Ba Duan Jin Qigong and Shaolin Steel Jacket Workshop
Authentic Shaolin Qigong Workshop in Berkeley Shaolin Basic Exercises, Ba Duan Jin Qigong and Body Brushing In traditional Shaolin kungfu there are two famous forms of qigong – the Yi Jin Jing (“Muscle-Tendon Changing Classic”) and the Xi Sui Jing (“Bone Marrow Washing Classic”). Shaolin martial artists often learn Yi Jin Jing first to increase energy and stamina, and to prepare the body for harder physical training. For this reason, Yi Jin Jing is a very long form with difficult movements. Ba Duan Jin (“The Eight Treasures” or “Eight Pieces of Silk Brocade”) was created by Shaolin monks to simplify the movements of Yi Jin Jing, making them easier to learn, while maintaining their power and benefits. Each of the eight movements has a different meaning and affects the different internal organs, such as the kidneys, liver, lung, heart, etc. In the West, external exercise and internal exercise are often separated into two forms of practice. However, in China, especially in Shaolin kungfu, both internal exercise (qigong) and physical exercise (martial arts) are practiced together. This workshop will give students the key to understanding Shaolin martial arts, which uses qigong as a foundation for kungfu training and optimum health. The class will cover warm-ups, stretching, and basic stances, as well as the Ba Duan Jin qigong form. Using both external and internal practices, students can change their bodies from the outside (the muscles and tendons) to the inside (the internal organs). Along with the basic exercises and qigong, Shifu Yan Lei will also present a special practice which uses a bamboo brush to condition the skin. By hitting oneself along the body’s energy channels, the qi begins to flow properly, increasing the health of the skin and internal organs. This is a great way to improve circulation, detoxify the skin and clean the body. As students build up energy and use more power to hit the body, the vibrations of the brush go to the deepest internal levels, eventually cleansing the bone marrow. Body brushing is one of the best ways to keep the body young, healthy and vibrant! Shifu Yan Lei is a 34th generation Shaolin Warrior Disciple. From the age of fourteen, he lived and trained at the famous Shaolin temple in Henan Province, China. Along with his martial studies, he also spent considerable time studying the ancient Shaolin texts on qigong and travelled all over China to learn from different masters. At the age of twenty-eight, he moved to the U.K. to teach kungfu and qigong at Shaolin Temple U.K., the top martial arts school in Europe. He specializes in Sanshou fighting, medical qigong, and Shaolin “Steel Jacket” – a form of hard qigong, also known as Iron Body. In the U.K., scientists were so intrigued by his skills that Shifu Yan Lei was the first person to take part in a national study on the power of qi.
