Qigong performance by more than 100 workers launches Construction Safety Week

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - More than 100 construction workers today (May 27) took part in a qigong competition at Golden Bauhinia Square. The event marked the launch of Construction Safety Week 2015.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said, "To ensure construction safety, we shouldnot only focus on prevention of injuries and occupational diseases, but also the inner world of workers. We hope to draw their attention to their daily habits and help them build up a healthy lifestyle for enhancing health conditions, leading them to appreciate the importance of taking care of their work as well as their bodies."

Also officiating at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Lee Shing-see, said, "Following a consultation with the industry, the Council and the Development Bureau developed a tailor-made smartphone application, 'Construction Safety App'.

Through this one-stop platform, we hope to provide industry practitioners with all kinds of safety information."

To encourage the industry to adopt qigong as a morning exercise on construction sites, a qigong competition was organised to mark the start of Construction Safety Week 2015. In today's final, eight teams comprising more than 100 construction workers demonstrated their qigong abilities at Golden Bauhinia Square. Qigong masters from the General Administration of Sport of China were invited to be the judges.

Jointly organised by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, Construction Safety Week was launched in 2012 to promote a zero-accident site environment.

The campaign has received support from various professional groups, organisations, trade associations and labour unions.

Other activities of Construction Safety Week 2015 include a safety conference, visits to construction sites with exemplary safety performance and the Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony. For more information, please visit the campaign website (www.safetyweek.hk).

    Qigong Mass Demonstration

Over 1,000 Singaporeans Gather for Mass Qigong Session on Waterway Day

SINGAPORE – More than 1,000 Singaporeans on Sunday gathered for a mass qigong session in the island’s northeastern suburb of Punggol to recognize the national Waterway Day on the anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who had championed sustainable water management for the island.

“Thanks to Mr. Lee’s vision and foresight, and the hard work of many public officers and engineers, we have four National Taps today,” Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said at a speech at the event in Punggol, referring to the four main sources of water for Singapore’s 5.39-million population, local news site Today Online reported.

The Singapore government has developed a water management system that collects rainwater in reservoirs, desalinates sea water, recycles existing water and imports the remaining water needed from neighboring Malaysia, according to Hean.

The Waterway Day event, called “Water, A Celebration of Life,” saw participants engage in mass qigong, cycling and speed walking along Punggol’s East Coast parkway.

The conservation activities come just two days ahead of the internationally recognized World Water Day on Tuesday, for which initiatives by 400 community organizations are set to launch, including a carnival run at Bedok Reservoir, a canoe festival in Punggol and a kayak and river cleanup on a 200-meter stretch of Singapore’s longest river, the Kallang River.
Maybe there will be more someday...

500,000 people perform "Kungfu Yoga" in east China city

HEFEI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Over 500,000 people braved chilly winds to practice Wuqinxi, an ancient Chinese physical exercise mimicking the movements of five animals, on Wednesday in the city of Bozhou, east China's Anhui Province.

Participants from schools, communities and government organs gathered at the square of the city's stadium and practiced Wuqinxi for 20 minutes.

Students from more than 1,000 schools in the city staged a show practicing the exercise.

Wuqinxi, literally meaning Five-Animal Exercises, is a set of physical exercise accompanied by Qigong (breathing exercises). Practiced in China for 1,800 years, it is proved to improve a person's immune system and helps prevent illness.

As a Chinese legend goes, Wuqinxi was invented by Hua Tuo (145-208), one of the greatest doctors in Chinese history, based on his observations of tigers, deer, bears, apes, and birds in Bozhou, where he was born.

"The bear movements are good for the stomach and spleen. The tiger soothes pain in the waist and back. The deer movements can reduce fat around the waist, and the ape is good for cardiopulmonary functions. Bird movements can help prevent arthritis," explained Hua Yi, the 59th inheritor of Wuqinxi.

The practice of Wuqinxi was inscribed into China's list of national intangible cultural heritage in 2011. Since then, 5,600 instructors have helped train 1 million people to learn the exercise in the city.

Hua said Wuqinxi is "not only good for the body but also fun to watch." Inheritors have performed the health-promoting exercise in shows around the world. Martial arts enthusiasts from more than 10 countries came to Bozhou to learn Wuqinxi.
