The International Wushu Federation (IWUF) unveiled on Wednesday the logo and theme of the 16th World Wushu Championships to be held from November 16-22, 2023 in Texas, the US.

The World Wushu Championships (WWC) hosted by the IWUF includes the men's and women's Taolu and Sanda events.

The biennial world event was first held in Beijing, China in 1991.

Wu Tinggui, director of the 16th WWC organizing committee, explained the logo which has a modern figure of a Wushu player in the shape of a ribbon on the top and a decorative outline of the Texas longhorn on the lower part.

The theme of the 16th WWC is "Solidarity, Peace, Friendship."

"We are thrilled to welcome the worlds back to the United States after nearly 30 years since the United States held the 3rd WWC in 1995," said Wu, also vice president of the IWUF, during the one-year countdown ceremony of the 16th WWC on Wednesday.

"We are glad to see Wushu as a global sport has grown tremendously around the world," he added.

"Overcoming many challenges during the COVID-19 crisis, both the IWUF and the Wushu community worldwide remained busy helping Wushu grow," Zhang Qiuping, secretary general of the IWUF, said in a statement.

"We have secured Wushu sport's entry as an official event in the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar 2026, and we have built up a powerful online teaching platform to help Wushu reach even more people worldwide," Zhang said.

"It is my great pleasure to invite the 158 IWUF member federations and their athletes to the worlds in 2023," he added.

Justin Benedik, member of the IWUF Athletes Committee and bronze medalist of the 14th worlds representing the US, expressed his expectation as the hosts.

"We are eager to welcome our international Wushu family."

"We know that Wushu will dazzle Texas spectators, and that all competitors will share a very special experience participating in this elite competition," Benedik said.
