some kind of safe guard should have been in place

such as a head gear or protector chest, so that any "weapons" that are wielding or flying would not seriously hit us and kill us.

it is indeed a sad situation.

safety has to be on our mind at all times.

I almost got knocked out during a 3-person waxwood staff set during a show one time. We were under a very low tent and when I raised my staff to block, it got caught on the top of the tent and I took a straight shot to the top of my head. Everything went white for a second, but I recovered and finished the set. I had a big lump and it broke the skin, though.

Well, I think this settles the age-old debate - Wushu is the world's most deadly martial art.

I'm sure anyone that's worked weapons has hit themselves

And I'm also sure that anyone who has worked a two-person form has delivered and and received injuries too. High-level wushu, even with its ultralight weapons, can be dangerous for sure. The whole point of sparring sets is to come as close as possible, so any slight error can be disastrous. Our copy editor, Lori White, once came with in an inch of losing her eye while practicing a spear vs. 3-section sparring set. However I must disagree with SPJ - safety gear for sparring sets is absurd. If you wear safety gear, you might as well just spar with padded weapons. Now, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I think every one who practices weapons seriously should dabble in padded weapons. But it's a totally different beast than weapon sparring forms.

It sounds like a freak accident. I can't remember hearing of anything quite like this before. I'm monitoring the news for more info, but not anticipating much. Even with the net, Sri Lanka news isn't the most accessible.

Martial arts expert shoots dead son, 10, before killing himself

Taekwondo teacher Miguel Angel Diaz, who had recently separated from his partner, was found dead in his gym along with son Juan Martin

Tragedy: Miguel Angel Diaz and his son Juan Martin

A martial arts instructor hanged himself after shooting dead his 10-year-old son.

Taekwondo specialist Miguel Angel Diaz was found dead alongside his son Juan Martin in the gym at their home by the boy's mum Elizabeth Lindt.

Ms Lindt, 30, had left 37-year-old Diaz in April after a series of rows.

She went to his house in the Argentinian town of Concordia after becoming concerned when Diaz, who was looking after their son for the day, failed to answer the phone.

After knocking at the door and getting no answer, she enlisted the help of a neighbour to force it open.

Neighbour Lisardo Castellanos said on local TV: "She was quite distressed and said she feared something dreadful had happened.

"So I helped her open the door and when we went inside it was like a scene from a horror film."

Inside the gym they found Diaz had hanged himself. He also had a gunshot wound to the head, and a suicide note stuck to his shirt.

Little Juan's body was found on the floor. He had been shot twice in the head and once in the back.

A police spokesman said they were treating the tragedy as a homicide and a suicide.

Diaz had been well-known in the community for running the local gym, where he provided self-defence training to security guards and policemen, including firearms training.

Officials are investigating the death of a Mississippi-based Marine following command-sponsored martial arts training in November.
Lance Cpl. Patrick A Woehle, 19, had been attending weather school at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi as part of his entry-level military training, said Lt. Matthew Rojo, a spokesman for Marine Corps Training Command. On Nov. 13, Woehle became unresponsive during Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Training. He was taken to Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport, where he died Nov. 14, Rojo said.
Woehle's cause of death has yet to be determined, Rojo said. Naval Criminal Investigative Service and military command officials are investigating the death, he said, but no legal actions are currently pending.
Woehle was from Vader, Washington, and a graduate of nearby Castle Rock High School. He had received attention as a high school track and cross-country athlete. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Oct. 20, 2014.
"The loss of Lance Cpl. Woehle is tragic," Maj. Cody Stewart, the commanding officer of Keesler's Marine Detachment, said in a statement. "We remain committed to Patrick, his family, and those in uniform who served with him. We will do all we can to keep faith with them during this difficult and trying time."
Woehle is the second Marine to die this year following physical training. Cpl. Alexis Aaron Alcaraz, 22, died in August after succumbing to heat stroke during a conditioning hike aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Steel whip! The only weapon I ever injured myself with more than twice, I usually learn the first time. The move at 1:18 I missed the catch & around the neck & right into the mouth, teeth, ouch!
