Right, I see people drift out of class who didn't practice their basics much because they didn't like to do them ... those folks in general don't last more than a few months.
Then there are people who are really good, really talented, who practice a lot, but as soon as they achieve a small measure of success they leave their system and go looking for something else.
Then there's folks like me who are so-so at basics, forms, fighting, etc.
I've been guilty of "what if" syndrome many times in class. Sometimes that's OK with the instructors and they encourage us to think about the application; sometimes they just want us to shut up and do the move. There's a happy medium in there somewhere.
There is a great streak of violence in every human being. If it is not channeled and understood, it will break out in war or in madness. ~Sam Peckinpah
My old kickboxing instructor used to teach us self defense apps of kung fu techniques. Obviously he would want us to learn the tech, but he also said he wanted us to go way and think "what if?" so we didn;t start thinking that tech wa the be all and end all of self defense...
NorthernMantis, what's your solution to this. One of my biggest rants, speaking for cma in general, is the fact that I see some people looking at eastern ma philosophies in a western mindset rather than an eastern mindset, though through no fault of their own, afterall we were never born in that part of the world.

Well... not much that I can do actually since people are modernizing and "evolving"- but they seem to misunderstand that those have different beginings. What I would do for starters is teach people properly. It's true that there are a lot of sifus that will hold back but what can you do.
To tell the truth it's a cycle that has happened for centuries and all sorts of martial arts have fluctuated throughout the centuries. tHe best thing is to jsut let things take it's course. I know there are schools out there that teach the real deal. It's not that I'm selfish or anything but I'm not gonna waste my time to prove to the world what true martial arts are.
