If you get shut out of THE FORCE AWAKENS....

...and just happen to live in the right 'hood...

Movie Review: ‘Mojin: The Lost Legend’ Is A Visually Spectacular, Gripping Thrill Ride
    Bradley Smith December 14, 2015

Mojin: The Lost Legend is a visually spectacular, gripping thrill ride. In the vein of Indian Jones or Lara Croft, the Mojin are a trio of expert tomb raiders trying to survive and thrive as they face all sorts of obstacles, both earthly and otherworldly. After momentarily retiring, through a series of chance and clandestine encounters, the trio are brought back into the game and recruited to find the “Equinox Flower” buried in a huge underground tomb which requires them to navigate various tunnels, mazes, zombies, explosions, and each other. From New York to China to the inner corners of the human mind, this surreal lost legend is worthy of being found.

When the film opens, we are introduced to the trio as they are entering a tomb. We learn about their methods and rules; like how they light a candle as they enter and return everything if it goes out. Thanks to a few booby traps, we get to see their defensive skills that make them seem almost superhuman; not too dissimilar from martial arts in films like Kung Fu Killer or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. And we get a glimpse into the surrealism that this movie offers when they actually open the deceased’s place of rest.

The film then cuts to New York in the late 1980’s and briefly takes on a period-piece feel as two of the trio are shown in an alley trying to hawk various “treasures”. With a shot of the Twin Towers, a giant 80’s portable phone, and even the brownish hue that you might see in 80’s movies, you’ll swear this film was made in the 80’s… or you’ll get a chuckle at the gimmick. Other “gimmicks” employed here include flashbacks as the characters deal with the memory of their past and motions that seemed designed for 3D (they come at the screen). That’s not to say these “gimmicks” are unwelcome, the 80’s feel is fitting for our recent nostalgic trend, and the graphics and special effects in general would suit a 3D viewing for this film.

Opens Friday, December 18. Click here to see where it’s playing.

    First forum review!

It was so not awesome, PalmStriker, that it was painful.

The latest from Wuershan, a director I've reviewed favorable here in the past. I loved The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman & Painted Skin 2: The Resurrection. His sense of humor, his sumptuous visuals, and his quick turns in tone made those two films exactly the reason why I'm fascinated by Chinese film.

What's more, it starred two fav actresses: Shu Qi and Angelababy.

It's dumb. I fell asleep several times trying to get through its 2 hours of special effects and absurdity. They say '****' a lot - at least that's how the subtitles go. So disappointing.

I don't quite understand why China is so fascinated by Tomb Raiders. I'm now wondering if Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) was ever shown in PRC theatrically. Tomb Raider (2001) maybe. There's a bit of a winning-the-lottery thing with China - some farmers that have dug up relics and then turned them over to the government are celebrated as heroes and get taken care of for the rest of their lives. The farmers that found the Terracotta Warriors in Xian now serve as tourist attractions. They are posted at the site for photos and get a government stipend for that. They're old now (heck they might be dead, it was 99 when I was in Xian). They just sat in a pleasant little booth and came out when people asked to take photos with them.

I watched it only because of Shu Qi.

    I hope she appreciates it

    Mojin X

Mojin X is the sequel to Mojin: The Lost Legend and another Chinese tomb-raiding flick.

Celina Jade, the breakout actress from “Wolf Warriors II,” is set as the star of Chinese big-budget tomb-raiding action film “Mojin X.” The film is a sequel to 2015 hit “Mojin: The Lost Legend.”

Directed by Li Yifan, “Mojin X” also stars Zhang Hanyu (“Assembly”) and Jiang Wu. Working through Saints Entertainment, the producer is Zhang Wang (also known as Er Yong). His other credits include the recent “Hidden Man” as well as award winners “The Postmodern Life of My Aunt,” “Peacock” and “In the Heat of the Sun.”

Jade, who has been singing and acting for over a decade, has enjoyed a career surge since last year’s “Warriors II,” which earned $850 million to become the highest-grossing film of all time in China.

Jade was last year named as an Asian Talent to Watch by Variety and the International Film Festival Macao. She is currently riding high as the star of “Hello Mrs. Money,” a comedy that opened on top of the Chinese box office this weekend. In five days “Mrs Money” has grossed $63 million.

The tomb-raiding theme has proved a subset of the action-adventure genre that generates disparate box office results. The first “Mojin,” directed by Wuershan, earned $256 million in China. More recently, the Li Bingbing- and Kellan Lutz-starring “Guardians of the Tomb” earned $7.9 million.
Celina is riding high with Wolf Warrior 2 & Mrs. Money.
