there are 4 features or elements

1. scenes or landscape of mountain (rocks, stones)

2. scenes or landscape of water (lake, pond)

3. human architecture usually bridges, and pavillions,

4. greenery, plants, trees, flowers and grass etc.

finally, there is also the idea of borrowed view.

for example, we may see the northern tower temple from zuo zhen yuan.

we may see the san gabriel mountain from Chinese Garden at The Huntington.
