    Zilant

Emblem revealed for World Wushu Championships in Kazan
By Dan Palmer Tuesday, 12 September 2017

The logo for this year's World Wushu Championships in Russian city Kazan has been unveiled ©IWUF

Described as "elegant" by the International Wushu Federation, the emblem features a dragon.

This is relevant to Kazan as the city's symbol is Zilant - a dragon or flying snake.

Zilant features on the city's coat of arms, while the dragon is also an important symbol in China where wushu was invented.

The IWUF said the logo had therefore "symbolically referenced the connection between China and Kazan".

A dragon's ability to breathe fire is also said to be depicted in the emblem.

In addition, it references the "baoquanli" martial arts greeting which is commonly used in wushu.

The colours, red and green, are the same used in the flag of the Republic of Tatarstan, where Kazan is the capital city.

Competition at the World Championships will take place between September 26 and October 3 at the Universiade Village.

Bars, a snow leopard, has been unveiled as the event's mascot.

Wushu was one of three sports from a final shortlist of eight not to be recommended for inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

It missed out alongside bowling and squash.

Baseball/softball, climbing, karate, skateboarding and surfing were all accepted.

Shanghai in China is the only candidate for the 2019 World Championships
I had to look up Zilant. Here are some wikipedia images:

...but not from any North American sources. Hopefully some one else will cover this beyond us. I've yet to hear of any U.S. athletes to place.

Shahrbanou Mansourian and Maryam Hashemi, the Sanda competitors of Iran’s National Wushu Team, won in the quarter-final and semi-final at the 14th World Wushu Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Iran’s women Wushu team has performed very well at the event, with Mansourian thrashing Shannon Morton from the US in the first round with one-sided points and racking up a huge point difference to secure a place in the semifinal, Mehr News Agency reported.

Mansourian had already knocked out a rival in her debut fight and was to clash with a player from India late on Monday.

In the weight class minus 70 kg, Hashemi defeated the Dutch representative to emerge as the first Iranian to find her way to the finals.

Hashemi will line up against Wushu exponent of the Philippines on Tuesday. The Filipina has a world record of bagging medals in world events.

    The games concluded yesterday

Team USA won silver in the final event - women's duilian (Lucy Lee and Mia Tian). Only three teams competed. Malaysia won, Macau would have placed second but was penalized for a broken sword, so the USA was bumped up. That was the only medal for the US, and it placed us 13th overall. Lucy Lee also just missed the podium in nandao, placing fourth. I think that was the highest placement of any US athlete.
