    OCTOBER 27, 2016 | 03:20PM PT
Though his “Avengers” film begins production in February, Robert Downey Jr. is still focused on getting his next “Sherlock Holmes” movie off the ground.

Sources tell Variety that Warner Bros., Village Roadshow and Team Downey have selected a writers’ room that includes “Guardians of the Galaxy” scribe Nicole Perlman (who will run the room), “Baywatch” scribe Justin Malen, “Rogue One” writer Gary Whitta, “Tomb Raider” Geneva Robertson-Dworet and “Snowden” screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald to help shape the script and story for next installment.

The previous two films both brought in more than $500 million worldwide. The threequel has always been a priority for the studio but Downey’s schedule has been busy considering his commitment to playing Tony Stark (Iron Man) in the Marvel universe.

Downey is attached to star and Jude Law, who played Watson in the previous pics, is also expected to return. Guy Ritchie, who directed the first two films, is expected to return to direct.

Susan Downey, Dan Lin, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are attached to produce.

The writers room concept first commonly used in TV, has become a trend more studios are using for films, especially when it comes to shaping universes. Paramount set one up for “Transformers” and Universal is doing something similar with their classic monster universes.

This is a rare case in which a room is being set up for just one film. However one source said that in this case it makes sense to gather a good group, rather than have several writers rewrite or polish, which happens to films often in the development process.

Perlman is not only is penning Marvel’s first female superhero film “Captain Marvel” but is also on board to write the “Pokemon” movie “Detective Pikachu” for Legendary. Malen already has a history with the studio having recently written the comedy “*******s” for WB and also has “Office Christmas Party” which opens in December. Besides “Rogue One”, Whitta has a handful of pics in development including “The War Magician” with Benedict Cumberbatch. Fitzgerald is currently working on “Cascade” for Fox.

Dworet-Robertson has also written “Dungeons and Dragons” for Warner Bros. as well.

Perlman is repped by CAA and Management 360, Malen is repped by Verve and DMG Entertainment, Whitta is repped by UTA and Circle of Confusion, Dworet-Robertson is repped by WME and Management 360 an Fitzgerald is repped by WME.

    WB

Warner Bros. has just made it official that they’re releasing Sherlock Holmes 3 on Dec. 25, 2020.

Robert Downey Jr. has been talking about a threequel in the press and the project is bound to happen with Jude Law also returning. No word yet on whether Guy Ritchie is set to return as director.

Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato is credited as screenwriter with Joel Silver, Susan Downey and Lionel Wigram returning as producers. Village Roadshow is also returning as co-producer.

Interestingly enough, Sherlock Holmes 3 is scheduled to arrive days after the Dec. 18 opening of Avatar 2. The first Sherlock Holmes proved tough following in the wake of the first Avatar during the 2009 holiday season, opening also on Christmas and ultimately making $209M stateside to the James Cameron pic’s $749.7M (it’s original stateside gross). Through two titles the Sherlock Holmes franchise counts $1.07 billion at the WW box office.

Also opening on Dec. 25 that year is Illumination/Universal’s Sing 2 as well as an untitled Disney live action film on Dec. 23.
I'm in for sure if Richie is in.

Robert Downey Jr. is set to reprise his role as the iconic detective.

The release of Sherlock Holmes 3 is being pushed back a year from Dec. 25, 2020, to the year-end holidays in 2021, Warner Bros. announced Monday.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are set to reunite for the threequel, which now opens in theaters on Dec. 22, 2021.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures are partnering on the film, which is set to once again feature Downey as the iconic British detective, while Law will play his famous sidekick, Dr. Watson.

From a script by Chris Brancato, Sherlock Holmes 3 will hit theaters 10 years after the first sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, debuted in December 2011 on its way to earning $545.4 million at the worldwide box office.

Sherlock Holmes, which was released Dec. 25, 2009, earned $524 million globally. Guy Ritchie directed the first two films.

    Dexter Fletcher

‘Rocketman’s’ Dexter Fletcher to Direct ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ (EXCLUSIVE)

“Rocketman” filmmaker Dexter Fletcher has come on board to direct the latest “Sherlock Holmes” film, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to star.

Fletcher is taking over the franchise from Guy Ritchie, who helmed the previous two films: 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes” and its follow-up 2011’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” Both were highly successful, with the first grossing $524 million globally and the second bringing in $545.4 million worldwide.

Sources say Warner Bros. had always planned on making a third film. However, Downey’s busy schedule as Iron Man prevented any new filming for the series. The forthcoming entry of the mystery series is expected to hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2021.

Jude Law is also expected to return as Professor Watson. Chris Brancato is penning the script, while Susan Downey, Joel Silver, Dan Lin and Lionel Wigram are producing. The studio had originally announced that the film would open on Christmas Day of 2020 but pushed back the date last March.

The film will be a co-production between WB and Village Roadshow.

Fletcher, who took over filmmaking duties on “Bohemian Rhapsody” last-minute after Bryan Singer was fired during production, most recently directed the Elton John biopic “Rocketman.” He also directed “Rocketman” star Taron Edgerton in “Eddie the Eagle.”

Fletcher also scored a BAFTA nomination for his 2011 directorial debut “Wild Bill“ and directed the 2013 film adaptation of the Scottish stage musical “Sunshine on Leith.” He is repped by CAA.
I'm not sure that I've ever seen a film by Fletcher.

    $20.8 M tax credit

Maybe if Downey is in Cali, I can finally get him for the cover.

Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Tapped for $20 Million California Tax Credit

“Sherlock Holmes 3,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, has been selected by the California Film Commission to receive a conditional $20.8 million tax credit for shooting in California.

Other feature films announced Monday include a Warner Bros. remake of “Little Shop of Horrors” with a $9.6 million credit; Will Smith’s “King Richard” with a $7.5 million credit for Warner Bros.; Universal’s “Purge 5” with $6.4 million; Atlas Entertainment’s “Janis” with $2.5 million; “American Pie Presents: Girls Rule” with $1.1 million; and four other projects with a $2.5 million credit — “Cherry,” “Macbeth,” “Pandora” and “Untitled Atomic Monster Film.”

The commission said the 10 projects will generate an estimated $310 million in qualified spending (defined as below-the-line wages and payments to in-state vendors). The “Sherlock Holmes” project alone will generate an estimated $106.8 million in qualified expenditures — the second highest project spending to date for Program 2.0 behind the $118 million in qualified expenditures for “Captain Marvel.”

The 2009 “Sherlock Holmes” and 2014’s “Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows” each grossed more than $500 million worldwide for Warner Bros.

“California is once again competing for big-budget film projects because it’s becoming clear that chasing the highest tax credit doesn’t always provide the best value,” said California Film Commission Executive Director Colleen Bell. “In addition to our tax credit program, we have so many resources that other locales simply can’t match.”

The 10 projects will employ an estimated 1,561 crew, 469 cast and 31,550 background actors/stand-ins over a combined 453 filming days in California. Eight of the 10 projects will shoot outside the 30-mile Los Angels zone, with “Purge 5” set for 25 filming days planned in San Diego County. A total of 58 film projects applied for tax credits during the June 17 – 21 application period. To receive the credit, production must start within 180 days.

A year ago, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed an extension of California’s Film and Television Tax Credit program for five years beyond its 2020 expiration with $1.6 billion in credits up to 25% of production costs. The program was more than tripled in size in 2014 to $330 million annually to compete effectively with incentives in New York and Georgia. The program is overseen by the state’s film commission, which selects projects to qualify partly based on jobs created.

Feature films covered under the program have included Disney’s “Captain Marvel,” Paramount’s “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” and Warner Bros. “Space Jam 2,” starring LeBron James and Bugs Bunny. Earlier this year, Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” became the 16th television series to relocate to California and has been allocated $24.7 million in tax credits. Other relocated series include “Good Girls,” “You,” “Sneaky Pete,” “Legion,” “Ballers” and “Veep.”
