Yeah, I think you're right. They are almost two different kicks. But that kinda makes sense. Even putting aside the question of appropriate training equipment for a moment, the choice of target is going to affect the angle of your knee at the time of impact, your range when you throw it, your position in relation to the other guy, etc.

I've really only used hook kicks to the head and heels (or occassionally hand) of an opponent. I like your idea though.
