Kung Fury, David Sandberg’s utterly ridiculous kung fu B-movie, is getting a sequel

The original film was crowdfunded for over $600,000

    BY ALEX YOUNGON MAY 30, 2016, 9:50AM

Last year, David Sandberg successfully crowdfunded his utterly ridiculous 1980s-inspired kung fu B-movie Kung Fury. Now, he’s apparently written a sequel.

The Swedish filmmaker posted a photo of the completed script to Instagram. “Today, Kung Fury turns 1… Today, the future is written… Stay tuned #happykungfuryday.”

Spanning 30 minutes, the original Kung Fury featured dinosaurs, vikings, an arcade game that transformed into a killing machine, and a cameo from David Hasselhoff. Sandberg himself played the film’s kung-fu protagonist, while The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone was cast as his arch nemesis, Adolf Hitler. After raising over $600,000 through a crowdfunding campaign, Sandberg premiered the film at Cannes. It was later posted to YouTube, where it amassed over 25 million views.

David Hasselhoff, who sang the theme to the original '80s homage cult short, will also appear in the action-comedy from David Sandberg and KatzSmith Productions.

The hotly anticipated feature-length follow-up to one of the biggest cult short film of recent years has lined up an Oscar-nominated star.

Michael Fassbender has been cast in David Sandberg's action-comedy Kung Fury, which Sandberg will also star in and produce under his Laser Unicorns banner, alongside Fassbender. David Hasselhoff, who appeared in the original Kung Fury and sang the theme song "True Survivor," will also join the cast.

Released in 2015, Kung Fury was a Kickstarter record-breaking success, was selected for the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes and has gained over 40 million views worldwide. The feature, which will be a sequel to the original short, is set to shoot this summer in Europe and the U.S. (Watch the original here.)

The action is set in 1985 Miami, which is kept safe under the watchful eye of Kung Fury, the greatest **** cop of all time. Kung Fury’s Thundercops are the ultimate police force assembled from across history to defeat the villainous Kung Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. After the tragic death of a Thundercop causes the group to disband, a mysterious villain emerges from the shadows to aid in the Fuhrer’s quest to attain the ultimate weapon. Kung Fury must travel through space and time itself to save his friends, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy and defeat evil once and for all.

David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith and Aaron Schmidt will produce under their KatzSmith Productions banner, following their enormous success with It, which grossed over $700 million worldwide to become the biggest-grossing horror film of all time. Philip Westgren of B-Reel Films and Conor McCaughan will also produce. Pelle Strandberg is executive producing on behalf of Laser Unicorns.

Bloom will handle international sales and introduce the film next week to buyers at the Berlin International Film Festival. Endeavor Content and CAA will handle North American sales.
Will this even work as a feature film? The short was amusing, but it'll be difficult to sustain that for an hour and a half.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has boarded David Sandberg action-comedy “Kung Fury.”

He will join the previously announced cast of Michael Fassbender and David Hasselhoff. David Sandberg will also star and produce the film under his Laser Unicorns production company. Sandberg is adapting the upcoming feature-length movie as a sequel to his short film, which paid homage to 1980s martial arts and police films. It was selected to screen at the 2015 Cannes Directors Fortnight, and eventually gained a cult following.

David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, and Aaron Schmidt will serve as producers under their KatzSmith Productions banner. The team previously worked together on the 2017 thriller “It.” Conor McCaughan and Philip Westgren of B-Reel Films will also produce. Pelle Strandberg of Laser Unicorns will be the executive producer.

The feature film will take place in 1985 in Miami after the death of a Thundercop causes the police force to disband.

Schwarzenegger has been the face of the “Terminator” franchise for years — the fifth installment was released in 2015. An untitled “Terminator” reboot is currently in pre-production. Schwarzenegger’s other upcoming projects include fantasy film “The Legend of Conan,” “Triplets” with Danny DeVito and Eddie Murphy, and “Viy 2: Journey to China” with Jackie Chan.

Bloom will present the movie to buyers at the Berlin Film Festival and will also oversee international sales.

    Schwarzenegger is represented by CAA.

    turbo-charging

FEBRUARY 28, 2018 2:05am PT by Alex Ritman
'Kung Fury': How 'It' Producers Plan to Turbo Charge the Cult Action-Comedy Short

David Sandberg as the titular hero in the original 'Kung Fury' short

The team at KatzSmith Productions explains what it has in store for the feature-length sequel to the hit inspired by the 1980s, now with added star power from Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It’s been almost three years since the feature-length follow-up to cult short Kung Fury was first announced by The Hollywood Reporter.

At the time, the news didn’t make much of a ripple. The world — including some 30 million viewers on YouTube — was yet to see all 31 gloriously cheesy minutes of Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg’s excessively over-the-top action-comedy. That would come just a week later, when the film had its world premiere in — of all places — the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar of Cannes 2015.

But the fact that KatzSmith Productions had started working with “unquestionably the greatest director of the '80s” was proof that what had started as a hilarious Kickstarter campaign to raise $200,000 for a bedroom VFX project was morphing into something far bigger.

That something is now taking shape, and appears to be far bigger than anyone would have predicted back in 2015.

During the Berlinale earlier this month, Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger were revealed as having joined the cast of the Kung Fury feature film alongside David Hasselhoff (who had a cameo in the original and sang the theme tune "True Survivor"). Bloom also officially launched international sales (Endeavor Content and CAA rep for North America), while it was announced that Fassbender would produce, alongside KatzSmith, Philip Westgren, Conor McCaughan and, for Sandberg's Laser Unicorns banner, Sandberg and Pelle Strandberg.

With the castings came a synopsis. The film — due to start shooting in September — would see Kung Fury, “the greatest **** cop of all time,” travel through space and time from 1985 Miami to save his elite police force the Thundercops, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy and stop Adolf Hitler, the Kung Fuhrer (last seen laughing maniacally atop a robotic eagle in the final scene of the original), from getting his hands on the “ultimate weapon."

Reported fears about the film’s reception after three years of quiet were unwarranted. The casting news began trending almost instantly (the Fassbender story went straight to the top of Reddit), and the project was one of the buzziest titles on offer at Berlin's European Film Market (one impressed buyer said the Kung Fury script read like it was “written by a 10-year-old boy, but a 10-year-old with a great sense of story structure”). And, with several roles yet to be filled, other big names began making inquiries.

“We’ve gotten lots of incoming calls and emails — which is a strange experience — and from a lot of known actors who want to be a part of this,” says Seth Grahame-Smith, co-founder of KatzSmith with David Katzenberg and speaking to THR in Berlin. “But what’s important is making people be a part of this — those who truly get what it is and why they should be in it, as opposed to: here’s a paycheck.”

In the time since they came on board, KatzSmith has grown from an exciting new banner with some bold ambitions (the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, being one), to the production company behind last year’s $700 million box-office smash It, now the most successful horror film in history.

While it’s clear the KatzSmith team are adept at taking an already much-loved cultural moment and putting some significant turbo power in its engines, they’re aware of the specific challenges that lie ahead with Kung Fury.

“It cannot just be a rehash of the moments you know,” says Katzenberg, who admits the film should attract those who have never seen the short while appeasing the tens of millions who have watched it online.

“It has to be new and it has to be fresh and it has to raise the bar on those expectations. And I know it’s something that David thinks about constantly — he’s always the first to remind us that we have a duty to the 18,000 people who shelled out money on Kickstarter to deliver the goods.”

It was actually due to the popularity of the original (which aired on Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network and later on Netflix) that a feature-length script penned in time for Cannes 2015 had to be shelved.

“None of us had a clue what sort of viral impact this short was going to make, so in the aftermath we basically had to put it away because it was just an extended version,” says Westgren. “We felt this had to play as a proper sequel.”

Not surprising, given the online following, studios have reportedly been kicking Kung Fury’s tires for some time. But the determination has been to keep the project in the independent arena and away from those who might wish to interfere with the original’s purposefully schlocky DNA (THR understands one studio stipulation be that someone else, other than Sandberg, play Kung Fury himself, an instant no-no).

“Why we’ve really resisted taking this off the table is that we’re not sure this movie is one that would survive the studio process,” says Grahame-Smith. “How do you give this script a note? ‘Well, this doesn’t make sense. This tone is a little bit wonky. Well yeah, it’s supposed to be, thank you!”

Even without the deep pockets of a studio, the budget for Kung Fury is going to be “significantly bigger” than the $600,000 that went into the short. And the action won’t be shot entirely with a green screen, which was a necessity for the original. (Although, in keeping with its retro aesthetic, more than half of the film will still use this technology).

“It will be very, very ambitious and will feel much bigger in terms of vision and scope than the short,” says Aaron Schmidt, who joined KatzSmith as senior vp last year. “It reads like a $300 million movie.”

As for the music, Hasselhoff, alongside his role in the film, is once again rumored to be involved, as is Swedish synth-wave artist Mitch Murder, who wrote much of the original’s soundtrack (including "True Survivor"). But, like the casting process, the producers claim they’ve been approached by big names from the pop world wanting to be a part of it all.

“The soundtrack is something that we’re very interested in building out,” says Schmidt. “I get excited thinking who will be on that. I get excited thinking about what sort of game component there will be for this movie; whether it be mobile or platform or a steam-type game.”

Kung Fury is clearly the sort of exciting IP that lends itself to numerous platforms (an arcade-style Streetfighter-type game entitled Kung Fury: Street Rage was already launched in May 2015). But at its heart sits the film, and the main goal for KatzSmith and Sandberg will be to expand the universe of the short — one that inspired countless fan art submissions, plus a successful clothing line, toys and more — without losing any of the intentionally ridiculous elements that made it so widely adored.

While the addition of a twice Oscar-nominated actor and one of the biggest action stars of all time was a clear indication of the filmmakers’ ambitions, any sign that they’ve given Kung Fury a Hollywood makeover will likely see the original fan base turn away. And it’s something the KatzSmith team — who reference the “passion” involved numerous times — is well aware of.

“We all came to this as fans of the Kickstarter trailer, and then meeting David and hearing his plans and being blown away by the short,” says Grahame-Smith.

“It’s endlessly fun to work with him and to watch him continue to build and create this world that came out of his head. We like to say that if the short reminded you of popping a tape in the VCR, the feature will remind you of going to the cinema in the '80s.”

    See the original short below.

I hope they get some real Kung Fu involved.

    Eiza González

Eiza González Joins Kung Fury Feature-Length Film

    KUNG FURYEIZA GONZALEZ MOVIE NEWS
BY KYLIE HEMMERT ON MAY 8, 2018

Eiza González, who starred in Edgar Wright’s Oscar-nominated Baby Driver, has joined David Sandberg’s action-comedy Kung Fury, a follow-up to Sandberg’s cult 2015 short. González will star alongside the previously-announced Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), and David Hasselhoff (Knight Rider), who starred in the original short. Sandberg, who played Kung Fury in his short and will star in the film, is producing under his Laser Unicorns’ banner alongside Fassbender.

González is a native of Mexico where she began her career in the titular role of the popular Mexican telenovela Lola. Her upcoming projects include Alita: Battle Angel and the Untitled Robert Zemeckis Project. Details on her role in Kung Fury have not yet been released.

In Kung Fury, it’s 1985, the best year ever. Miami is kept safe under the watchful eye of Kung Fury, the greatest **** cop of all time. Kung Fury must travel space and time itself to save his friends, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy, and defeat evil once and for all.

Kung Fury began as a Kickstarter project with a modest $200,000 goal which quickly took the internet by storm and raised over $630,000 for the film. The original short also included The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone as Adolph Hitler and a song, True Survivor, performed by Hasselhoff. The short film, which you can watch in full in the player below, has gained over 40 million views worldwide.

Bloom is handling foreign rights to the film and will be continuing sales in Cannes, following a successful market in Berlin securing distribution in CIS, Germany/Switzerland, Italy, Latin America, Philippines, Romania, Scandinavia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and Turkey. Endeavor Content and CAA are handling North American sales.

David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, and Aaron Schmidt will produce under their KatzSmith Productions banner, following their enormous success with IT, which grossed over $700 million worldwide, becoming the largest grossing horror film of all time as of last year. Philip Westgren of B-Reel Films and Conor McCaughan will also produce. Pelle Strandberg is executive producing on behalf of Laser Unicorns.

Kung Fury will begin shooting this summer.
I'm beginning to wonder if this will have a positive or negative effect on our industry.

I didn't expect Kung Fury 2 to be a topic at Cannes.

Cannes: 'Kung Fury 2' Lands Major Investor, Sets Production Start (Exclusive)

    'Kung Fury'

The feature-length follow-up to the cult 2015 short, set to star Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger, will go into production July 29.
Kung Fury 2 — set to star Michael Fassbender, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eiza Gonzalez, David Hasselhoff and the titular kung fu cop himself, David Sandberg — is a go!

The feature-length follow-up to the cult 2015 short Kung Fury — the cheesy and comically OTT homage to '80s martial arts and police action films that became a crowdfunded sensation, premiered in Cannes and amassed in excess of 40 million views on YouTube — has landed a major investor and an official production start date.

Creasun Entertainment USA, the recently launched L.A.-based financing and production arm of Minglu Ma’s Asian VFX powerhouse Creasun Media and run by Ma and George Acogny, has taken a majority stake in the film and come aboard as co-producer. Creasun joins Argent Pictures, the production and financing outfit run by Jill Ahrens, Ryan Ahrens and Ben Renzo, who is co-financing and co-producing the project.

The brainchild of Swedish filmmaker Sandberg, who returns as director and the time-traveling, Nazi-bashing hero, Kung Fury 2 is now set to go into production July 29 in Bulgaria and Germany, with Oscar-winning British VFX giant Double Negative producing the special effects together with Ma.

Co-written by Sandberg and Tyler Burton Smith, the action is set in 1985, the best year ever. Miami is kept safe under the watchful eye of Kung Fury, the greatest **** cop of all time. His Thundercops are the ultimate police force assembled from across history to defeat the villainous Kung Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. But after the tragic death of one of their members causes the group to disband, a mysterious villain emerges from the shadows to aid in the Fuhrer’s quest to attain the ultimate weapon. Kung Fury must travel through space and time to save his friends, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy and defeat evil once and for all.

"Kung Fury 2 is the very exciting vision of David Sandberg, and it contains all the elements of a magical and fun ride for all ages," said Acogny. "We are thrilled to be part of this great project and can’t wait to share it with the whole world, where it will no doubt create excitement across the globe!"

Ma and Acogny of Creasun Entertainment, Jill Ahrens and Ryan Ahrens, and Renzo of Argent Pictures, Sandberg and Pelle Strandberg of Laser Unicorns, David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, and Aaron Schmidt of KatzSmith Productions, Philip Westgren of B-Reel Films and Fassbender of DMC Film are producing. Argent Pictures partners Drew Brees, Tony Parker, Derrick Brooks and Michael Finley are executive producing. Conor McCaughan of DMC Film is co-producing.

Endeavor Content is handing international sales for Kung Fury 2, and co-repping with CAA Media Finance for North American rights.

Creason Entertainment is also co-financing Come Away, starring Angelina Jolie, Michael Caine and David Oyelowo and currently in postproduction, and financed and co-produced a miniseries remake of the original HG Wells story War of the Worlds.

    From governator to presidenator

‘Kung Fury’ First Look Introduces President Arnold Schwarzenegger
Posted on Friday, September 13th, 2019 by Chris Evangelista

In case you forgot, there’s a feature-length Kung Fury movie coming our way, inspired by the popular short movie of the same name. And if that wasn’t weird enough for you, just remember that Arnold Schwarzenegger is appearing in the movie. And if you need even more incentive, try this on for size: he’s playing the President of the United States. Schwarzenegger posted a Kung Fury first look on social media today, showing him kicking-back as the commander-in-chief.

    Arnold

    @Schwarzenegger
I met David more than 4 years ago, when he showed me his short “Kung Fury” & I laughed my ass off & told him if he ever made it a feature, I was in. Now we are having a great time together shooting the feature. His vision & persistence inspires me. I hope it inspires all of you.

It’s a strange world we live in. When Kung Fury first dropped online and went viral, I’m positive there was never a point where people thought: “One day, someone will turn that into a feature film that stars both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Fassbender.” But that is indeed what’s happening, and if you needed a reminder, look no further than the post above, in which Schwarzenegger is seen with director and original Kung Fury star David Sandberg (not to be confused with the David Sandberg who directed Shazam!). “We are having a great time together shooting the feature,” Arnold writes. “His vision & persistence inspires me. I hope it inspires all of you.”

Sandberg has been trying to turn Kung Fury into a feature since at least 2015, working with Seth Graham-Smith and David Katzenberg. Back then, Sandberg told EW:

“Well, we’ve been developing with them for about a year a feature script, and we have a first draft. It needs some fine-tuning obviously, but I feel it’s a very good collaboration. When we met them the first time, we didn’t know what to expect. Their office was plastered with Back to the Future posters, and all this stuff that was just awesome. We started throwing ideas around, and it felt really good from the get-go. We’ve been developing this simultaneously as I’ve been finishing up the short. So now I’m excited to see where this is gonna take us.”

As for what we can expect from the feature version of Kung Fury, Sandberg said the film is “going to be a clean slate. Very different, but it’s the same universe.” In other words, it’s not just going to be an expanded version of the short movie. This entire project is wild, and I’m curious to see how it all turns out. And while Arnold Schwarzenegger was a pretty lousy politician in real life, I’m positive he’d make a better president than the one we have right now.
    I'll be back...

    Sandberg speaks

'Kung Fury 2' Director on Landing Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Fassbender for Follow-Up Film

6:30 AM PST 11/6/2019 by Alex Ritman

"I wanted to retain that same DNA and spirit from the short," says David Sandberg.

More than four years after the Swedish writer-director released the original film, David Sandberg discusses expanding his beloved short and why he insisted on portraying the Fuhrer-fighting cop.
With Arnold Schwarzenegger as a cigar-chomping POTUS and Michael Fassbender as a gun-toting sidekick called Colt Magnum — plus a time-traveling Hitler (The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone), machine-gun wielding Vikings, a half-dino/ half-human law enforcer known as Triceracop and, well, David Hasselhoff — Kung Fury 2 looks like the most insanely fun action comedy since the original Kung Fury short released in 2015. More than four years after Swedish writer-director David Sandberg’s crowdfunded VFX-heavy '80s nostalgia fest bowed in Cannes(in the Directors’ Fortnight, no less), the feature-length follow- up is revving its Lamborghini engines, with shooting having recently wrapped in Bulgaria and Germany ahead of 12 months of postproduction.

Speaking to THR while editing the film in L.A., Sandberg, 33 — the bandana- wearing Fuhrer-fighting, kung fu cop Kung Fury himself — talks luring A-list talent into his ridiculous world, avoiding the meddlesome hands of studios and getting drunk with Arnold at what had to be the greatest wrap party ever.

How has the leap been from making a bedroom project to multimilliondollar feature?

The biggest difference was the amount of work that had to be done in a very short amount of time. The shoot for the short was spread out over a period of two years. If you read a script [for the movie], there’s so much stuff happening and so many set pieces, but we had to shoot everything in 40 days. I also had to focus on acting and directing. Sometimes I’d be blocking a scene and was so focused on that and then I’d be like, "Oh, right, I’m in that scene!"

The original has a certain clunky, VHS style to it. Given the much larger budget and bigger stars, how have you made sure that aesthetic was maintained in the movie?

We spent a lot of time in prep, making sure we retained that same vibe. It’s been hard to make this movie because it’s independent. But if we had gone down the studio route, my fear was that we’d lose control and it would have become something different.

So studios did come knocking on your door?

What sort of requests did they make? We had a bunch of meetings, but the big thing coming out of them was that it would have to be completely recast.

    A different Kung Fury?

Yeah. And it would have felt weird. When the news first came out that Michael Fassbender was in the movie, people thought he was playing Kung Fury. And they were kind of disappointed that we had recast it. So it was always my intention to keep that spirit alive and build on what we had rather than completely redo it from scratch.

    Courtesy of Endeavor Content

David Sandberg directing himself as Kung Fury and his crime-fighting half-man-half-dinosaur partner Triceracop.
How on earth did you get Fassbender involved?

He had seen the short film and really loved it. And once he learned that a movie was in development, he asked his agent if he could read the script. Then he wanted to meet me and discuss it, and I was so blown away. I was like, "What? He’s the best actor in the world … what’s happening?" I flew to New York, we had dinner and really hit it off. We talked about it for hours. And he really got the vibe of the movie.

Schwarzenegger seems a more obvious fit for Kung Fury, but he’s no less of a casting coup. How did that happen?

So Arnold is such a huge inspiration for me. When I made the short, I had quotes from Arnold, I read his biography, and I listened to his talks. That was just like a thing that kept me motivated. And then my manager mentioned that he’s friends with Arnold’s lawyer. I asked if there was any way to get him to see the short. And he’s like, "Yeah, he said he loves it." I was like, "What!?" He set up a lunch meeting when I was in L.A., and he told me he loved the short because of the overthe- top violence and comedy. So I wrote this part for him and he came on board. Which was just unbelievable.

You celebrated the wrap with him at an Oktoberfest party. He’s a big guy. Who got drunk first?

I think I was drunk after one beer. I’d been off them for so long [for the shoot], since April. But it was the perfect wrap party. There was a band playing and Arnold took us on stage and the whole tent was cheering him. It was incredible.

Did you ever have a moment on set when you thought, "I once had this insane idea about a time-traveling kung fu cop who fights Hitler, and now I’ve been given millions of dollars to make an actual movie about it?"

    Every day.

This really is a phenomena in filmmaking.
