I think the big issue is that there really aren't well-trained,well-educated instructors.
Too many guys who were stationed overseas, took some Martial Arts, got a beginner's rank (shodan) and self-promoted. Now, you have people with beginner's understanding, as the authority.

One of those International Federation of Sokeship Yadda-Yadda Federations.

99.9% were self-appointed Grandmasters of their own made-up systems.
You really need to see the names of these styles-many with mixed languages and dialects. Jeez, if you are going to make up a system (with a cool sounding Asian name) at least do some research into the language.
I especially like it when they take their last name or a word from their new-found religious affiliation, and add, "Ryu," to it.
Needless to say, I declined.
I am pretty choosey about whom I am affiliated with.

Education is not the issue. A lot of these masters cannot fight..and they are teaching self defense. They dis not spar. They did not go through the gauntlet and get forged into sharp strong sword. Instead they were a hunk of rusty metal abd just got a paint job to look better.
This guy here is the reason why traditional arts got a bad name...don't ask me why....he just is.
