Abstract

Ma Shi Tongbei Biangan is an instrument-based technique system based on the folk Biangan techniques of the northwest area of China, reintegrated with the guiding ideas and training methods of Tongbei martial arts. Wu Yin and Qi Shou are representative achievements. In recent years, the Biangan has become increasingly popular because of its convenient form and flexible technical characteristics; there are many practitioners in the community, and there are also phenomena such as the intersection of positive and negative. This paper discusses the modernization of the Mashi Tongbei Biangan in terms of its formation and technical characteristics. Briefly, it analyzes its technical aspects to provide some reference for the popularization and study of Biangans.

Preface

The stick is the most representative martial arts instrument in the northwest, and the whip is the most characteristic. This martial art, native to the northwest, is famous for its short and compact form and flexible and dynamic technical style. The whip pole skills in the Long Yu area have been passed down in various ways, with different performances, and are a widespread folk martial art content in the northwest. Until recently, the famous martial artist Ma Fengtu and his disciples' efforts to systematize and standardize.[[i]] The collation is that based on the Biangan techniques passed down from various schools of folklore, the Mashi Tongbei martial arts advocated the Tongbei force - opening and closing, throughput, undulation, twisting, and turning as the basis, the complicated Biangan techniques were condensed and compiled into several groups of orderly and purposeful practice routines, namely the Wu Yin, Qi Shou, and thirteen methods. It also introduces the progressive teaching advocated by Mashi Tongbei martial arts and the idea of left and proper combined training into the Biangan. It forms a standardized technical system using three advanced practice methods: fixed momentum, fixed-step, and live. The practice style of the Mashi Tongbei Biangan (later called "Tongbei Biangan") reflects Tongbei strength in every way, with an extensive range of movement and twisting, and the footwork also pursues lightness and flexibility, steepness and swiftness, releasing and showing one's qualities as much as possible, and releasing long strikes. Therefore, the eight words "dexterity and lightness, long and tricky cold draw" can best reflect its style characteristics.

With the widespread dissemination of Mashi Tongbei martial arts in recent years, the whip pole has become increasingly popular. Because of its short, compact, and unique charm, practitioners often love it after contact with it and feel that they hate it when they see it. Especially in the past five years, the new generation of Lingnan Mashi Tongbei propagation group based on Jian Gong Academy has emerged, playing a more prominent leading role in the propagation and scientific research of domestic short arms, long arms, traditional archery, and other competitive items [[ii]], and the essential practice of Mashi Tongbei martial arts, represented by Tongbei Shi Er Da Shou and Wu Yin Qi Shou, has also received more and more attention. There are many practitioners in the community. However, at the same time, many problems that are inevitably encountered in the social development of martial arts have emerged, and the phenomenon of mud and sand and fish eyes mixing with pearls is frequent. Therefore, it is necessary to sort out the contents of the Tong Bei Whip Pole Wu Yin Qi Shou to facilitate the formalized development of the promotion and dissemination of the program. This article discusses the recent growth and shaping of the Mashi Tongbei Biangan from the aspects of its formation and technical characteristics. It analyzes their technical attributes briefly to provide corresponding guidance and reference for the study of Biangans.

Formation of Mashi Tongbei's Biangan Formative Period

As mentioned earlier, the Biangan is one of the famous stick martial arts in northwest folk and is one of the symbolic instruments of the Mashi Tongbei martial arts system. After Song, the government's no-soldier policy gave rise to the prosperity of stick martial arts, and sword skills were gradually integrated into it, with sticks instead of swords becoming normalized, and stick martial arts became the primary expression of folk instrument martial arts [[iii]]. The Early Period of Dissemination

Mashi Tongbei Biangans were unique in the northwest Biangans with their clear style and standardization as soon as they were introduced. As Tongbei martial arts spread widely in the northwest, skills such as Wu Yin and Qi Shou also spread gradually and quickly became the dominant content of the northwest folk Biangans. The martial arts fever and pass after the reform and opening up, especially in the 1980s. In addition to the northwest region, the outstanding talents cultivated by the Tongbei system have entered the education system and the martial arts association system throughout the country one after another, prompting the Tongbei Biangans to be more widely spread.
