oh many thanks indeed, you are a scholar, a gentleman and at least as much gourmet as gourmand...when we go, should we say that Sahp Fu sent us?
BTW, in return, I offer you Penninsula, on Rte 27A (Montauk Hwy / Main Street) in Bayshore - although it's not exactly echt Chinatown, it's still very good food and they did pass my personal authentication test: ho yao gai lan with real tong gai lan(Chinese "broccoli") and their guandong chow mein was as good (and crispy) as any I've had in C-town; they also have "real" ha gow, but it's like $6 a tin, which is just a mite offensive...in fact, it's not the cheapest place in general, but it's very nice in terms of the interior design, with several small ponds/waterfalls interspersed throughout the place (in fact, whoever did their fung seuih knows their stuff - the entrance alone is worth seeing as an object lesson: it opens onto the corner of the block, so lots of stuff can roll in off the street, so they use a figure-eight pool that you walk over via a small bridge to diffuse it); finally they were able to very efficiently modify a pair of chop sticks with a rubber band and paper so that my 2 1/2 y/o son could use them (he gets very aggitated if he's relegated to fork use, and will actually sit there and try to figure the darn things out, and just get frustrated, so that's huge) - Chinese MacGivers!
hey, from who do you think I learned how to call it? I mean, this was the same guy who used to refer to rain as "lohk seuih"...
oh, this was an ONGOING bone of contention I had with these guys for a while, because originally they did have dim sum for a while - nothing too fancy, just basic ha gow, siu mai and the like but they are 3 minutes from my parent's house, so c'mon!; anyway, they claimed that there just wasn't any interest in it from their Chinese customers (!?!?!); anyway, there bao are as good as you'll get, and they have a kickin' lunch special: $3.99 for white or fried rice (a lot) plus choice of 3 sides, and they usually have about 15 things to choose from, and they are all tasty, especially the crawdads (spicy!) - the year I worked in Hempstead schools, lunch there 2x a week was the bright spot in an otherwise turbid day; they also have a butcher block with the compulsory duck, chicken, ribs assortments
