” a martial arts hot spot in the Southeast U.S. The series also explores the larger role martial arts plays in the kids’ lives, from connecting them to a community to gaining confidence and learning discipline.

Also featured in the series are world champion and Black Belt Hall of Fame member John Chung, Shihan Cliff Kinchen, Sensei Jeff McGregor, and Sifu Mark Williams (“Shihan,” “Sensei” and “Sifu” are honorific titles indicating mastery).

The first three eps will launch simultaneously on Discovery+ on September 6, three days prior to the Netflix premiere of season five of Cobra Kai, the popular spin-off of the original Karate Kid films of the 1980s and ’90s.

The Kiddie Kai announcement follows a week of news about deep cuts at WBD streamer HBO Max, which heavily impacted animation and kids and family content. WBD has also recently revealed that it is stepping away from kids live-action programming as it resets its agenda ahead of merging Discovery+ with HBO Max into a single streaming entity in 2023.
