I've never understood why some gung fu people would try to be all KONG FOOEY when they would fight or spar. I'm dead set against it. I came into gung fu knowing how to fight so i easily adopted what worked for me but kept within the confines of how our CLF executes, something that was always encouraged by my sifu.
yes, the reality is if you want to know how to use gung fu you should know how to fight first. once you get some good basics in fighting, it is pretty easy to include your favorite techniques into the arsenal you already have as a fighter. (and no, not all fighting has to be gauged on the sport level of fighting).

In sparring, when your opponent punches at your head, you dodge your head away from his punch. You may not be able to find those "head dodging" from the solo form training.
Learning the combat application first and then look at forms to find what you need is called "backward search - search from leaf back to the root" in artificial intelligence (AI).

But, yes you can. People who know how to fight can do this kind of training very easily during shadow boxing.
I've found that my students become much better fighters this way. Plus, they totally comprehend the techniques in the form on a higher level. To me it is the smartest way to teach new students.Learning the combat application first and then look at forms to find what you need is called "backward search - search from leaf back to the root" in artificial intelligence (AI).

honetly, that depends on your vision. so what won't you be able to find? That statement was not addressed to you. It's my personal experience. You will not always be able find what you need in forms. Forms are created for:
1. combat,
2. Gong training, and
3. performance.
The concept of "opponent" does not exist in 2 and 3.

You can't find the following in forms:
- dodge,
- build leg bridge,
- use leg to block kick,
- use punch to set up throw,
- use punch to set up lock,
- ...
I have learned more than 50 forms in my life. Sometime I have hard time to find what I'll need in my forms. A simple example is "to use hook punch to set up a hip throw".

i have to stand on my words. its all about your vision.Such as:
- dodge,
- build leg bridge,
- use leg to block kick,
- use punch to set up throw,
- use punch to set up lock,
- ...
That's easy. its called INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE. Everything is just a shell, a reflection, a thought, idea.....until something is actually EXPERIENCED.I have learned more than 50 forms in my life. Sometime I have hard time to find what I'll need in my forms. I don't understand why the form creators just didn't think the way that I do.
How many of those 50 forms have the same routine, same techniques, same combinations?

The redundency is one thing. In the 108 moves long Yang Taiji form, the ward off, pull back, press forward, push have been repeated 3 times.
Some forms were designed to train foundation and power development. The Gong Li Chuan has a double fists strike that you will never use it in combat.

ah, see, this is where my sifu taught me that anything you see done with two hands can be done with one. seeing those double fists strikes for the first time i saw applications of it, based on my clf knowledge.

IMO, if you train
- 1 hand punch, you will rotate your body and send your arm out. Your chest will face side way.
- 2 hands punch, you will make sure that both of your hands can reach to your opponnet. Your chest will face forward.
The training for 2 hands punch can not be applied to the training for 1 hand punch and vise verse. This double hands punch also exist in the Baji form. The purpose is not for training "combat" but to develop the "sinking power".

19) get close to throw.
20) everything's better with nacho cheese.
21) Always wear a cup when grappling someone who looks like this:
