To all the native Cantonese speakers. Do you pronounce the Y in Yip or do you say Ip?
I ask because I lost some of my Cantonese when I lived in Detroit. Now that I'm teaching in NYC I want get my tones and accent back.

no you don't.
The character is generally pronounced with a "Y"... but sounds more like "Yeep" instead of "YiP".
BTW... Merry Christmas, and have a great new year.
The more you know, the more you find you don't know...
And the "Man" is pronounced more like "Mun".
Going on from what both ntc and CLFNole have said, I have some friends from HK who pronounce it, and write it as 'Yip Mun'.
I pronounce and write the Y as well. Though I understand that Ip Chun (I believe) requests that it be spelled 'Ip'. Maybe that doesn't effect pronunciation.
I can't comment on the pronunciation - but IM's travel ID showed Ip Man... a photo of the ID was
shown on the net before and he and his family preferred the IM- not the YM.

"Ip man" was probably due to lack of standard romanization in those days.
And yes, it is pronounced as, "Yeep Mun".
Now that that's settled.
