Zhengzhou to hold a martial arts festival at Shaolin

The tenth International Shaolin Martial Arts Festival will be held in Zhengzhou, Henan province, from Oct. 18-22, reports state-run China News Services.

The city's vice mayor Liu Dong announced the festival on Thursday and said the five-day event will include an opening ceremony, martial arts competition, ranking contests, exchanges, presentations and a closing ceremony. Nearly 2,000 martial arts practitioners from 57 countries and regions had applied to attend the festival as of Oct. 9.

Liu said the city will serve as a martial arts exchange platform for practitioners throughout the festival. The opening ceremony, which is to be held in Dengfeng, where Shaolin Temple is located, will include four martial arts performances which will be one of the major highlights of the event.

Participating practitioners will be able see some of the best Shaolin Kung Fu as well as martial arts performed with 18 types of weapons such as knives, spears, swords, staff and whips.

Officials from the International Wushu Federation, the Chinese Wushu Association, foreign ambassadors to China and around a hundred experts and scholars will attend the event.
